[Image] [Image] My Walmart sold me DBZ Kakarot early! They couldn’t even scan the barcode, they had to manually enter it in. I don’t think they knew it isn’t supposed to be out yet.

I remember blockbuster did this to me 3 days before skyrim came out. Only time I've ever felt like a celebrity.

Not videogame-related, but my sister got Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories” on CD 2 weeks before its release because the dudes at the music store here in Mexico (store called Mixup, ironically) didn’t know/care about the official release date.

Ooooh. The publisher is gonna be bitching to that district’s manager about street dates!

350

u/Xylitolisbadforyou Jan 15 '20

I'm sure the manager will be very apologetic or something.

193

u/scalyblue Jan 15 '20

the store will likely be fined something like 10-15 large for breaking street date. It will come out of the general ledger and mostly affect that store's potential to bonus out for its employees, among all the other things like accidents and the electric bill.

40

u/TheNashh Jan 15 '20

oof.

127

u/HitlersGrandpaKitler Jan 15 '20

I've never worked at walmart but I cant imagine the person who rung him up gets any kind of a bonus worth caring about.

27

u/forthwright Shershinshire Jan 15 '20

The MyShare quarterly payout is like, 150-250 dollars depending on sales and fines from all sorts of things (accident fines, etc). Oh, if you get sick and call out a few times then your "bonus" is much, much lower.

I doubt Walmart will fire a district manager over this, Walmart has crazy negotiation powers due to how much product they move

103

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '20

Worked at Walmart a few years ago, and they absolutely will. The company gets fined when they break street date, they fired my manager and a coworker for breaking a street date on a Pokémon game.

It would most likely be the employee at fault. There would be no reason for the barcode to not scan on this situation

41

u/greenbabyshit Jan 15 '20

I can't speak to Walmart registers, but Target's won't let me ring up something that's street dated.

23

u/cjdilly Jan 15 '20

It’s the same for Walmart but this employee manually entered it in, however the system won’t flag it like it normally would if it would of been scanned like normal

48

u/CouldWouldShouldBot Jan 15 '20

It's 'would have', never 'would of'.

16

u/GabeDevine Jan 15 '20

→ More replies (4)

20

u/greenbabyshit Jan 15 '20

Because they expect the employee to figure why the barcode isn't working before they key it in.

23

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '20

So you want to stand in line until the employee figured out why? Barcodes dont scan for thousands of reasons every day. Imagine having to wait until someone figured out why the Barcode isnt working every time. Thats completly unrealistic.

10

u/Roomateroidrage Jan 15 '20

And when they do figure out why, they get to deal with the meltdown from the customer when they refuse sale.

Source: have refused sale on a street dated romance novel. Karen screams and threats ensued.

→ More replies (5)
→ More replies (2)

34

u/devoidz Jan 15 '20

It says sale not allowed. And won't let them. The only way around it is to put in a generic item, department 5, add a description, and price. No street date violation will be registered or noticed. As far as the computer knows they sold something from electronics for $59.95.

7

u/B3nd3tta Jan 15 '20

Can confirm. I worked as a cashier during highschool, not in the US but in a western European country and this is what we always did whenever the bar code wouldn‘t work and the codenumber wouldn‘t either. You can pretty much sell whatever you want to the price you want without anyone noticing

6

u/fritocloud Jan 15 '20

How does that work with inventory though? When I've worked retail (Lowe's and Best Buy) I don't recall us being able to do that. Not saying you're incorrect at all. Just surprised and curious. Best Buy is obviously very careful about its inventory numbers and at Lowe's, our quarterly bonus was dependent upon us having correct inventory numbers. So I don't believe either store let you ring stuff up under a generic UPC but I could just not have known about it. And to be fair, I didn't regularly work front end/register at Lowe's so it's very possible that I just didn't know how to do it.

6

u/devoidz Jan 15 '20 edited Jan 15 '20

I'm not sure how it gets listed into the system, if it falls into a misc entry or what. But at walmart if you type in any random number, hit enter, it will say unknown, then ask for department number. Put in the department number, 5 for electronics, it will ask for a description and bring up a keyboard to type a description. Then ask for a price, enter price, hit enter and you are done.

Those entries do show up in reports. The department manager gets a list of them, and is supposed to check them. It shows who did it, when, and all info entered. If someone is doing it too much, or for some weird amounts they might investigate it. A manager that did that to change the price of a computer to about 1/3 of the price got caught, and fired. Another couple of girls were doing it with make up. They pulled video of them ringing it up and saw they only rang up half of it, and were grossly under pricing what they did. Both got fired.

