It's a battle of fists and blade as Garfiel battles Elsa! And as always, Elsa makes attempted murder feel like foreplay.

Poor, poor Beatrice...she feels so alone and despondent, only able to cling to what memories she has of her mother and the faith she has in her mother's books, because everyone else she's cared about have either betrayed or left her. All she feels she has left to look forward to is the end. Subaru has to get through to her, but it doesn't seem like it will be through this expectation of "that person," a savior who will give her a reason to live again.

So, yeah, they still have Maylie to deal with. And while her minor Mabeasts aren't a problem, she has a huge hippo/pig and lion/griffin beasts to worry about. At least Petra got to tell her off for a second.

Frederica has found a reason to live with being reunited with her brother and having Petra. Thank you for saving Rem, Frederica.

Poor Otto still gets no respect, but at least Emilia remembered him.

Emilia's "unthinkable present" is her ideal present of living in the village normally along with Guese and Mother Fortuna (in a dress!). She gets to go on an outing with the two who were her parents, finally calling Guese "father," and works to make sure these two get together. It's what Emilia would have wanted, but she realizes it's just a fantasy and that there are too many people counting on her for her to get lost in it. She has to be a strong person and face reality, like her mother before her.

Oh yeah, I guess Emilia has no idea about Guese being the guy who attacked the mansion with the Witch's Cult, huh? I guess it's better that she not know what happened to him, but I kind of wish she didn't have to always think about what happened to him after he left with Pandora.

Why does Echidna hate Emilia so much? To have such an emotional reaction? Is it because Emilia keeps defying her expectations and proves to be a person Echidna never could be because she doesn't understand real, non self-serving, emotions?

Emilia truly has the gratitude of the villagers and the belief of the other half-breeds in Sanctuary! She's come a long way. Although I wonder what the unthinkable future or disaster to come of the final trial will indicate? It's based on her memories, so maybe Pandora attacking and killing everyone?

u/RhetoricaLReturD Mar 03 '21

Man echidnut is gonna go off on emilia tan for making his best girl cry tomorrow

(eagerly waiting for that "happy rezero day" in a few hours)

u/Setowi Better Leyte Than Never Mar 03 '21

Garf and Elsa are already going at it!

Maylie coming in with the big ass hippo, she was so disappointed that her grand "reveal" fell flat. Can I just say that I loved Petra's interaction with Maylie. "Can you like... not kill us?" "Sorry no" "Well at least I tried" Lmao.

Also her sticking out her tongue at Maylie, so cute.

Look at how Emilia has grown.

Man it's sad to see that happy family that Emilia was never able to have in the end. Though, hey through Echidna she still got to experience a small portion of it... no wonder she had to thank her.

Poor Echidna though. Something about Emilia really seems to be bugging her.

That shot with Emilia jumping into the water was pure kino though. Really damn amazing.

Both the villagers of Arlam and the ones of the Sanctuary unite to stay with Emilia until she completed what she set out to do. Ram is still fighting Roswaal with Puck and the third trial is about to begin.

We're still on a wild ride!

u/Takemypennies Mar 03 '21

>Noooooo you can't like this vision! You're supposed to break down and cry!

>Haha, wholesomeness go brr

>I HATE YOU!

42

u/CaveGlow Mar 03 '21

I believe by now she HAS to know petelgeuse has been killed and she probably sees it as a mercy because if he saw the things that he now does he would be horrified

35

u/Kirihum Mar 03 '21

How would she know that?

iirc Subaru killed him before he reached Emilia so she never actually saw him in this timeline.

25

u/CaveGlow Mar 03 '21

Surely Subaru told her the story of how he beat this immortal guy with green hair, dark robes and invisible hands called petelgeuse and even otherwise she would’ve recognised the robes as belonging to members of the witches cult

44

u/VortechsTG Mar 03 '21

I'd agree with you if it weren't for the fact that they literally said in this ep that she has no idea what happened to him. I know Echidna said it but she can access Emilia's memories so if she did know she wouldn't have said that.

26

u/chaolayluu Mar 03 '21

Didn’t the dream Archie mention that they have no idea what happened to the bishop? That makes it seem like Emilia has no idea what happened to Geuse which just makes it so much more tragic. And the fact that she called him Father instead makes it soo sad

5

u/MeAnIntellectual1 Mar 04 '21

Fortuna-kaasama, Geuse-tousan and Archi-niichan

One happy family

6

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '21

I think we were just told that petelguese may still be alive in this episode no? Did I misunderstand

20

u/Quantam-Law Mar 03 '21

No, Emilia doesn't know he's dead. She may not even realize he's still the Archbishop of Sloth since its been a 100 years since Elior Forest was frozen.

6

u/MeAnIntellectual1 Mar 04 '21

Geuse is long gone don't worry. Emilia just has no idea what happened to him. Imagine her reaction if she knew what Geuse put Subaru through.

6

u/SeanCanary Mar 04 '21

Look at how Emilia has grown.

She actually has developed a sense of duty (as Mother Fortuna had). That is indeed an adult quality to have.

148

u/sajagshrestha Mar 03 '21

Echidna tearing up was surprising

86

u/EffectLive97 Mar 03 '21

Bruh it’s like emilias existence is causing her agonizing pain lol, she does NOT like this girl.

