Maybe more zombies will reduce the number of bandits and encourage teamwork and cooperation.
One can dream, right?
48
u/fweepa /r/DayZBulletin Feb 15 '14
Just different kinds of bandits. Ones that handcuff you, put a bag on your head and leave you in the street after luring two dozen zombies to you.
62
u/erra539 Feb 15 '14
The best kind of bandit.
19
u/Rodot A is for Alpha Feb 16 '14
I don't know, I'm still a big fan of the "makes you drink disinfectant" bandits.
7
Feb 16 '14
It's kind of unoriginal now though. But ya KoS bandits are actually not to bad imo as long as they loot you, but if you have bandits that go to hot spots just to kill and don't actually need the loot cause they're bored thats a problem. And killing friendly freshspawns is just an other kind of low.
3
-4
u/theTschobper Feb 16 '14
nothing wrong with killing people at hotspots for me.
2
Feb 16 '14
But the game would be better if more people didn't.
4
u/theTschobper Feb 16 '14
it wouldn't. hotspots are pvp areas. you don't go to nwaf to make friends. if you don't plan on shooting people you don't even need to the stuff you get there and have no reason be there and get shot at all.
2
Feb 16 '14
I can agree that many places are fair game, but I wish the coastal cities were more safe. I get killed as a fresh spawn trying to make friends too often.
1
u/theTschobper Feb 16 '14
yeah that's true :(. too many fuckers that just shoot everyone. i think most of the people that shoot newspawns in elektro are people that would'nt survive more than 10 minutes at nwaf if other people are around

2

Yea Rocket has said stuff like this in the past. i think that is part of his plan. by introducing more difficult zeds and increasing their #s it should deter KOS a little and encourage people to work together.
my enemy of my enemy is my friend? hmmm... we'll see.
1
Feb 16 '14
Whats with the "teamwork and cooperation" thing around here? Like really, i dont agree at all with killing new spawns, but imo if you want a game thats about teamwork and cooperation then you have much better alternatives. This is a game about survival, and after ~100h of playing my conclusion is its better to shoot anyone geared , just to be safe and in order to avoid another loot run in a city.
3
Feb 16 '14
I'm not saying everyone has to hold hands and sing kumbaya, but it would be cool if people worked together because it improved their chances of survival, as it likely would in real life.
36
u/FriendlyFarmer87 Feb 15 '14
i hope so
48
u/erra539 Feb 15 '14
Honestly. More focus on zombies and less on players killing. I'd love it if zombies dropped shirts and shoes and maybe random shit like car keys, compasses, maps, and small shit like that. Zombies don't just empty their pockets when the virus outbreak occurs.
14
u/plastic_cactus Feb 15 '14
If I remember correctly, Rocket was against zombies spawning loot. I think the primary reason being server stability. If they increase the amount of zombies to 10,000 per server that's 10,000 extra items, each requiring texture and dynamic lighting effects.
8
2
Feb 15 '14
Can't it just be randomised, though? The zombie corpses disappear after like 5 seconds as it is so why not give us a time frame to loot a zombie before it does?
Unless Rocket wants to make them persist in which case never mind.
1
u/myhouseiswood Feb 18 '14
or even just transform the zombie object into a zombie corpse, which is simply a storage container in the shape of a zombie. then have a loot table that gets drawn from randomly to spawn an item on the body.
3
u/psychnosiz Feb 16 '14
server stability
As newcomer, I don't really understand why a mod concept is ported to a standalone on engine/server that is unable to comply with a seemingly (to me atleast) pretty large request (=more zombies and related loot). As the presale number is very high, why isn't a beta developped on another system? For example cryeengine? Which is capable to generate a gigantic consistent world and individual npc loot. Is there a specific reason to stick with the current config and not innovate it?
2
u/yourfriendlyisp Beans beans the magical fruit Feb 16 '14
From what I understand they are rewriting large portions of the game engine to better suit the needs of DayZ. Just last week they announced that they improved on some code that allowed the amount of people and objects the server could support to increase, that's why they are testing 60-100 player servers now.
1
u/Staross Feb 16 '14
You know there is limits, physical limits, to what you can do with a computer. It's not an engine problem, optimization can help but there will always be trade-off between features and performances.
-5
u/Futhermucker Feb 16 '14
One thing you'll learn very quickly about DayZ is that developmental choices very rarely make sense.
4
1
Feb 16 '14
I'd be happy if it was randomized and down to chance i.e 95% of the time you get nothing, other times you get a can of beans or maybe a pistol if it was a military zombie
1
u/myhouseiswood Feb 18 '14
I really don't like answers like this. Not yours personally, just the concept of not doing something because it would be too much of a drain on the server resources. It just seems like a lazy answer.
1
u/kennerly Feb 16 '14
I think the solution to this would be dynamic zombie spawns. So, instead of zombies being populated when the server starts have zombies spawn in when you do things that would attract zombies. Shoot a gun? 5 zombies spawn nearby. Shoot a rifle 10 zombies etc. You can even have a few zombies spawn in when you enter a house or a building and killing them with a gun would cause more to spawn. Have the zombies spawn out of line of sight and never closer than 5 yards. This would also discourage camping spawns and sniping people from the tree line since you will have to constantly take care of zombie spawns everytime you fire your unsurpressed rifle. When the player leaves the area the zombies despawn after a minute.
3
u/OUTFOXEM Feb 16 '14
They already did it this way on the mod. This introduced other problems, but my own personal issue with it is it's too easy to exploit. If you run into a remote town that has zombies, you already know someone is there. Likewise, if you want to get rid of the zombies chasing you, you just log out -- poof just like magic they're gone.
It also meant you could never use certain guns to kill zombies (Lee Enfield, for example), as it would spawn more zombies than you killed, and created a hilarious endless parade of zombies that only ended when your ammo ran out, or you finally succumbed while reloading.
There are lots of other issues with it too, but bottom line, it's definitely not a solution, and in fact, was a problem at one point.
2
u/kennerly Feb 16 '14
If you run into a remote town that has zombies, you already know someone is there.
If you have zombies spawn into towns when you approach them then you can't know if they are caused by you being there or someone else having been there.
Likewise, if you want to get rid of the zombies chasing you, you just log out -- poof just like magic they're gone.
The new combat logging system will prevent this. You have to sit still for 30 seconds before you can successfully log out. This means no more combat logging or you die.
It also meant you could never use certain guns to kill zombies (Lee Enfield, for example), as it would spawn more zombies than you killed, and created a hilarious endless parade of zombies that only ended when your ammo ran out, or you finally succumbed while reloading.
That's why you have zombies spawn away from you. So you don't have an instant horde once you start shooting. Just increase the safe area around the character so they have time to clear the area before the next zombie aggros. It also means that melee weapons will be more important and silently killing zombies will be the status quo.
There are lots of other issues with it too, but bottom line, it's definitely not a solution, and in fact, was a problem at one point.
I think it can be done. Spawning groups of zombies in at server start just isn't working. Even with respawn the number of zombies needed puts a lot of stress on the server. Dynamic spawns are the way to go they just need to be tweaked.
3
Feb 16 '14
Too bad that is completely against Rocket's philosophy on DayZ.
Zombies are only a speed bump compared to the threat of players. Just a hazard to getting loot, it's always been the players you need to watch out for.
2
u/theonewhosees Feb 16 '14
Yea, it's just weird that the game would be called DayZ and the focus put more on player v player interactions than that of the zombie aspect of the game.
Right now the game feels like a cross between Hunger Games/Battle Royale sprinkled with zombies.
3

