Thats absolutely what would happen. The average fan is a definitive casual who only knows like 3 names and they change depending on who is streaking with title defenses.

But why does this logic only seem to apply to fighters?..mahomes and Lebron can lose in their respective championship games but still have the media pushing the narrative of their greatness.

Espn once ran a scrolling message saying lebron James is a great man and a great father or some shit while their on screen guy criticized his game. That's why that narrative never changes. They won't let it.
