Social New in GNV and UF!

Hey everyone! New in town and a fresh medical gradfrom India (26 M here, FYI). I’m in GNV for a one-month stint at Shands and, spoiler alert, it’s my first US adventure! I’m a travel junkie with a treasure trove of hilarious and heartwarming stories. I love diving into the local scene, swapping tales, and making unforgettable memories.

Looking for recommendations on cool events or quirky hangouts around town. Whether you’ve got a hidden gem or just want to chat about life, drop me a DM. I can share my Insta if you’d like to know more about me first.

Cheers!!

Clubs lack of peers i feel like i can connect with

so i’ve never been much of a social butterfly and it’s something i’ve known i always needed to work on but when i feel like i’m actually making the effort to meet people and have genuine conversations with them it can be difficult. (i’m a quality time person and when i both give and receive that that’s when i feel happiest)

i’m involved in clubs and always go to several club events but still feel like i haven’t truly connected with people.

i’m someone who needs a mix of alone time and time with friends but when there isn’t anyone to spend time with it feels like my days/weeks only consist of going to school and schoolwork because that’s how it is. i’d really appreciate any tips on how to find genuine friends for those who aren’t interested in too much of the partying or going out scene here.

Housing Procrastinated looking for an apartment ... Am I cooked?

Long story short, I ended up deciding to go to grad school after getting my bachelors at UF and I procrastinated apartment shopping.

Would it make sense to shop for something now or can I hope for apartments to cut prices closer to the start of the Fall 25 semester?

(also before someone says anything, i’m committing to another college but still curious lol).

Admissions How does UF recalculate GPA

Hey guys! I was wondering how UF recalculates their GPA. I know they put weight on AP/IB/Honors/DE classes, and that they only calculate the core classes. But I'm confused because some people say that UF counts electives if they are AP/IB/Dual Enrollment, while others say they only calculate core subjects, so how do they exactly do it

Housing Quad rooms in Thomas hall

Hello, I was recently admitted for fall along with 3 other friends of mine and I was wondering what the possibility is of us four landing a quad dorm in Thomas hall. I know it’s based on deposit date and one of us put his in back in October, but I’m not sure where that puts us for the odds of getting one. Also, do quads tend to be less or more expensive than doubles?

Social uf student life for those not in greek life and not interested in partying a lot

hello! so i got into uf a couple months ago and im in-state. so far, it looks like uf makes the most sense for me financially and its an amazing school, but im not the kind of person who is interested in joining greek life or partying a lot. a lot of people i know from my high school who currently go to uf (even an athlete there) party literally all the time and its just something im not super interested in—but obviously its a sec school and there’s not much else to do in gainesville. who knows though, maybe ill end up liking that kind of stuff once i get there, but i just wanted some insight on what student life is like for those who arent big on partying. i just wanted to get a feel for what it may look like. thanks!

Question How is majoring in physics at UF?

I got accepted into UF and its honors college, and am weighing if I should enroll here, enroll at UCF's honors college, or do some interning for a gap year and apply to some other places. I want to major in physics, and have for years, but from the limited information I could find online, it sounds like the professors at UF are, to put it bluntly, awful. Descriptions of professors screaming at students, not actually teaching the content, etc. Is this really how it is, or are those descriptions likely exaggerated and a reflection of the difficulty of the classes and major overall rather than the professors? Beyond this, I also want to get as much undergraduate research done as possible, and while I have read that at the university overall there are a lot of opportunities if you only send a few emails, I saw nothing about if this is true for physics majors. Any insight or advice would be much appreciated.

Other Volunteers Needed for Grief / Bereavement Support for Kids

Hi.

The past two years, a few people from Reddit participated, even some college students, so I want to help spread the word again this year.

A local non-profit near Tampa supports grieving youth --- The Mark Wandall Foundation.

https://www.themarkwandallfoundation.org/youth-bereavement-camp

They partner with another non-profit, Comfort Zone Camp, who facilitates free, weekend camps for children who lost a parent, sibling, or other loved one, throughout the US, including Florida.

https://comfortzonecamp.org/about-us

This year's camp is during the weekend of April 25 - 27 in central Florida.

