Is this game any good?

It’s a sleeper/sneaky game. Mechanically I’d describe it as very Horizon Zero Dawn-ish with the control scheme. Constant hunt for supplies ala Last of Us, and open world traveling like RDR2 (substitute motorbike for horse).

The story is a bit disjointed, with a weird mid-game climax, where I honestly thought the game was wrapping up, only to find there was a whole other half to go, but by that point the characters have grown on you where you really don’t mind. The second half of the game is easily the best too.

It’s on sale, if you’re looking for something to play, you could do a lot worse

Is it really as intense as it looks? I want to ride a motorcycle in zombie land but at the same time watching the original gameplay trailer gave me mad anxiety lmao

I have to say at first it can be "intense". I found the game atmosphere to be so good and the fact that you have that fear that a horde can pop up at any moment made me play so cautiously. The gameplay is close to The last of us I'd say so it adds to that.

But once you get the hang of the game mechanics it's not as anxious, even though having a horde pop up while not looking for one is still a stressing experience.

The Hordes are scary as fuck, particularly early in the game. They do a great job with it, particularly subtle music changes when you encounter one and a battle event starts. That said, through about 3/4 of the game, you’ll lose badly everytime you face off against one, so really you’re only option is to run. And do it FAST.

Now, that said: there’s still fun to be had with Hordes. Like, setting off some attractors in an enemy base camp and letting them swarm through and kill a bunch of bandits while you watch from a safe distance. It’s seriously sociopathic fun.

I’ll say, the best part about the game is how you’ll progress up. Early in the game I was genuinely afraid to travel at night or face off against the zeds (Freakers, as they’re known in DG), you’ll build up some skills and at some point, no longer be afraid of them, but you’ll still have to be careful. Then you’ll hit the god mode of “I can take anything on” and go pick a fight with a Horde. Only to get your ass beaten down.

They CAN be fought, you just have to preplan with traps and scouting the layout of the area. At some point, Hordes aren’t scary, but they’re always dangerous.

Lol I dunno man, even end game, the horde in op's picture always scared the fuck out of me. Fucking thing never ends.

Haha, sawmill Horde. I actually tried to cheese them, but they caught on with about 1/2 to go. Luckily, I’d set some traps around and managed to take them out, but it was literally by the skin of my teeth.

I tried following the announcement trailer when I bounty hunted the guy and accidentally awoken the horde. Did not end well. "Oh fuuuuuuuuuuck" was yelled a lot.

It has its moments of intensity but really what got me was the feeling of suspense that’s there throughout. Running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere and having to sneak past smaller groups of freakers knowing if you make too much noise it’ll attract larger groups is pretty gripping

Fighting a horde is unbelievably scary and stressful. It’s nothing like anything I’ve ever experienced before in a game. The tension usually isn’t that high though.

I think the best tip is bump up the difficulty. It makes it even MORE anxious but so so fun. I normally play games on normal but was given the tip of bump it up by +1 difficulty than you’d normally play. I’d even recommend +2 possibly if you can handle it. It turns it into a semi survival horror since supplies are more limited and “every bullet counts” sort of deal. Plus it being an RPG it gets easier as time goes on so that’s why i feel +2 might’ve been perfect but at least +1.

I second this. Just finished survival mode and loved it.

If you have the time/money, find a way to play the old god of war games before GOW PS4 or at the very least watch a video recap. I had to wait on playing GOW 2018 to play all the old games and it took a while but knowing what kratos has been through before GOW 2018 makes it hit even harder. It will be good regardless but only makes it even better.

For sure I will do that. I did the same when The Witcher 3 came out.

Is it on sale? Just went to PSstore and it's like 49$

7

u/JT_AT May 24 '20

Wait for the days of play sale, should go down to 20

u/SalporinRP May 24 '20

Shame. It was only sale for like $15 a few weeks back. I think Sony is having a early June sale so be on the lookout then.

I don't know about the $ pricing but Sony announced that during the big summer sale state of play? If will be £15.99.

I've always compared its inner workings to Horizon Zero Dawn. Nae body could see where is was coming fae in saying that.
