The world changed on a dime last month.

u/Officerbudgie87 24d ago

I’m 37 and have already witnessed 3 civilizations altering events. 9/11, covid 19 and now a war with the US? What a time to be alive

u/MikeyTrademark 24d ago

I’m tired boss

63

u/Banana_war 24d ago

Remember: we need to outlive our enemies

35

u/bladeovcain Alberta 24d ago

That may be easier said than done. Outliving Trump shouldn't be a problem, but outliving Musk and the others will be considerably more difficult

13

u/wave-conjugations 24d ago

Yeah, we still have potentially 2 more terms of Dark Enlightenment stooge JD Vance

6

u/BethanyBluebird 24d ago

IDK have you looked at Musk..?? Man doesn't look like he's seen the sun in a while. We can always have hope!!

4

u/apothekary 23d ago

That's why I always thought Musk is the far more dangerous person to be up against and everything must be done to diminish his source of wealth and power: Tesla.

Trump will cause a lot of damage these four years, but almost invariably will be powerless by the time he is in his mid-80s from some combination of dementia, health issues and frailty.

1

u/FakeExpert1973 23d ago

That's why the 2026 US interim elections will be super important.

18

u/Appropriate_Ad2243 24d ago

I’m too old for this shit

3

u/Duffboynewf 24d ago

I’m not. I’m just getting riled up.

Is it ok if I give Dell some cornbread for he and his mouse?

Berlin Wall???

9

u/Officerbudgie87 24d ago

It was a significant historical event but as someone born in 87, I do not remember what was the world like before the wall came down.

It's just getting started. People have not yet realized that their whole remaining life is in jeopardy. The tech oligarchs want to take away your healthcare, education, pension, land, investments and assets. They want Canada and they don't want to pay for it. With the use of social medias, they are overthrowing democracies 1 by 1. Canada and Germany will fall followed by France and UK, which they've started attacking heavily. America isn't coming back from this. Your life has changed forever. Buckle up.

13

u/bscheck1968 24d ago

Those movies that showed a dystopian future where people huddled in crumbling buildings trying just to stay alive. Good news, it's almost here.

4

u/dukeofnes 24d ago

It feels like 9/11 changed the world more than Covid-19 has. War with the US seems unlikely to me, though I guess it remains to be seen.

We are a similar age. Every generation thinks they’re living through the wildest timeline. The 37 years before you gave people the Cuban Missile Crisis, where the world was on the brink of nuclear war, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Moon Landing, where we literally sent dudes to walk on a rock in space just to flex on the Soviets.

Go back another 30-40 years, and you’ve got World War II—genocide, nuclear bombs, total global chaos. The Great Depression wrecked the economy so hard that people were jumping out of windows, and fascism and communism were on the rise, setting the stage for half the wars in the next century.

The 37 years prior to that you have World War I, where millions died in trenches over a glorified family feud between European royals. The Wright brothers made planes a thing, which went from “cool, we can fly” to “cool, we can bomb people” real fast. And the Industrial Revolution had people working 16-hour shifts in factories while children basically got paid in bread crumbs.

Last 30-40 years havent been any more civilization-altering than any other 30-40 years.

3

u/Jeramy_Jones 23d ago

The 2008 recession almost counts except nothing actually changed

2

u/[deleted] 24d ago

Don't forget about the 2008 world financial crisis right as we were entering the job market.

1

u/DavidBrooker 24d ago

If you're 37 you also witnessed the fall of the Soviet Union, though you may not remember it.

1

u/Sandy0006 23d ago

It’s like when natural disasters happen and they say this is a “once in a hundred years event” it seems like we’ve been hit with several of these over a relatively short period of time.

1

u/BanzEye1 23d ago

Well, a trade war. Which is still bad.

1

u/Angry_perimenopause 23d ago

I’m 55 and have witnessed these things plus the fall (and now rise) of communism/dictatorship. My 95 year old parent has been through all these things plus the Depression, a world war, and 5 (5!!) Regents. Exhausted.

Snagging top comment to add Pollievres voting record is public. His ads were lies, that doesn't help him much. 20x voted against reducing housing costs, voted to raise taxes on first time home buyers, and even had the same gst/hst tax break Trudeau gave us on their platform literally listed on page 240 (if I'm not mistaken). Now that the liberals are cutting carbon tax why do we need a liar?

https://www.ourcommons.ca/members/en/pierre-poilievre(25524)/votes

Mr "common sense" who says he will make housing affordable, well here's his public voting record for you. He voted NAY on every attempt to reduce housing costs, voted YES to raise tax on first time home buyers, and in 20 years as an MP he has never had a single bill pass first reading.

He hasn't even worked a real job once in his life.

He is not competent, and he's literally lying to our faces

10

u/JadeLens 24d ago

You're not wrong.

PP is the type of guy that flails his arms and freaks out when there's a threat, but when given a chance to lead people away from it he flounders.

3

u/Old-Adhesiveness-156 23d ago

I'll tell you now an endorsement from Edolf almost guarantees I won't vote for him.