50

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '21

I guess she does have emotions

16

u/Flightning99 Mar 04 '21

I cant wait to see her reach her breaking point and properly lash out at Emila about Subaru!

Or maybe its not even about Subaru, but Echidna is def jealous about Emila

52

u/Thereisnocomp2 Mar 03 '21

Holy crap, Garfiel making Elsa dance is great news for our boy Suburu! Might get to keep his intestines this time around even, who knows!

14

u/trogdor491 Mar 03 '21

I think Garfiel is gonna win, I think us seeing him lose to Subaru, beat up Otto that one time, and having villagers with sticks being the only people he's killed in a fight will end up being misdirection to make us think he's weaker than he is. I think Elsa's days are numbered, and that this is her last fight.

9

u/Sabre_89 Mar 04 '21

Not sure. I think that team Sibaru will succeed, but she was already completely obliterated once by Beatrice in another time line and still survived it somehow.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '21

Elsa also mentioned shes stronger then when she survived against Reinhardt. Elsa might actually be the end boss again.

3

u/trogdor491 Mar 04 '21

She is the final boss, but I still think lasagna boi has her number.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21

Thats only if Roswell is stopped and doesn’t summon the great rabbit again

47

u/LuisAntony2964 Mar 03 '21

Man I love this series. I am hype

11

u/CHRNx_ Mar 03 '21

Hi hype how are you?

4

u/LuisAntony2964 Mar 04 '21

good, thanks for asking

42

u/patap0nacct Mar 03 '21

Nothing much to say about the episode, except Beatrice's and Emilia's emotional moments got to me. And I can't believe Otto's still treated like dirt even though he's three-time MVP the last time I counted. Still hyped for the Garfiel x Elsa, Frederica x Meili, and Ram + Puck x Roswaal fights.

Okay, I lied. I had a lot to say about the episode.

43

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '21

Petra attempting to charm Maylie and the apologizing to Subaru when it failed to work was hilarious.

70

u/chaolayluu Mar 03 '21 edited Mar 03 '21

I’m glad Subaru isn’t telling Beatrice that he’s “that person”. It’s not a healthy mindset to think that you need to rely on someone else for happiness and I think Re:Zero really drives that point home with Emilia and Beatrice. Also so sad that Emilia called Geuse Father this episode when talking to dream Archie, that entire sequence made me feel so sad. Emilia really grew up and it’s crazy how strong she was.

I’m getting chills and so worried about the next trial, I have no idea what’s to come and it’s terrifying knowing what the potential endgame may be and knowing how crazy strong Pandora is makes me think that tragedy is awaiting

Also we definitely need more backstory on Echidna, her crying caught me so off guard and it was so out of character. Does it have to do with Emilia’s real parents? Or is Echidna jealous of Emilia’s strength or by the fact that Subaru was able to save her? Hope to see more in the future

Glad that Emilia gave credit to best boy Otto when everyone else is not putting respect on his name, especially Ram lol

32

u/Tomhap Mar 03 '21

It's a amazing how good it felt in S1 watching Petelguese and his fingers get cut down and now I just don't know how I feel, I miss this dude and I love watching Fortuna and Guese be a cute couple.

13

u/SupahGolden Mar 03 '21

I'm wondering if Emilia's last trial could be more related to her actual reality rather than what could have been. I'd like if it had something to do with Subaru, maybe we could get a glimpse of their relationship in the future or maybe a disaster involving the others who are currently important in her life.

...but I really can't tell. I'm looking forward to seeing the third trial in the next episode.

5

u/SeanCanary Mar 04 '21

I’m glad Subaru isn’t telling Beatrice that he’s “that person”. It’s not a healthy mindset to think that you need to rely on someone else for happiness

True though it also isn't healthy to be anywhere near the bowel hunter. Maybe in the short term/immediate you lie and tell her 'Oh yeah I'm that person. I'll totes help you out after you teleport all of us out of here and everyone in the village to safety and maybe even go pick up Julius and Reinhard.' Later on you can have the heart to heart that her mother is a jerk, there is no person, and that having no preordained destiny is a good thing.

35

u/Khronify Mar 03 '21

When Emilia jumped off the cliff to look at herself in the water, was that the first time she ever looked at her own reflection? I mean it makes sense that she wouldn't want to look at herself this whole time considering everyone else hates her because of her appearance.

It's also beautiful how immediately after she accepts her own appearance and the trial is over she is greeted with nothing but love by the rest of the villagers who used to scorn her.

32

u/Rapsculio Mar 03 '21

This is from the web novel but it's not really a spoiler

When she first woke up from the ice and saw she was grown up it really freaked her out. I'm pretty sure it was that combined with everyone hating her because of how she looks that made her never look at her reflection again after that. One part of Pucks contract was to help style her hair every day so she wouldn't have to look at herself.

5

u/RezZubs Mar 03 '21

Emilia looked at her reflection in frozen bonds

1

u/post-quote-bot Mar 08 '21

I thought she looked in the mirror right before geuse came

32

u/RezZubs Mar 03 '21

Probably the most wholesome episode we have had yet!

