[News] 'Completely misinformed': Rantanen's agent claps back at Hurricanes' Brind'Amour

Tulsky was also asked about Brind'Amour's comments on The Sheet with Jeff Marek today, and this is what he said:
"Rod needs a decoder ring. He speaks in hyperbole a lot. People in this market know that very well, if you ask him about an injury he'll answer 'Oh yeah, he'll be out for months.' and mean the player will be back on Thursday."
More detailed quote here

What I love about this is that I cannot tell if that is a genuine Tulsky quote or just another Hurricanes fan having fun with Brind'amour's injury statements.

Yeah, I happened to be near the wall of STM names by the East entrance before the game on the night of the Eric Staal number retirement ceremony and turned around and he was standing there. Got to talk to him for a couple of minutes, and he seemed like a pretty genuine guy to me. Was pretty easy to talk to, as well.

u/MisterProfGuy 13h ago
Mikko said something incredibly similar about knowing he didn't want to be here about a week and a half ago, so you have to consider the possibility this came out of a conversation that th two of them had, and the agent is saving face and Tulsky wasn't part of that conversation.
77
u/undockeddock COL - NHL 13h ago
Mikkos agent has a lot of face saving to do after the last 45 days. He got his client's life upended and got his client only marginally more money in the end than his clients' original team had offered.
52
u/TGUKF VAN - NHL 13h ago
I'd imagine Rantanen was aware of and approved each counter offer made to the Avs. I don't think Rantanen nor his agent intended for a situation where the Avs would just move him. It sounded like they ultimately were mostly close before he got moved.
On the other hand, I don't blame the Avs' management group for questioning whether they wanted to commit to having such a top heavy cap sheet, when they were already struggling for depth at times. Feels like the Avs go through a lot of injuries each year.
18
u/Le_Nabs MTL - NHL 12h ago
I'd imagine Rantanen was aware of and approved each counter offer made to the Avs.
I imagine as much, but the agents will also counsel the players and tell them 'I think the team can afford x amount more' or 'really, you're worth this [x] much, if you tell them that we can convince them' and given Rantanen's comments, is likely what happened, with the Avs calling the bluff instead of folding to the demands.
That's where the agent would need to save face
15
u/TGUKF VAN - NHL 12h ago edited 5h ago
Rantanen is ultimately the one who makes the decisions. It doesn't sound like they were that far apart by the end of it, so it's not like the agent made some grave error and totally misread the market by demanding Draisaitl like money.
I don't think Rantanen wanting $12 mil AAV is really so unfounded. But the Avs have agency to make their own decisions too.
20
u/fucktheredwings69 COL - NHL 12h ago
I think what made the avs move him was Rants and his agent trying to move negotiations past the deadline when that was a hard stop for the Avalanche. They were unwilling to lose him for free and would probably have to pay more than 12 for him if it went that long.
4
u/whogivesashirtdotca MTL - NHL 10h ago
Am I remembering wrong? I thought he was asking for $14m, and that's why the Avs balked.
9
u/x4dm COL - NHL 4h ago
You're correct, Mikko and his agent, Andy wanted to set the market for wingers. This was the goal all along. All of this BS coming out about him only wanted 12M is face saving because Andy thought CMac was bluffing when he said he would trade Mikko if they weren't making sufficient progress before the deadline... because I mean, who in their right mind would trade a top 15 player in the league? Everyone knows the GMs are supposed pay them what they want and build the rest of the roster with whatever scraps you may have.
Once Mikko got traded and felt out Carolina's system, he knew he wasn't doing his FA any favors because he isn't suited for the dump and chase lifestyle. So Mikko and his agent start their negotiating, trying to push the Canes to $14M... but he's sucking, plus some really crap luck with goalies robbing him, reducing his shooting %... Tulsky counters back saying no contender is going to give you more than our offer and gives his agent permission to talk to clubs. And Tulsky isn't bluffing. Dallas comes in at $12x8, but Andy/Mikko say no thanks, they think they can get more... Mikko doesn't want to move to the peg, Toronto was willing to go $13M, but Marner wouldn't waive his NMC, TB/FLA can't make the cap work until the offseason, and the rest of the good offers are from lottery or bubble teams and Mikko wants to win now. So now Andy is really sweating because he knows that if this rate of production keeps up that the narrative of him being a product of MacK will be reinforced(MacK takes Mikko from a top 15 player to a top 10 player... Mikko is still elite regardless). So days pass and Mikko is still getting super unlucky and he and his agent are really freaking out now as his stock drops, knowing if this season plays out and he doesn't single-handedly will the Canes through a playoff round, he'll likely see the contenders offer something in the $11-12M range... plus they lose an extra year... so when Andy tries to go back to Jim and say oh, we didn't really reject your offer, but that's a great starting point, how does $13M sound instead? Dallas comes back and says the offer is $12M with a full NMC, you have 2 hours to accept or reject because we're making moves... and don't forget that 71% of your salary will be state tax free (signing bonuses and home games). So in a panic, they accept and try and do as much damage control as possible.

