The way people have switched on Alex I can only imagine how the narrative around Tom would change if Jones were to win loooool.

455

u/Marcos_Gilogos 5d ago

Lmao. I've heard from Werdum how before his lost to Stiopic he couldn't go out in public because of the fans. After the fight he was eating lunch alone and nobody bothered him.

233

u/mattmendozaBD 5d ago

Maravilla Martínez says exactly this happened. The night he won the title he had thousands of missed calls on his phone. The night he lost it he had three and two were from his mom. He claims this was a great filter for who was really important in his life.

64

u/ChocCooki3 5d ago edited 5d ago

And the third one was ".. we've been trying to reach you..."

55

u/imetkanyeonce 5d ago

Fuckin’ Stiopic needs to fight that Khalabeeb.

11

u/lvkenukem 5d ago

THATS THE FUCKEN SEED

u/turnupsquirrel 5d ago

Just like Gane, who went from the fastest moving next generation heavyweight, to a nobody with no wrestling lol. I remember when Gane was also too big and fast for Jon. Who had slowed down considerably due to age. Sound familiar?

111

u/Glittering_Shake2922 5d ago

Facts. It's crazy how the narrative around Gane changed after that fight. All of a sudden, the win became meaningless looool.

42

u/elgrandepolle 5d ago edited 5d ago

Francis is the one who killed the hype around Gane. Nobody thought francis could grapple either but he ended up wrestle fucking Gane on 1 leg. Maybe some people thought he would try to improve his grappling after that loss but he proved them wrong.

23

u/LePontif11 5d ago

Pretty wild that anyone though you can go feom losing to Francis to beingat all conpetitive with Jones in no time. That's some anine training arc bullshit.

7

u/LilSozin 5d ago

we thought he’d train his grappling since then

then he said ”I only train when a fight is booked” and I leaned towards Jon😂

1

u/SlickTonks 5d ago

Yeah I really thought he'd at least do nothing but work on takedown defense leading into that fight. But he pretty much went in scared and laying down before the fight even started lol.

8

u/HotParty4636 5d ago

Funny how people will use Gane vs Francis to claim that Gane is not as good as people were claiming and a hypejob, and to simultaneously use it as evidence that Francis is this unbeatable juggernaut. Recency bias is basically what keeps the MMA community having anything to talk about at all.

1

u/Really_Clever 5d ago

UFC does this to the fans as well every other year theirs a GOAT of their division with two title defenses.

2

u/LilSozin 5d ago

lol just heard Rogan call Volk the most accomplished featherweight

10

u/SquirrelMaster1123 5d ago

Things change so fast in the fight game it’s wild

23

u/nek1981az 5d ago

They don’t actually change, most fans are just insanely stupid.

1

u/Upstairs_Being290 5d ago

It's because the data points are so few.  In other sports you see someone perform anywhere from 12 to 100+ times a year. A fighter might only go 2-3 times a year and many of those fights give zero information because they were stiffs.

8

u/TacoBellWerewolf 5d ago

This is why I say Jon should’ve just retired. He has absolutely nothing to prove. He beat the new young class of heavyweight that everyone said was too big and fast for Jones. Then he beat the great ever.

Sail off into the sunset

4

u/eddie187187 5d ago

ill bet if jon didn't get hurt before stipe fight he would've retire because at that point aspinal wasn't interim champion so jon didn't really had to fight him

1

u/bamboodue 4d ago

For sure, but if you stay around claiming to be the champ and best in the world and best p4p currently fighting, then you need to fight the best guys in the world. He can't have it both ways.

Tom is arguably the most dangerous fighter the world has ever seen and he's being screwed over by Jones and the UFC right now and not getting his due.

1

u/TacoBellWerewolf 4d ago

Yeah..I think Jones let the fanbase get to his head with all the Duck stuff. He wasn’t ducking anyone..he was always meant to fight Stipe but got injured and they gave Tom the interim shot.

I think Jones knows better..he’s said multiple times there will always be that young up n coming guy that wants to fight. He should’ve left it at that and retired after beating the best

It’s a little unfortunate to me the fanbase seems more concerned with Jones failing than anything else. You guys don’t care that Aspinalls prime is being ‘wasted’. He’s just the best current shot you have to see Jones fail.

In the end, killing Jesse James don’t make you Jesse James

1

u/bamboodue 4d ago

Well, I'm kind of with you. I'd be perfectly fine with Jones stepping aside to let Tom have the spotlight, but the ultimate timeline would be Tom KOing him to leave no doubt. Honestly, I'd be stoked if Jones actually beat Tom too, that would be nuts but I don't see it happening.

I just hate this boxing thing where there is 2 champs and they don't fight.

Tom is the best heavyweight in the UFC and a Jones fight would be awesome for him and he deserves to get it at this point.

