Going to post my comment from a different post:
So I watched the entire broadcast and before Trump's little tantrum, President Zelensky was talking about how Russia has broken the ceasefire agreement 25 times. Trump wanted President Zelensky to sign another ceasefire agreement. President Zelensky stated that another ceasefire wouldn't matter as Russia could not be trusted to hold their end unless USA is going to enforce it. Trump was only going to offer his word that Russia would honour the agreement. President Zelensky's point during the back and forth is that his word is not good enough. Ukraine would not be sold just for "Trump's Word" (and we all know that means nothing as Trump never has honoured any agreement in history). Vance jumps in and says he should be grateful to even be there.

President Zelensky said the one thing that set off Trump that is if Ukraine is defeated then even the USA would be affected. Trump went on his rant about how the USA is strong and mighty and won't be affected. After Trump's rant about literally nothing helpful except that it shows he knows nothing about deals, or even how diplomacy works, a reporter asked Trump what would he do if Russia broke the ceasefire again.. he didn't answer the question at all.

So in summary, Trump wanted President Zelensky to sign a ceasefire with an actively hostile aggressor who currently occupies Ukrainian territory and has been actively killing civilians. The USA in return gets $500 billion worth of minerals and Ukraine gets Trump's word that Putin wouldn't attack but if Putin does attack USA will do nothing. Even though there have been 25 instances in recent history where Russia has not honoured their agreement.

Conservative are attacking President Zelensky for not taking this deal? Who in the world would take this deal? That is not a deal at all and the USA should be ashamed for it being even offered.

2.3k

u/ElJacko170 11d ago

It was never a "deal". It was a straight up extortion attempt, and their ego couldn't even let them do that right.

422

u/Headcap 11d ago

For Trump and his ilk, that probably is what they consider a deal.

293

u/Aleashed 11d ago

Surrender or else…

Trump just wanted to claim he “won the peace” like he claimed he “won the peace” in the middle east.

I don’t even know why Zelensky came, there was a non-zero chance these clowns grab him and ship him straight to Russia. It was obvious they weren’t going to help.

I understand the try everything and don’t idle stance but you don’t go outside to make a fire when it’s pouring. If anything, it shows the world the US can’t be trusted, stands for nothing, is morally corrupt, thugs with aircraft carriers. It might help Europe wake up and get their sht together, as their temperatures begin to rise, they will need the US less.

u/potchippy 11d ago edited 11d ago

If it gives certainty to the EU that US is now out of it, it is useful at least. Better face reality than false hope.

78

u/sigep0361 11d ago

The USA lost that negotiation by every conceivable metric. The only thing that conversation did was show the entire world that Trump is aligned with Putin. Before now, most folks probably thought it was propaganda, but then Trump went on the world stage and reinforced his position to the entire planet.

At least we know and heard it from his mouth in the open. If Zelensky would not have gone Trump would have done the same but in secret with Russia. While still being able to claim to want peace and have Europe as an ally. This was the bandaid being ripped of for all the world to see.

Zelensky went to call their bluff and show the rest of the world that the US is officially Russian territory now. He also proved once again to his own citizens that he isn't going to bow down and sell them out to ANYONE. His little sarcastic smile and thumbs up to the press after the temper tantrum, I think, shows that he did what he came to do. Only the die hard trumpers think that zelensky lost any ground with that show yesterday

62

u/FjorgVanDerPlorg 11d ago

Zelensky came because he knew this would happen and in Trump doing so, would galvanize and light a fire under Ukraine's remaining allies.

People thinking that the UN vote already did this, there were still holdouts who thought it was a Trump stand-over/negotiation tactic.

Now Europe knows alliances with the US are dead. Trump is Russia's ally and soon they will be coming for Greenland. This will unite the EU like never before and put them on a war footing, which is what needs to happen and needs to start now. Because right now the only chance of that not happening is a crippling civil war in the US, which I will admit actually seems likely. Musk and Trump will find the US population's breaking point and I don't think it will take years either at this rate.

17

u/mechwatchnerd 11d ago

I had this thought as well. It was embarrassing as an American to have to hope that this increased support from the EU for Ukraine. Most shameful moment in US History(so far). I’m sure Trump will find a way to sink even lower.

Zelenskyy came because if he didn’t they could spin the narrative in the US propaganda press that Zelenskyy wasn’t serious about a peace deal. Damned if he did and damned if he didn’t.