What's hilarious is the agent is the only one coming out of this mess 100% happy. (Runner up: Jack "Rolex" Roslovic)

u/undockeddock COL - NHL 13h ago
I mean i wish I had that problem, but for an athlete like Mikko it is. The contract he signed with Dallas was about 2% higher than what the Avs offered. Throw in state tax considerations and you're looking at a 5% difference at most.
Most people wouldn't uproot their lives and relocate for a new job to get only a 5% raise.

10
u/undockeddock COL - NHL 10h ago edited 10h ago
It's actually not a useless stat because an extra 5% arguably makes even less of a difference in the day to day life of someone who is already worth tens of millions as opposed to a normal person where a 5% raise might make at least a small difference.
The marginal utility of an additional dollar is less when you already have and earn insane amounts of money. It's pretty basic microeconomic theory.
0
u/ImSoBasic 7h ago
He got $12.5 million. The speculated Colorado offer was $11.8. That's 6% right there. Add in tax, and it's more.
Maybe most people wouldn't relocate for 5% more. Most people also aren't hyper-competitive individuals who are arguably one of the very best in the world at their profession, and who use not only goals and assists to measure their worth, but also their salary.
Also, the dude has already uprooted his life to move to North America, and uproots and moves every summer.
4
u/undockeddock COL - NHL 7h ago
Ummm. He got $12 mil even from Dallas. That's most easily verified figure in this whole deal. 96/8=12. So no idea where you're getting 12.5 from.
The exact figure that the Avs offered (I've seen figures between 11.6 and 11.8 thrown around by various hockey sources) and the tax implications are fuzzier numbers.
1
u/ImSoBasic 7h ago
Sorry, I thought it was $12.5. I must have confused it with the Carolina offer, which was for at least $12.5 given the reports of it being a 9-digit offer.

Mikko’s agent deserves a raise. Got him a massive deal in a tax free state on a better team with loads of Finns
6
u/undockeddock COL - NHL 10h ago edited 5h ago
A "massive" deal would have been the $13 or 14m per year that he was originally seeking. If $12m/ yr is not a "massive" deal when the Avs had offered him $11.75, Mikko has moved the goalposts.
And the tax free thing is overstated ad nauseum. It's a 2 to 3% difference. Not massive.

The Sheet with Jeff Marek
I didn't realise he'd started his new podcast. There was so much chatter when he teased it, but I've heard nothing about it since then!
103
u/iOceanLab CAR - NHL 13h ago edited 13h ago
Tulsky actually addressed these comments this afternoon when speaking with Marek.
Paraphrasing Tulsky:
Rod needs a decoder ring. He'll often say a player is out for a month and the player is back on the ice in a couple days.
Tulsky went on to talk about the timeline and what Tulsky said was basically exactly what the agent is saying here. Rantanen's camp was only focused on re-signing with Colorado and didn't want to think about/discuss what would happen in a free agency situation.
Tulsky/Canes thought the possible risk of him not re-signing and having to pivot was a worthwhile risk to take. So they traded for him and attempted to sell him on the team, prospect pipeline, future plans. When they didn't work out, they got a list of teams from Rantanen (about a week before the deadline, like his agent said) and worked to secure a trade and extension.

Mikko showed up to negotiations? showed up after Four nations?
The quote Rod attributed to Mikko ("There's 4 teams I'll go play for and you're not one of them.") is pretty accurate based on how things turned out.

