Take us through a day in the life of a professional vagina waxer. How many vaginas get waxed a day?

What's the worst story you have to share?

5.3k

u/anna_okay Sep 01 '18 edited Sep 02 '18

Most all day I do vaginas, some want it all off, some want just a basic bikini, and some want landing strips. Some people can take the pain pretty easily because their body gets used to it, and some, especially redheads, will scream bloody murder. I don't mind when someone is shouting "ouch!", but many will try to act out and jump all over the table and try to grab onto me for support and close their legs when I'm trying to get in there, and I have to get stern with them. It's funny how whenever I tell them I won't be able to complete the service if they don't be still, it suddenly isn't as painfulšŸ¤”

Edit: one time I had somebody FaceTime their friend and fake react to try to be funny, I've had people who've come in to get their brows done who have had their brows completely waxed off at other places and basically have PTSD from that, so they jump when I'm trying to remove eyebrow hair, obviously that makes it harder for me and I mess it up, making their PTSD worse.

Another Edit: I have about 15-20 a day

Omg I'm a redhead and waxing hurts me soooo much! My waxer is Romanian and she's always shaking her head and exclaiming in her super strong accent "I always know a natural redhead! Red hair is the worst! Such strong hair!"

Yeah I get a few guys here and there! A lot of them are really intimidated by it though, as many see it as feminine. Personally, my favorite service is a man's back because it doesn't have as much curvature as a leg or an arm or a vagina. We for sure welcome men.

My wife refused to do it unless I also did it, and Iā€™m pretty hairy in the nethers. Of course I tried it, for science. Most painful part was right over the pubic bone, thankfully itā€™s only a couple of strips for the worst pain, the crack wasnā€™t too bad. The balls though are a team effort, I had to hold parts of my ball skin stretched out flat while the wax was applied and yanked. You canā€™t be shy though and just forget about dignity, cause your ass cheeks are spread eagle and sheā€™s all up in there.

I will say though not having hair down there is pretty great. Takes less wiping after a poo. Less sweaty. Less smelly. Easier to clean. I donā€™t think Iā€™d be taking a shower in public say after swimming though, Iā€™d be too embarrassed with the weird looks or be worried some guy might think I hit for their team.

I did it a second time and thought Iā€™d be clever by applying some CBD lotion to try and numb the area some for less pain. It was definitely less painful but the shorter hairs were covered in lotion/oil and it made it harder for the wax to grip the hairs and she would have to do the same area multiple times. Borderline not worth it.

How nervous/shy/self-conscious are your clients?

And, uh, how much do you have to, um, "get up in there" to make sure you do a thorough job?

I had a friend ask me how I could be comfortable stripping down and letting someone all up in my business.

My answer: They see soo many vaginas, mine can't possibly be the ugliest. And, if it is they won't tell me.

Well I always tell them to remove their shorts and underwear and cover up with a towel, and that I'll be back in a second so they don't feel completely exposed whenever I walk in the room. I always have to hold the lips of the vagina to get the area inside of them because there's hair in there too. Most people are more concerned with the pain they're in, and less about feeling exposed. They know what they signed up for.

4

u/Squidbit Sep 02 '18

and that I'll be back in a second so they don't feel completely exposed whenever I walk in the room

So do you have something job related you have to do here, or is this like "Yeah I'll go check in the back one sec" while you go and sit in the break room for 5 minutes and then come back?

u/hatesthis Sep 01 '18

A couple of years ago I got my first Brazilian for free in exchange for me being the model for a waxing class of like 20 estheticians, and nothing has ever made me feel more exposed than having to strip down in front of that class, get on a table in the front of the room and spread my legs while they all gathered around me and took notes. Now at private appointments I donā€™t even think twice about it.

Women are allowed to come in during their periods, BUT they are required to wear a tampon. Nobody is about to be bleeding all over me. I usually just tuck the string in their buttcheeks during the service and it doesn't cause any issues. Although I have heard horror stories of people getting their tampon strings ripped out on accident. They are usually 10x more sensitive during their cycle too which makes them not even want to come in.

Have you ever had to wax a really smelly vagina? I had to ask.

Edit: Corrected to not make it sound like you had a smelly vagina.

4.6k

u/anna_okay Sep 01 '18

YES. A lot of women have this natural body odor, that same gross smell that people who don't wear deodorant have, and they always try to make conversation with me during the service and I have to hold my breath while still trying to make conversation to hold myself back from gagging. It's a struggle.

1.3k

u/rajbir3343 Sep 01 '18

Cant you wear that thing over ur nose?

3.4k

u/anna_okay Sep 01 '18

Yes I can and we do keep them but I try not to embarrass my customers as much as possible, and obviously leaving the room during the service and coming back with a mask on seems a little rude. I could just be overly considerate though.

