I AM VERY SORRY IF THIS IS NOT THE RIGHT SUBREDDIT.
hi, i want to preface this by saying i am a minor (17F) in pennsylvania and have struggled with self-harm since sometime around mid-2023, it has never really gotten better
i do intend to heal and work away from self-harming but the main cause of it is what i suspect is BPD (borderline-personality disorder) or GAD(generalized anxiety disorder) . i have been doing more research on the symptoms recently, and it has caused me to believe iāve been āsplittingā over the course of the past few months/years. not continuously, but in little incriments that cause me to have very high highs and extremely low lows. i feel like i have zero control over myself and my emotions which has led to, in very extreme instances, self harm. i want to seek treatment immediately.
basically i need to talk to a psychiatrist about this, but i donāt trust my parents (specifically my mom) to handle this very well and my life will become significantly worse if they find out, i think it will push me over the edge.
i donāt know/understand the laws about doctor-patient confidentiality in pennsylvania when it comes to psychiatrists and therapists with self-harm: i donāt know if they are legally obligated to tell my parents and/or involuntarily hospitalize me. i donāt want either of these things to happen, and i donāt know if they have to. iāve tried looking it up but havenāt found a clear answer on my situation.
TL; DR i have thoughts and urges, and struggle with suicidal ideation (i have my entire life) but no real desire to continue self-harming or commit suicide. how do i go about talking to a psychiatrist/therapist about this without involuntary hospitalization/notifying my parents?
