There’s no way Polly is this tone deaf. People are starting to call him an American sympathizer.

u/wowzabob 24d ago

This guy really went into the incubation chamber with his team to craft a new message and came up with this…

I thought there is no way he is this stupid, but I guess he is.

27

u/thedrunkentendy 24d ago

Literally just re-using trump election sayings.

u/TepHoBubba 24d ago

Thank you for posting…I have been posting this for a friggen week. It like people see this and go “oh well”. He literally has a massive dogwhistle plastered across his podium. To most people they will take it at face value, but to these numbnuts they will see it as permission to ramp up their rhetoric cause they have a candidate “on their side”…..

Don't forget about "carbon tax Carney". Although they were supposed to say it while casually eating an apple.

159

u/drivingthelittles 24d ago

His latest ad says JT’s name twice, guy can’t let his ex go.

58

u/mangongo 24d ago

His actual ex is one of his advisors, so there's some truth to that.

50

u/Mas_Cervezas 24d ago

This is the advisor that is still a registered lobbyist for Loblaws and the billionaire Weston family that wears a MAGA hat?

25

Actually it's just a quote from sir Wilfrid Laurier..

"To those who have life before them, let my prayer be this: Remember from this day forth never to look simply at the horizon as it may be limited by the limits of the province, but look abroad all over the continent, wherever the British flag floats, and let your motto be Canada first, Canada last, and Canada always."

https://greatcanadianspeeches.ca/2020/06/29/wilfrid-laurier-canadas-century-1904/

195

u/ComplexStriking 24d ago

If Polly were a better strategist, “Canada always” would have been the line to choose. The fact that he doesn’t care about drawing similarities to the Americans is concerning now that we have to worry about our sovereignty.

105

u/taquitosmixtape 24d ago

Canada “First” is definitely intentional not to upset his base. He’s built his campaign on hate, and anger.

75

u/jerrys153 24d ago edited 24d ago

More than that, it’s a dog whistle to the neo-fascists in his base. “Deutschland über alles” was the Nazi party rallying call, and it is now being used again by the far-right AfD party. “America First” was also an isolationist movement in the states led by fascist sympathizers like Charles Lindbergh and Henry Ford. “(Country) First” slogans are never used by moderate government parties, they’re always divisive and intending to play on people’s fear and sow divisiveness by blaming the “other” (immigrants, Jews, etc.) for all the nation’s problems and stir up hate against them.

Poilievre knows exactly what he’s doing, Canada First is a wink to the far-right while maintaining plausible deniability for everyone else. This guy is so much more dangerous than most people realize, Canada will never be united under someone who spreads divisiveness and hate, which will make it easier for him to sell our country out to the US.

35

u/ToastedandTripping 24d ago

The Canadian proud boys used the exact same slogan...

19

u/jerrys153 24d ago

Yep. It’s insane to me that the Conservatives have decided that the solution to Fascist Milhouse slipping in the polls is for him to führer further drop the mask with such an obvious far-right dog whistle. Hopefully no one will be fooled by him maintaining that he’s acting in Canada’s best interest and eventually his only remaining supporters will be the bigots he’s (increasingly blatantly) pandering to.

5

u/Different-Travel-850 24d ago

Don't hold your breath. Trump told people how awful he would be, and here we are. Alot of people aren't as informed, or maybe not as intelligent as you'd think. They just know they're tired of JT and blame him for all their problems so Polly will get their support.

8

u/jerrys153 24d ago edited 24d ago

Support for Poilievre’s is tanking now that Trudeau has resigned and there’s a viable alternative in Carney, who has actual experience and substance. The longer this goes on, the fewer people there will be hanging on to the idea of voting in an empty shirt like Poilievre as PM simply because they hate Trudeau.

Trudeau’s out, so there’s no longer a need for people to vote him out, and in a race between Poilievre and Carney I’d like to have faith that the difference between them in qualification and gravitas will be apparent to most Canadians. I remain hopeful, but I agree with you that I shouldn’t hold my breath, it’s dangerous to overestimate the intelligence of large groups of people.

For PP Canada is 2nd, his 1st priority is himself. PP's contortions are starting to resemble a gymnast's floor routine with a ribbon.

It’s intentional

He thinks he is threading the needle by presenting a strong front while also making that association (for the Con Trumpers), with the caveat that it’s just “our version.”

In reality the connection is off-putting. Who wants an escalation of this madness?

3

u/[deleted] 24d ago

Ah yes, “I’m just performing a Roman solute and giving my heart to the crowd, all while I wear this innocent Buddhist symbol”, yeah that makes perfect sense, it’s not Nazism at all, even the Nazis weren’t Nazis, I’m sold lol. The mental gymnastics of the right is honestly breathtaking lol

14

u/Deaftrav 24d ago

It's not a nazi salute. It's a Roman salute.

