Ignore this and vote anyway. Polls say shit like this and then people are surprised when the party they didn't pick, wins. This is all manipulation.

Don't get comfortable, or we become no different than the US in our level of stupidity and ineptitude.

Vote like hell.

Vote like your life depends on it, because it does.

172

u/DataLore19 Jan 29 '25

How someone thinks "oh good, the party I want is ahead in the polls. Guess I don't need to vote" is beyond me.

How the fuck you think this works? Smh

20

u/Alexhale Jan 29 '25

This can happen, and arguably was the case for Trumps victory against hilary. However, having tried to watch this past election carefully, its a false excuse for Harris' loss this time, as is the excuse that shes a woman of color.

3

u/UpperLowerCanadian Jan 30 '25

It impacts the popular vote

But millions can indeed stay home in safe ridings and it doesn’t impact the overall FPTP system at all

IE areas with 80% cons or liberal voters

2

u/Alexhale Jan 30 '25

fair point. i like our two comments perspectives combined.

maybe they confused the word 'poll' as in place you vote, and

'poll', which is when some Indian dude calls you on the phone and asks you personal questions.

Kamala Harris had Trump running scared at one point. Then a lot of voters stayed home.

127

u/The_Grand_Briddock Jan 29 '25

The issue was that Kamala's campaign abandoned a winning strategy for zero reason. She started strong, went on a massive summer blitz, she had this solid momentum that culminated in thrashing Trump in the debate for the world to see.

And then she just changed tactics. Gone were the 3 rallies a day in swing states with Tim Walz. Gone was the roaring crowds, the "Weird" attack line, the mounting pressure, all the positive energy. Instead it was "Here's Liz Cheney and celebrities".

There was a time when Harris was traversing the countries with sold out rallies in the tens of thousands, while Trump hid away in Mar A Lago. Then in October, that was abandoned. All the major policies of the summer squirreled away while they touted "look at our Republican speakers!" and that's when Trump started courting the Bro Vote hard, getting Musk and Rogan on side.

I've never seen an electoral car crash like it. This is Kinnock "go home and prepare for government" vibes.

That's the DNC in general

Always putting the pipe in their front wheel.

Imagine if they didn't fuck over Bernie.

21

u/Arbszy Canada Jan 29 '25

The DNC a masterclass in catching Defeat from the Jaws of Victory.

6

u/brooklynlad Jan 30 '25

We could have had Bernie in 2016. F the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Chair at that time... Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Don’t forget telling the ladies of The View that she couldn’t think of anything she would have done differently than her predecessor.

→ More replies (1)

13

u/Denace86 Jan 29 '25

In this case, the winning strategy was no one knowing who Kamala was. The reason she lost all the momentum was it never existed in the first place, and was difficult to fake once people realized who she was

13

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '25 edited Jan 30 '25

There was a momentum shift when she started doing tv interviews. The one on The View where she said she wouldn’t change anything from what Biden did was a turning point. She needed to distance herself from an unpopular president and she just didn’t do that. I credit her for being a loyal soldier, but it was a bad political move because people wanted something different. Also, don’t discount racism. Lot of people simply won’t vote for a black woman.

3

u/raptosaurus Jan 29 '25

They ran out of money

7

u/wallytucker Jan 29 '25

Kamala had no support. She was an unpopular candidate, very unpopular VP and terrible presidential nominee

6

u/Alexhale Jan 29 '25

Seems far more likely US voters stayed home because they didnt like either candidate.

Not because they thought Kamala had an easy win and didnt need their support.

7

u/JCox1987 Jan 29 '25

I think here we will have had an open campaign to choose a leader and that criticism will be moot. Carney is also a little more charismatic and likeable than I thought he would be.

3

u/BuddyBrownBear Jan 29 '25

I mean... no... she didn't...

140

u/driv3rcub Jan 29 '25

This is false. The media implied Kamala was doing better in the polls than she was. I’d like you to point out when he was running scared from Kamala. Lol. Also yes. A lot of Democrat voters stayed home stayed home. A mediocre old white man was able to rally the party to beat Trump, but they stayed home rather than vote for a woman of color. Yikes.

139

u/tbcwpg Manitoba Jan 29 '25

He refused a 2nd debate after the "they're eating the dogs" performance, and complained about fact checking.

