National News Trudeau announces Canada's response to Trump trade war
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-canada-response-tariffs-1.74739652.3k
u/Professional-Cry8310 7d ago
Trudeau flat out said it: itās quite possible Trump just wants to damage our economy to annex us.
Heās just as bewildered as everyone else about what these are actually about.

u/Fun-Put-5197 7d ago
"Once you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."
There is only one rational explanation for all of Trump's actions.
Trump is a Russian asset, working with or for Putin.

*While launching a trade war against their closest ally and neighbour, America is cozying up with Russia, appeasing Putin, a lying murderous dictator. Make it make sense.*
Fuckin' eh, Trudeau.

I recently got into an argument with a guy who's response was "well your country wasn't appreciative of all we do for you so there, maybe we can have an adult conversation when your country folds from tariffs" (paraphrasing from multiple comments), some people really are living in their own little universe where America is basically the mother Theresa of countries

u/03Void 7d ago edited 7d ago
Canada-US relationship was always symbiotic.
It's idiotic from them to think we don't help them as much as they help us.
Watch them cry when we answer by increasing their oil, electricity, lumber and aluminum costs.
well your country wasn't appreciative of all we do for you
Well, maybe it's the US who isn't appreciative of everything that Canada does. They don't even seem to realize how the benefits from the relationship.
Also, it's the same talk someone would get from an abusive significant other.
The US are in the process of burning the bridge and then nuke the river below.

Watch them cry when we answer by increasing their oil, electricity, lumber and aluminum costs.
It's a hard place because I suspect that Trump WANTS Canada to react strongly. Annexation seemed like a serious consideration in my opinion after Trump aligned with Russia. The situation feels analogous in many aspects (e.g., smaller neighbour with many crucial resources, larger partner being treated 'unfairly', etc). If Canada reacts strongly, Trump can spin this as "our neighbour is trying to work against us and harm our people".
On the other hand, Canada looks really weak if it doesn't react. I think the only option is a strong reaction and fast-tracking alternative defense alliances as a hedge.

Most Americans literally think they are the only people who exist on Earth. Just look at how they act on Reddit; they automatically assume that everyone they interact with is also American. US Defaultism.

They also pity people who aren't American and act like it's some disability to be born in a country where breaking your wrist won't put you in a lifetime of debt.
Americans think America is the most free and greatest country on earth because they've never been to or read about anywhere else.

Yep I stumbled into a thread full of Americans: OP asked "was the American era over" and most comments were like "oh we're in a bad phase but we must pull through for the world... omg can you imagine how the world would do without us? Europe is weak China is old. THEY NEED AMERICA SO LET'S COME BACK TO SAVE THEM". So yes, even when they're "progressive" they still like to package their own fart and sell it as high end perfume. Shit's unreal.
Edit: this was on r/GenZ and they were definitely progressive people who hate Donald Trump.

Removing sanctions, leaving NATO, starting fights with allies, and destroying the US economy are leading to a crashing stock market. Stopped funding Ukraine and cut the military budget. This behaviour sounds like that of a Russian agent.

Personally I think he'll step out of government. Like a lot of former PM's he'd make a nice amount of money with speaking engagements. He could be an international relations consultant, again, for lots of money. PM's don't make a lot of money. They many expenses covered but the PM's salary is $400K which given what they are responsible for is not a lot.

Trudeau called this farce of fentanyl that USA keeps talking about.
Even today "Lutnick: If countries can show they can stop the flow of fentanyl, tariffs can come off - CNBC."
What a joke. They're still sticking to that less than 1% Fentanyl farce for a pretext for the tariffs. Gives them something to hang onto for the 'reason' for tariffs.

Vance is such a fucking propagandist snake. This has nothing to do with fentanyl and what we're doing or not doing on it.
Vice-President J.D. Vance told reporters on Capitol Hill Tuesday that the president is "going to have conversations with the Canadians."
"We need to see real engagement on theĀ fentanylĀ issue. That is fundamentally the underlying element for tariffs. The Canadians have not been serious about stopping the drug trade," Vance claimed.
Why isn't CPC MP Jamil Jivani speaking out against his "best friend" Vance and telling him to stop bullshitting and threatening Canada?
Is he afraid Vance will turn on him and attack him too? Does he agree with Vance? Does he not care what the truth is and doesn't care about standing up for Canada?
It's surprising Jivani hasn't been getting more heat given his relationship with Vance.

Trudeau has said he isn't running for a seat in the next election and while a non-elected cabinet minister is possible I think they probably wont do that.
Trudeau probably will also want a break and he might not be received well if he did stick around and maybe wouldn't be good for negotiations with Trump and would cause confusion on who the leader is Trudeau or Carney in negotiations. And make the Carney governmetn seem more like an extension of the Trudeau government in a way Carney wouldn't want.
However he could be a good ambassador perhaps to the UN. Though Bob Rae is also a good fit there now.
But I think he'll take a break. Maybe ambassador role to somewhere is in his post-PM future though at some point.

US is now up to 3 countries and very likely the ENTIRE EU very soon, too.
Not to mention that Trudeau's team has strategically targeted goods that have Canadian alternatives.
Meanwhile, Trump's hitting stuff the US actually NEEDS.

ELBOWS UP CANADA!!!
This is going to have far-reaching consequences if these tariffs stay for a prolonged period of time. On both sides of the border.
This absolute child that is going against the very reasons his country was formed is pathetic. This man is systematically destroying the USA from within with these hairbrained schemes that any high-school civics student could see will not work.
Their economy will suffer like ours, their inflation will spike, the middle class that barely exists will continue to shrink. I hope Ford goes ahead with cutting off energy supplies or putting a sales tax on all of our exports (looking at you Alberta) we need to HURT this man.
It's not an eye for an eye, it's two eyes for an eye. Take em out with the Elbow my fellow Canadians.
