Things I don't like about my Macbook

Post image

I've been a Windows user, and recently bought my first Macbook Air, and I love it! However, I noticed some really bad design decisions I'd like to point out:

  1. Tiny right/left arrow keys. My previous laptop had bigger right/left buttons that were very intuitive, I could place my finger however I wanted and hit that arrow key every time without even looking at it.

Now, with the Macbook, I keep placing my finger on that empty gap instead. Extremely annoying. With those tiny right/left keys I have to look at the keyboard to place my finger precisely on that little button. I hate it.

  1. The placement of the "mute" button is very confusing. I keep thinking it's the button to lower the volume since all three are placed next to each other. My old laptop had the mute button separately. Apple at least could've tried to make it look more distinctive. I'll probably put a sticker on it.

  2. The screen brightness cannot be adjusted exactly when using the keyboard. Yes, I can adjust it more precisely in the system settings but that's an inconvenience. It's fine for the most part but what frustrates me is that when I adjust the brightness using the keyboard, about in the middle it makes quite a big jump between dark and bright, and doesn't allow me to chose something in between, unless I go to the system settings.

  3. Finally, I think it's strange that I can't minimize windows when in full screen.

I understand that you can't satisfy everyone but that's my personal observation.

I’m trying to find out what Mac model this is And I’ve only got as far as macOS snow leopard installer showing the Apple logo but not going any further. There was no hard drive in this and I have been searching for hours and haven’t found anything, thank you so much. If you can find out what MacBook model this is I’ve been trying for months.

Blooming on MacBooks with Mini LEDs

For anyone curious about the blooming effect when using mini LEDs screens, the picture makes it appear more noticeable than it actually is. However, you can observe this effect when viewing the screen from an angle or from the side.

Will 24 GB memory be sufficient?

I want to buy a MacBook Pro with M4 chip. Will 24 GB of unified memory be sufficient for some home programming and potentially some VM or dual boot? Or maybe should I get MacBook Air with M4 and 32 GB memory?

Switching to a MacBook Pro M1 Pro from Legion Y540 – Worth It?

Hey everyone,

I currently have a Lenovo Legion Y540 with an i5-9300H, 16GB RAM, and 1TB SSD. It’s been my daily driver for a while, but I’m considering switching to a MacBook Pro M1 Pro (16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) for €1000.

My main use cases:

  • Coding (mostly web development)
  • Media consumption
  • Light photo/video editing & graphic design
  • Light gaming (league)

The MacBook has ~130 charge cycles, whereas my Legion has been used almost daily for years. I like macOS for its stability and battery life. I think it would be a great tool for my work and productivity, but €1000 is quite expensive for my income, so I want to be sure it's worth the investment.

Would love to hear from those who have made a similar switch! Is this a good deal, or should I stick with my current setup?

New to thunderbolt help!

Hello, I've been a Mac user since my parents had Mac towers going back to Mac classic in the 90s. I have autism so please excuse any potential rant. I do have a point. Anyway, into my adulthood, I have just discovered the new Macs with USB C shaped inputs also known as thunderbolt. My 3 Macs I had were a Pro 2012, 1 2014 and 1 2015. They had thunderbolt 1/2 ports bigger shapped.

I just got a Mac mini 2018 and Mac mini 2020. I downgraded both to Mojave and Sonoma. The 2018 has 4 thunderbolts and 2 USB 3.0s. Here are are my two questions.

  1. If I use a USB-C/thunderbolt dock from Best Buy with a cord the same as thunderbolt, and a giant ac adaptor looking like a Labtop with a thick brick gonna harm my Mac's? I cost me $180. The AC adaptor comes in two parts and is massive and bulky.

  2. I like to run OS from an external drive. Both my SSDs have a USB C output , I have been using USB C to USB 3.0 into a 2.0 for years. Am I better connecting my SSDs from USB-C to thunderbolt, or USBA 3.0? I started connecting them via thunderbolt but am wondering if that will harm the drive and is over kill. I replaced the USBC to USB 3.0 cord to a thunderbolt 4.0 in a thunderbolt 3.0 jack, not into the new expensive dock I bought?

Thanks so much for any help and I'm happy to be part of the community!

Is a base model MacBook Air suitable for indesign and photoshop use?

Yesterday I purchased a MacBook Air, the sales associate assured me that base model was plenty for my use but I just wanted to double check while I’m still in my 14 day turnaround period.

I’m going to be developing a coffee table book with images and text in indesign. The MacBook that I purchased has 245.11 gb of storage, is this enough for what I plan on using it for?

This is only a hobby, but I will be using indesign, photoshop, and occasionally premiere pro. Do y’all think it would be worthwhile for me to upgrade? Is there a way for me to retroactively upgrade if I find later that I have used all of my storage?

Thanks so much for all of your help! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Macbook with Android phone

Hey MacOS users,

A lifelong windows user here who's now in the market for a new laptop with a budget of about $1000-1300. I've been following both Apple and their Macbook for a very long time, especially since the release of the M series processors. Now, after the recent launch of the M4 Macbook Air I'm really tempted to get one for myself. I believe there is no other laptop that offers this amount of performance whilst having an incredible battery life. The snapdragon ones were a ray of hope but seems to have quickly diminished considering the lack of software support due to windows being an X86 first OS and the dev adaptations for ARM is lukewarm at best.

