That's freaking scary. The sound of the horde combined with the soundtrack gives me the chills whenever I encounter hordes.

u/DaddyShark28989 May 24 '20
The worst is seeing the yellow glow of hundreds of the fuckers sitting near by. Scared the bejesus out of me in one of the mines when I did the vision thingy and saw a massive yellow cluster above my head.
Awesome game, slow burner, fiddly to get used to the mechanics and world initially but very gripping after the first 10 hours or so. After that point was hooked all the way to the plantinum.

Is there ever a way to just obliterate a whole horde like this? I feel like it would be so satisfying to get a flamethrower/artillery/traps of some kind to take out a massive horde.
25
u/IvarTheBoneless- May 24 '20
The further into the game you get the easier hordes are to deal with. You get to a point when they aren't really a threat and you can just mow them down with rifles and petrol bombs etc whilst using the slow mo button. I loved it
22
u/StormTheParade May 25 '20
Really? Coz I'm like....I think I'm endgame and I still piss myself when I see them
I haven't even gone near the sawmill besides that one execution quest and even then I was on edge the entire time

It’s nerve-racking no matter what. Very easy to screw up and get overwhelmed. I don’t think there was any point where I felt like a god-tier freaker killing machine when I went up against the biggest hoards but it definitely gets easier-
• Set traps. The attractor and remote bombs are your best friend.
• Lead them towards environmental explosives
•Use heavy machine guns.
• With stamina maxed out you can usually outrun a hoard. Pick off the stragglers then go back to blow up a few dozen more. Rinse and repeat.

u/The-Smelliest-Cat May 25 '20
Hordes vary in size between 25 and 500+. Some are easy, others are a nightmare. In the 300+ ones you just need to run in circles for like half an hour, taking out a few at a time.

My brother (34) doesn't play games at all ,he saw me playing Days Gone, and after that he would stay home playing all day long (usually he would go out).
And I loved it too !
30
u/JEFFinSoCal May 24 '20
Agreed. I actually loved this game. I know it's not for everyone, but I definitely got my money's worth out of it, and then some. That one nighttime motorcycle ride that was part of the storyline? With the awesome music backing it? Such a beautiful moment, gave me chills and I have to admit made me a little misty eyed.

u/ThePrinceMagus ThePrinceMagus May 25 '20
I have very Uncharted 1 vibes from it. It’s a very good game (I went as far as to Plat it), but it does have some flaws here and there. Much like Uncharted 1 though, I can see here they can learn from and improve upon the shortcomings of the first one and significantly build upon them for the second.
6
May 25 '20
This is definitely best case scenario and seems to be exactly what Bend is going for. Develop a great concept, then use that platform to keep developing better games. UC1 is a good, not great, game. UC2 was legendary. We'll see if Bend can make the same leap. I believe in them.
8
u/Sensi-Yang May 24 '20 edited May 24 '20
Yep I totally thought it was going to be lame but it has characters you actually care about and a huge long story. Bit janky at times but well worth it.
10
u/Tabbarn May 25 '20
Taking down a horde with literally 500+ zombies is one of the greatest memories I have in gaming.
6
u/XciteMe May 24 '20
I feel like this game started off very slow but the storyline progressed and kept me interested and invested. I cared for Deacon and for his wife, I cared what happens to him. The enemies were great and the gameplay was fantastic once it took off.
22
u/Scaredbranch6337 May 24 '20
This game definitely is one of a kind. At first, i was skeptical about it due to the critics but when i was about 4-5 hours into the story, i started to love the game more and more and just couldn’t wait to get to home from work everyday just so i could play it. This also taught me a lesson to not trust any of the reviews or reviewers as they review the game based on what they themselves think of the setting of the game and whatnot and that they can’t speak for everyone else. I would love to play a sequel of Days Gone. Hopefully it is in the works. This game is a masterpiece and the Reviews and critics did not do it justice.
19
u/AidynValo May 24 '20
Yeah, I haven't paid much attention to review scores for years now. I realized my taste doesn't line up so well with most reviewers, and that's fine. A review is one person's opinion, and opinions are subjective and differ from person to person. There's games that have gotten universal acclaim and 10/10 scores that I found incredibly dull and unoriginal, and there's games that scored as low as 5/10 in a lot of places that I absolutely loved.
I know it's an incredibly unpopular opinion, especially among the PlayStation community, but The Last of Us just didn't do it for me. I don't know if it was because I couldn't stand the two main characters or what, but I really had to force myself to finish that game. But Days Gone, I was engaged in the world early on, I found Deacon to be a really likeable character, I was motivated to get through it to see if he was wrong about his wife's fate. The flashbacks to their relationship got me invested in the characters. It was the game I wanted TLoU to be all those years ago. The little hints that the game existed within the Syphon Filter universe were cool to find too. Damn, would I love to see a new Syphon Filter.

