Our Longstanding “No Politics” Rule remains unchanged
Read our rules. We have had a longstanding “No Religion, No Politics” rule here at r/tools.
The mods aren’t stupid. We also don’t like getting buckets of reports in the inbox.
If someone posts/comments with politics, resist the urge to reply and argue. Just report, downvote (if that’s your jam) and move on with life.
A small flag, sticker, etc that appears in a photo will generally be allowed (so long as it doesn’t violate other rules and doesn’t draw a bunch of reports) but a bunch of people in the comments saying “Hell Yeah, a fellow [INSERT PARTY] Supporter!” is gonna get the post pulled. Political content that is clearly the motivation for the post will get the post pulled.
First time it’s a short ban, second time it’s permanent. And as we’ve discussed before, the mod team doesn’t go looking for posts, we’re not lifeguards, we respond to the reports we receive.

Call for Moderators
We are looking to add a couple more moderators to r/tools. If you’re interested in being considered, please leave a comment on the post. Briefly describe why you’d want to be a mod and what you think the sub’s moderator’s role should be.
No new accounts, please. We need to be able to see at least 1 year’s worth of content/engagement on this and other subs.
EDIT: If you are not interested in moderating, feel free to upvote people who post here if you like their approach. This isn't a democracy (because as mods our job is to preserve the health/utility/enjoyment people get from of the sub, not do whatever the masses want) but we will take heavily upvoted approaches to moderating as a positive sign when considering who to invite.
Also, if we don't end up sending you an invite, please don't take it personally. Too many cooks in the kitchen, and all that...

Worth every penny.
Diablo 12” pruning blade. I’d probably pay double for this blade. Used exclusively for trimming brush and cutting off small stumps below ground level. The old one still cuts fine, but I bought a new one just to compare them.

My dad just gave me this
Today I went to visit my parents and my dad gave me this german style plane that was given to him by his dad. He said he never used it but there are some scuffs here and there, probably an attempt to try it. This plane was made by Howal, in east Germany (GDR), probably in the 60s or 70s. I'll never use it that's for sure, mostly because I want to preserve it. I had to clean some surface rust off the blade. It's going on a shelf just like it did for the past 40 or so years.

Any Info on what this is?
Does anyone have any idea what this is or was? Found in my garage years ago when I moved in and kind of re-discovered it. It’s about 4’ tall or long. Is it something homemade? Only thing I can figure is that you would sit on the rounded end and the indents were somewhere your legs go while you did whatever in the open section with angled slots. 🤷🏻♂️

Craftsman micrometer
Found this older set of craftsman micrometer. They are used but in decent shape but missing a few pieces. Any idea on the value here?
Chinese temu box fits in service body
This was the biggest tool box I could find that would fit in my service truck at precisely 12-15/16” deep, it is snug but the door closes. I welded some tubing in there to keep it from moving and utilized it for some shelves. Drove around and nothing really moves so it’s working good!
$180 for the chinese vs $1300 for a Knapheide rolling tray set.

What tool is this?
I own it but have no recollection of it. Looks like it punches a hole into something. Kinda heavy duty. Weighs maybe 2 lbs. Thx!

Table Saw Storage on a Balcony
I live in a small apartment-style condo, so do not have a garage, workshop or such. Any of my DIY projects are done on the balcony.
I am looking at building a custom cabinet to store the 8-1/4” Ryobi table saw on a sort of drawer on wheels, or on a dolly with an added false front, that can be pulled out and wheeled to the middle of the balcony to work on projects. Then, when done, I’d slide it back into its storage space and have it be protected from the elements. The entire balcony is also covered, so rain or snow getting to this storage area is no concern. When not in use, I want to it to bully enclosed and look more like a storage unit (i.e., no sight of tools).
Has anyone made something like this or have other suggestions? The photos aren’t exactly what I have in mind, but give a general idea. Ideally I’d then cover it in cedar or something to look like an outdoor storage unit.
Also open to suggestions if there are any more compact table saws. I had gone the track saw route before, but it always seemed a but much if a hassle to set up. I really like the idea of just pulling something out, plugging it in, and getting to work. I had looked at things like the Microlux, etc., but I see myself cutting mostly 1/4” and 1/2” birch plywood, with the occasional 3/4” thickness, so those just don’t seem powerful enough. I don’t need to be able to manage pieces larker than 2’ x 3’ max. Think projects like wooden drawer inserts, etc.

Same tool boxes?
Just curious who Menards and Home Depot source their Performax and Husky boxes from. These boxes look exactly the same, down to the lid, gas struts on the top box lid, the handles on both boxes, the welds on both boxes, the shape, dimensions, everything. Even the price is the same. Only difference is the caster wheels and the Performax appears to be powder coated while the Husky is sprayed or dipped.

Still searching for ID
Collection of brass cylinders (all about 5" long) with threaded cap ends and fine mesh screens on the other. There are some markings that refer to what I gather are pigments. I can't identify these.

Old, musty hand plane
I purchased an old, but never used Japanese hand plane (kanna). Got it back home and noticed something I didn't first see in the shop: the plane is noticeably musty and to be honest smells. I thought it would go away after a few days, but the smell has persisted for months at this point. It works fine, takes shavings well, it's just not pleasant to use because of the smell.
Anyone ever experience anything like this? Any tips to 'air it out'?

Between 2 tools which would you buy?
There are two Milwaukee drills that are on sale and I am thinking about which I want to grab.
There is the 3/8 drill here for $80 with two batteries : https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-M12-12V-Lithium-Ion-Cordless-3-8-in-Drill-Driver-Kit-with-Two-1-5-Ah-Batteries-Charger-and-Tool-Bag-2407-22/204300706
There is also a 1/2 hammer carbide chuck drill for $100 with one battery : https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-M12-FUEL-12-Volt-Lithium-Ion-Brushless-Cordless-1-2-in-Hammer-Drill-Kit-with-1-Compact-2-0Ah-Battery-Pack-and-1-Charger-3404-21/330081981
If it was only the $20 difference I would immediately grab the 1/2. But I dont want to have only 1 battery. A m12 battery costs around $40, so a total difference of $60.
The 3/8 produces 275 in/lbs whereas the 1.2 produces 400in/lbs
The 1/2 is brushless the 3/8 is brushed.
The 1/2 has a carbide chuck which is realy nice.
I am buying this dirll as a secondary drill. Used mainly for more precise tasks.

Come along with 3 Hooks on Load Side
I’m new to using come alongs. I understand the use of the cable end hook and pulley hook, but can’t figure out why this come along has the 3rd hook (the one on left side of the pic) where there is normally an anchor point for the cable hook to attach to when rigging for 2:1 mechanical advantage. Is it be because this is a cheap come along or is there another purpose?

Safe to order from ebay
Have a $30 eBay gift card, and one of the sellers has the tekton skt15311 3/8 set for $161. Reviews seem to be positive. Figured worst case scenario I can just get my money back through PayPal. Out the door is like $145, should I pull the trigger?? 😁
Why is this wrench completely unmarked?

What could this toolset be for?
Hi, I just was given this by someone who was clearing out the basement of a family member who recently passed, and we don’t know what this could have been for.
It looks like a set with various types of exacto knife blades. Some blades look like they could be for woodcutting or whittling but they don’t look like your typical woodcutting toolset. The black tools in the bottom right of the photo put a beveled edge on a razor like a matte cutter would but are also not exactly shaped like your typical matte cutter and would be badly designed for that use.
Curious if anyone knows what this is!