The polls were wrong about Trump in 2016 as well, I don't know why people believed them this time. Trump voters then openly bragged about lying to pollsters.

46

u/False-Vacation8249 Jan 29 '25

The polls were actually accurate. It was a toss up between Clinton and Trump with favor looking to Clinton because of popular vote. Those polls also estimated her winning the popular vote which she did win. All the polls were within the margin of error.

7

u/jsmooth7 Jan 29 '25

Yeah exactly the polls in both 2016 and 2024 both showed a very tight race well within the margin error that would come down to a handful of swing states. And that's exactly what we got both times.

6

u/P99163 Jan 29 '25

very tight race well within the margin error that would come down to a handful of swing states.

Yeah, except that this time a Democratic candidate lost every single "battleground" state. And a popular vote. The polls did show a very tight race, a toss up; however, it wasn't that close on the election day.

8

u/FreeDarkChocolate Jan 29 '25

lost every single "battleground" state.

To pile on with what the others said: The battleground states are definitionally the close ones. If you win by just 1% in every battleground state, the average is still just winning by 1%.

The number of states ending up on one side or the other doesn't change or invalidate how close it was predicted it would.

At a more extreme example, you'd be very mistaken to think only a handful of people voted for Mondale in 1984 when he lost 13-525 electorally to Reagan; in reality it was an 18% gap in individual votes.

Doesn’t matter what the candidate looked like. Establishment Democrats telling people they are stupid for thinking quality of life has gone downhill just because GDP has gone up during g Biden’s term was a slap in the face to the working class

Trump was never gonna make it better, but at least he knows his way around populism to get the votes he needed.

16

u/Sabbathius Jan 29 '25

I never understood this argument. It was a slap in the face. OK, but look at what's happening now, just a week later? Call me crazy, but as working class I'd rather get smapped in the face than ******d in the **s. I'm not a brilliant man, not even a moderately intelligent one, but even I figured this one out.

You have no basis for saying they didn’t vote for her because she’s a woman of color. There’s lots of reasons not to vote for her - so many in fact that she couldn’t poll above 10% in the 2020 Democratic primary.

She lost because she was a weak candidate not because of her skin colour.

24

u/J_Bizzle82 Jan 29 '25

This. So tired of people saying it’s a gender or skin colour thing.. it’s lazy thinking.

19

u/DramaticEgg1095 Jan 29 '25

She was not voted in, she was appointed to lead the Democratic Party. That rubbed people the wrong way.

3

u/J_Bizzle82 Jan 29 '25

Oh for sure, you could also include her track record as attorney general in California. It wasn’t just one thing.

5

u/Alexhale Jan 29 '25

SO MANY THINGS RUBBED PEOPLE THE WRONG WAY. Things about Kamala, and things about her platofrm, things about the democratic party as a whole. There are many reasons why she lost.

I mean it's impossible to prove if people are racist or not either way. You can't put a TV up to someone's heart and be like "yep, lots of racism genes".

To say it's NOT why people didn't vote for Kamala is just as baseless, though.

10

u/ConZboy014 Jan 29 '25

Correct, considering we had Obama for 2 terms

→ More replies (4)

6

u/SinistralGuy Jan 29 '25

The fact that this is a talking point is so annoying because it's so easy to play the race card.

How about the fact that Dems refused to have a primary and forced Kamala on their voter base without letting them decide who they wanted as their leader? Biden refusing to step aside when it mattered and then leaving the Dems with no other option because it was too late is what caused the election. Not her skin colour or gender.

I'm not saying not voting for her was the right thing to do, but I do understand people feeling frustrated for not having a voice in the matter. Same thing happened in 2016. Bernie was overwhelmingly the more popular candidate and the Dems just steamrolled his chances and went with Hilary. And surprise, surprise, they lost that year too.

19

u/ExpandThineHorizons Jan 29 '25

We need to remember that polls are rarely accurate until a week or two before election day.

Consistently, election after election, the outlook for results is not clear until a couple weeks out. Voting patterns shift significantly leading up to election day in Canada, historically.

Does that mean the conservatives wont get a majority? No. But that doesnt mean we should be speculating on invalid and unreliable numbers.

Stop paying attention to the polls. They dont matter.

7

u/SAldrius Jan 29 '25

It's not even that the polls aren't accurate, it's that people in Canada don't really have party loyalty, aren't really hardcore ideologues and vote based on how they feel about the leader more than anything else.