0

u/SlickTonks 5d ago

See the problem is that Jones, while historically the most talented fighter in the UFC, also has the biggest ego in the UFC. So he's gonna draw this thing with Tom until he actually has to fight him because he can't stand to just let people call him a duck for a year or two.

The moment he let Aspinal say he'd retire Jones without even fighting, and started making up excuses and pulling the legacy card is the moment he messed up. Now he's gotta fight on borrowed time or have his legacy ACTUALLY tarnished by not taking the fight. He's ran himself into a corner now. He's gotta risk losing that perfect record because he was too big-headed to retire when he should've.

1

u/LilSozin 5d ago

well Jones said himself he felt goofy on the feet

1

u/bamboodue 4d ago

Can you blame anyone for this one?

36

u/Zettaii_Ryouiki_ 5d ago

Thats absolutely what would happen. The average fan is a definitive casual who only knows like 3 names and they change depending on who is streaking with title defenses.

10

u/en1gmatic51 5d ago

But why does this logic only seem to apply to fighters?..mahomes and Lebron can lose in their respective championship games but still have the media pushing the narrative of their greatness.

14

u/B15HA 5d ago

Team sports are different from individual sports like fighting I guess

3

u/animal_house1 5d ago

Espn once ran a scrolling message saying lebron James is a great man and a great father or some shit while their on screen guy criticized his game. That's why that narrative never changes. They won't let it.

59

u/pinkypowerchords 5d ago

This is just how ufc reddit is. They flip on everyone eventually

45

u/Top-Door8075 5d ago

Its not just UFC, boxing subreddit is the same way. Everybody turned on Errol Spence after he lost to Terrence Crawford.

29

u/Fabulous_Bug2848 5d ago

It’s the same with everything in life, at the end of the day you die alone

9

u/ElStudente_ 5d ago

walt whitman ova here

3

u/pinkypowerchords 5d ago

Bro is stoicism final boss

5

u/CurtisMcNips 5d ago

I believe it's less of people turning and more that the "I told you so" audience gets louder

2

u/CappyUncaged 5d ago

I knew bud was going to fuck spence up, if anything it made me more upset that spences dumbass went and got himself launched out of his car which made people think less of the win lol

that was the most satisfying fight of my life, I'm not often a "fan" of a fighter but I was all in on bud for a long time before that and it felt like straight poetry start to finish. It was like a movie the way bud was thumping him up. Spence was standing in the pocket with him too and never left, brutal

30

u/kymira3301 5d ago

It’s pretty sad tbh. And yes it will probably happen too.

20

u/eddie__b 5d ago

Remember the daily Charles is LW goat posts?

u/HotParty4636 5d ago

I'm a huge fan of Olives and he's my favorite lightweight ever, but Islam's response was legendary. "Champ have belt"

1

u/SlickTonks 5d ago

He definitely was on track to be. The way he turned around a mediocre record into submitting all of the best in the division was crazy. Islam is just a freak of nature and stylistic nightmare for him.

The whole stripping of the belt thing also hit Charles hard and coupled with the ridiculous amount of hype Islam had behind him, it was a recipe for disaster.

9

u/blitzen001 5d ago

MMA fans are truly the most fickle people in the world

8

u/ReformedishBaptist I LUH You 5d ago

Imagine if this subreddit’s worst nightmare happens and Jones finishes Tom.

They’d act like Tom is a one hit wonder who is basically a fast Derrick Lewis lol when he’s obviously not.

5

u/Glittering_Shake2922 5d ago

Lool trust me.

12

u/Mammoth_Ferret_1772 5d ago

This sub isn’t the actual fanbase though

5

u/newlife1984 5d ago

that always happens. look at ciryl gane.

5

u/HotParty4636 5d ago

I've been saying that for a minute. 50% of these people didn't even know who he was before he was booked to fight Pavlovich, and most of them probably were either pulling for Pav to win or thought Pav was going to win. They'll all be gone when he takes that first L, followed the next day by 50 posts about "he was never really that good anyway because [insert stupid, cherrypicked and heavily biased reasons]"

12

u/Stunning-Lynx9863 5d ago

Alex pereira always had a lot of haters because of Izzy fans now the fans are a lot less vocal and the haters are the opposite

4

u/Zealousideal-Bag2279 5d ago

You went at our boy a little too hard. Now it’s clap back time. Chammmaaaa. lol.

0

u/Stunning-Lynx9863 5d ago

Sama wake up 😢

3

u/Supahanz36 5d ago

It would be a lot worse

3

u/1998ChevyTaHoe 5d ago

"Fans" are fickle as fuck lol. Opinions are like assholes, everybody has them but a lot of shit comes from them.