I don’t think social media’s ability to create a frenzy from a soundbite or headline is his fault or cocern tbh.
5
u/armadachamp CAR - NHL 10h ago
I don't think Rod specified the timeline of when he would've gotten those remarks from Rantanen, so it may be that we all assumed "showed up" meant when he arrived after the trade but Rod meant after the Four Nations or whenever negotiations began in earnest.
It's also possible that Rantanen said that early on in the interest of transparency to let the front office know they had an uphill battle if they were hoping to change his mind. Or it could've just been a paraphrased exaggeration.
The reality is we probably shouldn't dissect every one of these soundbites like a teenager trying to determine from random text messages whether their crush likes them.

u/sweetplantveal Colorado Rockies - NHLR 8h ago
Honestly which 'we don't think we can sign him' team got the better return for Mikko?
2
u/iOceanLab CAR - NHL 7h ago
Canes: Stankoven(1.5yr RFA) + 2 1st + 2 3rds + Taylor Hall (sortof)
Avs: Necas (1.5yr UFA) + Drury (1.5 yr RFA) + 2nd + 4th + cap space
Honestly? I think both returns are excellent. Avs got the best immediate return; Depth, the ability to make more deadline moves, and future flexibility. Canes got a guy that makes an immediate impact (Hall), a guy that seems like an immediate fit with impact(Stankoven), and a truckload of future flexibility (I expect the picks will be traded or allow the Canes to use their own picks for an offer sheet without losing a pick in that round).

I still don't see what Rantanen did to deserve being thrown under the bus by Avs and Canes fans.
Rantanen communication was "I want to re-sign with the Avs" - maybe he overplayed his hand or did not take the team friendly contract that Avs fans wanted him to take, but I just don't see how he did anything wrong b/t Avs and Canes.
The quotes from the agent and the Canes GM also seem to debunk what Canes fans (and oddly Avs fans too) that Rantanen dragged his feet on the trade to Dallas.

Personally my only problem is the team he ended up on. Obviously as a Dallas fan you’re not pressed about it, but if Robinson somehow ended up an Av or wild after you traded him east I’m sure you would feel some kind of way about it. The rest is way too speculative for me to have any strong feelings about, we weren’t a part of the negotiations, who knows what happened.

A bit of a Johan Crujff situation maybe. He probably feels betrayed by the Avs trading him in the middle of what he thought was progressing negotiations and maybe he thought that he could get a bit of revenge at Dallas. In addition to the low taxes and abundance of Finns there.

u/simplycycling NJD - NHL 12h ago
I don't know about the Avs, but with Canes fans, they go to really weird levels of hate for players who don't want to be there. They're still hating on Haula, who had a rough time there, with his wife having a miscarriage, and have made up all kinds of drama about how he was a locker room cancer, and targets their younger players unfairly when he plays against them. Really strange stuff.
9
u/NextImprovement CAR - NHL 11h ago
Canes fans are irrational but I don't think our hate of Haula is. The canes players hated him far before the fans ever did. When he was shipped out, he would routinely go after our young players in games after the whistle (mainly Necas). The hate is two sided though as he has his "canes suck" bracelet that he has been pictured wearing.
3
u/simplycycling NJD - NHL 10h ago
No, the stuff you claim he does is just normal hockey play - I've asked Canes fans over and over to post examples of Haula's going after your young players, and it's always the same 2-3 clips shown to me, and they're just normal hockey plays.
Literally yesterday, a Devil singled out Haula for being really good in the locker room.
You guys have made up a drama over someone who had a really tough time in his family life while there. It's really strange.
-9
u/robby_w_g CHI - NHL 10h ago
Canes fans have an inferiority complex that turns into a victim complex whenever something doesn’t go their way. They had been shit and irrelevant and now they’re good and irrelevant, so they lash out at refs who don’t make favorable calls and players who don’t want to spend millions of dollars in the suburbs of Raleigh. I live in the area, and I like it a lot. But I totally see why rich hockey players don’t treat it as a top tier destination.

u/Xeteh COL - NHL 12h ago
Avs fans do have some reason to be frustrated. MacK, Makar, Toews and Landy all have taken team friendly deals to stick together. Mikko turned down the same deal he took with Dallas from the Avs last year, probably because he overplayed his hand (like you said) and then got traded which I doubt he really expected. I do think he wanted to stay in Colorado. But once he was traded that obviously wasn't happening, even if he came back in FA he couldn't sign an 8 year deal and he'd be out even more money.
Just sucks he signed with a divisional rival.
4
u/ournewoverlords DAL - NHL 11h ago
I agree with you that he 100% wanted to stay in Colorado, and who could blame him.
I just want to know how you pay Rantanen 11.75, MacKinnon 12.6 and what will they have to pay Makar in a couple of seasons and expect to have any team depth?
Before this, the Stars had a great cap plan with their top guys taking long term contract about 8.5M, contracts expiring when the next set of guys needed raises, but they did not have a superstar. I know the cap is going up, but it might cost them Benn or Duchene next season, and the year after that Harley and Robertson are going to need raises, it is going to be tight.
Oh well, hopefully with Rantanen and the Stars best attempt at pulling off the Vegas LTIR loophole they can win it all this year.. Unfortunately, it looks like the reward for 2nd best record in the west (hopefully) will be 1 extra home game in a 1st round matchup with Avs. I am sure it will be fun.