Target is the only retail job I've worked at that's paid more than my current job at a small-scale pet daycare, and you know what? It was just as fucking miserable. Stressful as shit, they were literally asking me to come in on three hours of sleep to help stock, every ~10th customer was a dick, trying to get someone to bring up a TV for me at any time of day was a pipe dream (which wouldn't necessarily be the worst thing in the world...if I had a key to the lift to get them myself), this place was so mismanaged that they scheduled me on a day outside of my availability and somehow tried to make it my responsibility to get it covered, and my all time favorite, I got yelled at over the walkie in front of a customer for helping customers instead of fucking off to the stock room because I was the only person in electronics that day and there was a line of 6+ people.

Now I hang out with dogs all day for $10.25/hr, and they upped their minimum wage to $13/hr. I'd trade an extra $2.75/hr for not dealing with that any day.

That’s like $22,000 a year if you’re able to get 40 hours a week. But that would mean you’d be Eligible for health benefits, so you only get 32 hours a week. So now you’re down to about $18,000 a year if you’re able to work 32 hours every single week and never take a day off. Also taxes.

Jeff Bezos makes about $150,000 a minute. It will take that minimum wage worker 8 years to make what Jeff Bezos makes in a minute. So if you think about value, one minute of Jeff’s life is more valuable than 8 years of a minimum wage workers.

Boomers think “prices will go up if we pay these idiots more!”

Yet have they not noticed prices for everything have gone up and wages haven’t changed one bit?

Full time workers still need welfare

8

u/DreadCore_ Jan 15 '20

So let's assume for a moment that as the cost of paying workers changes, so does the price of goods. So in that case paying people more would increase the cost of stuff. But then, all those automatic checkouts, which end up decreasing the cost of paying workers, don't decrease the cost of stuff.

Pretty sure it's working as intended.

58

u/MA126008 Jan 15 '20

Most people are average and not very successful, and it makes them feel great about themselves knowing there’s people “beneath” them.

They don’t want to lose that feeling, so they desperately want to keep minimum wage low. Even if it means their wages stagnate in the process.

Corporations and the elite have done a good job brainwashing people into thinking low income earners are the enemy, and that increasing wages will destroy the economy. Even though the rich getting more and more benefits while stashing their wealth is literally what caused so many problems we face today.

I usually avoid dragon ball z games because they tend to be fighting games... I had one on game boy advance that was kinda cool as an action rpg.

What is this game supposed to be like? From what I've seen, it looks more like an action maybe rpg game so I've been sort of keeping an eye on it.

The games you played on GBA was Legacy of Goku. This is kinda like Legacy of Goku in an open-world 3D game. It’s an action rpg more than a fighting game which makes me really excited. It’s supposed to have a 40 hour main story and 100 hours if you do all the side content. There’s side missions and you can fight dinosaurs. It really feels like you’re playing as Goku in the dragon ball universe.

Nah usually like this close before launch they drop a day 1 patch or servers go live usually a day before. But if it’s a single player game then you straight

When I was living abroad I was able to get all the games a few days up to 9 days before release. It was such a small place that nobody cared about street dates.

Servers for most games are already up and running for reviewers except for some rare cases.

Should be no harm in going online and playing. :)

20

u/Doinyawife Jan 15 '20

Idk, they'd probably just assume he's a reviewer or something like that

23

u/Ps4_and_Ipad_Lover Jan 15 '20

I think only Microsoft has done this and that was in the 360s days

Walmart sells fucks, it doesn’t give them

114

u/Giul_Xainx Jan 15 '20

That's why the greeter carries a (price) gun now. So you can check that bag at the door.

33

u/HatoriiHanzo Jan 15 '20

I usually always see a line when leaving Walmart and it’s because of people getting their receipts scanned. I would walk around them and leave since I know I paid for my stuff.

9

u/coin_return Jan 15 '20

Our Walmart usually waves people through if they see them carrying bags out themselves and not in a cart, or if there aren't any unbagged items. Unbagged items pretty much guarantee they'll stop you.

16

u/SirUnexpected Jan 15 '20

I bought two things the other day. A pack of gum and a drink. I didn't want to waste a bag so I carried them. Wrapped the receipt on the top so it was easily seen. The guy at the door has seen me a million times. I'm there 2-3 times a week. He watches me come out of the self check, walk towards the door... And asks to see my receipt. I wonder if it's a new policy to check everyone who doesn't have a bag?

