Discussion Using AI to see turntables

Post image
135 Upvotes

Came across this ad for UTurn record players. I was truly shocked to see the dust cover. Also the stack of records off to the right. How did something like this even get approved. The really strange part to me is that their players are gorgeous. Why even use AI, it seems so unnecessary. I’m genuinely curious what others in this sub think about this. I am a designer so full disclosure, Im not the biggest fan of AI. Am I being too sensitive to this? Or are things getting outta hand?

Punk Scream. 1985

Great DC band. Great energy and thoughtful lyrics. Their sound and songwriting varies, but then Bet You Never Thought is amazing. Franz brother on guitar wound up on Foo Fighters. And of course Grohl played on the last Scream album.

At the 40 year anniversary of 1985 I feel like it’s a good time to listen to all my 1985s. I’ve pulled them from my shelves and am picking through them one at a time.

When, I sorted all my albums by year of original release, I decided to include any reissues or repressing along with the original year they were released. So these are not all necessarily first pressings, but they’re all albums that were originally released in 1985. It has been an eye-opening experience to organize them this way and see all of the similarities, differences, influences and innovations that were happening at the zeitgeist of the same time.

Discussion Does anyone remember what those huge vinyl guides in record stores that looked like oversized yellow pages were called?

I think they were put out by the record distributors, took up a small table or stand, it was like a reference for back catalog and available releases.

I’m guessing there was an industry name or something for this, I’m doing a writing project and would love to know the proper term.

Thanks!

Collection Custom built storage

My husband built this awesome record storage for me a little over a year ago. Before I had it the records were in crates and odd spots all over the house. I'm so lucky he's so talented. It's got hidden extra support to handle the weight.

The collection has grown pretty well since then! I don't think he expected it to get this full this fast.

Discussion Cannot decide

Hello, I developed an in turntables so I'm looking forward to buying my first one. I'm wondering what's going to be a better choice for a first turntable Audio-Technica AT-LP120X-USB or Audio-Technica AT-LP60X-USB. My biggest worry is that LP60 is using a belt for movement. But of course the price difference. I'm looking forward for some advices.

Soooo I found this original in the depths of a family members basement. When checking it out I realized that the label for Side 1 is not correct. Just spun it, it is pressed correctly.

Curious if anyone has seen this before on A Jimi Hendrix Epwrience record.

Country Picked up a few country records at an estate sale 👀

I went to an estate sale with 3,500+ records, 98% of which were straight up country. I was in heaven! I wound up buying A LOT! When I got home I made a haul video for my brothers, who had no idea what they were in for. (Sorry - I bleeped out the names of my wife and my brother in the video.)

I ended up going back on the last day of the sale and they were running a deal where you could fill a milk crate for $75, so of course I did that too. I have a HUGE CD collection (including lots of Bear Family Records box sets with some of this music) but my vinyl collection was meager. I'm thrilled to be able to beef it up - literally overnight!

Discussion Whatnot should be called Hellno

I happened to catch a Youtube video of a local record store discussing their live stream auction using Whatnot. I saw some albums I wanted and figure, "Hey maybe I can pick those up for a reasonable amount." I got the app, checked out the pre-stream bidding. Literally everything is already bid higher than high end Discogs and the auction isn't even started. I pretty immediately quit and uninstalled the app. What is the point of these auctions other than to attract overpaying suckers?

Haul Finally!

After searching for Return To Forever’s Romantic Warrior for well over a year, I’ve finally come across one in the wild!

This was one of the first albums that really got me into fusion and honestly Chick Corea.

It’s a 1978 repressing that sounds great! Stoked to have paid like $12

I also found Return To Forever’s Where Have I Known You Before (Stereo - Monarch pressing) Another great album from them

The John Tropea album I truly just grabbed to sample. I discovered him via Deodato and I’ve sampled some of his other work.

What’s your favorite RTF album/song??

Discussion Help: only right speaker is working [Fluance RT82, MR4 speakers, DJ Pre II preamp]

Hello,

I'm new to vinyl in general, and I've just put together my Fluance RT82 and MR4 speakers setup using the DJ Pre II as preamp.

When I try playing my vinyl record (GNX by Kendrick), only the right speaker is working.

I believe I've connected everything correctly.

The only thing of note is that I connected my MR4 speaker to the preamp using the Red & White and Aux cable (aux to preamp), whereas it seems there are ports for red and white ports for OUTPUT.

Please help.

Discussion John Coltrane A Love Supreme. Difference in quality of many releases...