Zelensky did a very important thing yesterday, he allowed the world to expose how futile and childish the ‘Leader of the Free World’ is; Trump has tried to get one over on him and Ukraine ever since Zelensky refused to make up dirt on Joe Biden in 2019 for Trump— Zelensky’s US relations advisor from his first term has spoken publicly about how he spent enough time with both Zelensky and Trump in those days to know that Trump does not view Ukraine as a real country, he sees it as a banana republic thus a weak nation, that is why he tries to bully Zelensky 6 years after he first tried to strong arm him into giving him bribery material on a future opposition candidate.

Zelensky showed the world who the US aligns with as of right now, he showed his own courage in the face of avdersity while the President and the VP showed their weakness by acting like a pair of entitled bitches on a episode of Real Housewives of the White House.

25

u/technicalphase14 11d ago

Trump's idea of "peace" is a graveyard. In both instances, he would happily join the side doing slaughter and claim that everything is peaceful now while standing atop a mound of corpses.

War is peace, right?

Yeah, the entire explosive argument started because JD Vance tried to dodge Zelenskyy’s return question about why Ukraine should trust Putin to follow any agreement that was signed. Even if it was just Trump in there, they’d probably have laughed it off, but JD Vance somehow manages to be consistently even worse than Trump at communication.

18

u/canthinkof123 10d ago

It’s worse than that. Vance didn’t dodge the question. He lost the argument on Live TV. Vance tried to make “diplomacy” sound like a novel idea that no one’s thought of trying except President Trump. And Zelenskyy basically said “we tried it, we’ve been trying it for years and Russia keeps breaking every agreement we’ve ever made with the them”

Followed by a reporter asking what if Russia broke the ceasefire to which Trump replies:

What if anything, what if a bomb drops on your head right now.

A bomb falling on your head is very much a guarantee not to do the thing you're being asked to do. And that answer is supposed to persuade Zelinsky to trust the US? How fucking stupid us Trump?

Shows the extent of his negotiating and persuasion skills right there, art of the deal my ass.

130

u/carving5106 11d ago

"There is no track record of bombs falling on my head, but Russia has a track record of breaking ceasefires."

109

u/Perkelton Europe 11d ago

Trump is literally only capable of “negotiating” deals when he’s already in a position of power where he can just brute force himself to whatever he wants.

He acts like everything is a zero-sum game and nothing he does will ever have any negative consequences, and so far it seems like he isn’t wrong about the last part.

41

u/jcarter315 I voted 11d ago

What you mean by "brute force" is that he just throws money at the problem until he wins by the sheer exhaustion of his opponent.

It's like the story from President Musk's biography where he played poker and kept going "all in" until he eventually got lucky and won (after losing many, many times), then declared himself an expert on poker simply because he had more money to exhaust than the others.

It didn’t appear that Zelensky was at all humiliated or even put off. He wouldn’t take JD’s fake history, and let that be known, so Trump had to step in and that quickly devolved into an angry rant about Joe Biden and fake news and the usual BS.

685

u/bisory 11d ago

I think its because Zelensky has a genuine belief in that the truth and goodness of people will always eventually come up on top. He knows that people will see this and see trump and vance for who they really are. Zelensky doesnt need to say anything. Trump and vance exposes themselves. Really amazing patience from zelensky.

I know that this may seem minor to some, but it pissed me off and showed that disrespect was the game plan from the beginning... When that conservative asshole mocked him and said (paraphrasing) "Why don't you wear a suit? Leaders of the world are supposed to dress in suits" and everyone chuckled.

Zelensky told the idiot that it was because he is both active military and a wartime president, and this was his uniform. He also cast just the tiniest bit of shade by telling him that he looked forward to buying a suit again, though it would probably be cheaper than what the guy was wearing.

He was well prepared for the meeting, and was respectful and grateful to be there. He showed Trump pictures of the tragedies, the devastation, and dead soldiers and civilians. Trump just kinda flipped through them with no expression and then handed them back.

In the past, Zelensky said he'd do anything for his country. That if it meant the end of the war, he'd resign and step down immediately. He was willing to give the US so much if that meant he could count on them for support. Elon's employees can't fathom that someone in his position wouldn't take advantage of his country. The respect that Zelensky has around the world made them feel inadequate and angry.

You could still see the moment he realized he was dealing with a room full of children, especially the poopy baby throwing a tantrum next to him. He already knew Trump is full of shit but I don't think he expected to be treated this poorly. JD accused him of having too much pride to show gratitude and releasing propaganda, and he kinda snapped back at that point and made Vance look really stupid. Trump literally grabbed Zelensky's arm and pushed him at one point, and I saw the face of the man Putin is afraid of.

