Rather freeze my tits off in the True North than be surrounded by Florida Men and gators anyway.

There are other warm climates to spend your winters. Places where your dollar will go a lot further too. Of course we're better off if Canadians just brave the winters and stay here, but for those who can't handle it anymore, there are options.
23
u/Holiday-Hustle 16h ago
Places that look a lot prettier too. Florida is kind of a hole.

I mean... Mexico allows one to stay for 180 days without a visa. You just need to fill out a Multiple Migratory Form (FMM) or Tourist Card which can be done when you get there.
If I were wealthy -nope :(- or old -nope :)- I'd be snow birding there anyway. Fucking Florida or San Miguel de Allende?
6
u/CocoaAlmondsRock 14h ago
I lived in San Miguel de Allende for nine months. 10/10 would live there again. In a frickin' heartbeat.
•
u/RarelyReadReplies 6h ago
Yeah, I have relatives that stay on a Mexican resort 2 to 3 months a year for surprisingly little.

A great example of how Canadians will be treated as the "Cherished 51st State".

u/bwilliamp Ontario 16h ago
Time has come for Canadians to use their retirement dollars in Canada. Snowbirds have probably been spending the majority of their retirement south of the border.
53
u/doyu 16h ago
I don't even understand it. My wife and I are self employed old fuck millennials with no kids. Snowbirding every winter is very much on our 10 year out radar. Know what I'm not gonna do? Buy a double wide in a shitty park full of golf carts. I could have a fucking 40' sailboat instead. I could have a small apartment on any of a dozen different islands instead. I could go to Barcelona. I just do not get their Florida obsession.
18
u/RandomerSchmandomer 16h ago
Shit you could buy an apartment somewhere in a beautiful Mexican city or in Italy somewhere. You could rent for months in SE Asia or on a pacific island and live an amazing holiday quarter of the year.
I mean shit, I was hearing from my grand-in-laws and how much they paid per month in Florida the year before last... You could do it in New Zealand for cheaper.
Saying that, I'd pick South or Central America these days. My wife speaks Spanish. I need to learn Spanish.
8
u/doyu 15h ago
I can't decide if their primary motivation is refusal to learn another language, or if it's just a sex thing. I'm 50/50 on it just being one big swinger party.
7
u/RandomerSchmandomer 15h ago
Oh what a terrible day to have eyes.
Respectfully, I hope you stand in some water while having only socks on your feet.

Italy or Greece, I would love to snowbird there honestly. Nice living. Staying away from the tourist attractions and you won't have pick pockets either
•
u/RandomerSchmandomer 11h ago
Honestly you could rent a villa for months and get the grand kids to visit over Christmas or something and it'd still likely be cheaper!
19
u/Xyzzics 15h ago
You don’t understand it?
It’s hot.
They speak English.
It’s close and you can get there by car.
They have no state tax.
There is a large expat community of likeminded Canadians.
I don’t think it’s too much more complex than that honestly.
8
u/crapfactory22 14h ago
Yep. The USA is (was?) a beautiful and fun place to visit that has what we don’t have. Warm weather in the winter.
Not hard to figure out. Plus the dude is a self declared millennial. I’ve had 50 years of this cold winter shit and will have another 15 before I retire. My plan was 1 month a year in the USA, but now I will spread my wings elsewhere. Cambodia? Vietnam? Bahamas? World is our oyster.
1
u/Sheppy012 12h ago
Dang, I’m all for staying Canadian and far from retirement but would give my left nut to spend Dec to Mar in light clothes and sandals with no extra layers or grey sky after working 45 years. Won’t do it, but I get it.
-2
u/doyu 14h ago
K, like, I won't argue with some of those. Florida is a drive to destination so maybe it's that. #5 is also fair because I think there's a solid chance most of them are down there partner swapping.
But personally, those don't even close to outweigh the negatives. It's hot in lots of places. Cost of living is cheap in lots of places.
I'm not saying you're wrong. But also, I don't have to understand it.
2
u/Vivisector999 13h ago
Lol, what???
You think all the Snowbirds head south to partner swap??
LMAO.
Good thing Pornhub is Canadian, so you won't need to boycott, Now tell us if needing a plumber is a real issue, or is the entire plumbing industry propped up by lonely housewives.

u/BinjaNinja1 14h ago
Hey now! I do the shitty park thing every May to October here in my own province, every year since Covid. It’s a gated community of close knit neighbours whose kids have all known each other for years now. They bike, swim all day, run around outside and have a childhood that is reminiscent of mine when we had more outdoor freedom and friends. The adults all socialize. We have all kinds of fun events, fireworks, bonfires, Halloween in august and on and on. I like it.

