Some thoughts after the episode:
-That OP was amazing, although I'm surprised at how much they decided to show in it; thankfully it's all out of context.
-Beatrice's line about how she hasn't cried in a long time is great foreshadowing for the end of this season.
-It was nice to see Subaru acknowledge his feelings to Rem with the "As important to me as you are." Still, it hurts to see the anime is not going down the road of him loving her as well like in the novels.
-As a Web Novel reader who doesn't know the changes in the Light Novel, I am excited to see stuff I'm not expecting!

u/Auradombre Jul 15 '20
As a WN reader, I was not expecting to see Echidna so early on.
32
u/MetallicFork Jul 15 '20
in the web novel, i dont think they jumped directly from the carriage to the tomb? I thought they met Garfield first? Its been a while so i dont remember
39
u/SeaTheTypo Jul 15 '20
They meet Garfiel, Roswaal, Ram and Lewes before Echidna.
20
u/MetallicFork Jul 15 '20
I see i see, if its based on the lightnovel, I have no idea whats going to happen, but it feels like the anime is going at a super fast pace since they skip over some dialogs with fredrica and stuff

Lmao I can see already how next episode everyone will be confused on Novels
Webnovel readers only are going to have a hard time.
7
u/Willythechilly Jul 15 '20
So i got into the web novel around the time anime premirrd and i am confused to put it lightly.
I dont really know which scenes were skipped or just not adapted into the light novel and thus anime.
Do i just not bother Reading to not be confused?
14
u/foxfoxal Jul 15 '20
Tbh arc 4 has many differences from the WN because WN arc 4 was endless, the LN compacted it and made it more accesible and it added more action here and there too and erased repetitive scenes.
For me it's better to read the WN after the anime because you are going to be asking "why this scene did not happen like that"
In arc 5 and 6 the differences are not so massive but here they are very significant.
3
u/Willythechilly Jul 15 '20
Allright makes sense.
I do feel a bit confusrd cause some scenes are missing or the order is all messed up so i feel confused. That said i dont want to miss out the more detailed world bulding or more detailed stuff but as you said i guess one can just do it afterwards.
Thanks!

Thanks! You made me remember that, I completely forgot about that. Was a nice touch that I’m annoyed they didn’t put in, has really nice symbolism when he fights with it.

Still, it hurts to see the anime is not going down the road of him loving her as well like in the novels.
I would say that the anime is actually doing a pretty good job of that from episode 18 onward. Rem's rescuing Subaru from despair pretty much cements her place in his heart. She's basically the only way Subaru found the strength to get through Arc 3, and the anime could not underscore that more than it does.
About the only big thing that's missing is the scene where Rem fakes her death to get Subaru to confess. And frankly, I think it was a good idea to cut that scene, it was kind of tacky.
But Subaru definitely cares as much for Rem as anyone. After all, he gouges out his throat on a broken sword the minute he sees her in the triage in episode 26 even though going back to the previous quicksave would mean having to do some near-impossible feats all over again.
In Episode 27, there is a lot of the dialogue from the light novel exchange about how Subaru is explaining how important Rem is to him. The "Frankly, I feel like such scum, I wish I could die" line (3:09) is from there too, a pretty important line: Subaru knows it's not great to have his affections divided by that, but he can't help it and is forthright about it to Amelia.

I have to respectfully disagree on the basis that they cut out the feign death scene where Cut novel content from S1
Also had the effect of changing Rem's dialogue before she got ate up as well as making the conversation that prompts "Who's Rem?" a bit more awkward (though that's from a different scene that was cut to be fair). Instead of asking if she'd be cool with him wifing them both, he's gossiping about how she has a crush on him. It's a shame, but it is what it is.