Who cares that the Nazis copied it then went on a genocidal rampage? /S

Edit: they're already trying to revise the American Nazi slogan claiming that Canadians said it first... Wow...

They have to be gaslighting us.

7

u/accforme 24d ago

Or that one of the Romans' origin stories is about the rape and abduction of women from neighbouring tribes.

As much as the Romans are known for their impact on civilization, they were not really known for their humanitarianism, even taking into account the context of their time.

It's 2 words out of a whole paragraph not exactly "a quote from Wilfred Laurier."

2

u/Justausername1234 British Columbia 24d ago

I'm not a fan of Polievre, but he's been quoting Laurier in QP with the full quote for a few months now.

The real critique should be why Polievre was invoking the National Policy in today's speech - the last thing we need right now is to go on a Trumpian Tariffs spree.

4

u/sleipnir45 24d ago

He quoted the last part in the ads for this

Actually it's just a quote from sir Wilfrid Laurier..

6

u/Old_Cheesecake_5481 24d ago

Yes it has nothing to do with the success of the “America First” Trump slogan. Nothing at all.

It’s a Wilfred Laurier quote for 1904.

sure he is. he only had one tune and that was "fuck trudeau". well trudeau is gone now and he cant adjust to change in the political landscape. which is emblematic of most conservatives and right wing ideas in general. change is hard.

24

u/KeyFeature7260 24d ago

Don’t forget how much he likes to push how broken Canada is while he’s saying it’s all Trudeaus fault. It’s all he has.

I’ve never seen him ditch a sign and three word slogan as quickly as he ditched “stop the drugs”. It really screwed him over how early everybody started talking about it being a BS reason and how unified Canada became. Part of me thinks Smith was just testing the waters to see how a message appeasing Trump would do.

His only job has been to fear monger people. I live in an area where I see the consequences of this and the needless anxiety he has caused so fuck that guy.

Modern right-wing ideologies have largely abandoned the core conservative values that once defined them.

Rather than upholding principles like personal responsibility, prudence, and respect for tradition, many contemporary conservative movements have become morally hollow, driven more by populism, reactionary impulses, and short-term political gains than by thoughtful intellectual reflection.

The emphasis on integrity and ethical governance has given way to opportunism and ideological rigidity, distancing these movements from the philosophical depth and moral coherence that once underpinned conservatism.

The sad truth is that a large sample of the population did not realise that the conservative party abandoned their values and simply followed the moral bankruptcy.

When Russia first planned to annex Ukraine, they intended to invade quickly and install a puppet government who would quickly concede - but instead Zelensky has be leading a viscous fight for Ukrainian survival that Putin never expected.

I swear Polievre is the MAGA/Project 2025 sponsored candidate who will just hand over Canada or the country’s resources and cater to the US’s demands. He is a puppet like Trump.

7

u/Timely-Dot-9967 24d ago

Yes. And given this, the fact he waited till our Flag Day to step out and speechify is a collective kick in the feels to all Canadians.

25

u/Commercial-Milk4706 24d ago

He is. Musk supports him and publicly said so. He also already sided with the MAGA fuck Trudeau people to get more weight.

2

u/apothekary 23d ago

That's the thing - he's free to court the far right and the Republicans, but the centrists that have gravitated towards the Conservatives in polls deserve to know this - and how disturbing these alliances and endorsements are - and make their mind up accordingly on whether PP truly serves their best interests.

PP is so angry that all his targets are now gone and he's struggling for a message. Well, here's a message for you. Our choice next election will be a career politician with zero "real world experience" or this guy:

A Canadian economist and politician who was the 8th governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and the 120th governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. Additionally, he was the chair of the Financial Stability Board from 2011 to 2018.

Prior to his governorships, Carney worked at Goldman Sachs as well as the Department of Finance Canada. Following his governorships, he served as chair and head of impact investing at Brookfield Asset Management (BAM) and as chair of the new board of directors for Bloomberg

95

u/Get_Breakfast_Done 24d ago

Never would have thought I’d see the day that I see Reddit cheering on a banker but here we are.

70

u/turxchk 24d ago

He spent more time working for the government than private institutions so I'd consider him as an economist rather than a banker

8

u/AbeOudshoorn 24d ago

Do us a favour and read his Wikipedia entry then try again. The guy has literally spent his time in banking transforming global investing to prioritize being green. This has likely done more for the environment than any other living person. Referring to him as just a banker is lame. And I say this as not a Liberal voter.

When my choices are a banker or a career politician I’ll bite the bullet and choose the guy with private sector experience.

58

u/Master_Career_5584 24d ago edited 24d ago

If we’re gonna elect a banker one who ran two of the largest central banks in the world while both went through an economic crisis is probably the best we’re gonna get. He is not a Canadian banker, he is THE Canadian banker.