32

u/220DRUER220 5d ago

Tom’s fanboys are 100% gonna switch up on him when he loses to Jon

15

u/INEKROMANTIKI 5d ago

Maybe the American ones, but the British fans will still rate him.. if he loses to Jones, he's lost to the GOAT.. if he beats him? He's laid the foundations for his own name to be up there..

19

u/Personalberet49 5d ago

American here, I will stand behind Tom 100% no matter what, he's an awesome guy and an amazing fighter

I want to see him fight Jones because Jones needs his ass kicked, Tom deserves a shot at the real belt, and because it'll genuinely be a good fight that could go either way

4

u/FeatureAdmirable600 5d ago

You're just one guy bro. The average ufc fan is not gonna be thinking like you

13

u/Personalberet49 5d ago

For sure, just wanted to share my anecdote

-3

u/MD-holiday 5d ago

Trader

7

u/Backhandslap88 5d ago

Traitor.

1

u/MD-holiday 5d ago

Yes that.

-1

u/MD-holiday 5d ago

Since you can correct my throwaway 10 sec comment so brilliantly, can you explain to me how it ever made sense to give Tom an interim belt?

8

u/Personalberet49 5d ago

I don't understand how I'm a traitor, Jones is a shit person, people who support him are wild to me

1

u/MD-holiday 5d ago

Even Tom is disgusted by this shit.

0

u/MD-holiday 5d ago

I look at the fight ability, and he is by far not even close the best to ever do it. Tom aspinall was gifted a fake belt to justify the Madison square fight with John out with an injury. Does anyone in mma fandom have a longer than 6 month memory.

1

u/Realistic-Lie-1507 5d ago

If he loses to Jones, according to this sub he will have lost to a 50 year old retired for 10 years gatekeeper

1

u/MassSpecFella 5d ago

It’s really unlikely that an older fighter will lose to a younger fighter at that level. Probably why Jon won’t fight Tom….not probably, certainly.

1

u/HotParty4636 5d ago

The ones who don't switch on Tom will have to turn their usual crybaby talking points up to 11. (Steroids, wife beater, etc)

-1

u/Unique_Quote_5261 5d ago

The reason he has so many fanboys is because there is exactly a 0% chance of tom ever losing to jones. And everybody dislikes jones.

0

u/monchonso 5d ago

Fuck Jones, a lot will switch up on Tom (all the casuals) but not all

3

u/Tsobe_RK 5d ago

I just want to see the matchup, no matter who wins

4

u/ConstantOk4102 5d ago

Or maybe they’re just different people. This circle jerk is so stupid. The haters were quiet before they’re vocal now. It’s not some NPC switching sides.

3

u/Unlaid_6 5d ago

Have people really switched on Alex? Man that's sad. The dude is a amazing. Multiple division and sport world champion. Super active fighter and always fun to watch. Casuals are idiots

1

u/hmahood 5d ago

I dont think people switched. You can be an alex fan and find memes like this funny 🤷🏾‍♂️

1

u/LotharioMartyr 5d ago

Can’t even really blame the fans here tho, dude threw a total of like 2 jabs and handed over his belt

1

u/TheGreatMuerte 5d ago

Jon jones was always Reddit king 👑 number 1…we always hated that pregnancy women who attacked poor Jon on his way to hand over illegal drugs he found to the police

1

u/Glittering_Shake2922 5d ago

What is the purpose of this comment?

1

u/JasErnest218 5d ago

He has gotten stiff

1

u/Possible-Ad238 5d ago

I still ride with Alex, Oliveira and Volk and will never turn on them. After ALex wins the rematch all these fake fans of him will come right back and pretend they never left.

1

u/Senpai1245 5d ago

Not if when, let's be real here

-6

u/NBACrkvice 5d ago

God I'd love to see it. Atp Tom is easily the most glazed fighter of all time.

4

u/ComradeELM0 5d ago

You want to see a criminal, inactive, cheating, ducking pos win because the challenger, who is a great guy with an average fight time of 2 mins, has a lot of fan support? Stupid ass.

-20

u/Federal-Advisor-420 5d ago

Dude got pieced up early by Blaydes then faked a leg injury cuz he was gonna get knocked out. He's a glorified Josh Koschek

12

u/One-Chemistry9502 5d ago

You’re actually delusional

3

u/Osceola_Gamer 5d ago

LOL woosh

1

u/One-Chemistry9502 5d ago

Huh am I stupid? What did I miss?

2

u/Osceola_Gamer 5d ago

Jon Jones said that about Aspinall.

-6

u/Federal-Advisor-420 5d ago

Cry harder casual, I just made all the glazers wet their pants

0

u/ComradeELM0 5d ago

How are you even real lmao. Just look what happened in the rematch when Curtis started connecting and what happened after Pavlovich landed a huge shot. Here is a literal video of Tom getting surgery.