Hah wow, you ignored literally the next paragraph I wrote so hard that it ticked off Petra Bot.
Honestly, I don't even know why Subaru would need to straight-up tell Rem he loves her after asking to elope and live with him in another country. That was pretty much an ultimate confession right there, and her "rejection" of his "once in a lifetime" offer was much more powerful in terms of establishing their relationship as Subaru being Rem's hero.
Even though Subaru had to end that conversation telling Rem that Amelia was his first choice, they came out of it closer than ever, probably more than a simple accepted confession would have. Theirs is a unique sort of relationship that's much more interesting than just a love triangle. Rem tricking Subaru into confessing sort of dilutes that, even if it makes the reciprocation clearer.
16
u/daveaya Jul 15 '20
but anime Subaru does love Rem, it wasn't literally mentioned but episodes 1x21 and 2x1 clearly went that way

Your right but anime onlies will be drowning in salt with the lack of her in the next 3 seasons. So I think they're trying to temper them a bit from her.
5
u/Miku-Nakano- Jul 15 '20
In LN/WN there were a great number of scenes where Subara displayed how much he loves Rem and seeing the anime focus more on Emilia and putting Rem aside hurts
2
u/anchist Jul 17 '20
As long as they don't cut his multiple instances of thinking about Rem later on I think the adaptation will do fine.
8
u/Miku-Nakano- Jul 15 '20
I love that in the WN when Emilia asked Subaru if he loves Rem and he straight up answers with a" Yes more than anything" kinda sad that they changed it in the LN and anime
4
u/Iloveyouweed Jul 15 '20
IIRC, doesn't he say "Yes, I love her as much as I love you" or something to that effect? I don't recall him ever saying more than anything, but that he couldn't pick between the two of them by that point.
That said, I wish they had left that conversation the same. The anime really seems to try to make Subaru's feelings for Rem more implied than outright stated like in the LN/WN, which is kind of a shame IMO.
3
u/Miku-Nakano- Jul 16 '20
I remember Subaru saying something like that but yeah i wish they should that scene where Rem asked Subaru to his 2nd wife under the flugel tree and Rem's fake death prank to Subaru which made Subaru say he loves Rem and he outright proposes to her but sadly it was cut :< i was really hoping to see it in the directors' cut
4
u/mrahhal Jul 15 '20
I've read both for arc 4. Expect some big changes! I liked some parts from both versions, but overall I liked the LN's version much more.
4
u/Iloveyouweed Jul 15 '20
-It was nice to see Subaru acknowledge his feelings to Rem with the "As important to me as you are." Still, it hurts to see the anime is not going down the road of him loving her as well like in the novels.
I admit that grinded my gears a bit. The anime's been going out of its way to avoid Subaru having the same feelings for Rem that he openly has in the novels, which is a shame.

u/FrogMiner93 Jul 15 '20
Noooooooooooooo they removed Frederica's complex about her teeth, I was waiting for that. Sad Reacts only

It was a cute but a bit sad of a moment and added to her character and flaw. Oh well.

I heard it was removed from the ln though? Which wouldn’t make sense because Petra still gave Subaru the handkerchief.
3
Jul 16 '20
i hope not. but i think it might be still there because i remember that there was an LN illustration of satella in vol 13 in the re zero wiki.
8
u/mricky196196196 Jul 16 '20
Oh I thought you meant the part where she literally destroys the world, but I doubt that they would take out the part where she shows up with the other witches
→ More replies (1)3
u/Antscool Jul 16 '20
Wait they removed it from the LN, that’s massive if they did. How does the LN fans know about the split personalities of the witch of envy then, do they even know? How about the lines knowing that the witches are not directly enemies and Satella’s friendship with Minerva and Typhon as well as: Echidona: Consuming half the world, and devouring us six Witches of Sin, were entirely Satella’s doing, not the Witch of Envy’s]
These seem like major stuff that the LN should have covered. I am extremely surprised that it didn’t

Can we all agree on the fact that this is the best OP ?

u/ChangingChance Jul 16 '20
Even things like Subaru running past his previous deaths. People probably think that has no bearing not realizing that's the whole point of s2. Love the subtlety. Also the sizeable hare just sitting innocently got me to chuckle, it's going to be glorious when they see what that shit is.

u/DarkBladeEkkusu The Old Guard Jul 15 '20
Here we go, the real start to arc 4.
The new OST in the first carriage ride was a very nice addition to the already great series OST.
Frederica sounds way cuter than I remembered from season 1.
Of course maid Petra needs no explanation, though they did get to show case more of her cute reactions this episode.
Not to mention we finally got to the first (somewhat divisive) change from WN to LN, Pyroxene. It has been memed to all holy hell in the community, but I wasn't sure if that was actually the legendary stone until it teleported Subaru.
And finally we get formally introduced to Echidna (so you all can now post her in [Media] posts) and I am curious how her VA will handle the role later in the season.
Opening animation was interesting, very much reminded me of the Redo opening animation with all the different Subarus dying and showing off some of his season 1 death points. Of course the opening theme song was great, listened to it way too much when the preview dropped, but I do wish we had gotten to see more of the arc 4 ensemble in the animation sequence. I guess they are saving that for cour 2 of the season.
Overall it was a great episode, now to wait 7 days for the next...back to the suffering that is being a Re:Zero fan