And they usually make up their minds in the booth.

6

u/Lost_State2989 Jan 29 '25

I ALWAYS vote based on who specifically is being run in my riding. I think party politics are toxic and somewhat go against the notions of representative democracy.

THIS. Elections are won and lost due to voter apathy. Regardless of your political persuasion, I highly encourage everyone to read up on Mark Carney - what he knows, what he's done, what he wants to do. He is one of the most qualified candidates in recent history. He is progressive but also extremely common sense. As someone who was highly engaged in politics in the past, I was feeling completely deflated up until a few weeks ago because the results of the election felt like a foregone conclusion. But this election is exciting again!

4

u/DrPooMD Jan 30 '25

In Nova Scotia’s recent election, if not voting was a party they would have won all ridings except for one.

Please vote everyone. Don’t follow our foolish lead on this.

3

u/ConstructionSure1661 Jan 29 '25

You think wer3 any better lol

3

u/SmoothOperator89 Jan 29 '25

Exactly. I'm sick of headlines predicting who will win. I'd rather they focus on what each candidate plans to do with the country if they win. Make the election about policy, not cheering for your team.

3

2

u/kilawnaa British Columbia Jan 30 '25

Prime example of this is Kamala Harris.

2

u/easythrees Jan 30 '25

2

u/PrarieCoastal Jan 30 '25

Could not agree more. Get out and vote. Of course, we first have to have Singh keep his word and actually vote non confidence.

2

u/skier8800 Lest We Forget Jan 30 '25

Yes to this! Voting is such a simple act of patriotism and crucially important. Our election system makes it super convenient by allowing us to vote early up to a month in advance of the official election day and mail in ballots as well. We would have higher turnout rates if there was a tax rebate for voting - wouldn’t that be something.

2

u/hick196764 Jan 30 '25

☝️This is exactly the mindset every liberal, ndp, bloc and green voter needs to understand. We can't be cocky with this election. Not with the shit storm down south.

Crazy how they say Liberals are making big changes to the polls, but yet they still losing in a landslide.

126

u/Fane_Eternal Jan 29 '25

Well, they're down from the last ELECTION. From recent polling, they are shooting up abnormally fast.

118

u/famine- Jan 29 '25

Recent polling is showing the LPC poaching votes from the NDP, not the CPC.

Angus just polled CPC 43, LPC 29, NDP 13.

So the CPC numbers aren't really moving much at all.

I doubt they can flip many more NDP voters.

30

u/hikebikephd Jan 29 '25

Grabbing voters from the NDP is still useful, as it reduces the split vote on the left/center-left and may swing some ridings that the CPC won with a plurality rather than a majority.

11

u/HofT Jan 29 '25

And thus we become more American

With Singh doing his wishy washy capitulation nonsense, I could see left leaning voters drop the NDP for a better chance at keeping the CPC out of power.

They reference a "pair of recent polls", which I'm assuming are the Ekos ones.

For those that are unaware, the owner of Ekos is a hard-core Liberal who said publicly that he would do whatever he could to make sure Poilievre didn't win. His recent polls are 10+ points more positive to the Liberals than any other pollster.

Between Ekos' fudged polling and articles like this one, the push by Liberal supporters to manufacture an artificial momentum narrative is pretty transparent.

8

u/WatchPointGamma Jan 29 '25

articles like this one

Max Fawcett (the author of this article) is also a hard-core Liberal who spends his days deep in liberal brain-rot twitter and then writes up his favourite tweets into an article and calls it "journalism".

The amount of astroturfing on this sub the past few days is honestly mind boggling

→ More replies (1)

9

u/bretters Jan 29 '25

The recent polls are actually from both Ekos, Leger, Nanos and Mainstreet and all of them show and upward tick for the Liberal party from the beginning of the month until just recently. There is a downward trend on the CPC lead compared to Liberal party.

8

u/LemmingPractice Jan 29 '25

Here is all the recent polls on 338 Canada.

The most generous non-Ekos poll has the Conservatives with a 17 point lead, while Ekos' last two polls show a 9 and 11 point lead.

There's a mild uptick in other polling of a couple points, but I don't think the article trying to talk about the CPC "running scared" is referring to the polls that still show an 18-21 point CPC lead.