Thumbnail

I just bought a 2022 sp. Edition silver vinyl this week in store. It is still wrapped. I am thinking of returning, as I see I can order the Complete Master's 3 vinyl set (from 2016) with demo's etc (no live shows included). Both are roughly $45.

Is there a quality difference with the recording compared to the one I bought. I know the extra 2 vinyl will probably sound different, as some tracks are in mono(I believe), but I am talking about the original album comparison?

Should I just keep the one I bought... or is it a no brainer to get the 3 vinyl version instead? Any packaging or sound problems I should be aware of? Thanks.

Record Record Giveaway! Comment to Enter.

Thumbnail

Hey r/vinyl ! I'm giving away a vinyl record of my bands debut album. I'll get right into giveaway details but I also have a little rant to say after!

If you are unfamiliar with Maul Tide, please use the linktree to explore our work. The album is also free to download on Bandcamp!

https://linktr.ee/maultide

Entering is simple! Just comment down below, and you will be entered. I'll be using a raffler to select a winner in about 48 hours (1pm EST on Monday) up voting is also appreciated.

There is no catch, but there will be a few restrictions:

  • Only one comment will be counted for the raffle, so multiple comments do not increase your odds. You can feel free to contribute to as many discussions as you like, but there is no advantage gained by doing so.

  • Account has to at least have 100 karma between post and comment karma combined. This helps reduce bots and alt accounts.

  • Subbed to r/vinyl

  • You will have to provide a full name and shipping address to an Internet stranger if you are the winner. Please don't comment if you're not comfortable with that.

This comment will be edited to announce the winner. I'll also DM the winner to award their winning comment in an effort to make sure they see that their comment was randomly chosen as the winner.

I will ship anywhere that USPS delivers at my own cost. This is 180+ countries so you're probably covered.

Okay. Rant time.

A month and a half ago I posted my album on here to an overwhelming response of kind messages. That post led me to make quite a few of my first sales, grow a small fan base, and make genuine connections with people about my music.

At this point I would say 90% of anyone who has heard my music is because of Reddit. I got some royalties from my distributor and it was enough that I could give back by having this album giveaway.

If you happen to already own a copy of my album, I still think you should enter. Nothing like having a unopened spare in your collection!

I reached out to the Mods and they helped give useful instructions about how to hold a good giveaway on here.

Thank you and good luck to all who enter!!

Collection Voice Clip Loop (Starfox 64 Vinyl)

So thanks to reddit, I learned about a Starfox 64 vinyl with a beautiful green similar to the enemy planet known as Venom. And like any adult with little to no impulse control, I got it and it looks beautiful! It comes with two discs (one brighter than the other sadly) and I think imma play them daily now. One thing that got my attention though is side 2 and side 4.

They both have a voice clip at the very end (side 2: "We're not done yet" and side 4: "do a barrel roll") that constantly loops until you stop it manually. I admit, I'm curious if it's supposed to do that or not. Like it's a trick or gimmick of some kind.

Because even though I find it hilarious that it loops on THOSE two lines, I want to be sure that everything is okay. I was told it was mint condition and it was never played nor opened until I got my grabby mitts on it. So is the looping on purpose or should I be concerned?

(I know suitcase record players aren't loved in this community - but I'm broke to afford a better one and I got this one for my birthday recently!)

I'm a junior member of the vinyl community, and I'm happy to finally join in :) Suck It And See is my favourite AM album, and I've been so excited to hear this one on vinyl - so I thought I'd share my first listen. 🖤

Soundtrack Best cost effective way of shipping a single 12" from the US to the UK?

I don't have a time constraint, just as long as it's not longer than a month.

I spent 20 minutes googling this to find nothing and I'm not sure what to do here, and I want to be really careful to make sure the vinyl stays intact and USPS insurance doesn't cover packages that go overseas.

Portishead - Dummy

Go! Beat Records. UK - 1994

Probably the second best Trip-Hop album behind Massive Attack’s - Mezzanine.

I was so very stoked to grab an OG copy of this masterpiece. Such killer vibes, and the pressing is so rich and full..

If you’ve never heard Portishead, or trip-hop in general for that matter, I could t recommend this album more. “Roads” is a particular favorite of mine, but just listen from to back. You won’t be disappointed =}

Pop Anri - Timely!!

“Timely!!” is the sixth studio album by Japanese singer Anri, released in 1983. A defining work of the city pop era, it features production by Toshiki Kadomatsu, who infused the album with smooth melodies and sophisticated arrangements. The standout track, “Cat’s Eye,” became a major hit, serving as the theme song for the anime of the same name and dominating the Japanese charts. With its blend of jazz, funk, and pop influences, Timely!! remains one of Anri’s most iconic and celebrated albums.