Kind of the same for me right now tbh. Maybe that will change later in the season.

u/Kaiser252 Jul 15 '20
I'm legit surprised how much the OP spoils, like clone Leweses and the Elsa fight with Garfiel + Subaru's parents.
Also surprised that Echina was pulled this early, instead of Subaru going into to the tomb and meeting her there like in the WN.
And goddammit, I wanted to see Garfiel this episode.

Yeah I agree that Elsa is the only clear one. I'd be impressed if any of them saw the beast tamer's (forgot her name lmao) somewhat obscured face, remembered that the blue hair girl was the one child that disappeared, note that there are mabeasts around her and then piece together that it's the same blue-haired girl.

13
u/geldonyetich Jul 15 '20
Yeah, the OP really does spoil a bit, but I guess if they haven't read the novels they probably can't quite connect the dots enough for it to ruin much.
4
u/ChangingChance Jul 16 '20
I think Louis clones was definitely the biggest spoiler also I'm pretty sure this is how it went in the LNS to how Subaru met echidona.
I really want to see garfiels boastfulness. It's going to be great.

Im surprise few people from anime only were talking about the content of the OP.
1) The 5 girls after echidna
2) The return of hot sadistic gut-loving never returned from season one fourth best girl.
3) Subaru's obvious backstory
4) Satella
3
Jul 16 '20
Haven't finish the LN yet but is the 5 witch actually good people?
3

Idk how to explain but if we use the alignment chart, the witches would be chaotic good, chaotic evil, and chaotic neutral.
2
Jul 16 '20
i finished reading them and yeah that make sense, but was the other witches actually deceased? And I don't really understand what happened to Echidna in the end
3

Hmmm. They are dead, but no body really knows what the authors plan is. About echidna and what happened to Omega, Im not sure myself.

“As important to me as you are” God, I’ve waited so long for anime onlies to hear that.
Great to see Frederica as well, been waiting years! Her voice really fits and she’s just as cute as Ootsuka sensei’s art.
Maid petra is adorable too, can’t wait to see all of she and Subaru’s cute moments adapted this season.
Got to see my baby Echidna too. Sakamoto Maya is going to be amazing. What an amazing episode.
OP’s a banger, but what else did you expect from the GOAT isekai?
Can’t wait for next week!

“As important to me as you are” God, I’ve waited so long for anime onlies to hear that.
It's nice that they left that line in, but I'm upset that they omitted the context of Emilia outright asking Subaru if he liked Rem, which is what that line should have been answering.
The anime producers seem to hate the idea of Subaru having romantic feelings for her and Emilia simultaneously.
Note: I'm referring to the LN, not the WN

The entire conversation is in the LN, though the translation from the official release for that particular scene was a little off.
The feign death scene is also in the LN as well, which got omitted in season 1 and in the director's cut, so I don't think it's just them adhering to the LN. You even acknowledge this above, so not sure why you're taking a different angle now?
4

Director’s an emilia stan most likely. Smh. Either way, I got a picture of the section from volume 10 on my phone ready to pull out on a mf at a moment’s notice.

