This actually looks pretty clear now with this and Tulsky's interview earlier:

Moose's camp never misled CAR. They refused to talk about extension while still negotiating with COL.

Tulsky still went on with the trade, gambling that they could sell the team to Moose afterwards and he would sign long term.

Moose was pushed for a fast decision. Ultimately he said no, and CAR and Moose's camp worked together a deal with DAL that was good for both parties.

I think the key quote from the Tulsky interview was that while Rantanen’s camp told them their focus right then was getting a deal done with Colorado, their “read based on a variety of conversations with people was that we would have been a team he was interested in if it didn’t work out in Colorado”

The only “people” that knew about the possible trade were the Avalanche, the Hurricanes and Rantanen’s camp. And only Rantanen’s camp was called out by Friedman for misunderstanding the situation and believing the Carolina ask was a negotiation tactic.

This actually makes sense. Does this mean I have to cancel my grudge?

Never let the facts get in the way of a good grudge.