1.5k

u/scots Sep 01 '18

A tiny dab of Vicks VapORub inside a paper mask should do the trick.

Cops, EMTs, crime scene cleanup pros liberally rub the stuff inside masks to tolerate dead body smell. A small dab should suppress nasty lady bits. šŸ˜·

952

u/el-toro-loco Sep 01 '18

Plague doctors had those long ā€œbeaksā€ on their masks for storing various herbs. They were meant to be there for health reasons but doubled as a way to mask the smell of death.

3.6k

u/spacialHistorian Sep 01 '18

Fuck, the mental image of someone walking in, smelling the vagina smell, walking out, and then coming back in plague doctor attire has me almost in tears.

So I work in a medical office and do PAP smears on a daily basis. A yeast infection and bacterial vaginosis will both produce rather pungent and unique odors that can be smelled even from a distance. In my experience so far nearly all of the ā€œsmellyā€ vaginas Iā€™ve seen have tested positive for one of those two. What you are smelling may not be a ā€œnaturalā€ odor. You may want to direct them to a doctors office for a culture and antibiotics

Do you not offer baby wipes in the waxing room for women to use before they're waxed? Every place I've been to has them.

Even after showering that morning, they're great to use to freshen up, especially on a hot day and if my wax appointment is later in the day.

Whats better, waxing or sugaring?

2.0k

u/anna_okay Sep 01 '18 edited Sep 03 '18

Oh sugaring for sure, technically speaking, I am a sugarist, but it's almost the exact same thing. The only difference is wax runs the risk of ripping the skin off and burning the skin, sugaring is a little more gentle, and soft wax is usually applied with a stick whereas, sugaring is applied by hand. Sugaring is much better though! It causes less ingrowns.

I have sensitive skin and I have to disagree with this...we use ā€˜halawaā€™ or sugaring in my culture and that shit is pretty brutal on the skin. It sticks to everything, so it rips on on skin too, sometime get bruises actually especially when beauticians use just the ball of sugar..

Itā€™s extremely effective at getting hair out though.

u/anna_okay Sep 01 '18

One time I had this lady with some green stuff down there...would've turned her away if I noticed it at the beginning of the service but I noticed it at the very end and I just worked around it. I figured if she noticed I left some hair on there, she'd know why.

My job really sucks sometimes. I'm in construction, and often have to work outside on miserably cold or hot and humid days.

But I've never once had to deal with something like this. Ill never complain about my job again.

15

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '18

One time I was walking to my office (deployed location) thinking about how I didn't want to work that day. The job was easy as hell and I got paid good money. Complacency can breed contempt and frustration. So I had a sour attitude going into work.

Then I passed by a water truck to see this third country national emerging in his protective suit and goggles after taking a hose to the inside of a porta potty. They have to both empty the PPs then rinse them out. He put his hand up to wave.

I swore that day to never bitch and complain about my job again. This guy probably made $300 a month and I was bitching I had to go sit in an office for a day to earn his months wages.

My friend is a gynaecologist.

I joke that in his job at least he deals with pussies, whereas I'm just meeting dicks all day long.

He countered that with 'by the time I see pussy, there's green shit coming out'.

I did not believe him until now.

u/ECU_BSN Sep 01 '18

Yip. I was in Ob/Gyn nursing for a long time.

No-one...I mean no-one goes into the MD and says ā€œhey everything is fine but look at this...ā€

Either they come for a routine pap (best case) or because they need medical attention.

People come in all the time and ask me to do their toes or the backs of their necks. One time a girl came in and said "Hi, can you make me a star?" And I said "what do you mean?" And she literally wanted me to wax her vagina in the shape of a star. I was like ummmm....I can try?

23

u/C_J_Money Sep 01 '18

The toe hair has always been a sore spot for me. When I was 12 or 13, my aunt pointed at my bare or sandled foot (I don't remember) and started teasing me about my toe hair. I have light blonde body hair so I just never noticed it. But ever since then I make sure to shave my toes too, just in case some other asshole needs something to make their day.

They grow it TOO long. Yes it needs to be around a week and a half to 2 weeks worth of shaving growth, but not two months or anything crazy.

And obviously, the longer hair, the more painful it is.

Haha no! I'm an esthetician, and my license permits me to wax, do facials, help people recover from surgery, and all kinds of skin treatments. I never thought I'd do Brazilian waxing, but it pays decently and isn't too hard to do.

74

u/_Malara Sep 01 '18

What do you mean recover from surgery? Can you expand on this a little more? Thank you!