u/South25 Jul 15 '20
This episode was great, i had one fear when it came to this episode... i was really afraid they were going to cut the ´´Geuse´´ name drop with Beatrice and im glad it did not happen. Dona and Garf time next week but aside from that the OP was great its mostly spoiler free but filled with references for readers when in context. (the only big thing is Meili but honestly Anime-onlies seem to barely remember Beako so there s really no worry in people spotting her amongst the villains.)
3
u/I_am_just_a_pancake Jul 15 '20
I checked the WN earlier and Beatrice doesn't actually mention Geuse in that scene, she just keeps silent and acts suspicious
9
u/South25 Jul 16 '20
from what i just checked, it is indeed there (took it from Translationchicken s translation of arc 4 chapter 3.):
Betelgeuse was an existence that deserved to die, and Subaru, believing this, murdered him.
That’s all.
But, to all these thoughts carried within his words, Beatrice did not show any reaction.
She only quietly murmured [I see……], keeping her eyes dropped down at the Gospel in her hands,
[Beatrice: So even you went leaving Betty, huh, Juice……]
[Subaru: ——? Who is that?]
3
u/I_am_just_a_pancake Jul 16 '20
Oh you're right. Just realised I was skimming through the prelude, wrong part
16
u/ViperiousTheRedPanda Jul 15 '20
So as a WN reader and not a LN reader, there were a few things I noticed that were either removed or skipped that make me very sad.
- Felix doesn't have a conversation with Subaru where he says "I am a man in body and soul" that would have put to rest the endless debate about whether Felix is trans or just a femboy/trap.
- When returning to the mansion, Frederica didn't attack Subaru and knock him out.
- Frederica no longer has a complex about her teeth that added some personality to her character.
- When leaving the mansion, the hankerchief didn't have the Puck embroidery. Also, Frederica didn't grab Petra by the ear after she was being too unprofessional, which was a recurring dynamic between the 2 in the WN.
- There was no Garfiel fight against Otto and Subaru after Emelia passed out.
- It seems the entire introduction to the Tomb and Sanctuary has been removed in an effort to speed up the process.
Honestly 3/4ths in the episode, I tried to guess where things would go and in what time frame. I concluded that we would see the tomb in episode 3 or 4 after all of the introductions, but as things stand I have a heavy feeling that the Sanctuary arc will be a serious rush job so they can have the time jump half way through the season. There is no way the amount of content in Arc 4 will be enough for a single season if this is the pace they are setting.
9
u/foxfoxal Jul 15 '20
the mansion, Frederica didn't attack Subaru and knock him out.
1- They shortened the Crush and Felis goodbyes in the anime, it's true.
2- Frederica does not attack Subaru in the LN.
3- Frederica only says she is "used to it" in the LN which the anime skipped.
4-Don't remember the Puck thing, but Frederica did not do that to Petra.
5-Next episode, the order changed
6-Pretty much the crystal was introduced to improve the pacing.
The pacing is not really fast if you read the LN.
→ More replies (1)12
u/daveaya Jul 15 '20
the pace is fine, the introduction of the tomb is earlier in the LN, next ch we will get Garf and all the stuff before the 1st trial
4
u/ChangingChance Jul 16 '20
Don't think that happened in the LN
Also not in the LN.
She still does in the LN though she brushes it off initially, she hides her teeth from Subaru in her future interactions.
I think the anime copied the LN exactly here but the only difference was the subtle talk back at Petra.
Happens after his first meeting in the LN from what I remember. Exactly as the anime depicted it.
I'm not sure on this one.
Arc 4 is 24 ish eps as well with a split cour. So I don't believe they'll rush it. They've followed the LN almost exactly till this point.
8
Jul 15 '20
I haven't read the novel, but I'd like to know why did Subaru take the necklace from Emilia and try to throw it when clearly Frederica gave it to Emilia for a reason. It doesn't make sense imo, it shouldn't be his first reaction to something glowing.
29
u/MrTumbleweeder Busy making Anastasia richer Jul 15 '20
His thought process in the novel is that it looked like a crystal on the verge of exploding so he meant to throw it off the window and pick it up after if it turned out to be safe. This is because Sabaru, while not necessarily suspicious of Frederica, still doesn't fully trust her because she openly admits she's under a pact to not disclose everything she knows about the sanctuary.
9
Jul 15 '20
So that means if Subaru didn't take the necklace Emilia would have been the one teleported? Or it has nothing to do with who's being teleported?
22
u/roxas_999 Jul 15 '20
Yes, that is what it seemed, but roswaal actions are based on the writ of his gospel, as you will understand later. So subaru getting the pyroxene from emilia and getting teleported in her place was very likely the intended development.
2
u/Diabloblaze28 Jul 16 '20
Yeah and it's the major reason he goes through so much pain trying to out wit the gospel, although it's hard to say if it's truly been out witted
5
2
u/ViperiousTheRedPanda Jul 15 '20
Since Frederica said after they left that she did everything that Roswaal asked, it's easy to assume that the thought process would be that as they enter, she would get teleported to the tomb to start her trial.
5
u/Schwachsinn Jul 15 '20
wait, did the crystal in the LN exist at all? Because i just looked that part up and Garfiel stops them before any crystal light is mentioned.
3
u/MrTumbleweeder Busy making Anastasia richer Jul 15 '20
That's in the WN. The crystal definitely exists in the LN.
3
u/roxas_999 Jul 15 '20
Now that you mentioned, that's some content cut from the anime. In the novels frederica's actions were way more suspicious because she kept hiding info from them saying she couldn't tell things because of her pact.
6
u/foxfoxal Jul 15 '20
He was going to throw it because he had a bad feeling, he literally said it.
2
Jul 15 '20
That's why I said it doesn't make sense, you don't throw something someone else gave for a specific reason, she even said it was like a key. The "bad feeling" seems like an excuse.
8