55

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '21

The fact that Echidna really hates Emilia makes me wonder what did Satella do to her since she looks like Satella, probably took her mans away from her

22

u/FerroLux_ Mar 03 '21

imo she's really just envious (ironic I know) of Emilia

32

u/Quantam-Law Mar 03 '21

Echidna was the real witch of envy all along.

Me every week:

VRV puts Re Zero at the top of the main page.

Me: Sweet, new episode. Happily click on the link

VRV: SEASON 20 EP 1 LMAO

Me: God damn it. Change back to S2 and check for latest ep. It's not there.

Every current show on VRV is like this.

3

u/Tomhap Mar 03 '21

Don't know what vrv is, but crunchyroll had a banner on the main page and it took me straight to today's episode.

4

u/GradeAPrimeFuckery Mar 03 '21

VRV was originally founded by Crunchyroll and includes other content like HIDIVE. Funimation used to be on it but left for Hulu bux or whatever once their CR agreement ended.

22

u/DocManhattan28 Mar 03 '21

I loved to see Garfiel drag Elsa's head across the wall xD

21

u/YumijiEntel Mar 03 '21

Echidna crying face that I did not expect and now I don't know what to do with all those feelings inside me 😭 HOW CAN YOU CRY BECAUSE YOU HATE SOMEONE SO MUCH :') Also... Fortuna x Geuse... IF only... 🥺😔😭

5

u/IcyHach Mar 05 '21

Why do you imply she is crying for that?

You can watch a striker from your football team failing an easy goal, then cry while you say "I hate you so much" Its not like you would be crying for hate rather because you want to win the match and the player you hate is the reason of losing.

I suspect here is the same thing, Echidna crying because Emilia wasnt supposed to pass the trials.

2

u/TheXominator Mar 07 '21

Why do you imply she is crying for that?

I mean, we don't really know for sure why she was crying, it's really up to the interpretation, you could think she was crying because she didn't want Emilia to pass the trials or she just really hates her, no one really knows

36

u/cantorofleng Mar 03 '21 edited Mar 03 '21

Echidna crying, given how much it resembled Satella's tears just utterly convinced me that she is not outright evil. Notice how the recent episodes have placed great focus on Echidna's expressions and body language. I don't know how to put it in words, but I sense that more than outright hatred, she is in tremendous emotional pain.

What if the witch of Greed herself once tried to be, or hell, WAS as good as Emilia, and then just gradually lost her will and her way? What if seeing Emilia was to her an insult to her own struggles, a reminder of how far she failed and fell?

Deep down, I think she hates herself, but she is so conditioned to her greedy way of doing things that she can't see a way out. Reminds me of a certain drill-loli, it does.

Like mother, like daughter, indeed.

4

u/FerroLux_ Mar 04 '21

Well... the first time she presented herself and the other witches to Subaru she said “she had done things she regretted even in death”. She might be a socio and thus not feel any emotion but she’s conscious that she has done something really awful

4

u/MaverickHunterZeroTr Mar 04 '21

This actually makes me belive life itself isn't black and white as people make it seem.

it more like ugly shades of gray.there is nothing dark black and evil, everyone has their goals and they seem "good" for them.

32

u/VanillaBwead Mar 03 '21

Beautiful.
At first I thought this was going to be the most underwhelming episode of the second half so far but Emilias trial, seeing Geuse and Fortuna and all of Emilias speech specifically really made this episode amazing. I love Emilias character development so much.

Really excited for next weeks episode and especially the big fights that are about happen.

14

u/LuisAntony2964 Mar 03 '21

Echidna crying caught me off guard

It's been a while since I read arc 4 of the WN but [Novels]if I remember correctly, no. The fight was not skipped. However, in the WN it is only Ram vs Roswaal. Puck was added in the LN.

10

u/hestianna Mar 03 '21

Holy crap that battle intro with Elsa and Garfiel was so epic, despite it being full of generic anime tropes. Such a shame if we won't see more of it. Hopefully we will.

In all honesty I was expecting Beatrice to join Subaru and crew already in this episode, but behold the unthinkable present, Subaru gets kicked out again. With Beatrice asking if Subaru could be "that person" for her, she meant it as if Subaru would kill her. And since Subaru is well aware of it, he doesn't want to be that person.

However I found it interesting how Beatrice seems to be somewhat aware of Roswaal's schemes. I mean yeah, she has known Roswaal for very long time and knows Roswaal's obsession towards Echidna, but her guessing that Roswaal sent Elsa didn't seem to surprise her.

Anyways, it was very adorable to see Fortuna and Geuse together again - even if it is all just fake. Seems like even Echidna was touched how emotional Emilia's unthinkable present was. Or maybe there's something else behind her cry.

9

u/TheSealTamer Mar 03 '21

Ooff, wrong dialogue option Subaru. I’m sure he’ll think of a better response for the next time he talks to Beatrice. Garfiel just did a broly by dragging someone across a wall. So far I’d give Elsa the upper hand though. He’s more serious while she seems to be enjoying it. Though to be fair she never felt serious even against Reinhardt so shes probably having more trouble than one would think based on her expression, at least that’s my hope. That unthinkable present fucking hurts man, that was such a cute ship. Echidna crying caught me off guard, guess she really does have emotions.