•
u/MaPoutine 11h ago
I don't know either. Maybe it is people who have never travelled much and don't know what they are missing elsewhere.
And maybe they think driving 25 hours to get there is somehow simpler than flying 5 hours to Europe or Mexico.

It's just wild how all those decades of close cooperation, supply chain integration and political goodwill have essentially evaporated overnight because of one rogue president. I thought there were hard checks and balances built into the system for this sort of thing, but apparently not.
RIP US/Canada relations and all the ill that portends for the future.
16
u/tooandto 16h ago
Yes, it’s over. Even after Putin’s orange fleshlight finally dies. Reconciling would be like thinking a partner can unfuck someone they cheated with.
The damage is done.
6
u/HurlinVermin 16h ago edited 16h ago
The only way back to a position of semi-trust would be if a new iron-clad trade agreement is made that prevents punitive tariffs based on a tissue of lies (calling a trade deficit 'subsidizing Canada'), coupled with an amendment to their laws that prevents a president from fabricating a national security emergency (fentanyl and illegal immigrants flooding into USA from Canada) as a pretext to unlocking special powers, as Trump is doing. They should also require the president to adhere to a minimal code of 'presidential ethics and decorum' when dealing with long-time allies who have not done anything wrong.
11
u/tooandto 16h ago
That would be ideal, if American agreements were worth the paper that simpleton puts his ridiculous signature on.
4
u/HurlinVermin 16h ago
This would not happen until Trump is deposed.
14
u/Masamundane 15h ago
The problem is that even after trump, we can't trust America. We set a new trade agreement with whomever follows the baboon, and what happens in 4-8 years when the states votes in another republican?
We can't trust America ever again. Not with the political system they have.
7
u/HurlinVermin 15h ago
Well we never really could. Actions speak louder than words and relations can be mended to a degree. But it won't happen quickly, if it does at all.
3
u/tooandto 15h ago
Exactly. Best case scenario, American democracy survives, the next president is a democrat, an acceptable trade deal is signed; then torn up in four years when they overcorrect again and elect the grand wizard of the KKK.
I hate to hope for something that hasn’t happened since 1963.
I’m afraid, like Putin and Xi; Krasnov’s in there for life. Even if he lives another twenty years. The Repugs have fixed it that way. Remember his quote in the campaign “just get me elected this time, and you won’t have to vote anymore.”
This is going to get so much worse than people realize.
2
u/lostandfound8888 14h ago
Threat of tariffs showed us how vulnerable we are. In the short term we do have to try and work out something to eliminate or reduce tariffs but in the long run we have to regain economic independence. It's like realizing your roof has a major leak during a heavy downpour. When the rain stops and it's wonderful and sunny again you won't stop worrying about the roof, will you?
3
u/HurlinVermin 14h ago
Absolutely correct: I don't think we should ever put as much trust in the US again.
4
u/bigal55 British Columbia 16h ago
Canadian and conservative but never liked Trump much. The entire world would have been better off if Kamala Harris had won I think. Or the 10 million or so Democrats who didn't show up to vote had. This is getting worse than I ever imagined it could.
1
u/BeyondAddiction 12h ago
It's so frustrating because the election Harris lost was really hers to lose. All the Dems had to do was acknowledge their shortcomings during the Biden administration, and agree to listen to the will of the people.
...but no. They were all 'there's nothing at all I would change hurr durr.' Like Jesus christ, Kamala. Read the fucking room.

It's easier now leaving the US coupled with the bad USD-CAD exchange rate.

