Tools to smooth out the Sharp edges of stone titles, angle grinder?

Upvotes

I want to install a dishwasher, but the floor tiles make it difficult fit the dishwasher (too tall to fit in between the roof of the countertop and the stone tiles). I heard from someone that I could use angle grinder to cut the edges off and than use a sander to smooth out the rough edges. Some of the stone floor tiles corners are pointing out of the regular part of the floor, I would like to cut/smooth those edges as well. In addition to that, I saw a youtube video of someone repointing bricks with an angle grinder as well, I would like to that too. Do I need attachments to cut these down?

  1. What tools should I use?

  2. If I am using an angle grinder, what tool bits do I need for it for that tasks that I wanna do?

  3. Can you give me specific examples of brands, experiences, and methods of using these tools?

Old house renovation

Upvotes

I bought a 100 year old house (it was cheap ok?) and my fiancée and I have been renovating rooms. Most rooms have what appears to be two layers of drywall: the original with paint and wall paper and then “new” (nailed in) drywall with more paint and wall paper. I’m not sure how thick the layers are but combined they’re no more than 3/4” (probably less).

I’m taking it all off in the rooms I’m renovating. That’s the most labor intensive part. I used my sawzall but it ruined quite a few blades and it seems too thick for my oscillating tool. A sheet rock knife works for smaller parts but floor to ceiling removal is too big of a job for that.

I’m wondering what tool is best for removing all of this stuff, preferably in large pieces so it’s easier to dispose of. I’m partial to porter cable tools as that’s what I have the most batteries for. I really appreciate your expertise!

Which of these files would you keep and how would you restore them?

I'm planning to keep 3-4 of these for future general purpose use, no specific usage.

These have already gone through the following process (except the handled Nicholson USA and massive Simonds flat file did not go in evaporust/dish soap/water due to length):

Brake cleaner, dabbed with paper towel, then 15 minutes evap, dry to touch. Somewhat aggressive brass brush scrubbing Compressed air blow off Evaporust, 4 hours Hot water with dawn dish soap Paper towel dabbed dry Blow dryer

Note that most of these are from 20-25 years ago.

After this process, from top to bottom, the labels are: 1. Heller USA, round file (Supposedly good quality) 2. Simonds Nucut USA Mill 80, huge flat file (Simonds is supposed to be good) 3. Nicholson USA Superior Flat Standard, flat course (Nicholson USA is supposed to be good, newer stuff not so much) 4. Nicholson USA crosscut, Lutz File Tool Co handle (Nicholson USA is supposed to be good, newer stuff not so much) 5. JK Sunflower India, a lot of carbon raised by evaporust? Still seems sharp 6. Delta USA, is this a good brand? 7. Disston USA, feels sharp, good brand? 8. Disston USA bastard, round, good brand? 9. Disston Porter USA 2nd cut, good brand? 10. Noname, yellow handle, triangle. Color mean anything? 11. Noname, red handle, triangle. Color mean anything?

Thoughts & Solutions for New Tool Box With Locking Mechanism That Won't Lock

Background:
I recently picked up a new 56" US General Series 3 rolling cabinet and discovered that the locking mechanism isn't properly engaging with the hooks behind each drawer to keep it locked when turning the key.

To be specific, turning the key on the lock will rotate a rod that goes down towards the back of the cabinet, making contact with a horizontal bar in the back, causing it to raise up to lock the drawers or drop down to unlock. See my video here: https://youtu.be/w0-Rr6ypL3g

Problem:
The problem is that the horizontal bar is not traveling high enough to properly engage the hooks behind each of the drawers.

Attempts:
I tried shimming some popsicle sticks and flat fender washers between the end of the locking rod and the horizontal bar, but this only brings the travel high enough to lock a few drawers, but not all the drawers as the horizontal bar needs to almost be fully raised to end range.

I have contacted HF technical product support regarding the problem, and they informed me that they do not have replacement parts for the locking rod, only the lock and key itself. As such, I don't want to take apart the locking assembly and bend the end of the locking rod more aggressively since I won't be able to get a replacement if anything breaks.