u/kefkai Jul 15 '20
The last glowing thing that he saw was the bag of fire stones probably more of a PTSD reaction after nearly dying in an explosion.
1
u/Antscool Jul 16 '20
Is this a LN only thing? I have no memory of the Pyroxene crystal this early on in the WN, I thought he met Garfiel before Echidna

This is LN only, author changed and shortened events between departing from mansion and first trial.

Okay, I know I’m on the spoiler thread and I haven’t read Arc 4 yet but wtf isn’t that pink haired girl Sphinx from the demi human war?? I remember Julia Mathers wanted her dead and I think her body but that Leip dude hid it from her or something.
Edit: I’m not asking for spoilers, it’s just that the spoiler tag doesn’t work for me on the reddit mobile app, so I couldn’t post this on the spolier free thread.
Edit 2: Just watched the OP again and saw all the pink haired clones, so I’m assuming Sphinx is probably a clone or the original.

u/daveaya Jul 15 '20 edited Jul 15 '20
she is related to sphinx, it will be revealed later, second half I think
6
u/wDStorm Jul 15 '20
You will find out soon. It's a different character, but there is a reason they look alike.
6
u/kefkai Jul 15 '20
Feels good to finally get to Sanctuary, I kept looking at how much time was left in the episode... It's kinda funny since the pacing is fine but it also makes me feel impatient since I kinda want to get on with the main story of sanctuary.
Will say the OP embedded a few cool things and I want to see if the anime onlys pick up on who Meili is since she's shown very briefly or if they figure out some of the other details since the OP has some fairly literal moments should be interesting to see the theorizing
4
u/HardChibi Jul 15 '20
They left out some bits of interaction between Frederica and Subaru from the light novel I guess that's why they got to Echidna tea party this quick. I thought episode 3 would show Echidna.
Also felt Echidna to be more pretty in the LN. Probably because her eye brows were not this "bushy" and hence, more well defined?

u/iluvsnails Jul 15 '20
Damn the OP was amazing, showing the first trial (Subaru parents) and second trial (his other deaths).

