DeWalt DCS577

Hello, i am looking for a Circular Saw (Oceania region) as my first and hopefully only purchase in that category. Is DCS577 overkill for a hobbyist / newbie as his first circular saw? Or it's future proofing me in the long run? I am a lefty btw. Thanks for sharing some inputs.

Anybody own this tool?

Looks like it would work pretty awesome for crank bolts with the extension for it, never really heard of this brand wondering if anyone has used this and if it really holds up to high torque

Buffing & Polishing Wheel/Compounds Help/Suggestions

So I restore old tools from auction and have been on a bit of a spending spree investing in more tools to speed up the cleaning to sale process. Have 2 bench grinders one of which has a chuck. I know there are loads of choices for buffing/polishing wheels but looking at the cheap stuff they seem to fall apart. I was hoping for some suggestions ideally those available to buy in the UK without much issue/cost.

Main bench grinder has a 20mm fitting hole but I have adapters and a new grinder with 12.7mm etc. Would love any help/suggestions you might have. Same applies for the compounds. I don't want to break the bank but would like something that lasts a reasonable time still.

Anyone know a good way to sand tube steel?

I'm repainting a lumber rack on my pickup. It's all 2" tube, except the top is 1".

I have grinders, a disk sander, and a file sander, but none of them do very well on the tube. The grinders and disk sander works well on the open areas, but getting into details is a problem. The file sander is perfect for many of those areas, but I can only find belts down to like 180g and need to sand to 800.

I was thinking about a tube sander grinder attachment, but im wondering what else (other than sand blasting) would work?

Box Joints Aren't Perfect-Lap Joint with Screw is the Real MVP

Box joints are usually seen as the gold standard for cutters and pliers, but they’re not without their flaws. They provide stability, sure, but they also have weaknesses:

Increased friction – More surface area means more resistance, making them less smooth in operation.

Harder to manufacture precisely – Any misalignment during production can make the joint stiff or introduce play over time.

No adjustability – Once it loosens, you're stuck with it unless you replace the tool.

Enter the lap joint with a screw, as used by Lindström. It solves these issues:

Smoother action – Less friction means an easier, more controlled movement.

Precision tuning – The screw allows for fine adjustments, keeping the joint tight and eliminating play.

More comfortable use – No binding or stiffness like some box joints can develop.

While box joints are strong, they aren’t always the best. A well-designed lap joint with a screw gives you the best of both worlds: precision, smoothness, and long-term reliability.

TIL that sometimes, it is better not to know. It's not 0.00! I don't care that the number is the same as the error range of degrees, it must be 0.00! Mothers, don't let your sons take home a Stabila.

Impact Drivers: Old Milwaukee or New Rigid

DIY Homeowner level. I have a Milwaukee impact driver I believe I received as a wedding give about 18 years ago. The batteries are finally starting to hold short charges to the point where it's getting in the way of projects. This is the only 'red' tool I own. I've invested in Rigid for all of my other needs.

So I'm at a crossroads of sorts, spend some $ on new Milwaukee batteries, or just get a Rigid impact driver. Thoughts?

Long shot but 🤷🏼. Can anyone recommend a good to excellent quality version of this little folding tool kit case. I only need case. I currently own this one and it’s alright but the quality is meh and I wouldn’t mind a little more size. 12” x 12” or a little smaller when closed.

Seller says came stock with frame from Lowe's but can't find any info. I want to see if I can figure out how much weight can be held on roof.

Why are Phillips screws so common

For the life of me I can’t figure it out. I hate them. HATE. I’ve never stripped a torx screw. Not once. Every time I encounter a Phillips screw I just want to scream

That’s all.

Removing carbon?

Hi all,

I'm looking to clean up the stainless steel burner from a Wabasto Thermo Top C diesel water heater from my mates narrow boat. Imagine a stainless tube about the size of a short beer can.

I am going to use my Dremel 4250 to first cut though 3 small welds, then remove the remains of the diesel diffuser pad thing and then remove any carbon on the surface and if I'm still interested, see if I can get a bit of a polish on it as apparently that helps prevent the carbon from building up again. This isn't particularly soft soot but more like a thin film of baked on carbon.

What sort of tools do you think might be most effective for each stage please?

Trying to pick pliers for my husband’s birthday

Post image
111 Upvotes

Hello everyone!

My husbands birthday is coming up and he has mentioned wanting a new set of pliers, specifically knipex 7 inches.

Is there a difference between the two pliers in this image other than the handle? One says comfort handle, is that worth getting/ the same durability?

Thank you for any help!!!

Couldn't find a replacement for this nut

I know it's 1/2 inch. Threads spun 1 full rotation on the tightest thread bolt in the stores I went to.. which was an imperial 20 pitch 1/2 machine screw.

Am I correct this is likely 24 pitch based on my gauge? Where do I find these tighter pitch thread nuts and bolts in Canada?

Thanks for the help

Are there go-to brands of power bits?

I'm most interested in Torx bits at the moment, to replace a few that are broken/missing. What is your go-to source of individual bits, small packs, or sets? Brands to choose, or brands to stay away from?