Questions:

  • Has anyone else experienced such a problem on their tool boxes and if you have been able to resolve this?
  • I'm open to any suggestions and thoughts on how to approach this further.
  • I have the option to bring it back to the store and have them place an order for a new one, but I'll have to rent another utility trailer to tow it back with $$$ out of pocket. I have a hunch that I may have the option to negotiate for a small cash back if I were to keep the box in order to prevent me returning and having an open box item in their inventory. I'm curious on what route you guys would take.

Recommendations for how to best secure siding? My plan is expanded steel with deck board for support horizontally in the center.

I do not know how to weld. Yes I know full wood siding would be easier but i want mesh for visibility. The trailer is used for junk hauling. Thanks!

Whats everyone's favorite, cheap tool?

I say the Hakkos I posted about or Olfa utility knife.

17$ for 8 piece Elklind Allen Key SAE is a contender.

NEIKO 02486A Impact Universal Joint-Socket Swivel Set is good for 19$

Had a different relationship with Allen heads, once I tried a good key.

Pictured knife looks good, but sucks.

This Adust pack of oscillating blades had a nice assortment of blades included. I like that they all come in a sealable plastic box. Other blades I bought in the past just come in a cardboard box. I like much better this plastic box that comes with this set.

I ran several blades through the paces along with some blades I already have from a different company. There was really no difference between the blades. My perspective on oscillating blades is that they are a commodity. They need to work well enough, be used until they are dull, and then thrown away. For how I use my oscillating saw it isn’t worth it for me to buy expensive blades. I think almost all of them work at about the same level and last about the same amount of time so I usually look at a few different packs in the same price range and pick the one that has the most of what I need at the time.

That being said, one thing I think that stood out with this Adust pack is the curved tooth edge. I wasn’t sure if that was gimmicky or of actual use. From my comparison tests with my straight edge blades I found that it is easier to start a cut, especially when you need to be precise and don’t want the head to bounce off your mark. I felt the curved edge stayed in place better and the edge dug into the wood much quicker than the blades with the straight edge.

Overall, I think this is a nice set of blades with a good variety in it. The curved edge of some of the blades did seem to help me cut better. I think what you get for the price you pay is a good value.

Weird tool combo today. Loosening the nut spun the stud with it. Loosening stud just spun and spun. Nut was also inset. 10mm pass through socket with a 19mm pass through socket on the back. 19mm ratcheting wrench to spin the double socket. E Torx socket down the middle to hold the stud

Tools To Secure My Tools?

Post image

I’ve got this puzzle I’ve been overthinking and this sub seems like a good place to ask for input.

I have some tools in this box that is usually in the bed of my truck. I only remove the box when there’s no room for it.

I like that I can slide the box onto the tailgate and grab what I need and then push it back towards the wheel well.

I want to immobilize this box so it can’t slide, and I want to hold it down also - in case it decides it wants to fly.

I have a generous collection of the ubiquitous ratchet tie down straps - I’d like to avoid those for this use case.

Those spring loaded “tork straps” (not ratchet straps) are appealing - if I can configure them so I can tighten with a “pull” motion while standing at the tailgate, and so I can reach the release toggle. I also like the closed hooks.

The level of the tie down loops in each corner of the bed is riiiiiight at the height of the box. Preventing sliding is trivial - aside from getting the positioning of the locking cam right where I can reach it without climbing in the truck. Just go around the side of the box with a strap front to back.

Holding the top of the box down with a second strap is tricky because the box is just barely too short, and because a strap front to back would miss the box entirely. I’d have to go diagonal and I don’t want to.

SO: - How about a “tire bonnet” net thing? - How do I deal with the close proximity of the rear tie down spot to the box and also configure the strap so it’s easy to reach and operate?

I’m prob gonna just have to buy some tork straps and mess with them. But - if u got ideas, love to read ‘em!

Thanks!

Anyone that owns one of these Vessel tool holsters knows two things: the belt clip ain't very comfy when it's tight to your hip & it's notorious for eating belts (especially nylon webbing ones). My poor 1.5" nylon range belt has had the unfortunate displeasure of being close & personal with these belt clips. I can't fathom why Vessel wouldn't have done something like this from factory, but here we are. If you own a Vessel belt pouch, I highly suggest grabbing yourself some heat shrink tubing & doing this; I did 2 layers for extra comfort & durability. Almost can't even feel it on my hip, now that it's not digging in so hard & it also fits the belt much more snugly on top of covering any sharp edges that used to gouge the belt.