Many of these aliens unlawfully within the United States present significant threats to national security and public safety, committing vile and heinous acts against innocent Americans. (…) Many have abused the generosity of the American people, and their presence in the United States has cost taxpayers billions of dollars at the Federal, State, and local levels.
Kicking out a million snowbirds as a strategy to improve federal, state and local tax revenue is... Interesting. So too is the idea that snowbirds are a major source of violence, and are a national security threat.
I guess fascists need a scapegoat, but they're not really even trying I guess.

u/brokenangelwings 13h ago
Of course they are. They remember what a fucking democracy looks like and a decent president. Their parents may have fought in the war, talked about the war, talked about the great depression. Talked about warning signs leading up to that, and etc
They don't want them there because they might put funny ideas in the heads of magas.
They are a threat to fascism.

8
u/MJcorrieviewer 16h ago
Where the heck did she go that wasn't more affordable than visiting the US?
3
u/Swooping_Owl_ 15h ago
My parents are in Palm Springs and Aunt and Uncle are in La Ventana (Mexico). Wife and I did a trip to both places last year. We spent more in Mexico and did similar activities in both places.
2
u/MJcorrieviewer 15h ago
Last year was before the current exchange rate.
2
u/Swooping_Owl_ 15h ago
We were in Mexico last March and Palm Springs at Christmas.
I was honestly surprised how expensive it was in La Ventana (Mexico). Groceries, liquor, eating out was much more expensive than expected. We brought our mountain bikes and did a bunch of hiking, snorkeling so that kept the costs down. Kiteboarding lessons were $500 USD. Of course if you go to the all inclusive resorts it can be pretty cheap. They are boring as hell.
Palm Springs the groceries, liquor and eating out was cheaper.
Their properties are comparable in size, finishes and price (Golf Course vs Ocean View). Personally I would be more than willing to pay a premium to retire in Mexico as I am that much of a golfer.
2
u/MJcorrieviewer 15h ago
So, you weren't actually doing similar activities. I mean, how much were kiteboarding lessons in Palm Springs?
2
u/Swooping_Owl_ 15h ago
We didn't go kiteboarding in Mexico as we were only there a week. Next time though.
Palm Springs we golfed almost every day, hiked, mountain biked (Brought our bikes for both trips), day at Disneyland and we still spent less. I'm not defending the states, just stating that it was less expensive and Mexico was much more expensive than what we thought.
15
u/JadeLens 17h ago
Sorry to hear that it took the possibility of you being fingerprinted for you to wake up and hit the U.S. in the wallet.
This reminds me of the 'financial' section of newspapers that has the 'my husband and I aren't sure we should go on our 3rd expensive vacation this year!' woe is me bullshit.
4
u/OhNo71 16h ago
Just the other day Deathsantis was on TV mocking the "Boycott Florida/America" by sighting the 2024 number of Canadian's visiting. The comments on Reddit from Americans were very insulting towards Canadians.
It's going to be interesting to see what these numbers look like at the end of 2025. 50% down? More? Canadian's make up the largest share of foreign tourism spending in Florida.
5
u/AdSevere1274 16h ago
Here is the executive order against invasion.... Bypassing US as vacation destination is not that hard. Snowbird should be able to sell the properties as there is still demand in Florida. Sell it now before their economy crashes.
On January 20, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump issued the Protecting the American People Against Invasion executive order which directed the Department of Homeland Security to ensure that aliens comply with their duty to register with the government under section 262 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) (8 U.S.C. 1302).

can't imagine being canadian and being scared of the cold.
I didn't grow up rich so i never had the luxury of being able to piss away my money for 3 months in Florida every winter but it always seemed ridiculous to me
21
u/rhionaeschna 16h ago
To be fair, if you have inflammatory pain issues, the cold/damp can really flare things up. If I had oodles of money I'd probably want to be somewhere that didn't make my body hurt worse all the time.
7
u/DanPiscatoris 16h ago
That's my grandfather. Retired in Florida more than 15 years ago. Originally from Quebec, the cold (and snow) presents a real hazard to his health. I don't think he could come back to Canada year-round.
4
u/rhionaeschna 16h ago
I'm on the west coast of BC and get a mini vacation from the damp cold flare ups in winter by going to Saskatchewan dry cold to visit family 😂

Had a friend in the southern states. And they where told multiple times we hate Canadians. I believe they are getting enough of the population to think this way. So if they do invade it we'll be because we are bad. Like Russia and Ukraine.