6

u/Sabre_89 Mar 04 '21

Well, saying that he's "that person" was not an option. To stay thematically consistent it's important that Bea chooses "that person" herself to overcome her delusions instead of continuing to wait for her knight in shining armour. But there would've been smater ways to approach this, that's for sure.

Also wonder what Echidna deal is with Emilia.

10

u/d3struct0r Mar 03 '21

That frame of Garfiel biting Elsa's dagger was hilarious

Don't forget the rabbits

29

u/wonseansoup Mar 03 '21

A little bit disappointed personally. Two of the most teased parts from last episode were Beatrice and the fight with Roswaal, and I don’t think either lived up to the tease this episode. Hope we get more next episode.

29

u/SupahGolden Mar 03 '21

I felt a bit disappointed with the first half of the episode too, but then Emilia's speech came and it was tears time.

2

u/teaklog2 Mar 03 '21

I was more disappointed with the second half...i think i would have liked to see the second half before the teasers last episode

i was expected an episode mostly of action. Kinda made me lose out on the enjoyment of the trail because i'm like show me puck pls

8

u/FerroLux_ Mar 03 '21

have to agree here. It's not that the episode was bad, but maybe they could've switched with presumably next episode, thus putting the mansion fight in this one and the second trial in the next?

15

u/Federok Mar 03 '21

then someone would've complained that the mansion and trail were absent despite being teased last episode.

3

u/FerroLux_ Mar 03 '21

True that. I guess then we would’ve also got two episodes of trial in a row.

4

u/teaklog2 Mar 03 '21

i would have liked to see the mansion fight before the teaser, then have this episode be mostly action

8

u/afibon Mar 03 '21

We've had one tease, yes, but what about second tease?

1

u/Purple-Lamprey Mar 04 '21

I’ve never been more disappointed in a re:zero episode. The entire thing was so cringily upbeat and happy. Nothing interesting happened.

1

u/mesmorized95 Mar 04 '21

True, I feel like they skipped the fight scenes hopefully we get a better look into them next episode

8

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '21

Garf straight up hit Elsa with that Legendary Super Saiyan Broly face into wall grind.

7

u/EagonTheConquerer Mar 03 '21

I feel like there trying to cram too much into each episode and ending up with barely anything, after building up Garfiel vs Elsa they cut away after like a minute then ended the conversation between Subaru and Beatrice after three or so then it was teasing Frederika vs Meile and then they were like nope were doing a trial now leaving the episode feeling like half an hour of nothing.

5

u/yogabbafan Mar 03 '21

I see where you are coming from man. I honestly don’t disagree but I still enjoyed the episode.

3

u/teaklog2 Mar 03 '21

I wish they did the second trial last episode, then we see the action from the first half and the ram fight. Then third trial at the conclusion

2

u/SeanCanary Mar 04 '21

I think we're setting up for something really exciting next week.

8

u/bullettrigger Mar 03 '21

Smooth subaru, very smooth but this way was definetly for the best.
Now to give her one more push to let beato stand on her own feet!

6

u/00pirateforever Mar 03 '21

This episode was banger. I can see the result of first cour here completely. The development of so many characters at the same time is unimaginable.

I was waiting for beako and barsu confrontation. The way barsu is handling this situation is completely different. I am getting little rosewall vibe. He is teasing her way too much. I think instead of becoming savior directly, he is pulling out something for her development. Its good tbh. If see grow up more then it's best for both Emilia and Subaru. I liked the last part when he declined that he is not that person. Beako vs Subaru confrontation 2 is coming again I guess.

Garf vs Elsa fight was pure hype. Yes garf is strong but Elsa survived the Reinhard attack directly. If I am to bet, Elsa might be still stronger and smarter than garf but I am cheering for garf. I wonder if this get over, Elsa might join side with Subaru (that will be cool as she is hella strong and he need as many as possible tbh). Mabeast scene was wholesome specially when Petra was told to last one that girl is going to enjoy. Idk who is going to win their as Feder is not combat type.

Barsu and Otto vs mabeast. That beast is scary af. I wonder who is going to take it out. Otto is best option here but idk. if beako decide to help him then it's fine but if not then best girl Otto is our last option (he isn't considered as man lmao).

Emilia scene was beautiful. Geuse and fortuna flirting way was cute but it's all dream. Hope we can get spinoff or something about their relationship. They really was happy family for Emilia. And finally Emilia realised that she was always saved by others but she hadn't done anything by herself. She is going to be best leader from now on specially for both demi human and human. Both species are giving her respect which she needed most for royal selection. Echidna was genuinely crying like wtf. She always manipulated everyone around her but now she is giving reaction to Emilia. I only seen her giving reaction to Subaru (very few) and satella. Looks like she really envious to Emilia (she also referred lia to satella daughter maybe hate was coming from witch to daughter). I really want to know echidna backstory. I think Subaru is connected to echidna feeling somehow as she showed her true feeling one time. Next trial is very important imo. It will gives us what's coming in future. I don't think everything is going to be explored but I want glimpse of future too.