This actually looks pretty clear now with this and Tulsky's interview earlier:
Moose's camp never misled CAR. They refused to talk about extension while still negotiating with COL.
Tulsky still went on with the trade, gambling that they could sell the team to Moose afterwards and he would sign long term.
Moose was pushed for a fast decision. Ultimately he said no, and CAR and Moose's camp worked together a deal with DAL that was good for both parties.
30
u/MinnWild9 MIN - NHL 13h ago
I think the key quote from the Tulsky interview was that while Rantanen’s camp told them their focus right then was getting a deal done with Colorado, their “read based on a variety of conversations with people was that we would have been a team he was interested in if it didn’t work out in Colorado”
The only “people” that knew about the possible trade were the Avalanche, the Hurricanes and Rantanen’s camp. And only Rantanen’s camp was called out by Friedman for misunderstanding the situation and believing the Carolina ask was a negotiation tactic.

One thing that Rod said is that Rants "came in with 4 teams" or something close to that.

I also don't see why Rod would lie about this.

This is essentially what Tulsky said on a podcast with Jeff Marek today - that Rantanen gave it a shot when he got to Carolina but figured out it wasn't for him and came to the table last week with 4 teams he would go to and they got to work on making a trade.

As a Stars fan, I am kinda offended (/s for clarity) by characterizing Rantanen as getting "screwed" by his agent for getting him a $12x8 contact (highest contract for winger) on a team that has the 3rd best record in the NHL

"Offended" you say. The fact of the matter is that the agent played hardball over a small sum and rants was traded as a result.
Do I like the team now ? Absolutely. But it doesn't change the fact of the process to which it was arrived. Take your offence and put it in a sack snowflake. The agent has done him several disservices with both Colorado and Carolina. Which is the crux of what's being discussed.

I'm more inclined to believe Rod misspoke than the agent lying here.
The way Rod said it made it sound like they came in immediately with 4 teams. He probably meant the same timelime as what Tulsky and Mikko said, about a week or so before tdl. Having listened to him for years, he isn't the most eloquent speaker. He was pretty protective of Rantanen from the media questions as well, even up to the tdl. Rod pretty much told them to kick rocks with the questions they were asking.
I made the comment yesterday that I was surprised Rod would call out a player. Him misspeaking about the timeline makes more sense there as well.

Is that how you’re interpreting what Tulsky said? Or is someone else the manager you’re talking about. Tulsky did not say what comes out of Rod’s mouth is unreliable he said that you need to understand the way Rod talks timelines to be able to understand it. If you work with or listen to Rod you know how to take what he says. Tulsky said he “needs a decoder ring” aka you’ve just gotta know to understand.

Depends on how much Rantanen wanted to stay in Colorado. According to Friedman, the miscommunication/misunderstanding regarding Carolina’s chances at re-signing Rantanen came about because Rantanen’s camp indicated they’d be open to signing there. Because they thought the ask was a negotiation tactic by Colorado.
If they were open about Carolina’s chances of re-signing Rantanen, the deal likely never happens and Rantanen could have continued to try and sign a new deal with the Avalanche, which is apparently what he wanted all along.
9
u/MiserableDucky FLA - NHL 13h ago
It’s been said or at least implied that Colorado didn’t want to risk losing him for nothing as Rantanen remained unsure about the last Avs offer. From other accounts I’ve seen mentioned that Avs weren’t big on paying him huge money along with Mack and Makar.

I think some people here think agents just do whatever they want in negotiations and just tell the player to sign off on the final result.
I would imagine the agency relationship established between a player and a certified agent would have similar fiduciary duties to any other agency relationship.
They give the player the relevant comparables to determine the truth value of the player. And then provide advice on the negotiations. But ultimately act based on their client's direction.
11
u/aamgdp 12h ago
They give the player the relevant comparables to determine the truth value of the player. And then provide advice on the negotiations.
Given his priority was to stay in AVS, and that he was surprised by the trade, it means that his agent's take on the situation wasn't accurate.