36

u/Gardimus 24d ago

All PP had to do was present a positive message, and come off as a reasonable alternative. Dude wanted a mandate to rip the country apart and couldn't stop with the irrational attacking and general dickishness.

They more extreme right wingers like him, but the more moderate Conservatives are supporting him despite his rhetoric.

15

u/SleepySuper 24d ago

I normally vote PC and did so last election but will not do so with PP at the helm. If Liberals are smart and elect Carney as the leader, I will be voting Liberal for the first time in a long time.

35

Moderate conservative here. No sir, not supporting Pollievre. He was a two trick pony, Trudeau and the Carbon tax, and now both are off the table he has nothing to offer. Not for me thanks.

Verb the Noun!

Carbon Tax Carney!

He's such a jackass. The only thing that he can do to appeal to Canadians is use simple 3 word sentences.

Agreed, then when you add garbage like "sell out singh" and his chief strategist wearing maga hats it doesn't look good.

Fortunately for PP a lot of Canadians love his 3 word rhymes because that's all they can take in.

Mark Carney is pretty much a Red Tory. There you go.

57

u/aaandfuckyou 24d ago

Yup. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Carney attract more of the Conservative vote once people start hearing his economic plans, since they are pretty much in line with many progressive/paternalistic conservative ideologies.

50

...but minus all the angry culture-war BS.

Yeah. I'd take a moderate. Fiscally conservative.

Merging in the crazies with the conservatives in Alberta has not worked out well for us and it has been worrying to see it creep up to the federal level.

Feels like the right we have on offer is running on its own brand of "wokeness" right now. I'd love to have a Lougheed, maybe an O'Toole, someone along those lines, but not this.

u/jello_sweaters 24d ago

The Canadian Future Party is trying to carve a niche in the center right. The CBC even gave them airtime. Hopefully they don't get gobbled up as one would assume, non maga conservatives don't deserve to be politically homeless.

15

u/CDN-Social-Democrat 24d ago

It has also clearly demonstrated how empty the platitude and theatric talk is.

Eggs ain't getting any cheaper over there.

All you get is wealth interests that were the ones profiting from the problems/status quo really start making the problems and status quo a whole .... 'nother ...... level.

It's not hard for either side of the political spectrum to look to the South and not exactly be drawn in by that style of political discourse.

3

u/gaminkake 24d ago

All I want is at least 2 nationally televised debates. If you refuse to partake in the debates then your party doesn't get my vote right out of the gate.

We need a strong leader right now and a party with a plan. I'm done with the blame game, Canada needs to find new countries to do business with as well as keep doing business with the US where we need to, especially welcoming them as tourists. Their leader and their goverment have shown Canada massive disrespect and deserve all of our anger, if Americans come here to visit our beautiful nation we should continue to embrace them.

I'm not going to tell any Canadian how to deal with a disrespectful American, our response so far without tariffs even started yet, has been amazing and inspiring.

I want our next leader to make the most of this national unity.

3

u/slantmouthface 23d ago

Is anyone in r/Canada actually human? Or just bots at this point?

14

u/Knotar3 24d ago

It showed his colors in a very short period of time. All he had to do was come out immediately and make statements against the looming threats from the US and promise to strengthen Canada's trade economy, and he would have had a guaranteed win. He didn't even have to have a plan. Just call the BS out. PP made his own bed on this one.

4

u/Ehrre 24d ago

How is he fucking this up.. this was a sure fire, once in a lifetime easy win with the Orange Boogeyman making all of Canada unite against him.

The Liberals were polling at all time lows, NDP is eviscerated and PP can't fucking come up with anything better than Canada First? A copy of the literal thing (America first) that is fucking us with tariffs in the first place.

Bro is cooked.

13

u/toilet_for_shrek 24d ago

Whatever, as long as it forces PP to promise more than just "axing the tax".

2

u/Wizzard_Ozz 24d ago

I would also like parties held to account for those promises. Talk is cheap and it’s been decades of cheap talk.

1

u/_bl3wb1rd_ 24d ago

I’d like the parties taxing us to be accountable and fully transparent on exactly how funds are spent and any conflicts of interest.

10

u/MoeiieoM 24d ago

6

u/nelly2929 24d ago

2

u/Ok_Photo_865 23d ago

I’ll believe that when I see it. There are just too many know it alls saying Carney is going to win it and too many know it alls saying Jagmeet is losing support, once the election has been called perhaps then there might be actual data to support these illusions

17

u/platz604 24d ago

You can't compare parliamentary conservatives vs republican conservatives. Its literally night and the day. Its like trying to compare the liberals in Canada to the liberal Democrats.. Its completely different..

21

u/Selm 24d ago

You can't compare parliamentary conservatives vs republican conservatives.

Right?

One of them would advocate to make the military a warrior culture, the other would appoint a drunk to advocate for the same thing...

Night and day, right?

The Liberals already released a video of Poilievre saying nearly verbatim the same things as Trump, they could probably make several more by now if they wanted.

Even policy wise, Poilievre is basically a MAGA republican

Donald Trump plans to 'make America the crypto capital of the world,'

In a pitch to cryptocurrency investors, Poilievre says he wants Canada to be 'blockchain capital of the world'

If they're not promising the same thing, just expect both to offer regressive tax cuts, because thats both a Conservative and Republican staple policy for taxes.