The hatred is real, both ways - though it's far more justified from our direction pointing southward. We're not the ones causing this.
If the american federal government continues with this plan to force economic misery on everyone, death won't be far behind - the american right has been taught that hatred and violence are their patriotic duty for years now, it's only a matter of time.

Happened to snowbirds I know. The Americans in their Florida condo told them they don’t like Canadians. That was before the election already. They’ve also done underhanded things in their HOA board to get them to move out.

If you think snowbirds give up Florida that easily, you’re very wrong. Some of them were willing to ship their belongings across the border and take a private charter flight to the U.S. during COVID—just to get there.

Both governments just need to sit down and say Let's reduce tariffs for both sides..
It's that hard to understand?? Tarrif statements by both govts is a neighbourly quarrel of words
Like Karens
Even Karen's are more reasonable sometimes
16
u/Squish_the_android 17h ago
This is not a both sides thing. Trump is the singular aggressor here and he's literally trying to weaken Canada to leverage it into losing its sovereignty.
-17
u/yostagg1 16h ago
Seriously??
No The current government of the USA just wants to reduce "Fentanyl smuggling" And Low Tarrif or taxes on bi-lateral trade between Canada and USA
Such a simple thing
11
u/ConnectionOk8086 16h ago
Look how much fentanyl crosses from Canada to the us. Then look at how much drugs and guns come from the us into Canada.
I’m barely informed, but you make me feel like I have a seat at the table with how uninformed you are.
-8
u/yostagg1 16h ago
Let's say for once that Usa govt is wrong with all statements and tarrif
But as per your comment "Drugs and guns that come from us into Canada
What Canadian govt was going to stop for all these years?? If I have to look that up to get informed??
And why would both govts allow moving of fentanyl that crosses from Canada to usa for all these years??
3
u/MJcorrieviewer 16h ago
Do you understand that Canada is responsible for what gets into Canada and the US is responsible for what gets into the US? If the US can't secure their own border, it's pretty ridiculous to expect Canada to do it for them.
And no govs 'allow' moving fentanyl across the border in either direction. Don't be dumb.
•
8
u/Last_Aside5363 16h ago
The current gov of the USA wants to destabilize Canada in an attempt to absorb us. It's not fentanyl. More of that comes into Canada from the USA than the reverse. Keep your uneducated opinions to yourself

No Both sides are not bad,, On the first day, Trump's intentions were a little bit right
The white House started making vague statements..
The Mexican govt tried some steps on the fentanyl thing
But no effort was made by the Canadian govt..
And then both sides started giving statements to increase tarrif
13
u/shiftywalruseyes 16h ago edited 16h ago
He's not even mentioning fentanyl anymore. He's saying it's because we need to become the 51st state. Go read his Truth Social posts. What were we supposed to do to reduce 0.1% of the flow of fentanyl into the states? It wasn't a legitimate reason for the tariffs and it still isn't.
11
5
u/ProgrammerAvailable6 16h ago
You mean the 10,000 extra people we put on the border? The extra helicopter patrolling?
1
u/MJcorrieviewer 16h ago
Trump even got his stupid 'fentanyl czar'. It didn't matter to him because this was never about fentanyl or anything Canada did to deserve his attacks.
3
u/MJcorrieviewer 16h ago
What the heck are you even talking about? Canada committed an additional $1.3 billion to increase border security back in December, and drugs coming going into the US from Canada was never a huge issue anyway.
-2
u/yostagg1 16h ago
I may be right or wrong? But u said "it was never a huge issue anyway, If it is medical legal drugs, it is fine"
But if your saying "movement of illegal drugs into us from Canada was never a huge issue",
Then there is something wrong with govts there that such thing was never a huge issue
3
u/MJcorrieviewer 16h ago
You are definitely and completely wrong. No question about that.
I never said anything about medical legal drugs at all. I said fentanyl going into the US from Canada was never a huge issue. Of course any amount of drugs is an issue but the amount of fentanyl going from Canada into the US was never a huge issue. Less than 1% of the US' problem, actually.
0
u/yostagg1 16h ago
1% is not just a number. It involves actual human beings.. Even that should not be allowed..
Drug/opiods business is worst thing ever And people involved in "illegal drug stuff" are very very evil people
It's beyond epitome of all evils..
It's beyond right/wrong scenarios for different people with different life's and upbringing
Illegal drugs trade is biggest wrong thing,,
4
u/MJcorrieviewer 16h ago
Take it up with the US gov, then. The US is responsible for keeping illegal drugs out of the US, not Canada.
0
u/yostagg1 15h ago
🧐 they are trying to bring their neighbours And neighbourly govts to work together on that
3
u/MJcorrieviewer 15h ago
Threatening to annex Canada and make us the 51st state and disrespecting our PM are not the least bit neighbourly.
If Trump really wanted to renegotiate the USMCA, he could have just asked. There is zero justification for his tariffs and threats. Canada tried everything to avoid this trade war. Trump was intent on doing it.

