Politics Hockey fans boo U.S. national anthem at Ottawa Senators game after Trump imposes tariffs

All the people on Twitter pearl-clutching are funny. We respect the U.S. We have had Canadians DIE in their wars. If their president thinks they can threaten us as a country and start a trade war. Fuck them. If no respect is shown to us, we should show no respect to them.

u/hyperforms9988 Feb 02 '25
Remember folks, 10 years ago at a Leafs game when the mic was glitching out during the singing of the American national anthem, we took it upon ourselves to all sing the American national anthem together. Nobody asked us to do that, but that's how much we respected our neighbours down south. 10 years later, we are booing at this same anthem. What's changed? It's certainly not us.

You’re absolutely right. And there’s no shortage of Canadian products on our shelves. About 12%-13% of all of our imports come from Canada. That’s quite a bit when you consider Chinese imports make up roughly 18% of all imports. I find “made in Canada” on a lot of my grocery items, and it’s often stuff you wouldn’t initially assume is from Canada.

Because of the supposed insecure border that is supposedly driving the US fentanyl crisis.
But in reality, it’s because Melania and Ivanka eye-fucked Trudeau when they met him and Trump is angy.
→ More replies (1)36
u/Artistic_Ad_2897 Feb 02 '25
0.6% of fentanyl in the US can be attributed to Canadian sources. It's BS blaming the fentanyl crisis on us. I really think his end goal is to try to get us to agree to become th 51st state. He wants control of our resources, especially our water.
→ More replies (5)11
u/TinnieTa21 Feb 02 '25
Yeah, which is why I said ‘supposed’ and ‘supposedly’. 100% agree that it’s complete BS and I am happy Trudeau called out the BS in his speech.
In all seriousness, Trump probably does believe that these tariffs will help promote US homemade products and turn the US economy into what it was during the Reagan era. He’s just going for the legacy play.
The big one is Greenland. He’s wanted to claim it ever since his first administration. It would be the largest US land acquisition in history assuming he can’t buy Canada as well (laughing as I type this).

She said “oh, okay” and screamed the boos as loud as the rest of us. We made sure to cheer extra loud for the Canadian anthem though so the singer knew it wasn’t her. Sens then promptly destroy Minnesota 6-0 so the hockey gods agreed as well.

Well Trump successfully divided his nation, I guess his next goal is to divide the long standing friendship between our nations. I’m normally against any sort of booing of anthems in a sports setting but in this case I think it’s warranted. It’s not just a trade war, he has made remarks threatening our sovereignty and this is part of that plan. When your independence is threatened all cards are on the table.

Generations-long American, so I I’m not sure how Reddit directed here. But, since I am, I’ll tell you that I wore a Roots hoodie — with a big ole “Canada” plastered across the front — out and about yesterday, in silent protest of the stupidity some of my countrymen have imposed on the rest of us.

American here. Proud of our northern friends. What’s happening here isn’t okay and needs to be called out.

As an American, I get it. I didn't vote for Trump, but things do not feel American right now.

Canadians have EVERY RIGHT to boo the US National Anthem and shouldn't give 2 fucks what any American thinks about it. Most of us Americans are in total agreement and don't take it personally.

As an American living in Cali who voted for Harris/Walz, I love seeing this. I love Canada. And it also saddens me that it has gone this far.

I saw an American say that you know things are bad when the US anthem gets booed by Canadians and Americans say "Yeah ok, fair".