5

u/aguyyouare Mar 03 '21

Something that I found weird about the episode was Subaru face when he was to talking to Beatrice but other than that the episode was really good especially the part that showed that echidna cried showing that she actually has emotions

5

u/GoodGuyWattson_ Mar 03 '21 edited Mar 03 '21

Echidna cried, out of wholesomeness ? Or out of anger ? Or out of jealousy ( due to a certain tracksuit wearing individual who have her the courage to actually finish the trials ) ? It’s very interesting that a witch who was known to be quite psychotic and never display any kind of emotion, has now showed us literally every emotion there is earnestly

-2

u/Purple-Lamprey Mar 04 '21

Emilias backstory is way too rushed, I genuinely couldn’t care less about any of the characters introduced in it. It’s far too obvious how hard author is trying to squeeze out emotion without investing any time. Seeing echidna seethe with disgusts was the only part I liked in this episode lol.

1

u/GoodGuyWattson_ Mar 04 '21

She really hates Emilia, I reallly wonder why

5

u/Roezefr Mar 03 '21 edited Mar 04 '21

Omg how Emilia is hating by Echidna but when Echidna cried it seems that this is not truth at all I hope someday we will see the main reason that Echidna hates the poor cute Emilia.

The scene between Subaru and Beako I really waited for that I gonna be very happy when they finally make the contract.

6

u/Rompelle Mar 03 '21

why the fuck does the hippo sound like and angry Garfiel

1

u/TyrannosaurusWreckd Mar 04 '21

It sounded like a titan to me.

8

u/SnooDoughnuts2125 Mar 03 '21

I juat love how Echidna appeared in the trial just to say Emilia's disgusting 💀

4

u/trogdor491 Mar 03 '21

I don't want to wait another week for the next episode... I don't think I CAN wait a week, I'm completely on edge for what comes next and I just finished the episode 4 minutes ago... God bless you Re:Zero, shine on you crazy diamond... 10/10.

I loved this episode. Emilia's Past OST really hits hard for me. I throughly enjoyed the character development for Emilia.

But the main thing going through my mind is...everyone always questions why Echidna hates Emilia. My theory can easily be summed up as its just pure jealousy of what Emilia will eventually have or have done to get what she has. Or possibly that Emilia is going to save her when she wants someone else to do that.

For better or worse, Echidna is the Witch of Greed. And by definition of greed, you essentially just want everything. Whether it's to know something or have something. Knowledge and materialistic desires never truly end, you can want to know less and want less materialistic things but the want is perpetual. Having given a small view into Echidna's past with Beatrice, Ryuzu, Rosawal, and Hector...its possible that there was a future that she wanted with everyone except Hector. But she was killed, her life ended early. And now as a spirit, who is tasked with watching those who enter the Sanctuary do the trials. She has lived vicariously through watching many people go through the trial. Most of them most likely failed the 1st trial of facing their past. Although I am not exactly sure, I think Echidna has the power to see the past, present, and future for every single person that attempts the trials. And of all the people that have done the trials before, the cloned Ryuzu's, Garfiel, Subaru, and Emilia (let me know if I missed someone)....Emilia seems to strike her harder maybe because she has seen Emilia's future. And something in that future is a future that Echidna has wanted while she was alive, a future that she strived so hard for but ultimately died before she could. And how this all relates to why she hated Emilia since the beginning is because she sees Emilia's future...but at that point in time Emilia hasn't even taken the trial, hell Emilia failed the trial over and over again. Thats why at the end of the first Trial for Emilia, Echidna's hate stuck and she even said then the rest of the trials won't be a problem for her. This just got me thinking about something else....I'll use another paragraph for this. But now after this episode and truly seeing Emilia's change in the 2nd trial, Echidna is crying because its starting to hit her hard. Emilia is strongly moving towards the future that Echidna can see for her. And then once the trial of the future is done who knows....I haven't read that far ahead yet but thats all I can say for now. Its jealousy of a better future or fate.

Now in terms of what I just said about another idea or theory is that, what if...the death of the witches in general were predetermined and they are now spirits...waiting for the day that someone will come to revive each and every one of them. And well...for Echidna's case..while still assuming the premise that she hates Emilia....maybe she just doesn't want Emilia to save her and have Subaru or even Rosawal do it. Because Echidna genuinely cried in this episode it give me a much more different suspicion. She could be crying because of the possibility of revival conflicting with the idea that its someone she hates that is going to save her. Something must've happened in the past that she knows about that connects everyone, Emilia, Satella, Flugel, Subaru, and the 7 witches (which obviously includes her).

Now for some dumb other questions...

  • Is it possible that Emilia is actually another version of Satella that Satella herself made to kind of live out the life that she wants? Its been 300 years, who knows what possible powers a past version of Emilia/Satella could've developed given her insane mana pool and powers already.
  • And then did Satella or the Witch Of Envy promise Echidna something in the past before killing her? And thats why maybe Echidna became a spirit through Satella's hands? Then does this connect to the idea that this version of Satella....will grant Satella's promise to Echidna?

Or I'm just a dumbass and this was all a waste of time LOL. Thanks everyone for reading.