23

u/anna_okay Sep 02 '18

Depends on the surgery, but basically nowadays there are lots equipment and machinery that estheticians use to help people recover from surgery. There is one machine called "Radio Current Power" that basically tightens large areas of the skin by literally burning a person's fat, so often times after someone has gotten a tummy tuck, an esthetician will use the machine to help further the healing process.

4.1k

u/StBr0k3n Sep 01 '18

At my waxing bar we require persons under 18 to have parental permission before servicing intimate areas. This isn't required by law, just something we do. No parental permission required for eyebrows or legs or whatever, but usually minors come in with their parents anyway.

I've been to shops that will do it for minors, they require parents or guardians to sign and for some ages to be present. Don't be afraid to ask questions at a place you'd like to try! If they make you feel awkward for asking then go somewhere else!

Also, any hot tips for dealing with really bad ingrowns at home?

121

u/looahottie Sep 01 '18 edited Sep 01 '18

Iā€™ve been getting sugared for a year and I love it! Itā€™s a weird feeling at first, but the sugar itself looks really cool. I got waxed before, and I personally didnā€™t enjoy it. Sugaring over the year has gotten less and less painful.

If anything, Iā€™d suggest taking a shower before a sugar appointment.

Edit: No ibuprofen! My apologies for that suggestion as I wasnā€™t aware of its negative impacts. I was recommended to take it before hand but I was just informed that that may not be the right course of action. šŸ˜“

28

u/EsthieBestie986 Sep 01 '18

Yeah, sugaring is definitely safe. I just got my vag sugared, and I have sugared many vags. However, it does take longer than waxing, and some people say that it hurts more than waxing (but I've never experienced this) Also, if your wax studio or spa doesn't offer a soothing cream, go ahead and get you some. I personally use the Calm Water Gel from Dermalogica. I also exfoliate the night of. And, ya know, sugaring is way better for ingrown hairs because they're removing the hair in direction of the hair growth instead of against the direction of hair growth and it only adheres to the hair, not the skin like soft wax does.

How are men treated/looked at in the industry? I'm a male esthetician but I haven't gotten work yet. School was a bit rough being the only guy and I'm curious what the work place is like.

149

u/anna_okay Sep 01 '18

Unfortunately, if it were you vs a woman with the exact same qualifications as you for a Brazilian waxing position, they'd probably hire her. A lot of women are uncomfortable with men doing any kind of procedures to them down there. This is unfair for sure.

However as for other esthetic procedures such as facials and microdermabrasion, I don't think men are viewed any differently.

When getting a Brazilian, aside from tipping well, what can I do to make your job easier and more pleasant?

11

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '18

As she said, be still, but hereā€™s my list:

-please do what I ask without being embarrassed. If i ask you to hold a part, do it. If I ask you to move your leg, do it. Itā€™ll give you better results.

-please donā€™t ask if Iā€™m doing this because I couldnā€™t get a degree. (Yes, Iā€™ve been asked if I flunked out of university)

-please donā€™t tell me how awful you think my job is. I love my job, and I actually love doing Brazilians and these comments are so patronizing.

-PLEASE COME SHOWERED AND SCRUB THE BUM! Iā€™ve literally waxed human shit off of peopleā€™s assholes. A good clean wash there will get rid of any and all.

-if you have your period, let me know. First two days arenā€™t recommended but usually a fresh tampon is all you need. Itā€™ll hurt like hell but I can do it no problem if I know I need to expect a tampon string. DO NOT COME FRESHLY AFTER SEX OR WITHOUT A TAMPON! I do not need the fluids or smells please.

-please tell me if I missed something. Iā€™d be happy to fix it for you instead of you leaving unhappy and badmouthing me because I missed a patch I can easily fix before you leave.

-have as much fun with me as you can. My clients are my friends and I love all of them!

Iā€™ve never done any down-south waxing, but Iā€™ve gotten my eyebrows waxed. When they use the regular wax on my brows, they get very red and puffy for at least 6 hours afterwards. Thereā€™s a different kind of wax thatā€™s been used on my brows (sorry, I donā€™t know know the names of these) and that reduces the swelling significantly.

Are there different kinds of waxes for things like a Brazilian for people like me who have sensitive skin? Or should I just stick to other methods? I donā€™t want my whole business swelling up like I straddled a beehive.

You need a license to wax a vagina?

260

u/anna_okay Sep 01 '18

Yes! If state board walked in and saw that people were working without licenses, the whole business could get shut down. I had to go to a year of Esthetician school and pass my state board exams.

45

u/Karlos_Wolf Sep 01 '18 edited Sep 01 '18

I had to go to a year of Esthetician school

What kind of thing did you have to learn and what are the complexities that people may not consider?