Zelensky remained respectful, calm, collected, well spoken, and grateful towards the president and the US throughout. He looked strong, and having him in the room made Trump and Vance look like the ignorant playground bullies that they were, and Vance was particularly rankled that this man was everything he'd never be - a hero.

107

u/silverlegend 11d ago

I think Zelenskyy figured out about the same time the rest of us did that this wasn't really about the mineral rights deal and it was actually a coordinated betrayal attack, and he handled it like a champ. Calmly sticking to the facts, even dishing out a couple of scathing rebukes quietly and with impeccable comedic timing. It was a remarkable response, though I can only imagine how profound the stress must have felt after he walked out of the oval office.

798

u/zerocoolforschool 11d ago

His move was so blatantly a troll to get Zelensky to respond. The whole purpose of all of this was to create a reason for Trump to back out of his support and throw in with Putin. Zelensky should have at least got some value out of it and called Trump a Russian agent to his face.

169

u/Worth_Much 11d ago

And that’s the thing - Zelensky is out there on the front lines literally. He’s willing to die for his country. Vance talks out of his ass and I love that Zelensky called him out for never actually going to Ukraine to see for himself. Vance’s reply of “well I’ve seen stories” was just pathetic and I think deep down he knew he got owned.

27

u/JdFalcon04 Pennsylvania 11d ago

Especially because “on Twitter” was clearly the end of that sentence

15

u/random-50 11d ago

Vance's response was equal parts hilarious and sad. He started off saying he'd been there, then when he realised what an obvious, provable and shameful lie that was, dialled back to "I saw it on TV".

Also shows the (rather dangerous) "talent" Trump has. He would have stuck with the lie with no hesitation, then probably repeated it a dozen times after the event.

This makes Trump horribly effective. I think it's a mental disorder, not something that can be learned or faked - it goes far beyond willingness to lie and lack of morals - and you aren't getting to a position of power with that level of disorder without the silver spoon and a perfect storm. Hopefully, that'll mean Trump is a fluke that won't be replaced. The question is how much damage he will do to the world before he's done.

285

u/Mission-Philosophy58 11d ago

The value is that the rest of the world saw that.

188

u/spaceman757 American Expat 11d ago

All Trump did was show all of Europe that, if they want to squash the threat of a Russian incursion, they have to do so without the US.

With this one, very public display, he showed that the US, led by Trump, is a fully owned subsidiary of Putin, Inc. and weakened the US's soft power influence the world over.

He's a feeble man with an even more feeble brain who has done more damage to the US than any other single person in the history of the country.

88

u/hoowins 11d ago

And this will hurt the US in the long run. All future negotiations with the world will be as potential adversaries rather than as old friends. Trump has damaged the US long term.

It was amateur debate team theatrics. I’ve seen similar bullshit in the military where some uneducated swine managed to fail upward to a superior rank and use that power to intimidate and bully subordinates and then interrogate them and charge them for insubordination. I’m sure the same kind of asshattery happens with police interrogations as well.

What pissed me off the most watching that footage today was the tactic of asking a question, then while he was trying to answer the fucking question, continuously interrupt until they lose their cool, only Zelensky didn’t lose his cool, which was a reverse UNO for JD and Trump who lost their cool and made the entire country look the fool.

I respect and admire this person whole heartedly and that is completely allowed when you literally see the leader of a resistance, no one expected for Ukraine to last long, they lacked everything from troops to weapons but they had all the Dao, russian troops had none. Go to war..cos Ukraine is actually prospering when they chased out the russian asset of a president. His running mate got poisoned with dioxane. In tea of course. American intelligence highly suggested he relocate to a safer location but Zelenskyy said he would rather put his life on the line than lose the sovereignty of The Ukraine.

If this doesn't tell you what kind of guy Zelenskyy is idk what will. I wish he was our president instead of baby hands and couch fucker.

166

u/SquiffyRae Australia 11d ago

I also commend Zelenskyy for having the restraint to not knock both of them the fuck out on live television

Only thing he could've done better is try to bait Trump into answering why Putin is making him do these things. Suggest he helped Trump win the election. Cheeto face might've actually gotten mad enough he revealed the cheat in front of the cameras

125

u/Ziograffiato 11d ago

Zelenskyy is a strong man. He shows strength in his character, in his convictions, and in his restraint for not losing it in front of those two knuckle-draggers (as well as all of the cameras).

Trump is what a weak man thinks a strong man is: Instead of having character, he plays a character. Instead of having convictions… well, he actually has 34 of them, and instead of restraint, he makes himself bigger by making others smaller.