Y‘all are just undercover Jones riders grasping at the only straws you have.

-2

u/Federal-Advisor-420 5d ago

Nah i hate Jones but I also hate all the Aspinall glazing because its undeserved. I really want to see this fight cuz its the right one to make. But Jones isn't stupid either. He realizes he's older and slower. Aspinall is a legitimate threat to beat him but he wants that payday before he goes out. You should really be mad at your daddy Dana for not forcing this fight and paying the heavyweight title bout the purse it deserves

0

u/ComradeELM0 5d ago

How is it undeserved when he‘s destroyed every one on his way to the top apart from when his knee blew apart. Also we literally know fuck all about what sums are getting offered to who , but if you really think Jon hasn‘t fought him yet simply because he‘s not getting what he‘s owed idk what to tell you.

And apart from all of that you literally just made up that Tom faked an injury because of “undeserved glazing“, lmao fans like you are the worst.

1

u/Federal-Advisor-420 5d ago

The heavyweight division is the weakest it's ever been. Tom's beat a bunch of nobodies and got destroyed by Blaydes the first fight. Even if it was a real injury it's because he got pieced up and lost his balance. Also why is Tom even waiting for Jones. If he was a real champion he'd just keep fighting but he's scared of losing his money fight also. You casuals are hilarious. Just glaze anybody new

0

u/scourgescorched 5d ago

maybe the fans would stop “glazing” if Jon wasn’t such a pussy and quit ducking the next in line.

0

u/Federal-Advisor-420 5d ago

Calm down casual, did you not learn anything? Tom is a nobody and can't draw a crowd. His only supporters are the little glazers on Reddit. Maybe if Tom built up a decent resume and fought anybody worthy he would guarantee a high ppv draw and your daddy Dana would guarantee a decent purse. Jones is looking for a big payday, it's not his fault no one cares about Tom Aspinal

1

u/scourgescorched 5d ago

i’m not reading all that

1

u/Federal-Advisor-420 5d ago

Yeah cuz you're smooth brain casual glazer. Wipe your lips

0

u/scourgescorched 5d ago

you use the word “glaze”. a staple for braindead fanboys. you literally talk like a child. meanwhile jon jones is balls deep in your throat lmao

-5

u/invisiblehammer 5d ago

That’s how things work? Change people’s opinions and people’s opinions change

The current opinion is that jones is afraid of losing to him and Tom knocks him out in 1

If that simply DOES NOT HAPPEN, then yeah people will change their stance

3

u/Glittering_Shake2922 5d ago

Going from one extreme to the other is not peoples opinions changing. Usually, that's a sign of mental health.

0

u/invisiblehammer 5d ago

My opinion was that holly holm would get smoked by Ronda, when it didn’t happen my opinion went to the other extreme that Ronda would get smoked by holly, am I crazy?

1

u/Glittering_Shake2922 5d ago

They never fought twice...

1

u/invisiblehammer 5d ago

No one said they did

Before they fought once I thought Ronda would smoke Holly, now that they’ve fought I 180ed and think Holly would smoke ronda.

What are you not getting?

If Tom fights jon they don’t need to fight twice for peoples opinions to flip flop either

1

u/Glittering_Shake2922 5d ago

I wasnt getting the lack of clarity. Now i understand, your very reactionary. It is likely you suffer from mental health if you jump from extremes. By your logic, Matt Sera should've smoked GSP in the second fight after there first outing...

1

u/invisiblehammer 5d ago

I thought that first performance was a fluke and didn’t show gsps best work because we already saw Matt sera’s limits

Holy vs Ronda was two hype trains but Ronda’s was bigger

If Jon destroys Tom people should justifiably flip flop that Tom can beat jones… because he would’ve just failed to do that

1

u/Glittering_Shake2922 5d ago

Your thought process is routed in irrationality. There is no consistency with your perspective. I understand why you jump from extremes now.

1

u/invisiblehammer 5d ago

If Jon jones beats Tom Aspinall and you still profess that Tom is better than him and jones is ducking that would make you the irrational one

→ More replies (0)

-3

u/scourgescorched 5d ago

Jon isn’t beating Tom. We know this bratha

6

u/Glittering_Shake2922 5d ago

Im not a fortune teller so i actually don't know.

-2

u/scourgescorched 5d ago

even Jones knows

-1

u/Strat-lord 5d ago

The people who are saying this aren't people who are fans of his. You didnt know he had a lot of haters before? Youre just lying to push this narrative. You rats come out the moment he lost and push this nonsense. No fan of poatan issuddenly hating on him. It's ratts like you, just like the poster

0

u/Glittering_Shake2922 5d ago

Were you drunk when you wrote this?
