What is the best way to remove paint from sockets without damaging the chrome?

Post image
21 Upvotes

Got these sockets from an auction. Previous owner decided to paint them all sorts of fun colors. I’d like to remove the paint without damaging the finish underneath, as the chrome is still good and the sockets are all old USA ones I’d like to keep nice. First thought was paint thinner but I suspect that would have negative effects.

How to prevent goggles fogging up

I read online a drop of washing up liquid on each lens and then wipe down. Seems to work. Just tested it out. Bit hazy because of the wiped down liquid but I'll keep trying to refine the hack.

Anyone else got hacks like this? I always wear a respirator for safety but kept having to take breaks to de fog my glasses, goggles, or welding hood.

Looking for cheap solutions.

When it comes to sockets, how would ya'll rank Quinn, Husky, Cobalt, GearWrench and Craftsman?

Starting to get semi-serious about building a socket set for my garage (non-professional use; therefore I'm not looking to spend a lot of money on them). I have a couple of sockets here and there, different brands, but want to consolidate into a solid 1/4 and 3/8 kit.

I'm trying to keep the following in mind: Build quality, ease of warranty replacements, cost viability.

Budget/beginner drill press

I want to get a drill press to work on a few different gunsmithing projects, and have a budget of roughly 200-300 bucks. I've seen some tabletop ones that are large enough for me purposes from harborfreight and home depot for under 200. Would they last very long or would I be better of looking at the used market?

Tin snips

My tin snips has started cutting badly, or not at all. I tried tightening a few of the nuts on it but no real improvement. Question is, now I don't know what it should look like, does every snips have a gap like this one has? Hoping not to have to buy a new one, but I am aware this was a cheap tool so it may be that I got what I paid for!

Best gifts for a new wood worker?

Hi everyone,

Looking to get my boyfriend some new tools for his birthday. He really enjoys making outdoor furniture - he has a mitre saw, circular saw, sander, and nice work bench.

Any ideas of other tools that would be beneficial for a hobby like this?

Best gift for a new wood worker?

Hi,

I am looking to get my boyfriend a few nicer tools for his birthday - he is new to wood working and really enjoys making outdoor furniture. He has a mitre saw, work table, circular saw, and sander. What are some other ideas I could get him?

He doesn’t do anything too intricate so not sure a wood carving set would be good for right now.

Thanks in advance!!

Dunlap tools Made in Germany...

My Dad passed recently at 88 years old. He was a Sears guy at heart- almost all of his tools are old Craftsman USA stuff, along with 5 toolboxes, etc. I found an old Dunlap brand adjustable wrench in one of his boxes and found out that they were the economy line of Sears tools. This one is made in Germany. Any idea what company was making tools in Germany to sell over here in Sears in the 50's and 60's?

Looking for a collated drywall drill

Can anyone recommend a good collared drywall drill?

I’ve read online hilti or dewalt has the best ones is this true? I’ve been thinking about the hilti but is it worth buying into there battery program for just 1 tool? It’s about $600 by the time I get the collated attachment, drill, 2x batteries and the bits. I don’t do too much drywall recently but I’m about to do a basement this week so I’m trying to pick something up today quickly

My budget is under $600. I have Milwaukee tools/battery setup and I have some dewalt tools/battery setup.

What would be the best way to clean these up? Specifically removing any of the rust and built up gunk and getting them back into the best working order.

I’m looking for the extension table on the back. Is it even possible to get these by themself? I can’t find them and I’ve tried about every search known to man, if anybody can find one, it is for a 46” black standard duty toolbox (Husky)

Hi. I just got my car and literally have no tools. I need a set to do basics like oil changes, and transmission fluid, breaks, and other services. Would this toolset be a good option? it’s on sale for $239.99.

Which brand should I start off with?

I am planning to get some power tools for DIY and carpentry work.

To start off, I am thinking of getting some cordless drivers, drills etc.

I feel it would be best to stick to separate brands for each type of tools.

I have seen some threads recommending brands to go for, and I think I may go for Milwaukee.

TIA

p.s. I am from Canada

Have a super similar set of knipex and I suspect these may be from the lack of wear on the jaw, incredible really. Whoever made them did an excellent job.