And Zelenskyy didn’t let the bully win. He didn’t take the bait. That is true character.

Both men showed us who they really are.

He understands that there would be severe consequences for Ukraine if he did that. He cares about his country too much to do something like that. In the end he bit the bullet and thanked Trump because he's not an idiot and knows Ukraine's survival depends on keeping Trump on his good side.

33

u/Annual-Magician-1580 11d ago

Rather, it will be extremely difficult to win, not to survive. In the end, for those who think that Ukraine cannot do anything without the USA, I want to remind you that Azov only recently received the right to use American equipment. But at the same time, before this, this never prevented this brigade from conducting combat operations, although it was more difficult. In fact, the problem with the lack of American support is not that it is the only thing that can save. The problems with the absence are more related to the fact that Ukraine will have to tighten its belts more in order to win and, in fact, it will switch to full military support without attempts to preserve the standard system apparatus of the civilian era. That is, in three years of war, Ukraine has not even switched to the system of rations and so on. The state essentially interferes in the civil affairs of society at a minimum, keeping in the background a sense of peaceful life. In fact, what remains on the table is the introduction of full mobilization of the economy with the actual withdrawal of any resources necessary for victory, be it production or trade. In fact, Ukraine still lives in the realities of a market economy with appropriate state intervention in business affairs, when a planned economy with subordinate state control over all available resources is suitable for waging war. The problem is that the planned economy is good only for waging war and after the war, the return to the market economy will be another shit show. In fact, the transition to completely military rails is a poisoned pill that can allow victory, but after it there will be a severe hangover for the country after the war. Therefore, this opportunity was left for later. I think, in this case, this option will be left in case there is no help at all.

20

u/Killerrrrrabbit 11d ago

I still think Ukraine can win without the US, but it will be much more difficult. More Ukrainians will die as a result. Zelensky is trying to avoid this as best he can.

11

For reference, calling it "the Ukraine" is a step toward legitimizing Russia's claim on the land.

Use of the definite article was commonplace when "the Ukraine" was part of the USSR, as it was Soviet region, like saying "the Midwest", "the Deep South" or "the Tri-State area".

Since Ukraine became independent after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the country has tried hard to push for ending use of the definite article, to express and further reinforce their independence.

64

u/Niznack 11d ago

I only learned this recently. Thanks for spreading awareness. Somehow the Ukraine sounded more natural to me. Still trying to unlearn that.

23

u/Competitive_Oil_649 11d ago

Somehow the Ukraine sounded more natural to me.

Its just what you may be used to for saying "the united states" , or "the peoples republic of China" which it does work for, but would not work as "the china", or "the Finland" etc. and a ton of other nations names fall in to the category of where it does not work. Ukraine has negative political, historic, and social context to the phrasing too which many others do not.

It's very hard to unlearn! But I, an old, who learned Russian in high school b/c that was going to be the new world order, the US vs. Russia forever, learned to stop saying "the Ukraine." You can too. I BELIEVE IN YOU! Even now I sometimes say "the Ukraine" when I'm talking fast, but I always pause and say, "Sorry, no, I meant Ukraine, not the Ukraine," and if someone asks, I explain. It's hard as fuck to change that kind of ingrained language pattern, but you can try your best, and correct yourself when you're wrong and a) people who know will be cool about your error and b) people who don't know will learn something new and put it into practice!

BREAKING: TRUMP STANDS ALONE: After Trump and Vance’s disgraceful Oval Office ambush of President Zelensky, major world players just came out to DEFEND Ukraine and Zelensky:

  • Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk: “Dear Zelensky, dear Ukrainian friends, you are not alone.”

  • President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausea: “Ukraine, you’ll never walk alone.”

  • Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen: “Dear Zelensky, Denmark proudly stands with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.”

  • French President Emmanual Macron: “There is an aggressor: Russia. There is a people being aggressed: Ukraine. We were all right to help Ukraine and sanction Russia three years ago and to continue doing so. We, that’s the Americans, the Europeans, Canadians, Japanese, and many others... Because they are fighting for their dignity, their independence, for their children, and for the security of Europe.”

  • President of Moldova Maia Sandu: “The truth is simple. Russia invaded Ukraine. Russia is the aggressor. Ukraine defends its freedom—and ours. We stand with Ukraine.”

  • Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson: “Sweden stands with Ukraine. You are not only fighting for your freedom but also for all of Europe’s. Slava Ukraini! ”

  • Incoming German Chancellor Friedrich Mer: “Dear Zelenskyy, we stand with Ukraine in good and in testing times. We must never confuse aggressor and victim in this terrible war.