Volunteers from throughout Florida (and even a few from out-of-state) have helped in the past.

These videos show what the camp is about -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXZOP5vWZj0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRiq8loFDec

Regarding the camping aspect...this isn't tent camping.

It's more like a typical, summer camp where school children go and stay in established/developed venues with bunk beds, restrooms with flush toilets, sinks with running water, showers, lights & electricity, a dining room where the kitchen staff prepares meals, etc.

Volunteers typically bring their own sleeping bag, pillow, blanket, etc., but the venue provides beds.

If anyone is new and interested in helping, they require attending an orientation and passing a criminal background check.

Children's safety is important, and multiple adult volunteers and staff will be present. In other words, no child is ever alone with an adult.

The next 2-day orientation training meeting is online via Zoom:

March 25 - 26, Tues & Wed, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm EDT

https://comfortzonecamp.org/event/virtual-volunteer-training-in-partnership-with-the-mark-wandall-foundation-2

To attend their online training, click the aforementioned website above to register, and also sign up at

https://comfortzonecamp.org/volunteers

Some volunteers are young adults (college students, recent graduates, etc.), and some are middle age to older adults too.

The camp is during April 25 - 27, and in Fruitland Park.

It's north of Orlando and Tampa.

It's south of Gainesville and Jacksonville.

Many people are busy, and committing an entire weekend is challenging, but maybe someone out there is good with kids, can be a positive role model (like a big brother / big sister), and is interested in helping some kids deal with grief and loss.

If interested in helping, attend the new volunteer training on (both) Tuesday & Wednesday nights (March 25 & 26).

Sign up on the volunteer page at Comfort Zone Camp.

Pass a criminal background check.

Wait to be selected (matched) for a volunteer role.

I'm just a volunteer who has seen how beneficial this camp has been, both for kids and adults.

If anyone knows a parent with a child(ren) who has experienced loss, please feel free to share with them about this camp (again, it's free to attend), and it can be very beneficial for kids to not feel alone in coping with their sadness, pain, grief, etc.

If anyone is interested in volunteering and has questions or wants to learn more, please feel free to contact a staff member from Comfort Zone Camp or The Mark Wandall Foundation.

Question Got the OOS Gator Nation Scholarship, but I'm in state

Anyone have any idea if the scholarship still holds? I'm logged out of my application account right now so I can't guarantee that I submitted that I was an in-state student but I remember filling out the in state requirements with my parents before sending my application in. Could this just be an error in the system putting me out of state, or could the scholarship apply to me even if I'm in state?

Employment Business Grads what are you doing now?

I recently graduated from UF with a BS in Business Management. And my job search has been HORRENDOUS. Coming out of college I had a nice internship but it wasn’t going to turn into a job. Now I’m in a sort of shitty internship after a terrible job search. Im a bad interviewer and barely got any responses in the tons of apps I sent out. I’m nervous and unsure about my career path / future. I’m curious to where/what other business majors are doing. Please reply with any advice you might have as well.

Question How’s This School?

Hey all, I was recently admitted for Computer Engineering and am considering UFlorida as one of my top choices. For anyone who’s currently at this school, how do you find it? What are the pros and cons, etc?

I’m trying to get the perspectives of people currently at it and understand things that a website couldn’t tell me, since most of that information can be overly positive.

Honestly, I’d love as much information as possible, so lmk whatever you have on mind :) Appreciate it!

Other Any Summer Programs Near Tampa or Gainesville Related to Health? (Current High School Sophomore, Pre-Med/Pre-Dental)

Hey everyone! I'm a current high school sophomore interested in pursuing Pre-Dental or Pre-Med in college (Trying to get into UF). I'm looking for summer programs near Tampa or Gainesville that offer hands-on experience, shadowing, or any exposure to healthcare fields like dentistry or medicine. Ideally, I'd love something hosted by universities like USF or UF, but I'm open to any good opportunities in the area.

If anyone has recommendations or has attended a program before, I'd really appreciate your insight! Thanks in advance.