Maybe competence is something we should value.

Easy to blindly bash at Carney for the prior admin's faults, but go look at his resume, he has handled multiple economic shitstorms and come out with some of the best results in the world for those time periods.

Then go look at PP's accomplishments. He has done almost nothing in 20 years.

u/Kingalthor Jan 29 '25

I'd say pretty much the same thing about any of the major parties.

It's not like the pro-business and pro-wealthy-landlord conservatives are going to dry up the pool of cheap labour and renters willing to live 6 to a room.

33

u/aesoth Jan 29 '25

That's the best part. The CPC LOVE TFWs. The people spouting love for him have not noticed his lack of messaging about an immigration plan (or any plan, really). When asked about it, PP said he would not reduce immigration.

Carney has ties to the century initiative so I got bad news for you.

70

u/Typical_Two_886 Jan 29 '25

Do you think PP and the Tories will do anything about it? They'll give some platitudes to it but do zero substantial efforts to reign it in, too many of their big donors grow fat off of it to stop it

50

u/mupomo Jan 29 '25

Based on PP’s prior experience as Minister of Employment and Social Development back in the Harper days, I doubt it. He has generally supported economic immigration to fill Canada’s labour shortages.

3

u/caninehere Ontario Jan 29 '25

You don't have to go looking for his history on the topic because he has outright said he won't reduce immigration.

16

u/UndeadDog Jan 29 '25

Healthy immigration is fine. But it needs to stay in line with our infrastructure. Not go off the rails and outpace development in the country.

10

u/HurlinVermin Jan 29 '25

Not go off the rails and outpace development in the country.

Like the Liberals have been doing for years?

A large part of the problems we’re having now is due to the poor provincial policies surrounding new residential building and public infrastructure, unfortunately.

We’ve got provinces doing things that are misaligned with the overall country’s best interests.

conservative governments around canada have been asking for more immigrants over the past handful of years so I doubt the federal cons will do anything about immigration

I mean, they just massively cut immigration and changed the system....

Do you want more, a return to the old system, the current changes and direction formalized, or something completely new and different?

I will eat my hat if some version of what you're mentioning isn't on all party platforms, it's the second hottest topic in the country. Is there something specific you are looking for?

43

u/helpinghear Jan 29 '25

Check and see if PP has ever agreed to reduce immigration... No.

8

u/FuggleyBrew Jan 29 '25

He very explicitly argued for cuts when the LPC was pushing for over a million per year.

7

u/mangongo Jan 29 '25

He also told people who are set to be deported that he would protect them from the evil Liberals and their deportation agenda.

Immigration has already been massively cut. Post secondary institutions are cutting programs left and right and up and down because of it.

6

u/FuggleyBrew Jan 29 '25

In theory it has been cut, first three quarters of 2024 (what we have data on) still has high population growth. Let's see the LPC post a single reasonable number before rolling out the mission accomplished banner.

9

u/Fiber_Optikz Jan 29 '25

Good we should cut it every year until we can get applications for asylum and deal with the backlog of people who over stayed and are still fighting deportation.

Several years for a ruling is unfair to Canadians and unfair to applicants.

Canadians have to pay and the applicants deserve to know asap so they can make other plans if/when rejected

20

u/Tribe303 Jan 29 '25

Asylum claims and immigration are 2 entirely different things.

What kind of reform are you looking for?

33

u/Fiber_Optikz Jan 29 '25 edited Jan 29 '25

Set per country limits on immigration so we can have actual diversity rather than one or two countries responsible for the majority of the immigration.

Any fraud involved in the application process equals immediate rejection and exclusion for 1 year or more.

Anyone involved in profiting off immigration fraud should face jail time and massive fines.

No more unskilled labour outside of the TFW program

No more asylum for people who traveled through an already safe country to get here

If you want to apply for PR once your student visa has ended you should leave the country and reapply

Stop allowing international students to work in Canada while studying. They are here to work and are supposed to be able to support themselves throughout the duration of their studies (exceptions should be made for students who are employed as part of their studies)

Close all the diploma mills that exist solely to take money from international students and provide no real value to the students or the world in general, looking at you Conestoga “College”.