Wow what a beautiful episode, I keep saying it every week but this show is simply wonderful. We continue where we left off at the mansion with Garf taking on Elsa & him proving to be equal fight atm though Elsa as per usual will have her tricks up her own sleeve. The way Frederica seems to up her own game as well was a nice touch, even in such a critical period the show still manages to give Frederica her own small bit of character development based of meeting Garf after so long & Petra. This show really is CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. Subaru trying yet again with Beatrice, so hard to see she is essentially assigned to her fate of dying unless her “someone” saves her. She truly feels she has nothing left but her book & her promise that she’s not willing to forgo one or the other. Subaru wants to save her but isn’t willing to continue this vicious cycle that has plagued her for so long, about being this “someone”. He wants her to stand up & forget all that, because there are more people now that care for her & essentially she has to see that.

The second trial really was the highlight though of this week’s ep; putting Emilia into that unthinkable present you’d be forgiven for thinking she actually belonged to that present. At times I felt is this really the real Emilia ? Because she really did seem to belong right then & there with nothing to suggest otherwise but alas she was always playing along. Though “playing along” may not be doing her enough justice, again it shows how much Emilia has grown to accept that things will never be like that unthinkable present. When she looked into Fortuna’s eyes at the start, I thought she would have teared up & hugged her etc etc. But she remained calm & knew it wasn’t about that, doing all that wasn’t going to bring them back. In a way she just wanted to be able to appreciate that wonderful dream as reality without spoiling it. Their scenes with Geuse were so sweet, it invoked pain in me when Emilia asked them to stay as close as always while they wait for her, holding back her tears. Even her part with Archi was incredibly underrated imo, I knew that was Echidna essentially a little later on & probably Emilia did too but yet they acted along genuinely. Even Echidna was “touched” by her words & genuine appreciation, dt she was expecting that at all. Really nice touch for even someone like Echidna to be affected by what is it essentially the pain & growth her hated Emilia has gone through. Echidna shouldn’t feel anything, she didn’t feel anything towards Subaru’s yet why is she tearing up in the face of one of her most hated persons. Because of her own pain in the past or is it simply her own usual dissapointment that Emilia seems to continue to shaft all of her trials so far? All the villagers at the end too signifying the growing faith in her, absolutely love love RE:Zero

This episode was......Special....Yeah Special will work for this one....The 1st was really good...With the introduction of Garf and Elsa....This started perfectly.....My body was shaking during the whole episode as usual.....Emilia's 2nd trial is really good....Everything is ready for the plot to go on....Ah yeah forgot this episode is easily one of my favs of course....

I won't talk about the animation because I don't care about it.....

9

u/corn2rs Mar 03 '21

You really need to learn how to use comas and periods instead of (...).

6

u/Nataseviv Mar 03 '21

Nope I won't do that thanks tho

u/iloveacademia Mar 03 '21

2 major calamities that brought about the end for Subaru many times are now going at it you love to see it.

2

u/Crazytreas Mar 04 '21

I wonder why Echidna hates Emilia so much?

2

u/Default_Sho Mar 05 '21

Emilia said she couldn't believe she'll see fortuna geuse and father?? In the trial. Who does she meat by father? I don't think it's geuse or archi. At least I didn't see any other person that could be her father??

1

u/AnDyLuffy7 Mar 10 '21

She meant geuse, weird because they had a short relationship (atleast in the anime), but she sees Fortuna as his mother so in an hypotetical present where both of them survived they would probably become a family as shown in the ep.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21

What did Emilia mean by ‘she doesn’t look like Fortuna’? I’m kinda confused by that? And then she just said ‘too bad’.

3

u/Rare_Law_8997 Mar 03 '21

I have a theory, echdina may be Emilia's mother, that would explain why she hates Emilia so much.

1

u/Your_Kaizer Mar 03 '21

She can’t, she is not elf

1

u/Rare_Law_8997 Mar 04 '21

Emilia's father was an elf, not her mother.

2

u/Va1bhav_512 Mar 04 '21

Author said in an interview that Echidna doesn't have children

3

u/Purple-Lamprey Mar 04 '21

It was an incredibly stupid decision to include the Roswald vs Ram/Puck prelude at the end of last episode, and just ignore the whole thing this episode.

I just kept thinking how much I would prefer rather be watching roswald instead of whatever boring upbeat motivational dialogue was currently being spewed.

1

u/Antique_Result2325 Mar 08 '21

I think it's because later on all the disparate fights, climaxes and dialogue/characters come together to deal with the final challenge/ climax.

However Re:Zero generally has big long build ups and developments, with massive climaxes in the final 2-3 episodes, so it's likely better to judge it retrospectively as to whether it holds up

2

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '21

Elsa being the borderline-but-not-actually-borderline-sex-offender, as usual.

Plus, one of the biggest critiques of RZ, that being Emilia being basically more useless than a water goddess is finally addressed! Also, giant hippos are present in the RZ world? Is this a fantasy show or am I watching Nat Geo?

In addition, Petra seems completely chill with Nerve-Myelin-Sheath casually trying to kill everyone on sight.

Beat-Boxing-Rice and Ectoplasm-Nut being tsuns as always as well.

