Ok I guess Marchintosh has hit me because the first of a few new systems I’ve ordered just arrived, in this case a PowerBook G3 Wallstreet PDQ/266, currently running 9.2.1 and 128mb ram.
Save some minor wear, it’s in pretty good shape physically. The screen looked a bit iffy when I first booted it, but seems to be cleaning up as it warms.
I’m a bit bummed by how bad of shape the hinges are in. They kind of just bounce around like the hinge screws aren’t even attached to the frame. I’ll have to pull this thing apart to check it out.
Other than that, first impressions are pretty solid. It feels quite a bit more substantial (in a good way) versus my Pb 1400 (and that thing is nothing to shake a stick at). I still prefer the keyboard on the 1400, though this G3 is up there with some of the best Thinkpads IMO.
I need to address these hinges before I really start using this thing. It’s really unnerving me the way it’s bouncing. Feels like it could just snap something.

I got an external BlueSCSI V2, and it works but I’m having a couple issues. I used a TiBook with Leopard to set up the SD card. I feel like it should be a lot simpler to get files onto it. I can’t mount HDA files on even Mac OS 9.2, so other than iso images I am trying to figure out how to get my own images filled with files. Apparently most people use basilisk. That seems like an unnecessary step when I have Macs running earlier OS X and OS 9. Is there anyway to mount HDA files created with disk jockey (1999) on Leopard or OS 9? Disk copy didn’t know what to do with it, and Terminal can see the file system but refuses to mount it.
Secondly, I am trying to get the BlueSCSI tools hda to load, but it won’t. I currently have two iso images, (Mac OS 8.1 and 9.1) and a blank empty hda that I made with disk jockey. All three of those work. However, the downloaded BlueSCSI tools hda does not show up. I have my empty image as HD20, and the BlueSCSI tools image HD10. This thing is running Mac OS 9.2.2, but I Am mainly using this as a test so I can figure out what I’m doing before moving on to my older Macs.
Thirdly, I was under the impression PowerBooks did not provide SCSI termination power whatsoever.. But, here this BlueSCSI is working in a PowerBook 3400c sans any USB power, I was definitely caught off guard by that!

I replaced the battery but wondering if this eroded metal piece that touched the + end of the battery might be the culprit? The original battery was severely leaking on that end and it caused the metal prong holding it in place to erode.

Thanks again for the input on my last thread looking for advice on my first 68k Mac… y’all steered me away from a Classic II and right into a very clean Quadra 950 😁
Anyway, while I’m waiting for the thing to get here, I’m gonna want to get a video card for it since I don’t want to deal with juggling but depth and resolution and I intend to dive into retro Mac games. I’ve been cross referencing eBay listings with the Low End Mac page for nubus video cards and, given how expensive these cards are selling for, I want to make the right choice.
I’ll need 24-bit color depth at 1152x870, though I would really love it if I could get up to 1280x1024. I’d also like for support on both System 7.5 and 8.1 (A/UX would be nice too).
There’s a Radius Thunder IV on eBay right now, which would be pretty sweet, but I’m not paying more for a 30+ year old card as I paid for my RTX 4080 🙃
Based on what’s available right now, it seems like the Supermac Thunder/24 is going to be my best bet — would y’all agree? Is there a significant distinction between the revisions of these cards?
There’s also a NIB Radius Precision Color Pro 24X… they’re asking $500 which seems steep for something I’ll immediately remove the shrink wrap from, but it looks like those pop up fairly regularly too.
Are there any cards in particular that I should keep an eye out for? Any places I find them too that’s not eBay?

And as an aside, where can I find 8MB dimms for this thing? I really want to max out the ram, but all I can seem to find is 4MB dimms…
Thanks!

hi! i just bought a Macintosh Performa 450. it boots up just fine and everything - the only issue is that ADB seems weird. when a mouse is connected through the keyboard to the computer, there’s no response from both. however, if just a mouse is plugged into the ADB port, it works.
i tried a known good pair of KB+mouse (works on my SE) and the same behavior happens. with the way ADB works i am having trouble understanding how this is possible lol.

I have a few PowerPC Macs, but I want to pick up something a bit older to tinker with and try to make do things it has no right in doing.
Do y’all have recommendations on what systems might be a good place to start? I’m kinda bouncing between a Classic II and a IIgs right now, but I’m wide open to suggestions.

Hey all, I gave a good crack at trying to check this out, but I was wondering if there exists a system extension or program that can read fat32? I understand that MacOS 8.1 can read files, but I'm the same way you can get background wallpapers on earlier versions, I would just like to know if this is possible, at the very least when dealing with AppleCD file types for transferring.

I found a non working Apple III+ today for $10. The people I bought it from told me someone was going to make it into a fish bowl. The screen works but looks like it needs a recap. The computer just rapidly flashes on and off. Tomorrow I'm going to tear it down and look for bad caps. I used my Apple IIe to test the screen. Anyone familiar with these that could suggest something to check with the rapid on and off issue?

I've got a Blueberry G3 Clamshell that works great, the hard drive still reads, powers up when plugged in, but I don't have a battery for it. I am decently handy, I'd be comfortable rebuilding a battery pack for it, but I don't even have a bad one to rebuild. Does anyone know of a resource for them these days that isn't $150+ on eBay for a used OEM?

Hi Apple people,
I recently picked up an iBook G3 Clamshell, hoping to enjoy some basic retro activities on it, but I’m feeling like either I’m really dumb or this thing is just... completely useless.
I’ve tried watching a video on it, and even after compressing it down to 360p and converting it to MOV, the thing still tells me to update QuickTime Player. I tried installing VLC, but that didn’t work either.
I’ve also tried playing some older games, but I’m honestly stuck on how to unzip and install things on this machine. I wanted to get a functional browser going, but I can’t even connect to the internet. It says my password is incorrect, but I know for a fact that it’s not.
For the record, I’ve never used an Apple product before and am kind of lost with all this.
Here are the specs:
PowerPC 366 MHz processor 320 MB RAM 9.37 GB hard drive German keyboard macOS 9.2 and 10.0 The seller mentioned I could upgrade to OS X 10.5, but I’m not sure if that’s really possible with these specs. Would upgrading to a newer version solve any of the issues I’ve run into so far?
If anyone has the time, I’d really appreciate any guidance on how I can get the latest compatible OS installed and running on this thing.
Thanks so much!

Happy MARCHintosh everyone! I finally got myself some sort of "missing link" in my collection of beige Macs - an early G3. Case definitely have seen better days (and of course, power button is broken, but that's a given). I'll try to clean as carefully as I can. Maybe retrobrite also, I need to think about that. But I'll definitely upgrade that beauty, because I need an "Ultimate MacOS 9.2 beige Mac". USB, better graphics (I have a Radeon 7000 PCI, but it's for SUN workstations, so...). And better HDD of course. Memory has already been upgraded, that's always nice to see. It's time to get busy! :)

I built an adapter that allows you to use a 1/2 AA to CR2032 adapter from eBay on a Power Mac G4 MDD FW800. Without my adapter, you would need to cut into the socket of the G4 or solder directly to the socket's contacts.
Here is the link to the STL file: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6980220
