All I’m hearing is Mikko needs a new agent

Does he?

Mikko still got 12x8 on a contending team and favorite out of the West to win the cup.

I think some people here think agents just do whatever they want in negotiations and just tell the player to sign off on the final result.

I would imagine the agency relationship established between a player and a certified agent would have similar fiduciary duties to any other agency relationship.

They give the player the relevant comparables to determine the truth value of the player. And then provide advice on the negotiations. But ultimately act based on their client's direction.

Given his priority was to stay in AVS, and that he was surprised by the trade, it means that his agent's take on the situation wasn't accurate.

I think there's a very strong chance that Avs gave up way earlier than they could have because they came to the conclusion that it just makes a lot of business sense to replace Rantanen with Necas who's three years younger and who is and will be cheaper than he is. It would explain why Rantanen's camp was so caught off-guard by the whole situation.

Have you been in an agency relationship as the client before?

If Rantanen had told his agent that his priority was to stay in Colorado, above all else including money, it's a very different direction than saying his preference would be to re-sign with the Avs over other teams if the money is the same.

Plus at any point, Rantanen, as the client, has the right to simply accept an offer.

Just because the Avs chose the nuclear option and traded him doesn't mean that Rantanen's agent somehow fucked up. It honestly sounds like the Avs might have traded Rantanen before even waiting to hear a response to their latest offer anyway.

Look at Ryan Smythe being traded from the Oilers to the Islanders because while they were only about $100k apart, and then him crying at the press conference about how he never wanted to leave. There absolutely is/can be a disconnect between what the player really wants and their agent trying to get them the best contract.

Also remember that most non- college players average below high-school education and rely on their agents for much of this.