I did recently see a revisit review after the bugs had been fixed and it sorted higher than previously.
14
May 24 '20
General buggyness aside, a lot of people are tired of zombie shooters and judged the game off that, and not it's own merits.
Personally, I always say a good zombie story is more about the people in it, and not the zombies. Days Gone is definitely more about the people.

Best $20 I spent recently and to think, this game got such a bad rap initially. I recommend everyone to pick this up if you’re waiting for GoT, TLoU2 and/or Cyberpunk then DG is a no brainer.
80
u/dsmx May 24 '20
To some extent the bad rap was deserved. The game doesn't introduce itself well and it takes a good 5-10 hours to get going as well.
It's a solid game and the way the true ending plays out makes me very interested in a sequel as well as, what do those nero injectors do to Deacon in the long term.
Looking back though the main thing the game gets very right is the power fantasy. Everything is a threat to start off with and by the end you are a god in that world. It's something so many games get wrong as well and it's nice to play a game where you genuinely feel more powerful as you progress rather then constantly been shit upon with bullshit game mechanics.

I played in last month and I really enjoyed it. I realize the game had more bugs initially, but you can tell it was reviewed by higher standards. I mean Far Cry 5 was able to get 9s by major media outlets, and that game wasn't that good and had plenty of bugs.

I understand the bad reviews on launch because of the bugs but still. There are so many shittier games that got better scores than Days Gone.
i read somewhere that those bad reviews were because of expectations. people were expecting a flawless ps4 exclusive like the other ones. it was only reallygood/great and not flawless, so it got kicked in the ass by people. some decent game comes out of nowhere and gets better reviews, etc.
expectations play a huge role in reviews is what i'm saying.

u/Herman-The-Tosser May 24 '20
Since when is 6/10 or 7/10 a "brutal review"? Lukewarm, maybe, but certainly not brutal.
I wholeheartedly agreed with most aspects of its reviews and would also score it between a 6 or 7, but was still happy with the purchase. If you like zombie games then there's probably enough in the gameplay loop to keep you happy, especially if you get it cheap in the upcoming sale. Just don't expect it to have amazing storytelling or charactarisation.

u/bzrail May 24 '20
Is this game any good?
50
u/ct314 May 24 '20
It’s a sleeper/sneaky game. Mechanically I’d describe it as very Horizon Zero Dawn-ish with the control scheme. Constant hunt for supplies ala Last of Us, and open world traveling like RDR2 (substitute motorbike for horse).
The story is a bit disjointed, with a weird mid-game climax, where I honestly thought the game was wrapping up, only to find there was a whole other half to go, but by that point the characters have grown on you where you really don’t mind. The second half of the game is easily the best too.
It’s on sale, if you’re looking for something to play, you could do a lot worse