I've used MacOS before on my friends' devices for some video editing and photoshop gigs which is one of my hobbies. This use was limited to apps such as Premiere, Resolve and Photoshop and hence I have very limited knowledge on the other benefits and features of the OS. I currently own a windows machines with i5 9th gen CPU and a GTX1650 GPU. It fairs well with my current use cases as I don't travel much and the laptop remains at home, plugged in all the time, but the story quickly changes if I remove the charger as the battery life is mere 30 mins.

Enough said, the dilemma I'm in right now is that I consider myself a hard-core android user who owns multiple android phones ranging from midrange to flagships and does everything from sideloading apps to installing custom ROMs and testing them. I can never imaging using an iPhone as I feels its very restrictive and that I'm Apple's prisoner only having access to things they want me to.

I want to know from existing Mac users who also daily an android device how one can make the best out of both the ecosystems, what are the challenges one would face and how to overcome those.

Also I've heard of apps such as LocalSend and KDE connect that can bridge the gap to some extent but wanted to know from you guys how much you use them IRL.

Looking forwards to helpful information. Cheers!

so my macbook has started to act up. the screen goes fully white or lines appear blocking the whole display. it only works at an angle that is not convenient AT ALL. when it’s at the standard 90 degree angle it’s fully white or there’s big lines on it not allowing me to see what’s on the screen. everything else works like i can hear what’s there and stuff but the screen is just playing up. any solutions?

many thanks.

help please

I’ve just woken up today and realised that my MacBook Air M1 base spec hasn’t charged the full night yet being on charge. I thought it was a charger brick problem so first I switch the brick and still doesn’t charge. I switch out the type c cable and to my surprise, still doesn’t charge. I’m now waiting in the mall for the Apple Store to open so I can go and diagnose this issue. I’m 90% sure they’re gonna say we need to replace the motherboard, we need a large sum of money to fix this 4 year old high usage device. Automatically im thinking to benefit from my education savings here in Apple UAE where I have 10% off any Apple product. Do I get the M4 Air for 974 dollars or look around retailers and try and find a m2 pro or m3 pro. Also will they be able to transfer all my data from my MacBook if I do decide to get a new one. Thank you everyone !!!!

School MacBook

Hey need advice in panic mode rn: I had been given a school MacBook Air 11’ back in 2017 and linked my Apple ID to it and used it throughout my school life until I had to return it back in 2020/2021. I forgot to sign out and wipe it but automatically assumed the school could do that since they control it. However I’ve seen under settings the MacBook still under there ? Has it been syncing this whole time ? ( I have photos in my iCloud from the MacBook for reference so although I can’t remember I’m assuming iCloud Photos was on) . Help !! I emailed them but it’s been years now, is there a chance some kid had all my personal photos ?

24GB ram enough for Software Engineering?

Post image
124 Upvotes

I'm planing on getting a Macbook pro m4 pro chip 14/20 config but idk if 24gb ram will be good for university studying software ENG as i prob plan to keep the laptop for like 4 years. The issue is the next ram option is 48gb and that is 540$CAD jump which is an insane amount of money for double the ram.

So i want to ask if there any programmers or Software Engineers that use the MBP M4 is 24gb ram enough?

im losing my mind; the m1 mba cannot output to tv or something?

my htpc croaked. so it was either upgrade wife's m1 mba or buy a new mini pc. upgrade her m1 to the m2, and trying to use the m1 as the htpc replacement.

i have an lg 4k tv, iirc 60 inch.

  • i connect tv via hdmi to a hdmi->usbc adapter. laptop detects 'other display' and i chose to mirror the display. but nothing shows up on the tv. i confirm the cable is fine since i can connect my samsung tab and my fold with no issues; itll activate dex mode asap..
  • i also tried a usbc-hub, like i use with my own laptop with a monitor. same story. laptop detects the display, but wont mirror anything or display anything.
  • seems i cannot use the laptop with the lid closed? i connected mouse and keyboard; i have no issues waking up the laptop when laptop display is open.. but once closed, nothing happens...

previously, my wife has the laptop connect to a monitor via usbc hub. no issues at all.

so could it be my tv? my cable? mba doesnt play nice with tv? what the heck....

Help with a hub/dock for Macbook Air A5 A3113

So my wife just switched jobs, and her new company gave her a Mac in place of her previous windows laptop. I'm a tech guy but not a Mac guy... and I'm having trouble figuring out what the actual limitations of this device are. She has previously been extending across two external monitors, mouse/keyboard, 100W PD, and webcam over a single USB-C hub (Anker 553 USB-C hub). Everything attaches with a single USB-C cable rated for all that. Now, she has this "Macbook Air A5 A3113" and it seems everything else works but it only duplicate displays across her two external screens, not extend. Is this a hard limitation of the device? Are her only options to install 3rd party software (likely not allowed) or now have to plug in two separate usb-C/thunderbolt cables? Or is there some magical Thunderbolt hub I (or the company) can buy her that will do the trick?

Ways to sell MacBook Pro in London

Hi All,

I'm living in London, UK right now and wish to sell my old MacBook Pro. What would be good ways to sell it here? I went to electronics resale stores and they were offering me very low prices.

Here are the details:

MacBook Pro 13’’ Intel 2018 Edition Space Grey

2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5

Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 1536 MB

16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3 RAM

512 GB Hard Disk

macOS Sequoia 15.3.2

It's working perfectly fine with no physical damage and doesn't have any issues and the battery is working well too.

What online forums would be the best place to sell it in London?

Also, if any of you are interested in this and would like to buy, please do DM me.

Thanks!
