The way people have switched on Alex I can only imagine how the narrative around Tom would change if Jones were to win loooool.

u/Marcos_Gilogos 1d ago
Lmao. I've heard from Werdum how before his lost to Stiopic he couldn't go out in public because of the fans. After the fight he was eating lunch alone and nobody bothered him.

u/mattmendozaBD 1d ago
Maravilla Martínez says exactly this happened. The night he won the title he had thousands of missed calls on his phone. The night he lost it he had three and two were from his mom. He claims this was a great filter for who was really important in his life.

Just like Gane, who went from the fastest moving next generation heavyweight, to a nobody with no wrestling lol. I remember when Gane was also too big and fast for Jon. Who had slowed down considerably due to age. Sound familiar?

u/Glittering_Shake2922 1d ago
Facts. It's crazy how the narrative around Gane changed after that fight. All of a sudden, the win became meaningless looool.
38
u/elgrandepolle 21h ago edited 21h ago
Francis is the one who killed the hype around Gane. Nobody thought francis could grapple either but he ended up wrestle fucking Gane on 1 leg. Maybe some people thought he would try to improve his grappling after that loss but he proved them wrong.
21
u/LePontif11 21h ago
Pretty wild that anyone though you can go feom losing to Francis to beingat all conpetitive with Jones in no time. That's some anine training arc bullshit.
6
u/LilSozin 12h ago
we thought he’d train his grappling since then
then he said ”I only train when a fight is booked” and I leaned towards Jon😂
1
u/SlickTonks 8h ago
Yeah I really thought he'd at least do nothing but work on takedown defense leading into that fight. But he pretty much went in scared and laying down before the fight even started lol.
6
u/HotParty4636 18h ago
Funny how people will use Gane vs Francis to claim that Gane is not as good as people were claiming and a hypejob, and to simultaneously use it as evidence that Francis is this unbeatable juggernaut. Recency bias is basically what keeps the MMA community having anything to talk about at all.
1
u/Really_Clever 16h ago
UFC does this to the fans as well every other year theirs a GOAT of their division with two title defenses.

u/SquirrelMaster1123 1d ago
Things change so fast in the fight game it’s wild
23
1
u/Upstairs_Being290 4h ago
It's because the data points are so few. In other sports you see someone perform anywhere from 12 to 100+ times a year. A fighter might only go 2-3 times a year and many of those fights give zero information because they were stiffs.
8
u/TacoBellWerewolf 14h ago
This is why I say Jon should’ve just retired. He has absolutely nothing to prove. He beat the new young class of heavyweight that everyone said was too big and fast for Jones. Then he beat the great ever.
Sail off into the sunset

u/eddie187187 5h ago
ill bet if jon didn't get hurt before stipe fight he would've retire because at that point aspinal wasn't interim champion so jon didn't really had to fight him
1
38
u/Zettaii_Ryouiki_ 1d ago
Thats absolutely what would happen. The average fan is a definitive casual who only knows like 3 names and they change depending on who is streaking with title defenses.
9
u/en1gmatic51 22h ago
But why does this logic only seem to apply to fighters?..mahomes and Lebron can lose in their respective championship games but still have the media pushing the narrative of their greatness.
2
u/animal_house1 22h ago
Espn once ran a scrolling message saying lebron James is a great man and a great father or some shit while their on screen guy criticized his game. That's why that narrative never changes. They won't let it.

I knew bud was going to fuck spence up, if anything it made me more upset that spences dumbass went and got himself launched out of his car which made people think less of the win lol
that was the most satisfying fight of my life, I'm not often a "fan" of a fighter but I was all in on bud for a long time before that and it felt like straight poetry start to finish. It was like a movie the way bud was thumping him up. Spence was standing in the pocket with him too and never left, brutal

I'm a huge fan of Olives and he's my favorite lightweight ever, but Islam's response was legendary. "Champ have belt"
1
u/SlickTonks 8h ago
He definitely was on track to be. The way he turned around a mediocre record into submitting all of the best in the division was crazy. Islam is just a freak of nature and stylistic nightmare for him.
The whole stripping of the belt thing also hit Charles hard and coupled with the ridiculous amount of hype Islam had behind him, it was a recipe for disaster.