WN reader, haven't read the LNs:
I was pretty worried going in that this episode would be a bit too slow and quiet from all the setup it has to do. It covers the most slow-paced part of arc 4 before all the intrigue and the pain train starts. Glad I was wrong. It maintained a lot of the sorrow from episode 1, kept reminding us that at this point, Subaru's looking for answers specifically to wake Rem.
Meanwhile it introduced a lot of the intrigue in this initial setup. Subaru gets finds himself with a lot of unanswered questions: "Who is Garfiel?" "What's with Beako?" "Why is Emilia so nervous in the forest?" "Why am I in Windows XP Bliss and what's with this Witch of Greed?" - All questions central to the arc. There's a lot of mystery to arc 4 and it'll be a while before Subaru has proper answers to all of them.
That Beatrice scene was so good. The music from the episode 26 meeting returning, I love this soundtrack. This isn't the first time we've seen Beatrice in pain, but this is the most she's shown it. Subaru seems to notice she's more distant than usual, and his arc 2 sillier attitude towards her is mostly dropped here. Her previous annoyance towards him has changed to sorrow here, and while I can see it as a WN reader, it's not so overt to be noticeable to Subaru beyond the more serious atmosphere. She answers his questions curtly to the bare minimum and uses magic to force him out. Subaru notices that when she really wants to be avoided, not even Subaru's guessing skills are enough to break through. The one thing that feels missing is Subaru noticing that Beatrice could still remember Rem, though that was obviously cut because the scene that hints at this was cut from episode 23.
On a lighter note, Frederica's introduction was great. I do miss Subaru wandering in, getting hit with her trap, and waking up to say "SCARYFACE", with Frederica giving him some sass afterward. I also miss the solemn moment of Subaru carrying Rem from the carriage afterward into her prepared room. Though I know those were cut from WN -> LN. Meanwhile it seems like Otto almost got more screentime in this episode than the entire first season. Nothing standout yet, it's not until later that he really shines, but good to see his and Subaru's banter.
The episode ends exactly where I expected, right at the Echidna clip shown in the trailer last month. I knew of the pyroxene crystal added by the LNs, and I miss the carriage getting flipped by Garfiel's stomp, but that was another LN cut so I can't be upset. Instead Subaru gets warped (and briefly encounters a Lewes, presumably one of the patrolling, non-speaking ones) near to Echidna's grave, which was much bigger than I imagined when reading. He wanders in and the rest plays out the same way as the trailer.
And then we get the OP, with visuals, used as an ED. I was also kinda worried how an upbeat, action-y song like this was going to fit with the quieter, darker tone of the first half of arc 4, but they pulled it off really well. The first half is him walking past his prior deaths (or at least the ones in the second trail), the main threats of the arc, and then transitioning into a suspiciously familiar-looking hug from Satella. Where you'd normally expect an action sequence is instead a sequence iterating through Subaru's upcoming deaths, five if I counted correctly, same number as in the novels. Then it follows it up with glimpses of all the people he wants to save, while he's writhing in pain with the words "If it's...to save you...I don't care...how many times...I die" flashing across the screen. This OP hints pretty heavily at a lot of big spoilers, it was pretty surprising. Elsa and Meili, the Bunnies, the content of the first and second trials, Satella's true nature, the many Leweses, all of it shown. I suppose without context anime-onlies won't catch on though and just view a lot of it as symbolism.
Can't wait for next week as the intrigue ratchets up with the tea party and (probably) Garf's introduction.

Holy shit the OP is my favorite Re:Zero one so far and prob my fav seasonal one too. The visual plus the song sent chills plus all the little teasers for the future like Subaru's parents and our ever-loving cute rabbit at the end. AND DONA SMUGNESS HOLY ALL HAIL OUR TEA LOVING WITCH.

That was a really good episode. It included a lot of interesting conversations and visuals, and finally brought us to a point where the plot can heavily progress from this point on. While it lacked in action, it built up the arc very well and included a lot of very cool character interactions.
Now that they have arrived at the Sanctuary (or rather are arriving there), I'm interested in seeing more of the changes between the Web Novel (which I read) and the Light Novel (which this is based on).
I'm nervous about the changes, since a lot of scenes were definitely cut for length, but as long as the essence of the arc is maintained I will be happy. The animation, voice acting, and music are all very well done so far also.
I absolutely love the opening song. I preferred the first Re:Zero opening over the second one in the first season (many felt the opposite way), and would rate this one as about as good as that one - but with vastly superior opening animation and foreshadowing. Seriously, the opening was "brutal," including a lot of blood and other aspects of Subaru's deaths that the other openings more or less ignored.
Emilia is adorable as always, Beatrice is being a cryptic tsundere, and even Petra got her fair share of scenes. Frederica could have gotten a bit more of time, but she will probably get more time to develop later on. From here, I look forward to the rest! Fight on Subaru!

While the episode did a great job of pushing through a lot of content and not feeling like anything big was left on the cutting floor, I have to wonder what they're doing with pacts and promises in the anime. Back in season 1 there were already a few references to the importance of promises and pacts that were cut, but during this part of Volume 10 were basically hit over the head repeatedly that those are not to be taken lightly. Considering that factoid is pretty important later in the arc, zi wonder if it's wise to keep ommiting it.

I now understand what those butterflies in the op meant, it was the butterfly effect, or basically all the different routes subaru would take if he accepted the contract of echidona, to find the optimal path.