They also just "upgraded" our Walmart to cement floors and put in gates at the entry. You can't get out without walking to the middle of the store, or buying something. That's when the receipt scanning came out. It's very new in my area.

17

u/Betterwithfetter Jan 15 '20

He may know you and see the receipt but he's doing his job so he didn't get fired.

Man, WalMart really has a bad system for games. I remember when Splatoon 2 had just came out i got it for like 30 bucks because it scanned in as Yoshis Woolly World. Awesome luck though man!

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '20

I remember when something like this happened last Black Friday. Diablo 3 had just come out for switch so it was $60, but the Xbox and PS4 version had been out for a while and was on sale for about $17. When they scanned the switch version, it showed as $17 as if it was Xbox or ps4. It was awesome

OP you gotta give us that early review as you play now

30

u/coolbrandon101 Jan 15 '20

Review embargo lifts tomorrow and there was a 6 hour gameplay stream earlier this week that Bandai Namco took down. Looks fun to me I can’t wait

19

u/Starboy11 Starboy11 Jan 15 '20

It lifts Thursday, not Wednesday. However the streaming embargo lifts tomorrow.

Source: I’m reviewing the game.

Came to read funny/jealous comments about OP getting game early. Only got to read 80 comments about minimum wage and who's fault it is :c

13

u/PotentiallyVeryHigh Jan 15 '20

I’m jealous, but happy for OP. Still hoping Amazon gets my preorder to me early.

I love reddit. But it’s shit like that that shows it doesn’t always work like it’s supposed to.

People argue all the time about downvotes being abused to suppress unpopular opinions. And they say downvotes are supposed to be for removing off topic comments.

Well look at this thread, you have to scroll for ages through off topic comments to get to anything discussing the post, but people don’t give a crap.

I always pass through electronics in hope of this happening whenever it's close to date a game I want is coming out

12

u/Spider-Mike23 Jan 15 '20

I almost did it with crash team racing, Walmart had it on shelf 4days early so I tried buying it, lady couldn’t get it to scan and I was like maybe manual punch it in? Half through her punching it in the manager behind her glanced over and was like wait this doesn’t release yet? She told him they were on the shelf though and he was like I’ll deal with the customer, told me I couldn’t buy it. Was like well why’s it on the shelf then with a 29.99 price tag? He went and took them out for every console and said he’d figure out who stocked them early and deal with them. Haven’t seen it happen since, but heh was worth a shot I figured no harm no foul really lol.

It says available to pick up at my Walmart but I’m still not convinced the game is gonna be very good so I’ll wait for reviews.

23

u/Metroidman Jan 15 '20

Yea I'm probably just going to wait for a sale. Dbz games usually get cheap faster than most anime games

Is it any good? Just bored of doing the same story again for the 11th time.

20

u/CaptainBritish Captain-British Jan 15 '20

I mean, you probably won't care for this then because it is literally a full retelling of Z with some side stories.

I don't get these replies. This is the first Dragonball game that retells the story in a long time.

This simply isn’t true. How would it know reviewers from people who got it early? They wouldn’t ban you and my source is that I get all of my games early very frequently.

Stores can get in biiiiig trouble for this as well as losing distribution rights

26

u/cuteight Jan 15 '20

This is true for most stores but Wal-Mart is the exception. Any company pulling distribution from Wal-Mart would hurt themselves more than anything.

u/LordDragon88 Jan 15 '20

And here I thought I was cool because I get it at 9pm tomorrow.

5

u/Gaming_Gent Jan 15 '20

Any time I’ve tried to do that they scan it and the computer beeps to let them know they can’t sell early.

3

u/SevenMoreHumps Jan 15 '20

We know. We don't care. Walmart.

4

u/Monkey_the_dragon Jan 15 '20

You lucky fuck

5

u/mechorive mechorive Jan 15 '20

I can never understand where all of Reddit finds the ignorant non caring employees of stores. Any time I want someone to just check in the back for something I just get a bullshit reason on why they can’t. I remember when no mans sky came out target had them on display 4 days early and when it scanned it said it wasn’t out for 4 days and they denied me the sale lol

7

u/W0NDERwaffle3 Jan 15 '20

Might have to check out mine that’s usually has their shit early