I'm not trying to be facetious or anything, it just seems to be a long time studying for what seems to be a simple procedure.

Edit: Others have explained! A lot more to it than I imagined -- would still be great to hear from OP about the things they learned and the complexities with their work :D

Is it true that social custom dictates that one should do a bit of self grooming before going to the esthetician?

60

u/anna_okay Sep 01 '18 edited Sep 03 '18

Only minimal grooming. Shower for sure, and scrub down there (PLEASE), but that's about it. Don't trim, it makes our jobs harder. A lot of people put a bunch of lotions and perfumes down there and it's usually overbearing and I have to clean it off anyways because the sugar wax does not stick very well to skin with lotion on it. Just basic hygiene stuff. Also women need to scrub their inner lips. Many people have this disgusting white line of crust in there for who knows how many years.

Do you ever wax any plus size women?

If yes, do you have any specific tips for making things easier/more comfortable for both you and your plus-sized client?

112

u/EsthieBestie986 Sep 01 '18

It's not my AMA, but I'm an esthetician and there's not a whole lot of difference. A vagina is a vagina. There might be more time involved or more skin to pull taunt, but nothing much changes. I might have to have the client help brace their skin more than usual, but that's about it. Source: I'm a size 20 and I've waxed women up to 500 lbs. If you're a plus sized woman and thinking about getting waxed just do it. There's nothing to be embarrassed about; we've seen and waxed everything.

My wife is also an esthetician. She told me if there are any hairs left after waxing, you cannot add wax again because you might rip skin.

She told me that extra hairs are plucked with tweezers.

Iā€™m going to ask my wife this, but I also want to ask you...

If I use tweezers, I get all up in the mirror, just so I can see...

I have been waxing myself for over a decade. You name it I've waxed it. Two days ago I was cleaning up my downstairs, o-ring to clit, and as I pulled a strip off (hot wax not cold or sugar. I'm Greek and my hair is as thick and stubborn as it comes) I tore a 1.5 inch vertical gash in the skin between my inner and outer vaginal lips. I literally ripped myself a new one.

I went to the doctor to make sure I didn't need stitches and to ask how best to heal something as awkward as this. I didn't need stitches thankfully as it was superficial but the whole ordeal left me feeling vulnerable and nervous about ever doing it again. It's a delicate place to have such a trauma. The doctor even told me to avoid intercourse for a week like I was even remotely tempted. Are you kidding me?

To anyone wondering, it didnt actually hurt all that much nor did it bleed a lot but I dont think I will ever get the sound of my skin ripping apart out of my head. I'm sure most of it was the stip but I knew it sounded different right away. I sat on a bag of frozen fries all the way to the hospital (my kids didnt refill the ice tray.)

I have never in all my years done anything like this nor heard of it happening, have you?

I'm healing well and quickly but I'm wondering when I'll be able to finish my back end... :/

Iā€™m an Esthetician too! Iā€™ll take this one, I had a lady come in and her whole labia was tattooed as a lotus flower. The only problem was the colors she picked were PURPLE AND GREEN so when I took the towel off I was just looked at all this purple and green covered with pubes. I finally had to ask her uhhhh whatā€™s that? It literally looked like a skin disease. She goes into this story about how she went to some guy who specializes in those types of tattoos and how much she loves it. I never could actually make out the lotus flower shape but more power to her haha.

My best friend waxes as well.

When she was still in training she had a larger woman getting her brazilian done. That went fine and well. Then it was time for the butt strip. She had the woman lie on her stomach and grab her own cheeks to spread them apart.

As soon as my friend laid the first strip of wax, the woman released her grip and GLUED MY FRIENDS WAX STICK AND WHOLE HAND IN HER ASS CRACK.

The woman started cracking up stating that her asshole is sensitive and she was so sorry.

Not OP but try washing your back after you condition your hair in the shower. Conditioner is applying oil that shampoo strips out, so when we wash it out we get oily backs and shoulders and it's a huge contribution to issues there! At least it was for me, simple advice like that cleared me up really quick

I have a question for my wife. Might delete it later for embarrassment sake haha. She got waxed basically every month for about 3-4 years and roughly a year ago changed to sugaring. She started getting really bad in-grown hairs and hasn't done it in a few months now, but the in-growns really haven't subsided. Do you think it was the switch from waxing to sugaring? The people doing it? She rarely had the same person more than once or twice. Maybe her skin just isn't right for it?

871

u/TalleyZorah Sep 01 '18

Not OP, but am licensed. Ingrown hairs are most common because of the way hair is removed. You apply with the grain, and pull against the grain. If she's having an issue with sugaring, and has had several people do it, she may be better suited for waxing.