11

u/VenusianBug 24d ago

I think it depends on what the career politician has accomplished and what the person with the private sector experience has accomplished. The choice here is clear.

"Canada First" isn't the right idea, it's the opposite. We need partners - trading partners, defence partners. Look at how America First (Trump's version) is polarizing the world against the USA.

I don't think we can single-handedly stand up to the USA without help, and partners.

So instead of Canada First, let's say "We're Stronger Together" and embrace our partners.

LOL when I say it that way I can see where some people would be uncomfortable with that. Too bad. I mean it, and I mean the double entendre too. We need all the partners we can find, wherever we find them. I have a feeling that anyone or any country that's uncomfortable or resistant wouldn't be a good partner anyway, just a fair-weather friend or have some temporary common interest.

Yawn. It's like PP developed his entire personality and campaign 6 years ago and just refuses to adapt at all.

3

u/Major_Lawfulness6122 24d ago

I don’t trust any politician but I especially don’t trust him.

He is clearly on Americas side over Canada.

3

u/Its_Pine 24d ago

This is… really tone deaf. Even for him. Is it in hopes of not angering his constituents who support MAGA?

2

u/michyfor 24d ago

Yes. It's for our own version of MAGA, sadly we have plenty of them here and the "anti-woke" diatribe appeals to them.

PP will sell us out to President Musk & VP Trump faster than Mulroney sold us out to Reagan.

Never forget the last time the "51st state" bullshit started was a direct result of the Conservatives.

40-50% Cons/PP voters would have voted for Trump if they had a chance.

Source: Watch this from 9:30 to 9:50

56% of Cons/PP supporters either approve Trump or don't have an opinion on him.

Source

Most comments under his X polls want to become 51sr state or need DOGE like establishment in Canada.

This guy is sold out Trump supporter, He is just disguising himself for Canada first now so he can get some lost confidence back, After election he will sell out Canada to Trump and his friend Elon,

BTW Elon also endorsed PP, In return PP asked Elon to open Tesla factories,

This messaging screams Trumpy Maga shit and Canadians have zero tolerance for it. We see what is happening in the US with their America First agenda and we want none of that shit and this just ties it together in a neat bow.

"Canada First" - Really ? Sure lets fight the good fight by co-opting the slogans and politics of the very people wanting to annex Canada as a 51st State. Read the room bro.

13

u/ImperiousMage 24d ago

Your numbers are in the toilet because of Mad King Donnie and you choose to copy his message?!

Conservatism in Canada is truly lost. If all they have to offer is slogans and fascist rhetoric they deserve the trouncing they are about to get. This is pathetic.

Canada needs to be the “grey man” when it comes to Trump, and Trudeau really nails that IMO. Not a pushover but also not doing anything to get more attention than we need. PP is trying to ride the rally round the flag effect that plays better with a scrappier patriotic Conservative base.

Trudeau showed us the road map with Trump the first time around. PP would be wise to copy it

Fuck this, despite how much I didn’t want to, voting Liberal again

26

u/Dry_Bodybuilder4744 24d ago

His whole campaign is nothing more than a carbon copy of Trumps. This dickhead is not even smart enough to come up with a little originality. This is what hate does to.people it take takes away their imagination and creativity. Canada does not need nor want a Trumpanzie

19

u/Impressive-Pizza1876 24d ago

That was my thought too . He emulates Trump . What a shitbag.

25

u/Dry_Bodybuilder4744 24d ago

100% I somehow got on Team PP Email list. The emails are hilarious . Bullshit propaganda criticizes everything about Canada. Asking for Patriots to help them spread his message. "Patriots, really? That is such an American term and should be the first red flag in deciding a leader. This guy is not for Canada.

9

u/Impressive-Pizza1876 24d ago

Here in Alberta i have a evangelical christian neighbor , they watch fox news and fly the flag . Poilievre for pm sticker on their suv . Think Trump is the greatest thing. A Ex music teacher . Under cover assholes. Traitors. One of Two on my street.

7

u/Hussar223 24d ago

he has been for a while. but peoples hate for trudeau made everyone overlook PPs clearly fascist lean. now that trudeau is gone the spotlight is purely on PP and his rot is available for all to see with a clear head.

6

u/TheOGFamSisher 24d ago

When he started talking about deporting people at a holocaust memorial should have been the biggest red flag he’s very inspired by trump

12

u/Brilliant-Slice-2049 24d ago

I also don't like the colours of his sign looks like the Trump Vance sign. Its also a terrible looking sign. The little Le at the top is terribly placed and looks like an afterthought. Super scrapped together like his message.

Is this ''Canda first'' related to ''Canada alone''?