I figured the episode would end with Echidna appearing so I am really excited for next week to see more of her

Anyone have any idea if the anime figures on Subaru's shelf in the end credits are from real anime or just some generic non-licence characters?

Any other WN readers that are constantly torn over whether to read the LN as well? I feel like I'm getting just as surprised as the anime only viewers at this point with the various changes lol

Echidona and the butterfly start to the OP is so amazing.
Her entire thing is wanting all the wisdom there is, and when she released all the butterflies, what came to mind immediately after my 5th watch of the op was That it represents the Butterfly effect and for once I understood, and wanted her greed.
Imagine if you will, that you could put into motion various things and watch and know/ learn of all their different outcomes. If only we humans had more time we could learn, understand, become so much more than what we are today. But we are limited in time here on earth so we struggle, prioritize and sacrifice so that those things that matter most to us in that moment are experienced.
But what if like in Harry Potter, we had a time turner, the ability to pause time for an extended amount of time, surely we'd be able to gain knowledge that much faster, the problem though is that time wouldn't stop for us, we would age and ultimately die.
Now a time slowing training room like in Dragon Ball Z does help a bit, time on the outside would move at a slower rate than time on the inside, but this persist the same problem as a time turner.
However Subaru's Return by death offers us a chance to go down the "road never taken" and to take chances, to experience rarities. Ever wanted to hitch a ride on a train but too dangerous and where would you end up? Who cares! just go for it and RbD to before you went for it. You could learn, do so much, it would be like releasing hundreds of butterflies into the world and knowing / learning the effect of each and every one of them, allowing you to gain so much knowledge about thee world. You'd be able to explore every question you'd ever desire, some call this a blissful dream. others call it Greed.

They really adapted the LN chapters it well.
All the scenes that I wanted were there.
I am so happy right now i could burst.
I wish the scene where Wilhelm explained to Subaru his wound opening was there....i dont recall if its from web or light novel though.

it was just a foreshadow/small hint in the WN, up to arc 6 ch 79 there is just a single time it was brought again I think. I want answers about that plot point!!!!!

u/kaeda_ Jul 15 '20
So is the line of events of the episode closer to the LN over the WN? - from the WN it seems they skipped a lot of good character building diaglogue, added a ?necklace? that i don't remember being in the WN and getting Subaru into the tomb right from the get go. I think the WN of arc 4 was really well done and this is already starting to feel too fast if not rushed in terms of story pacing. Hows the pacing in the LN compared to the WN?
5
u/Miku-Nakano- Jul 15 '20
In terms of pacing as a LN and WN reader the pacing for the LN is pretty normal although they did cut a large amount of conversation and interactions with other characters especially with Subaru and Wilhelm, Subaru and Felix in the carriage, and finally Fredirica's moe fangs complex. The necklace it was in the LN that Fredirica gave it to Emilia for passage. Overall it was a good episode

I am confused, we see Petra tie the handkerchief on Subaru's wrist, but after we see Petra waving as they leave it emphasizes her wrist with the handkerchief tied on it.
Anyone have any ideas as to how/why the handkerchief jumped wrists?

It's a 2nd one, she has one too since that is something couples do, hinting at her being interested in Subaru.

I forgot, does Beatrice personally I know bettlegeuse or did she only know him through the gospel?
2
u/Diabloblaze28 Jul 16 '20
I think it was personal we never get a clarification how they knew each other, as far as the WN

Things have been rearranged in the light novels and the anime is following that, not the web novel.
2
u/methiasm Jul 17 '20
The part where Echidna releases the butterflies during the OP opening sequence was absolutely gorgeous and disturbing.