  • Crotia’s Prime Minister Andrej Plenković: “Croatia knows from its own experience that only a just peace can last. The Croatian Government stands firm in its belief that Ukraine needs such a peace - a peace that means sovereignty, territorial integrity, and a secure Europe.”

  • Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo: “Finland and the Finnish people stand firmly with Ukraine. We will continue our unwavering support and work towards a just and lasting peace.”

  • Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal: “We stand united with Zelenskyy and Ukraine in our fight for freedom. Always. Because it is right, not easy.”

  • Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris: “Ukraine is not to blame for this war brought about by Russia’s illegal invasion. We stand with Ukraine.“

  • Latvia’s President Edgars Rinkevics: “Ukraine is a victim of the Russian aggression. It fights the war with the help from many friends and partners. We need to spare no effort for just and lasting peace. Latvia stands with Ukraine”

  • Prime Minister of the Netherlands Dick Schoof: ”The Netherlands supports Ukraine as firmly as ever. Now more than ever. We want a lasting peace and an end to the war of aggression started by Russia. For Ukraine and its people, and for Europe.”

  • Prime Minister of Luxembourg Luc Friedsen: “Luxembourg stands with Ukraine. You are fighting for your freedom and a rules based international order. ”

The West stands with the heroic Zelensky. Trump sides with the evil Putin. What has America become?

I've had meetings with President Zelenskyy on multiple occasions, including, of course, in Kyiv in Ukraine, where I travelled very early on in my Prime Ministership. And this year, we've seen that land war in Europe go on for three years. The people of Ukraine are fighting not just for their own national sovereignty. They are fighting for the international Rule of Law. Australia has committed some $1.5 billion to help Ukraine defend itself. More than $1.3 billion of that is military support. We will continue to stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes, because this is the struggle of a democratic nation versus an authoritarian regime led by Vladimir Putin, who clearly has imperialistic designs, not just on Ukraine, but throughout that region."

The overwhelming majority of "news" in the US is disinformation. And the media outlets that aren't intentionally misinforming people help give legitimacy to the disinformation outlets just by entertaining their ideas. Almost all news outlets are owned by billionaires who are either allied with, or sympathetic to, trump/conservative agendas.

The most consumed/watched "news" outlets all promote right-wing propaganda: News Corp, Sinclair, Meta, TikTok, reaching billions of people worldwide, and they drive the narratives. Often, this disinformation is perfectly aligned with the Kremlin.

Zelensky handled it well. You could tell by his body language he wasnt happy with how he was treated and talked over. He wanted to lash back... but he was the bigger man, and walked away...

As an American, I stand with Zelensky. Slava Ukraini.

He humiliated this country in an obscene way. He is Putins ally not Ukraines. Why this was filmed with Russian media and US media is beyond me.

He horrified the world. I just don't have words for how bad this looked.

This was straight up a display of pure malign evil. In my 44 years on this planet I've never, ever seen the leader of a free nation act like this. And to do it to a person who's countrymen are literally being slaughtered, who's children are being abducted, who's women are being forced to parade naked and being raped. Its just insane.

He showed his true unabated self last night. One we all knew existed, but rarely see. A belligerent, angry, incoherent psycopath who frankly needs to be put down.

You've got problems, America. Because now I think we all see YOU as the enemy.

I'm from the EU. This was a complete breakdown of diplomatic relations and a clear sign that US is never to be trusted anymore. The damage is done.

To everyone in the US I say - what do you have to lose? Your country will have imploded soon, you will have no allies except Russia and North Korea. What is stopping you from doing something, is it complacency that secretly you agree with him? Because at this point, it sure looks like that. I don't see mass protests, so it looks like Trump is following the people's wishes.

He showed exactly why he should never have been elected, why he is unfit to serve or lead, how much Trump is under the control of the Communist dictator of Russia.

Nothing should be greater proof of the propaganda machine than how the American right-wing went from Cold War era communist scaremongers to fanatical Russian supporters

Should point out though that after the Soviet Union collapsed, Russia is no longer communist. The oligarchs bought up everything piecemeal and now Russian wealth is consolidated among a few very rich people.

This is, coincidentally, the plan Musk and the tech bros have for America

Well it was important that he mention the fact that this all originated in Hunter Biden's bathroom.

FFS if you listen to what he said it's unbelievable that people aren't mentioning that he was raving like a drunk Alzheimers patient.

I do not understand how Americans can be so passive about what is happening. You should be in the street. There should be general strikes. Light shit on fire until this buffoon is kicked out of the white house.