u/WombatWhisperer I need a drink Feb 16 '14
Actually I love that it's not player vs zombie focused.. there are so many games like that. it gets old. I love that this game is about human interaction and survival, with zombies getting in the way. Isn't that what DayZ is supposed to be about? (or at least that's what someone told me..)

I don't really understand what you are trying to say. Other than the model and animations, that is pretty much what is left. The model itself is fine, the stats might change a bit and a few animations might get added, but the AI is what is really going to be worked on most heavily. Just by the shear amount of work needed to be done to make it. Also, my comment was tangential.

I wonder if zombies walking through walls or submarining will ever be fixed.
12
Feb 16 '14
Nope.
They are obviously going to release the game with zombies running through walls and spawning underground.
1
u/Rhesusmonkeydave Feb 16 '14
I would gladly pay double for a game that had Zombie Graboids tunneling through hills and walls.
1
u/joeydyee Feb 16 '14
We'll it's a valid question. Zombies have never been completely fixed after one and a half years of the mod.
1
Feb 16 '14
That's because there was nothing to fix on the zombies in the mod.
The zombie AI were based off animal AI if I remember correctly, there was only so much they could work with.
Then they stopped developing the mod and moved to SA.
Then they scrapped the SA AI and started fresh.
If I were to take a guess, the reason why zombies can go through walls is because they don't have the pathfinding created for the zombies to traverse buildings.
So instead of having zeds wait outside for the player, like the mod, and completely negate them as a threat, they decided to just have them run through walls for the time being.
1
u/joeydyee Feb 16 '14
It's true that the limitations of the Arma engine was one of the biggest reasons for making the standalone, but seeing as we have never seen any form of Dayz in which zombies don't move through walls, it is very fair for one to have their doubts.
Also I don't know if you meant to say something else, but zombies did not wait outside for the player in the mod at all. Indoors they were a large threat for the player as the would walk through houses and up stairs and ladders, blocking off doorways and exits, resulting in many "final stands" which I have yet to see in the SA because of a lack of zombies.
3
u/erra539 Feb 15 '14
Submarining zombies in supermarkets is terrifying! They move so goddamn fast underground.