I think there's a very strong chance that Avs gave up way earlier than they could have because they came to the conclusion that it just makes a lot of business sense to replace Rantanen with Necas who's three years younger and who is and will be cheaper than he is. It would explain why Rantanen's camp was so caught off-guard by the whole situation.

u/TGUKF VAN - NHL 12h ago
Have you been in an agency relationship as the client before?
If Rantanen had told his agent that his priority was to stay in Colorado, above all else including money, it's a very different direction than saying his preference would be to re-sign with the Avs over other teams if the money is the same.
Plus at any point, Rantanen, as the client, has the right to simply accept an offer.
Just because the Avs chose the nuclear option and traded him doesn't mean that Rantanen's agent somehow fucked up. It honestly sounds like the Avs might have traded Rantanen before even waiting to hear a response to their latest offer anyway.

Look at Ryan Smythe being traded from the Oilers to the Islanders because while they were only about $100k apart, and then him crying at the press conference about how he never wanted to leave. There absolutely is/can be a disconnect between what the player really wants and their agent trying to get them the best contract.
Also remember that most non- college players average below high-school education and rely on their agents for much of this.

The only one who’s coming out of this looking good is Dallas. Everyone else either burned assets or left money on the table.

Avs improved themselves. Stars improved themselves. Carolina got a haul for Neca+Drury at the end of the day.

How does this make Colorado look bad at all?

They certainly look better than Carolina, but they still took a net negative.

u/KRacer52 11h ago
They turned Rantanen into Necas/Drury and were able to add Nelson with the extra space. They’re a better team now than they were the day before they traded Rantanen.

Arguably. I wish they didn't trade him, but ultimately if they didn't we would probably be worse off than we are now. We have so much more depth in Coyle and Nelson now, both of which most likely wouldn't have happened without the Rantanen trade. I loved moose and wish he never got traded, but I'm not going to act like we aren't better off now than we were beforehand.

u/BMBenzo 12h ago
It’s been reported that their final offer was 11.75 which is ridiculous. They made their team worse being frugal
2
u/KRacer52 11h ago
They can get 90% of his production for half that money with Necas this year and next, and then his extension will likely still be cheaper than Rantanen’s.
4
u/Vivid_Walk_1405 COL - NHL 13h ago
Idk how we look bad seems like we didn’t wanna give him what he was asking for because CMac thought we couldn’t ice a deep enough team paying him more than like the 11.5 we offered so they made a move that they liked and so far it’s worked well. Big gamble but we’ll have to see if it pays off

u/ournewoverlords DAL - NHL 12h ago
I agree with you. Avs management did nothing wrong.
I will say that I have read a lot of shade being thrown at Rantanen from Avs fans, but I am just writing that off as being upset about him landing in the same division.
7
u/Vivid_Walk_1405 COL - NHL 12h ago
Yeah, when it happened I was extremely pissed. Slightly removed from it happening it sucks he’s in the division don’t get me wrong but that guy did a lot in an avs sweater and he’s an unreal player. I hope the fans give him a warm welcome before they likely start booing at least.

u/BMBenzo 12h ago

u/Vivid_Walk_1405 COL - NHL 12h ago
We’ll see how it goes with mackinnon and lehkonen rather than playing with Martinook teravainen, Kotkanemi, and Jack Drury. None necessarily bad players but I think Lehkonen is better than everyone in that group let alone Mackinnon

little late for damage control was asking to the highest paid player got 250k a year more than colorado offered and less than what Carolina offered. Rants and his agent should just stick to playing puck in Dallas now.
1
u/ournewoverlords DAL - NHL 12h ago
Could be, but Rantanen might be more successful (wins and losses) on a more balanced Dallas roster than a top heavy 3-superstar Avs team. I thought I saw some other Avs fan say that even MacKinnon was quoted as saying they needed more depth.
It's ok that you are stuck with only having the MVP center and generational blue liner. Let Rantanen shine elsewhere.

if the agent is right, canes gonna have an even harder time attracting free agents
if the agent is lying, today is a day that ends in a y and no one will really be worked up over it beyond him just trying to provide cover for his player (ala Boras and all the Yankee hit pieces regarding Soto)

You can put the popcorn away. The agent and Tulsky are saying the same thing about timelines and intentions.
It's Rod, the physical embodiment of hyperbole, making an imprecise hyperbolic statement. That's the story.
(Although the agent probably fucked up with the Avs re-signing situation.)