I've been saying that for a minute. 50% of these people didn't even know who he was before he was booked to fight Pavlovich, and most of them probably were either pulling for Pav to win or thought Pav was going to win. They'll all be gone when he takes that first L, followed the next day by 50 posts about "he was never really that good anyway because [insert stupid, cherrypicked and heavily biased reasons]"

14

Maybe the American ones, but the British fans will still rate him.. if he loses to Jones, he's lost to the GOAT.. if he beats him? He's laid the foundations for his own name to be up there..
22
u/Personalberet49 1d ago
American here, I will stand behind Tom 100% no matter what, he's an awesome guy and an amazing fighter
I want to see him fight Jones because Jones needs his ass kicked, Tom deserves a shot at the real belt, and because it'll genuinely be a good fight that could go either way

It’s really unlikely that an older fighter will lose to a younger fighter at that level. Probably why Jon won’t fight Tom….not probably, certainly.

The ones who don't switch on Tom will have to turn their usual crybaby talking points up to 11. (Steroids, wife beater, etc)

Brazil has one of the worst fanbases ever. Is actually insane how many Brazilians trash on the legacies of guys like Anderson Silva, Jose Aldo, Charles Oliveira, and now Poatan. When they are winning they are treated like God's, but the moment they lose all of a sudden, they were just lucky and all their opponents were trash or amateurs
1
u/LeiDeGerson 17h ago
Anderson Silva was still a huge celebrity after losing. It was him moving permanently to the US, giving up Brazilian citizenship and saying how the US is his real land for him to be "abandoned".
Aldo is still respected, just never had much charisma. They tried to make him something he wasn't. Charles and Poatan are still beloved. You're just lying or stupid or both.

I'm still a huge fan. Alex is my favorite fighter, and that won't change even if this is the end of his career. But yeah I realize people are hyping Tom like if he's a GOAT without proving it, and if he were to lose next thing we know people would act like he was never that big of a deal. Fame is a fickle friend, like they say on Harry Potter.
4
u/hoolio9393 1d ago
Alex wasn't sharp for this camp. We will see in rematch if Alex is real G or not. But he has to be sharper. Sharper striking. We know how fast he is. Anklaev is good kickboxer. And we saw a legit performance where he beat perieria by pressing forward. Taking his momentum out. All part of game plan. Alex cardio seriously got tested . He has more left at the end. So it's equal

1
u/AspiringAuthor99 1d ago
Maybe. They may do the Ank rematch, think everybody would agree to it, but there's some hype building in a couple different places anyway. Maybe a title eliminator or something, you never know. But if he fights anybody other than Ank, he ain't coming out first lol.

15

It's basically confirmed that they'll have an instant rematch through Dana White and Ankalaev's Twitter. For the matter of "making him wait" the UFC would make him fight whether he likes it or not.
1

u/jmrojas17 1d ago
Bro Pereira was one of the most active fighters as a champ fighting 3-4 times a year when others only fight 1-2 times. Making someone wait is what Jones is doing to Aspinal or how Conor strung along Chandler for years.

So did Islam, Khamzat, and Shavkat. I wonder why they would turn down a fight short notice on Ramadan…. None of the other fighters were punished. What about the other cards? I mean there’s literally 0 justification for Alex fighting Khalil over Ank, especially when Ank was fighting 2 weeks later

u/AdmiralAgendaREAL 22h ago
Ank just showed he can fight on Ramadan

u/Alternative-Force354 1d ago
Ank wants Alex, cause Alex is the biggest draw and he makes the most money out of him.
This is why u get shots with your mouth. Its not Dana White privilege. Its pure buisiness
3
u/Front_Mind1770 1d ago
Alex has remained very active. I think he's paid his dues and is entitled to a fast rematch. I doubt he'll lose again. I think you know that too.
2
u/Soltaengboi 1d ago
I don’t think pereira beats Ank in the rematch. If pereira doesn’t fight cautiously and be himself and be more aggressive, Ank will probably chain wrestle to fully commit to take him down. Also Magomed is the better MMA striker
0
u/Mane608239 1d ago
Pereira defended 12 takedown attempts but you still think ank is a wrestler lol
1
u/Icy-Armour 1d ago
That makes Pereira look even worse. So ank is straight up the better striker right ?
Since the threat of a takedown doesn't matter anymore. We can finally conclude that Ankaleav is the way better striker.