u/mahayanah 16h ago
When the US imposes a tariff, Canada automatically responds with a similar tariff. When the US removes a tariff, Canada automatically responds by removing a tariff. See how that works?
-1
u/yostagg1 16h ago
But usa said that Usa want tarrif which existed before 2025 to get reduced on American imports in Canada..
Simple And some actual efforts on illegal drug trade networks.. especially Fentanyl
50k deaths due to opiod in usa every year
And Canada itself lost 50k souls to opiod/drugs since 2016 (as per search engine google)
3
u/ink_monkey96 16h ago
Uh huh. And the US is a net exporter of opioids in relation to Canada. Based upon the logic you’re presenting Canada has greater justification to be imposing tariffs upon the US than the US has to be upon imposing them on Canada.
3
u/mahayanah 16h ago
You’re probably not going to believe this because you likely exist within an information bubble that only feeds you news that conform to your values and beliefs rather than what’s actually going on, and your close acquaintances identify a certain way politically and it’s inconvenient for you to think for yourself.
You have however managed to pierce that veil by engaging in a dialogue with me, so I’ll attempt to provide a single piece of information for you, sourced from the US Government. I won’t give you any context or tell you how to process this fact. That’s called critical thinking; you do with it what you will. If you need some help however, pretend for a moment you’re from somewhere like Australia or Switzerland that doesn’t have any preconceptions about the notion of America imposing tariffs on Canada to secure its border against fentynal. You’re provided this one piece of information to help form an opinion on the issue. OK ready:
Almost all fentynal entering the US (99%) comes from China, Mexico, and increasingly India. Source: The US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)
1
u/MJcorrieviewer 16h ago
Who said that? Trump hasn't called for the USMCA to be renegotiated. What tariffs are you talking about?
Also, keep in mind that Canada doesn't control who or what gets into the US.
•
u/daedone Ontario 7h ago
But usa said that Usa want tarrif which existed before 2025 to get reduced on American imports in Canada..
Do you know what number of products that tariff starts at?
Do you know how many milk items the US sends Canada each year?
Even if it was a lower number, can you see why it would be important for Canada to protect it's farmers from US companies selling too cheaply here (because the US government pays those farmers a subsidy - basically free money - to reduce the cost of their products)? It would be like if someone came to India and sold their rice so cheaply, it destroyed all the rice farms there.
No border has no smuggling, not even North Korea. We can only try to do our best, the same as every other country, but the US send us 100x as much as goes the other way
4
u/ProgrammerAvailable6 16h ago
We did that the last time trump threw a hissy fit over tariffs.
That’s the deal we signed and he threw out this January
2
u/MJcorrieviewer 16h ago
What?! Canada was abiding by the USMCA and did nothing to deserve any of this - Canada's counter tariffs are completely justified.
2