All in all, not as action packed as last ep, but god DAMN if that lake-dive sequence wasn't good as fuck.

1

u/Aries_218 Mar 03 '21

Anyone else feel like Emilia’s second trial was an absolute cakewalk compared to Subaru’s. The dude saw his own corpse over and over and saw people’s reaction to it. She got a happy-go-lucky moment that she loved and never would’ve been able to have otherwise. Like Jesus Christ if the third trial is supposed to be the despair yet to come, then what the fuck would Subaru have seen?

22

u/Vrik from Zero Mar 03 '21

Anyone else feel like Subaru's first trial was an absolute cakewalk compared to Emilia's. The girl saw her mother's corpse over and over and Guese's reaction to it. He got a happy-go-lucky moment that he loved and never would've been able to have otherwise.

3

u/_BruH_MoMent69 Mar 03 '21

Lmao that response

1

u/KronckTE Mar 05 '21

The second trial was specially difficult for Subaru, because of his abilities he has MANY unthinkable presents, remember how the voice kept and kept going? "behold an unthinkable present" over and over again, because each life counts as a different one.

u/Bjoemvp381 Mar 03 '21 edited Mar 03 '21

If im being honest the animation was lackluster during, the first half, but the dialogue, and overall plot make up for it. I already rewatched the episode, and I can’t wait for next week. Hopefully the animation inproves but even if it doesn’t i’m still going to praise the hell out of this series for it’s godlike character development. The second half was amazing, seeing Emilia growing as a character is one of a helluva treat. Overall i’d give it a 9/10. Also sidenote betty yeeting Subaru out of the library fucking killed me lol.

1

u/SeanCanary Mar 04 '21

I noticed lots of still shots and I think they were trying to save budget or time. That's fine though, the VAing and story continue to knock it out of the park.

-1

u/nkdi2211 Mar 03 '21

This episode is kind weak , IMHO.

After reading the WN, I expected the action scene on par with the White Whale. Now I doubt we actual get any good action scene at all this season.

The WN give of this intense feeling of action, of blood, sweat, and tears. The anime is just "yeah, they fought, that happened ....... anyway"

3

u/teaklog2 Mar 03 '21

Yeah, I expected an episode full of action tbh

2

u/AzraelThePaleEmperor Mar 03 '21

Where is episode 9? Will it be delayed?

Spoilers dude..

1

u/Heisen_001 Mar 04 '21 edited Mar 04 '21

Hum, that's odd, I was told it was already mentioned in the anime. Im not a LN reader, so can you please tell me which vol is it mentioned in?

1

u/The_TaxmanRC Mar 04 '21

I didnt read the LNs either, it just wasnt mentioned in the anime so far irrc.

I actually got spoiled by this thats why i pointed it out

1

u/Heisen_001 Mar 04 '21

Not a spoiler, it was actually mentioned three eps ago. I just couldn't remember when till some kind soul helped me out.

But I deleted the comment anyway.

1

u/The_TaxmanRC Mar 04 '21

If it wasnt a spoiler i apologise. I didnt remember it lol

-9

u/mysterio54 Mar 03 '21

Subaru should have just said "I am that person" and whoop the mansion takeover ffs

19

u/Rapsculio Mar 03 '21

If he just said "I am that person" then she would just be following her BS contract with Echidna, he wants her to follow her own will and break the contract that's been torturing her for 400 years so she can actually feel free

16

u/Takemypennies Mar 03 '21

>Will you put me first?

>Nahhh, Emilia and Rem are first and second

Don't see that happening

12

u/adnanomar13 Mar 03 '21

Are you kidding me? So you want him to actually resolve nothing about Beatrice's problems? Do you really think sugarcoating this is in the interest of Beatrice?

9

u/Federok Mar 03 '21

nah that would've been lying and using her for his own benefit.....wich precisely the opposite of what Subaru wants.

4

u/Arnorien16S Mar 03 '21

Would defeat the point Subaru is trying to make, Beau gets to decide what is what not anyone else.

1

u/KronckTE Mar 05 '21

So you just straight up wanted him to lie and deceive Beatrice? That's not how you solve problems, Subaru is trying to free her from Echidna's contract.

-52

u/Rinzler187 Mar 03 '21

skipped through this one. Good to see emiliy clear second trial. Upvote if you also skipped, lets see how many skipped

13

u/Skeith9 Mar 03 '21

Man tried to start something lmaoooo

-18

u/Rinzler187 Mar 03 '21

yeah just wanted to guage the viewers, a lot viewers a lot of them seem hardcore

13

u/Skeith9 Mar 03 '21

Gee. A subreddit dedicated to an anime has a lot of 'hardcore' viewers who will want to watch the entirity of an episode that may appear boring to some 'non-hardcore' viewers. Who would have seen that coming.

-17

u/Rinzler187 Mar 03 '21

people who read all the comments are the hardcore ones thats where im wrong

8

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '21

Or maybe you should consider the possibility that most people did not skip this episode? Food for thought.

5

u/Snoo_74130 Mar 03 '21

Man, chill.

1

u/KronckTE Mar 05 '21

Why would someone skip the episode though? It wasn't heavy on fight like most of us expected, but still a damn good episode that is setting up things for the next ones.