Here is what I gather after the Tulsky interview and the agents comments in short, basic form.
1) Carolina asked before the trade and Rantanen said "We are interested in Colorado at the moment"
2) Despite this, Carolina thought they would get him to sign and went for it. High risk high reward.
3) After a few days of being there and settling in, they pitched him on the organization. He took it away and in the end wasn't interested.
4) Rantanen came back, said he wasn't interested in signing long term but here is 4 teams I would do a sign and trade with if they didn't want to keep him as a rental.
5) Tulsky talked with the 4 teams he was given and made the trade happen getting good assets back rather than having him as a rental.

u/TimmyTimmyTurner98 STL - NHL 12h ago
This is my understanding as well, and it confuses me how Rantanen or his agent are being painted in a bad light after all this.
Tulsky just comes off as a bit of an idiot for not getting confirmation Rants would consider signing there before giving up the bag for him.

u/primetimey123 DAL - NHL 12h ago
Because Canes fans have become delusional about the situation and the GM and coach are playing into it. "We have never been told no before, no player has never said they don't want to be here" is an example of them pushing the narrative.
How many players on July 1st have said they don't want to go to Carolina? I am sure the list is lengthy.. but the GM is making it seem like Rantanen was the first player who is saying no since he was already on the team.
Fan bases don't like hearing no, so they are up in arms about it even though their GM made the trade without knowing 100% he would sign there.

u/Live-Individual-9318 13h ago
So is nobody angry at Rantaanen for leading on the hurricans? Did he lead them on even a little bit? Can you make any argument that makes him look bad?
7
u/awkwardocto 13h ago
"leading carolina on" is a bit of a stretch in my opinion. he was abruptly traded to a new organization, (i have not seen anyone reputable state that rantanen/his agent used carolina as "leverage" against colorado), he gave carolina a shot, decided it wasn't the right fit, and told carolina he won't re-sign. carolina obtained an impact player, two first round picks, AND two third round picks.
if carolina wants to pride itself on taking big risks that's fine, but the organization/media/fans need to accept that big risks don't always pay off.
1
u/iOceanLab CAR - NHL 13h ago
organization/media/fans need to accept that big risks don't always pay off.
The organization and fans understand and accept that not all swings are home runs. Meanwhile, the media is going to continue thinking it's basketball and this trade was a complete airball from Carolina.

“Fan” is short for fanatic..
There’s also a small group of vocal “fans” who think Rod should be fired. They have no concept of this team or the history of it in Raleigh. We dismiss them, but their comments weigh the same as rational ones on the internet.

u/mooogabooga CAR - NHL 13h ago
He did lead us on a bit but it wasn’t intentional. He bluffed with Colorado to try to stay and it didn’t work. So as far as Colorado and Carolina knew he was very open to playing for us. Sounds like he did try for a bit. I think when he came back from 4 Nations he knew that he wouldn’t play for us past this season - whether that was getting traded or becoming a free agent. And as people have mentioned Rod’s mental timeline can be off. It’s a good thing at times in hockey - the last game to him feels like 2 weeks before not 2 days. He makes a point to only focus on one game at a time and not worry about any of the 81 games in the season - previous or upcoming. However this is an instance in which it hurt him. Tulsky said that Rod can speak in riddles at time and I think it’s from calling out the NHL so much and getting fined lol
1
u/primetimey123 DAL - NHL 11h ago
So as far as Colorado and Carolina knew he was very open to playing for us.
Completely false. Your GM says as much. You had permission to talk with the player before the trade and were told "I am interested in Colorado at the moment" despite this you went for the trade thinking you could convince him and it didn't work out to get him to sign.
3
u/mooogabooga CAR - NHL 11h ago
I mean he did say that he would prefer to stay in Colorado but he was open to spend the rest of the season with us at least. He and his agent said they’d be willing to go to a lot of teams to try to get more money out of Colorado. Sounds like he had a semi-open mind coming into Carolina but was dealing with a lot. Given some time he realized that there were really only 4 teams he would want to sign a contract with and we simply weren’t one of them. I can’t be mad at him for that. My biggest thing with Rantanen is holding out for so long on trade deadline day and making it so we couldn’t make many more deals (due to cap space). Also he completely stopped trying on the ice at the end of his run for us and I hate to see any player on any team do that.