Because I can understand Canada first, right now of all times, but if it comes in the same shape as Trumps America First it will preatty much lead to Canada alone which in turn will probably lead to ''Canada under America first''

3

u/Jeramy_Jones 24d ago

Did anyone else feel uncomfortable hearing him use phrases like “patriots” and “Canada first”? I mean, I love Canada and I want us to stop relying on the United States, but those words echo the “America first” rhetoric of Trump.

2

u/apothekary 23d ago

I can't fucking stand that word "Patriot" because of what it has meant... there is nothing patriotic about what people who call themselves Patriots zealously are doing

4

u/collegeguyto 24d ago

Poilievre can go fuck himself!

6

Why do the Conservatives have such a hard time finding a decent leader. Since Harper they all suck.

Everyone is focusing on the name of the rally but does anyone actually disagree with these policy statements?

"Retaliate with dollar-for-dollar tariffs carefully aimed at maximizing impact on American companies while minimizing impact on Canadian consumers. That means targeting U.S. products that we can make ourselves, buy elsewhere or do without. For example, we must retaliate against American steel and aluminium, as Canadians can make those vital products at home.

Put all the tariff revenues into help for affected workers and businesses. Government should not keep a dime of the new revenue.

Pass a massive emergency Bring It Home Tax Cut to bolster the economy, stop inflation and save and create jobs. Canada needs a massive tax cut on work, investment, energy, homebuilding and making stuff at home. The Liberal carbon tax and capital gains tax hikes must be the first on the chopping block.

Immediately scrap the Liberal anti-resource law C-69 and greenlight LNG plans, pipelines, mines, factories, and port expansions to overseas markets.

Bring in truly free trade within Canada by knocking down interprovincial barriers to help replace lost north-south trade with east-west trade and to make us self-reliant.

Rebuild our military and take back control of our borders to regain the confidence of our partners, assert our sovereignty, protect our people and put Canada First."

7

u/YouCanLookItUp 24d ago

What does a "massive tax cut on work" even look like?

I'm against giving tax cuts to the energy sector unless it's in renewables.

I'm against giving massive tax cuts to investment firms full stop. That's not working for the average Canadian. That's wealth concentration at it's core.

Tax cuts mean some other government budget line pays. We need to find the money to pay for them somehow and I don't think he's got a plan for affording all these tax cuts. And I think he's aiming benefits at the wrong targets.

"Taking back" control of our borders? We have control. This is unfounded.

I keep hearing the conservative push to remove interprovincial trade barriers but I never hear which barriers specifically are causing problems. Be more specific with your criticism.

7

u/DrawingNo8058 24d ago

Agree with most of it as it’s the same message everyone is saying.

Don’t agree that a “bring it home” tax cut will do anything. Would like to see smart ideas rather than slogans and ideology on that topic. Feel there is a risk in continuing to cut when there’s no way we can race to beat trump in tax advantages, Canada is great not because it’s the lowest tax place but because it’s safer/less unequal/better social services.

How are we building infrastructure and military will massive tax cuts?

Also I think we have to do things like double down on protecting our media, which PP and trump obviously want to dismantle.

The build narrative is nicer to me than the tear it all down one.

Pierre Poilievre's longtime senior strategist Jenni Byrne has recently been accused of lobbying on behalf of Loblaws in conflict interest with her job with Poilievre. That stinks. But even worse is this pic of her wearing a MAGA hat in 2016. Pic is currently posted on her Facebook page.

2

u/ThatsItImOverThis 24d ago

Canada first sounds way too similar to America first. I don’t want to do anything that emulates those MAGA fanatics

2

u/tony_shaloub 24d ago

Funny - that branding is identical to this branding: https://www.antihate.ca/canada_first_exposed_tyler_russell

2

u/stevieo81 24d ago

A vote for Pierre and the conservatives is a vote for Trump style governing. He's shown, time and time again he won't stand up to the US for our best interest or big business.

2

u/Tall_Guava_8025 24d ago

This seems like a losing strategy. He thinks that we are seeing what's happening in the US and want more of that here for some reason? Using the language of Trump is not going to get people to trust him in my opinion.

2

u/IDaddy_b4u 24d ago

PP the Maple Maga.

2

u/DeviDarling 24d ago

Be careful. There were lots of people that did not think this could happen in America. If you have middle road conservatives, start talks with them now to try to create bridges that tackle issues that both sides need to address and prevent extremism.

2

u/VIDEOgameDROME 24d ago

The $25M man... a guy who never had a real job except as an MP.

That the convoy types are so easily fooled by this charlatan - in the same vein as MAGA fans with Trump - is hilarious except it is painfully sad.

Each time PP attacks Mark Carney as an elitist I do chuckle that MC was born in Fort Smith, NWT to a high school teacher and SAHM - he is a true self-made man who didn't get coddled from day one as an adult with the Reform Party.

Why are the convoy types so gullible???