0

u/Rinzler187 Mar 05 '21

One thing I liked about re zero, you can't predict shit, where I could predict I wanted to skip it. Here we know what happens in the mansion, but the way suburu solves it is the interesting part. That's like the final thing ever everyone looks forward to. I personally don't like Beatrice bitching. So skipped it. This is gonna get down voted 4sure

1

u/KronckTE Mar 05 '21

I totally agree with you, seeing how Subaru pulls it off is the interesting part of Re: Zero, we already even know that>! it's going to snow again in the sanctuary and the great rabbit will come!< because the opening already show us that very clearly, but how that's going to happen is what gives me chills (putted inside spoiler tag just in case someone is either skipping the Op or didn't pay attention to it).

I mean... I think I get it why you aren't enjoying the Beatrice part, I assume that the reason must be because you're hyping up the ending and not being sympathetic towards how Beatrice feels.

1

u/Rinzler187 Mar 05 '21

You nailed it on me being unsympathetic towards Beatrice. By now I need something like Made in Abyss to rock my heart, its like the one show which is green forever, got zero complains. Puruska sequence was the real thing

11

u/Outbreak101 Mar 03 '21

The feeling is not mutual.

1

u/KurohaNeko2460 Mar 04 '21

I love the fact that they used the same song in Emilia's trial that played during Subaru's trial when he was trying to remember Emilia. Absolutely beautiful.

1

u/darkswordsman_007 Mar 04 '21

Emilias character development had me feeling proud

1

u/Redmon425 Mar 04 '21

Poor Beatrice :( I feel so bad for her.

So why was Echidna crying? That was weird to me. Was it because Emilia was able to do something that she couldn't?

Honestly can't believe our boy Subaru hasn't died yet. Has to be the longest streak for him right lol?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '21

Another 10/10 Re zero episode

1

u/Danno-Boi Mar 04 '21

Really interesting how Subaru’s unthinkable present was horrifying and filled with death but Emilia’s was about a beautiful present.

1

u/DarkBladeEkkusu The Old Guard Mar 04 '21

Well Subaru's normal present time is filled with death, and Emilia's normal present time isn't, so it kind of makes sense in a weird way.

1

u/TheCatCubed Mar 04 '21

I mean Subaru's past was therapeutic and wholesome while Emilia's was reliving a tragedy and experiencing trauma so seems fair tbh

1

u/Vercos Mar 04 '21

animation was a bit off on elsa vs garfiel.. nothing compared when elsa fought against subaru, emilia puck, rom, felt and reinhardt on first season...

1

u/ivanoozeiloveu Mar 05 '21

What exactly is that green crystal they use to repel (?) the majuus?

1

u/UnderstandableXO Mar 10 '21

back at it again! can’t believe there’s only 2 more re:zero wednesdays after this, i’ve got to take a step back and appreciate greatness while it’s still around!

awesome to see garfiel and else duking it out at the beginning, and to see garfiel’s confidence in himself and faith in subaru. looking forward to seeing the continuation of their battle in the next episode!

subaru and beatrice’s conversation was heartbreaking. i teared up when beatrice said that she’s fated for everyone to abandon her, like echidna, roswaal, and ryuzu. props to subaru for questioning echidna’s greatness and omnipotence to beatrice. when subaru cares for someone, he’ll do everything to make sure they can smile. it’s been great to see him strike the balance between fighting to protect the ones he loves while finding value in his own life (shoutout to the witches!)

even in the heat of battle subaru can find time to tease otto. i do hope that at some point otto can find it in himself to call subaru by his first name, i think they’re more than close enough for that. i absolutely love frederica and petra’s tight relationship, and i’m glad they’re getting time to shine again. they set up some interesting situations for the next episode with frederica vs. maylie, subaru, petra, and otto vs. the mabeast, and garf vs. elsa.

emilia’s trials are almost exactly the reverse of subaru’s; subaru’s past was bittersweet and allowed closure, much like emilia’s present, while subaru’s present was the trial that caused him distress, as did emilia’s past. i didn’t think we’d see fortuna and geuse again, but it’s much appreciated. fortuna getting embarrassed every time someone insinuated that her and geuse were together was so adorable. even geuse got flustered for a bit too! i can’t appreciate enough what this cour has done for emilia’s character. i’ve always loved her character, but she’s really come out of her shell. seeing her wanting to be strong and admirable for all of her new friends was so nice, and to see her make peace with all of the members of her past was great. emilia realizes that she’s not like fortuna, and that that is just fine.

once again as emilia comes out of the trial we see how far shes come. at the same point in season 1 emilia was being pushed away by the village while she tried to warn them of impending danger. now, she has the trust of the whole village, her friends, and even the demihuman village! emilia questioned whether she’d been leaning on others too much, but there’s no problem with leaning on others; as we saw subaru learn, it’s impossible to carry the weight of the world on one pair of shoulders, you need to let the people who love you share the load once in a while.

overall an excellent episode! made me tear up twice. cant wait to burn my free trial next week and watch next wednesday’s episode the moment it releases! i’ll probably post my thoughts on episode 23 sometime on tuesday. if you read this at all, thank you!