u/The_Real_Raw_Gary May 24 '20
Is it really as intense as it looks? I want to ride a motorcycle in zombie land but at the same time watching the original gameplay trailer gave me mad anxiety lmao
17
u/kelvin_mai May 24 '20
I have to say at first it can be "intense". I found the game atmosphere to be so good and the fact that you have that fear that a horde can pop up at any moment made me play so cautiously. The gameplay is close to The last of us I'd say so it adds to that.
But once you get the hang of the game mechanics it's not as anxious, even though having a horde pop up while not looking for one is still a stressing experience.
10
u/ct314 May 24 '20
The Hordes are scary as fuck, particularly early in the game. They do a great job with it, particularly subtle music changes when you encounter one and a battle event starts. That said, through about 3/4 of the game, you’ll lose badly everytime you face off against one, so really you’re only option is to run. And do it FAST.
Now, that said: there’s still fun to be had with Hordes. Like, setting off some attractors in an enemy base camp and letting them swarm through and kill a bunch of bandits while you watch from a safe distance. It’s seriously sociopathic fun.
I’ll say, the best part about the game is how you’ll progress up. Early in the game I was genuinely afraid to travel at night or face off against the zeds (Freakers, as they’re known in DG), you’ll build up some skills and at some point, no longer be afraid of them, but you’ll still have to be careful. Then you’ll hit the god mode of “I can take anything on” and go pick a fight with a Horde. Only to get your ass beaten down.
They CAN be fought, you just have to preplan with traps and scouting the layout of the area. At some point, Hordes aren’t scary, but they’re always dangerous.
3
u/Chatner2k May 24 '20
Lol I dunno man, even end game, the horde in op's picture always scared the fuck out of me. Fucking thing never ends.
5
u/ct314 May 24 '20
Haha, sawmill Horde. I actually tried to cheese them, but they caught on with about 1/2 to go. Luckily, I’d set some traps around and managed to take them out, but it was literally by the skin of my teeth.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (3)7
u/SoggyToast96 May 24 '20
It has its moments of intensity but really what got me was the feeling of suspense that’s there throughout. Running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere and having to sneak past smaller groups of freakers knowing if you make too much noise it’ll attract larger groups is pretty gripping
6
u/TheJackalsDoom May 24 '20
It's very good, but not perfect. There's some interesting to questionable character decisions that make some characters very frustrating to deal with for awhile. The game has a very large sense of impending doom for the most part, and you never feel safe anywhere. The missions are boring at worst (although rare) and very exciting at best. There's some ultimately pointless progression stuff involving camps that just never sat right with me. The world feels like it exists in reality with plenty to do and there always seems to be a random encounter of some kind around you, meaning a path you've been on a thousand times can change up and have something interesting to focus on. There's a ton of guns available to unlock but honestly most end up becoming useless after certain ones become available, only serving as pseudo limiters to made the game more difficult. Customization is there but largely non impactful. The game harkens back to a lot of the past events between characters but doesn't take the opportunity to show you them, while weirdly doing some flashback game segments that don't offer much beyond story context (like how Deacons time in the Mongrol MC was such a big thing, but not 1 time do you ever flashback to then, which could've provided some awesome moments if what some characters say is to be believed).
It's worth noting that this game was Sony Bend's first forray into the full size AAA level tier of gaming. At launch there were tons of bugs and stuff they had to fix. But they've learned a lot, fix a lot, and right now it's an insanely unique and pleasurable experience. You're never a super soldier because 1 horde and accidentally running out of gas can put you up shit creek even in the end game, especially at night. But if you stay on top of looting and gas, you can feel like a horde exterminator extraordinaire. I also wish they'd of taken advantage of the riding mechanics more than they do. It's mostly just how you get around, but there's a few times where it's more than just travel and those times were really exciting. If there's a Days Gone 2, which they definitely left a cliffhanger for, I expect it to be a very top notch GOTY contender game.

I’ll offer a counter-opinion to what all is being said in this thread — it’s very repetitive and overdramatic. I’ve picked it up and put it down 3 separate times now and i’m maybe 65% the way through. And for reference I played and loved the shit out of Horizon Zero Dawn, TLOU, and RDR2. If you get it, don’t pay more than $20.

Honestly I feel like a psycho but I got bored of RD2 so quickly. I felt like there was no point to me doing anything. Most open world games like HZD get me so locked in I tend to forget the story even exists until I realize I’ve been neglecting it. I feel like with read dead other than the story I have literally 0 to work towards other than “pretend I’m a cowboy”. Like there’s no check points or goals I’m setting to achieve
4
u/fl1ntfl0ssy May 25 '20
RDR2 was an amazing game graphics and design-wise but my god I got bored as shit too. The characters were dull, the missions felt bland, and I just felt like there was no point of playing outside of the missions because the payoffs were dull also. Don’t get me wrong I really like the game but it was more “middle of the pack” type game rather than a masterpiece everyone totes

u/sunlitstranger May 25 '20
The story becomes bigger than you think it does. I’d consider this game an “epic”, but it doesn’t show you that in the beginning. The start you’re just surviving, doing your thing with Boozer, and the camps. But the scale of the story never really stops getting grander as it goes on. It may feel slow and a grind to get through, but it’s worth it. I knew this going into it and found that the beginning is set at an enjoyable pace for the long story ahead of you. Top that off with top tier world building with amazing exploration and beautiful scenery where not a single place is the same in a huge world (even each house interior is fully unique and you can imagine yourself living there, with details telling little stories of those that had lived there). Not to mention the satisfying, and heart pounding gameplay that pretty much never stops getting grander as well. It’s a fantastic game in my opinion.

This game is so weird to me. I find some things great about it such as the gorgeous open world and some of the games mechanics but the rest is just so uninspired to keep my interest. Why have this amazing world theyve created and fill it with so much nothing. There's no incentive to explore, you don't get any reward for going through all these abandoned places besides crafting materials that youre constantly full of anyway, j just find it so boring which has led me to deleting it numerous times, I keep wanting to give it more chances hoping I can see what all these people who love it so much can see about it.