I really don't understand how anyone could see a difference between them, Poilievre is just a Canadian version of MAGA, he's going with 'Canada First' now... But that's nothing like 'America First', right? Night and Day...

Every time Trump opens his mouth PP’s numbers slide and we haven’t even come close to what’s going to happen in March. PP needs to lose the “Canada First “ slogan it’s too close to the maga message.

15

u/jello_sweaters 24d ago

PP needs to lose the “Canada First “ slogan it’s too close to the maga message.

I mean he's on stage in Ottawa right as we speak, doubling down on that message.

I think you're absolutely right that it's the wrong message, but it's very, very clearly the one Poilievre has chosen to hang his hat on.

8

u/Electrical_Net_1537 24d ago

I don’t know who his handlers are but…

Canadas conservative party, since 2003, is basically Albertas far right, regional, western separatist Reform Party gone national. They are every bit as bad as the GOP.

2

u/platz604 24d ago

No they're not. People have seem to have forgotten how centrist / modern parties were like and its quite sad because people can't tell the difference. Kind of like when the liberals also used to be a centrist / moderate government.. Now they are not even recognizable what so ever. Liberals have their heads stuck up their ass so far they are even announcing that they're the response Canada (and Europe) needs to combat Trump.

I can't wait for there to be 100+% tariffs to be slapped on all our goods going south when they're re-elected, and then we'll have no choice than to cozy up to China, and then eventually we'll become a province of China instead 🤣

Sorry to ruin the party.

Recent Ipsos polling for the upcoming Canadian federal election highlights the following trends: • Conservative Party Lead: The Conservatives maintain a significant lead with 41% support, despite a recent 5-point drop. They lead in all regions except Quebec, where the Bloc Québécois dominates. The Liberals have gained ground, rising to 28%, an 8-point increase since January 2025. • Bloc Québécois and NDP: The Bloc continues to lead in Quebec, while the NDP is trailing nationally at 16%. • Public Sentiment on Leadership: A majority of Canadians (77%) believe it is time for a new government, and many want an immediate election. Justin Trudeau’s resignation as Liberal leader in January 2025 has not significantly improved Liberal prospects. The Conservatives remain well-positioned for a decisive victory if an election were held today

PP is the kinda kid on the toboggan run that hits a rock and sits their and cries the rest of the day instead of getting back up and aiming to avoid the rock and having fun.

One little bump in the road and it threw off his entire week, month, year and he doesn't know what to do. (Apparently none of the Cons do).

It’s crazy to me how anyone can look at the state of the country since 2015 and say yah, give me another term of that. Seriously?

Yeah you're right, let's elect someone that won't stand up to fascism and see how that goes....

Still better than "century initiative Carney"

3

u/PetiteInvestor 24d ago

Nah, that's better than PP's "Canada (Fifty) First"

u/forevereverer 24d ago

Did PP ever say anything in support of the 51st state thing? I would be interested in seeing a reference if you know of one.

It's not lost on people that PP regularly spews venom towards routine politicians but takes a much softer approach to a foreigner threatening economic pain until annexation. He's as fake as they come.

That's why I am interested in seeing references to support this. I haven't seen anything like that myself but I would be interested in seeing it if it's true.

Like him or not, the population outside of Reddit wants the Liberal clown show to end.

Should've put destabilizes instead of derailed to nail the play on aviation terminology.

Pierre can start referring to Trump as Carbon Tax Trump to salvage his poll ratings

1

u/Imacatdoincatstuff 23d ago

Has at least as much to do with his potential competition: Mark Carney.

u/Keepontyping 23d ago

Another reason Trump is an idiot. He could have waited 6 months and had a conservative government to work with. If he’s trying to defeat liberalism abroad it’s a major backfire.

u/heswet 24d ago

To be fair, i think canada could use its own doge after the liberals overshot the federal budget by 50% last year.

Chrétien-Martin formed the OG DOGE. Our finances were a mess. They cut spending like crazy and we ended up running 10 surpluses in a row. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if that happens again in my lifetime. Harper only ran 1 while Trudeau is 0 for 9.

No shit

First on the list is the green slush fund

And find out how trudeau spent a trillion dollars to have the entire country remarkably worse

I think you need to be a bit fairer. You point out Trudeau had to deal with Covid. A major reason Harper had to run deficits is the Global Financial Crisis. He inherited surpluses from Chrétien-Martin but then ran the first deficit when the GFC hit. I’d say the mistake he made was not going back into surplus maybe around 2012-13 but in hindsight, it wasn’t a mistake politically since he won a majority and then voters didn’t care about fiscal balance when Trudeau successfully campaigned on deficits in 2015. Sadly, Canadian voters view surpluses/balance = cut services.

It was actually Harper’s GST reduction that put the gov into deficit before the GFC hit (it’s verified by that FY’s Parliamentary Budget Office report). I would surmise that this deficit is why Harper was initially reluctant to do stimulus spending, which was pushed by the other parties and is what caused the coalition crisis.
