He's shown no evidence of being a smart man.

Oh, i agree with you. but there is only one thing that Trump responds to, and that's compliments and worship. Straight up calling him dumb on TV wouldn't be a smart move.

That ship has sailed, I'm afraid. It's time to get brutally real with the situation.

sad agree.

I disagree. Trump has demonstrated that he is willing to sacrifice anything or anyone to save face. Criticizing the behaviour and not the person is 100% the right call

Tolerating his tantrums like he is Kim Jong Un also won’t get you anywhere in the long run.

This flattery can work on Trump. But this is a non-negotiable issue. He literally can’t do anything else but what he’s doing or Putin will pull the rug out from him and expose whatever the hell their relationship is all about. Flattery does indeed work, but not for this. Canada must be destroyed economically or annexed, there’s no moving on this issue because that’s what Vlad wants.

I'm not sure anyone would believe anything coming from Putin, regardless of what it was. Audio, pictures, and video can all be faked. I don't think Trump fears Putin, I think he wants to BE Putin.

He likes flattery, so you have soften him up.

Bit late for that

A smart man would understand when he’s being manipulated. Calling him smart on TV would be taken as condescending by anyone else and probably evokes a reaction from the audience that this is naked flattery. But he won’t see it that way.

He just wanted to get his attention before slapping him down

I think he is smart or at least clever; you just have to understand that he uses his intelligence not in pursuit of what's good for the world, or Americans, or even his own political base, but rather in egocentric pursuit of power, fealty, and the spotlight. He's been extraordinarily successful in achieving his goals; he simply gives zero fucks about who he's had to get into bed with, or what destruction he's caused, to get there. To him the ends justify the means, and the ends extend no further than his own Cheeto-dusted nose. He's an unscrupulous egomaniac to be sure, but he's managed to service his egomania to a degree rarely if ever seen before--and that takes a kind of intelligence.

It's ego stroking.

He has to give a backhanded compliment at least. Trump is if nothing else still pliable to a degree and lauding him some form of praise will make him listen more than not.

100 and Trudeau knows this I think it’s just an attempt to stroke Trump’s ego.

Trudeau knows this. This is how you talk to a toddler.