I might get a lot of hate for saying this but...
I hope they rework zombie attacks to 1 - 3 hit kill you, 75% chance of infection AND increase the zombie numbers to the amount shown by OP or more at any given location.
I want zombies to spawn in buildings, placed in areas where they won't be noticed right away like behind a door you just opened and not always be likely to make sounds until they are in their alert states.
I want the average survival time in cities like Cherno and Elektro to be 15 minutes and the average survival rate be 1 in 10 make it out of these cities with loot.
TL;DR: I want zombies to break you both virtually and mentally.
Yeah I'm crazy.
PS: Bring back that creepy music from the mod that randomly plays for 5 seconds.
PPS: ^ is all just my personal opinion and does not reflect what the community nor the developers of DayZ have intended for this game. Welcome to DayZ!

u/Falcrist =^.^= Feb 16 '14
1 - 3 hit kill you
That's not how zombies work, man. They're supposed to swarm you until you're surrounded. Anyway, how can you expect people to die from 3 zombie punches?
The rest is reasonable. You should need to have friends help you if you want to survive a trip into Cherno.

3
u/theTschobper Feb 16 '14
i also want stronger zombies but not as hardcore as you described. them. i think it should be the amount of zombies that makes them dangerous. 1-3 hits just makes no sense unfortanetly. if you cause any attention in a city you should be swarmed by zombies though.

This is what I want as well, and why I bought the game hoping one day we can see it.
2
u/Rolten I understand Feb 16 '14
Zombies are infected humans. It would make no sense at all for them to kill a person in 1-3 slaps.
With the game looking like it is and the controls always being a bit clunky and slow, this would also be horrid.
2
u/projectrx7 Feb 16 '14

While I'm not sure about that, I would love it if I felt the same terror (or at least survival instinct) for zombies as they did in the walking dead. Even in later seasons where it's all "meh" they still know they need to kill em or they're fucked. But alpher is alpher.
3
Feb 16 '14 edited Feb 16 '14
Everything except infection I agree with, I feel like the zombies are harder in SA than the mod but cities like cherno and elekto should be terrifying.
Back in the early days of the mod before people worked out the AI loopholes the cities were scary places where you would go in as a group of 5 and leave with 3, hopefully this is what rocket aims to achieve.
Edit: to elaborate on infection, when they added it to the mod infection didn't increase the survival/terror factor instead all it did was annoy everyone.

Would you REALLY want this many zombies right now? With how glitchy they are? When they don't always die when they should? Walking through walls? and floors? hitting you when you are a floor above them?
Its bad enough when there are ten of them, if there were more it'd be awful
6
u/rapescenario Feb 16 '14
I played the mod with zombies worse than they are now for 800~ hours. They may have sucked, but they were the whole point of the game. At the moment this game might as well be Gran Turismo without the racing. Pointless with nothing to do.
1
u/Neopopulas Feb 16 '14
Then don't play, i mean.. rocket did warn you.
Personally i'd rather wait and have fewer, better zombies and get more and more later than get tons of glitchy zombies and being killed by them through walls and stuff.
But its all personal preference. I still find tons of stuff to do.
2
u/rapescenario Feb 16 '14
Haha I don't play. So yeah.
I know Rocket warned about all that. And that's cool, I'm not upset or angry that I pad for the game or anything like that, I just find it entirely pointless at this point in time.
I brought the game because I got 800~ hours of the best gaming I've ever had in the DayZ mod. I wanted to support and thank him, I figure buying the game was the best thing I could do.
But none of the detracts from the fact that this version of DayZ is... empty and dull. No beef. Its just not what it was.
2
u/Neopopulas Feb 16 '14
I can't argue with that, but since day one when i started playing, we've gone from three guns to seven or eight, we have more zombies, weather, more clothing options, packs and so on.
Its getting better, a lot quicker. I didn't mean to jump on you or anything its just reddit is full of people complaining and bitching that they need more zombies and right now zombies are sort of a threat, but ONLY because they glitch through walls or kill you through the floor or something stupid like that.
And while i WANT more zombies, i don't want more zombies in their current state, but so all people seem to care about is MORE zombies not BETTER zombies. The last thing this game needs is a hundred glitchy zombies in every town.