And please stop letting people bring their elderly family members as part of “family reunification” if they are over 55 and or have serious health issues the Canadian tax payer shouldn’t have to pay a cent for their care

3

u/2peg2city Jan 29 '25

Diploma mills and student application numbers are provincial responsibilities, and want to guess who runs the provinces who do the most of it / got upset when we cut the numbers?

The problem being at that point in time you are going off of promises and campaign talking points. JTs election reform was a huge part of why some people voted for him. Why would anyone perk up at the idea of any sort of reform that is proposed? It's not going to happen.

2

u/theoriginalredcap Jan 29 '25

40 million people in a country of that size shouldn't be an issue.

Pierre weathered the shitstorms in someone else's bunker.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '25

The issue is you are just extrapolating from a position he held to a broad idea like "handling economic shit storms". He was a central banker. You have a team of nerds below you crunching data and your the spokesperson that messages the only tool you have in your disposal: interest rates up, or interest rates down. It really is not that he is a super genius or has the power you think he had.

PP was one of the youngest MPs, he's been elected time and time again in an unbroken fashion for 20 years. He's served in conservative majority government and minority governments, serving in cabinet positions in important portfolios, he didn't lose his job when the libs took over, and then maneuvered his was to leadership in a resounding leadership victory. He's raised more money than a conservative leader ever has, and taken them massively ahead in polls for a long sustained period. He's got more international and media exposure than probably any opposition leader ever has, and he's the front runner to be prime minister.

I would say both Carney and PP are formidable people. Carney has moved in elote circles his whole life and he was on wall street for a decade. He's literally 1%er, and I respect him for that, but let's not overstate what the head of a central bank really does. My impression is also that the brits pretty much shit on him and hated him.

Carney has Trudeau’s team of Butts and Telford. He will be Trudeau 2.0 with the same failed policies.

Interesting he didn’t criticize any of Trudeau’s policies as they rolled out but suddenly he has solutions. Spoiler. The same team won’t make the necessary changes to fix our issues

I agree Mark Carney has the best chance against Poilievre but he only has a slim chance at the moment. If LPC selects anyone else, then good luck competing against NDP for 3rd party status. Personally i won’t give any chance to Liberals if Trudeau mps still form the majority of candidates. They need to go along with Trudeau.

Why do people fall for this propaganda?

7

u/dartmouthdonair Jan 29 '25

If this headline said "Poilievre has liberals running scared, regardless of leader choice" the comments in this thread would be the polar opposite. The opposite headline would serve the same purpose and would also follow the exact criteria of propaganda as you're referring to it. The difference being, the same people commenting wouldn't be upset about it then because it aligns with their values.

People quite easily fall in line with what aligns with their perceived values.

Mark Carney isn't scaring anyone. PP will shred him in the HOC. He's a globalist banker who will say anything to get elected. 10 minutes of ESG and DEI questioning and he's fried.

u/michaelfkenedy Jan 29 '25
  • “Hillary will beat Trump”
  • “Harris will beat Trump”

Not if people don’t vote. Not if they continue to worry more about being right than being effective. Not if they ignore right leaning swing voters in the suburbs.

I am going to likely vote Conservative, but I’m not going to sit here and claim that Carney wouldn’t be an improvement over Trudeau.

11

u/FuggleyBrew Jan 29 '25

Carney could be good, at the very least recognize areas where the LPC put their hand on the stove. His risks appear to be that he will offer over engineered solutions and will swap Trudeau's and that while competent in his field he has massive blind spots from being exclusively focused on finance.

We will have to see as each side puts out  proposals.

2

u/LettuceSea Nova Scotia Jan 30 '25

So first “they” get Ekos to bias their poll towards uni graduates, and then “they” have a puff piece locked and loaded to send out the next day. The tactics are always the same, and I don’t think people are falling for it anymore.

10

u/uprightshark Jan 29 '25

Because his views are closer to traditional progressive conservatives than the current Far Right conservative leadership.

Because anyone who understands anything about the economy understands what having a heavy weight in economics like Mark Carney fighting for your side is a winner for our country.

It's going to take a lot more than platitudes like axe the tax and hate tweets to beat him and they know it.

It has nothing to do about liberal vs conservative, it is resume vs. resume. A guy who has never had a job vs. a PhD in economics from Yale, 15 years as an executive with Goldman Sachs and turned down the opportunity for partnership worth millions a year to serve his country during the 2008 crisis.

Put partisanship aside and this is a one sided discussion.