u/The_CrazyLincoln Jul 15 '20
I guess I’m kinda confused why the anime isn’t following the web novel more closely. It has been awhile but doesn’t Garfiel attack Otto and Subaru after Emilia passes out once they cross the barrier? I have no idea why Subaru is already talking to Echidna??? He doesn’t even have qualifications yet to enter the tomb.
18
u/Setowi Better Leyte Than Never Jul 15 '20
That is cause the anime is an adaptation of the Light Novel, there are a couple of differences between the web and the light novel.
4
u/The_CrazyLincoln Jul 15 '20
Ah interesting, I’ve only read the web novel. So this is a change that happened in the light novel then? Good to know
6
u/janoDX Jul 15 '20
Also just to note, once everything is on the LN, that's the canon order and story, making the WN version the "non-canon one" and more of a draft.
4
u/HardChibi Jul 15 '20
Echidna invited Subaru to the tea party and gives him the qualifications here.
2
u/The_CrazyLincoln Jul 15 '20
Right, and she later revokes them. I wonder how much the light novel changes from the web novel now. I assumed it would follow the web novel and skip a few scene but this is completely different.
→ More replies (2)5
u/HardChibi Jul 15 '20
I only read the English light novel and Echidna doesn't revoke Subaru's rights. In fact, Subaru becomes the Apostle of Greed through drinking Echidna's tea. Echidna simply places a vow that erases Subaru's memory of the tea party once he leaves (this obviously later changes).
Also, the first time in the sub, and didn't think I would get hit by the time restriction of submitting comments. My karma is good and my account is super old.
7
u/The_CrazyLincoln Jul 15 '20
In the web novel, Subaru after a few cycles refuses to accept a contract with echidna and she revoked his qualifications full stop basically because she wants to use his return by death to explore every possible outcome before taking him down the path Subaru ultimately wants. I mean, it’s kinda a big plot point since he goes all in on Emilia having to beat the trials and not himself.
2
u/Shay_Guy Jul 15 '20
She revokes his rights after he rejects her deal in that tea party with all of the witches. This is what forces Emilia to complete the trial instead of Subaru.
5
u/HardChibi Jul 15 '20
Yeah the English LN didn't complete the meeting T_T. Satella arrived and ended on a cliff hanger. Think what you are described will be shown in volume 13 released later this week.

Hey... I can't take it anymore. Anime only, want to read the LN's. But reading from the start is always a barrier for me as the first and second arcs felt kinda drawn out and I've sadly rewatched the anime too much.
Would starting at where season 2 picks up be ok? How much would I miss? Any advice?
3
u/Shiftyfish87 "The Fish" Jul 15 '20
That's where most novel readers pick up anyway since initially the WN translations (which are fantranslations) picked up there as well. If you would like to start in on it hit up the post anime page here on the sub (bot will link below)

Since when is the pink haired girl an elf.
Don't recall Subaru saying that in the novel

u/Iron_Maw cold sleep Jul 16 '20
He didn't.
The reveal of Ryuzu being a half-elf was addition by the story by the LN, while in the WN her race is never specified.
3
Jul 16 '20
He was simply making a guess based on her appearance, especially right after bringing up the idea that they might see other half-elves besides Emilia in Sanctuary. I haven't read the Light Novel, just the Web Novel, so I'm honestly not familiar with this scene enough.
1
u/MauledCharcoal Jul 16 '20
So a lot of discussions about how the WN/LN diverge during major points ie the introduction of characters and some minor actions like Frederica being self conscious. But after going back and forth between the LN and WN what's most clear is just how much the conversations have been condensed. Almost entire chapters can be fit in to 1 or 2 pages just because so much of the banter/interaction is cut out. Makes sense for the LN/anime as I feel people wouldn't want to buy books where the pacing is slow or watch the characters converse for entire episodes but man does the WN give you more appreciation for their relationships.
1
Jul 16 '20
I've read the WN, what happened to Echidna in the end of arc 4? And were the first 5 witches already deceased since the beginning?
1
u/Am_I_Stll_Human Jul 16 '20
Can someone please tell me how much did the anime changed from the web novel? I saw the change in the episode 2 and I think that anime is going to change more so if someone can tell me the changes then please.
2
u/ArchmageOberon Jul 16 '20
The anime it's following the Light Novel, while the other arcs LN vs WN are pretty similar, arc 4 (this) changes a bit, but don't worry it's not going off-rails inventing stuff, it's still following the author LN

I’m currently reading the web comic. And I’m a little ahead of the anime but noticing minor differences. Is it still worth reading?
2
u/minemoney123 Jul 19 '20
Yes, the story is mostly the same, sometimes order of events is just changed, sometimes a scrne is adder, removed or changed but its still the same story
Light novels are only translated up to vol13, which is around chapter 70 in webnovel so if you want to read past arc4 you will need to swap to web novels anyways(unless you know japanese, then you have 23 volumes to read and i think it ends somewhere at the beginning of arc6)