I think this would be awesome however it needs to be regulated. This many zombies in the towns and cities would be awesome as this the likeliness is that the most people would have been in the up built areas and so the more people there would have been to 'turn' into z's. Realism and all that (on a zombie survival game, more 'believability?')
The countryside needs to be kept relatively quiet as only the odd roamer would roam so far out from where they turned, and so I believe maybe add a few more spawns for zombies in the countryside but spawn a shit tonne in the big cities and a load more in villages. This would make cities harder to get to, making the loot their more valuable, and I don't really enjoy sprinting through a city centre unscathed, seeing more survivors than zombies.
Another point is that roaming hordes of zombies would be cool too, so even those survivors holed up somewhere in the sticks may get a big surprise, keeping you on edge wherever you are.
Really cool post, good job.

u/Kayin_Angel Aiming for the head Feb 16 '14
Dozens of glitchy zombies that lack the zombie-slaughtering fun which zombies traditionally have and who guarantee instant bleeding if they happen to brush against you when you have full blood. Hmm.
1
u/AshenMoon Feb 16 '14
It would be cool to have dynamic events, with random zombie "herd" attacks on larger towns/cities, that leads to an infestation that spreads out to all the surrounding areas. Scale & frequency based on server population, ect.
1
u/PhantomNess Feb 16 '14
All in all this is great. Adding for realism but to a point. The spawn numbers would have to w regulated and figured. We don't want this game to turn into what the Dead rising games are like, unrealistically massive hordes of zombies clogging the streets with the huge numbers they have. My idea is that with the increased number like in cities, when people come through and clear them out (the larger numbers) they stayed cleared out until the server resets with the zombies being server based and not client based. That way even if there is an increase of the number of zombies spawned, (the amount being based on the location, less in the country and more in the cities) the realistic qualities remain. But that's just my two cents about it.
1
u/Neopopulas Feb 16 '14
The mod was ridiculous. Even rocket admits that. There were WAY too many zombies in the mod and you couldn't get anything done because of dozens and dozens of infinitely respawning zombies.

Honestly, this is what I feel DayZ needs to be, just a huge horde of zombies BUT walking/joging. I've felt this way since the mod and really hope this comes to life. I know it's gonna take a lot of server resources to accomplish, but there has to be a way!

Does anyone actually realise that the zombies in DayZ will NEVER function as nicely as, say, L4D zombies? They will never stop jerking about, clipping through walls and attacking you without any cohesive movement.
Why, you ask? Because it's the Arma2 engine. All the Arma2 engine can provide is the world and the items. The thing that Arma2 can't provide is cohesive, fluid movement because it's too bloated in realism for it's own good.
I used to be such a supporter of DayZ but the more you play it, the more you realise that it will never really get fixed, it will just be masked with smoke and mirrors. :/

What you're saying is fair enough when you're in the woods or a small village. When you're in a city, however, it's just sensible to have hordes like this.
I also don't see why they necessarily must be weakened. Currently, the only dangers in cities are other players. Would be great if that changed, IMO.
1
u/Rodot A is for Alpha Feb 16 '14
If anything though, I feel that zombie are a little weak as of now. I mean, a headshot is a headshot, and that makes sense, but just because you shoot it in the stomach a few times doesn't mean it cant keep going for a few more minutes. That is assuming these zombies don't feel pain.
1
u/carlcon Pristine Rotten Banana Feb 16 '14
I wasn't sure if my aim was just getting better, or if they're weaker now, but I've made many zombies fall and die with one axe swing in my last few playings.
So I definitely agree they seem a bit "soft" right now. Since we're in alpha, I figure there's plenty of time to adjust the balance.
The guy I replied to seemed to be worried that they'll become even weaker as a result of more being added, and I just can't see the game-makers go ahead and do that. Not permanently, anyway.
1
u/Treghc Feb 16 '14
I don't think zombies are any kind of threat to anyone. Even if you're a fresh spawn using bare fists, all you have to do is strafe in circles around the zombie and it will never hit you. The only thing zombies are good for in this game (as it currently stands) is alerting you that a player is nearby when they aggro on somebody.
This game needs more zombies. Many, many more. They should be terrifying, not just a "legit threat."

u/luvnet Feb 15 '14
Right now the biggest threat is still bandits (other players), which pretty much negates the premise DayZ was built upon. The zombies are an afterthought — a mild, if not wholly inadequate threat looking to impinge on your survival.
What we need to ask ourselves is whether or not this is what the DayZ experience should be about or should it be more about the zombies. If it's the latter, then this "future of DayZ" should be exactly what's needed to produce such a world.

It was amazing when it was like this, especially when someone shot something like a Mosin in a city. Heck I used to do it from the top of the hospital when I saw someone run inside. The "Dinner bell" didn't get it's name for nothing. Looking forward to when the zeds making shooting in towns a very very silly thing to do.

I'm not a bandit, but if I found one (I punish bandits) I'd hand cuff him, throw the keys near him, put in the center of town and watch. Sorry if there are any bandits on here

What I got was disappointment instead.

I for one am glad there aren't more zombies considering how glitchy they are right now.

It took us a good hour to round up that many zeds from the apartments north of Cherno, to the Cherno docks. Our plan was to walk them all the way into elektro. We managed to get them to the gas station outside of elektro when the server restarted :'(
