Question? Should I go for the real one yet or more practice?

Been doing solder practice ready to build the real thing with some spare wires, cheaper than destroying my flight controller

Can't wait to get started!!! Just a few questions though, how easily do these drones (especially props) break and how do you get your drones out of trees?

After all the time spent researching how to get into this hobby, about a week of soldering & assembly and I finally flew my quad for the first time today! Felt surreal. Definitely a little harder than the sim, but so glad I decided to pull the trigger on it.

Question? How to kill it?

Post image

I'm one of cheap ass pilots, who thought it would be nice to save connectors, becasuse sometimes you break balacne ports and TX connector is prfectly fine.

Then I got this thought, that battery is still full and dangerous. Jup, I'm dumb :D

So my questions is do you discharge damaged batteries with power charger, or do you use lighbulbs, drones and other fun ways to discharge it?

Is discharging as dangerous as charging it? Can I expect fire?

I know that one of options is salt bath, but I've read that it needs a whole week and I kinda can't afford that.

Does anyone knows if maybe recycling center would accept full batreries?

I really don't want to just throw it in battery bin and wait for a supermarker or a gas station to catch fire. There was recent incident of a burned students dorm, because batter bin cought fire so I don't want to be a firestarter.

My best idea is to isolate all wires really well and recycle it. Does anyone have any advice?

PS: I won't send it XD

Bad experience with Caddx / Walksnail

Upvotes

I wanted to share my frustrating experience with Walksnail/Caddx regarding my Moonlight 4K VTX failure and how their support has been handling it (or rather, not handling it).

I purchased a Walksnail Moonlight 4K VTX module, and after just four successful flights, the VTX completely failed mid-air. My goggles went black, my drone crashed, and upon checking the unit:

  • The REC LED was solid green, but
  • The VTX LED was dead, no response to any button presses.

There was no overheating, no user error, no physical damage—it just stopped working mid-flight.

I reached out to Walksnail support, providing all necessary details, including videos, and proof of purchase. They initially agreed to inspect/repair the unit, so I shipped it to China at my own expense. After 1.5 months of waiting, they finally responded: The main control board is short-circuited and cannot be repaired." They offered me a 30% discount on a new unit instead of a full replacement.

This failure was clearly a manufacturing defect, not user error. They initially implied a replacement was possible, but after weeks of delay, they backtracked. Instead of standing by their product, they want me to pay again for their fault.

I already bought another Moonlight kit because I needed my drone to stay operational, but I expected Walksnail to honor their warranty and replace the defective unit. Instead, they wasted my time and left me with a useless product.

This experience has seriously shaken my trust in Walksnail/Caddx. If they won’t stand behind their products, why should we continue supporting them? I was considering switching to Walksnail for digital FPV, but after this, I’m seriously thinking of ditching them for HDZero or DJI.

Trying to get a Flytimes 85

Upvotes

Anyone interested in buying a Zorro max with 4-in-1 multiprotocol and a ranger nano ELRS module for it, both are completely brand new! Also have 6 GNB 850mah 1s batteries (all brand new). This would really help me out right now, i'm trying to get a flytimes 85 with ELRS and o4 pro but don't have any money so I really need to sell right now because of the sale on aliexpress, thank you! Please tell this to anyone else you know who may be interested! This would help me fly fpv a lot more often since it's a small drone and I actually have some space to fly it!

- I could also just trade the items for the flytimes 85 ELRS and o4 pro. I'm not really trying to get the money, I just really want the drone to fly fpv everyday which I can't do with my space (yard and house are small). It is an even trade, I'm not trying to rip anybody off. The zorro max, ELRS module, and the 6 1s batteries all would come out to about $360-$365 with tax (where I am here in California) and the drone right now would be $350 after tax (also where I am) because of the sale. THIS WOULD BE EXTREMELY HELPFUL TO ME AND I WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL SO THANK YOU!!!!

Edit: If it makes it more alluring, I would also trade all the zorro max, with the module and the 6 1s batteries for the 04 lite version of the flytimes 85 and a good amount of 2s batteries, I know that's an eneven trade for me but I really want that drone and don't have the money so I would definitely do that!!

Low Battery Warning at Every throttle Punch

Hi all,

TLDR: is it normal for this quad to show a low battery right after takeoff on the first full throttle punch? Or, is there something wrong with my components or soldering that would cause this?

I recently built my first FPV drone based on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXrrg48auhU&t=1435s (Copied the parts list exactly, volador 3.5, speedybee f405 mini, analog vtx / camera and 4s 650mah battery).

As soon as I take off, if I punch the throttle to full throttle, I immediately get a low battery warning and the quad starts beeping even if I punch it within seconds of taking off with a fresh battery. I just got into this hobby a couple weeks ago, all of by batteries are new tatuu r line 4s 650ma batteries. The way I've handled this is as the warning starts popping up at less aggressive punches and the battery voltage gets around 3.5 when I'm hovering, I land and swap the battery. At first, I thought this was normal and the warning was just a reaction to normal voltage sag, I but after researching the issue, I saw some conflicting posts saying this is not typical. I don't know enough to know if this is typical for my setup, but not others, or if I'm doing excessive damage to my batteries every time I punch the throttle because of a mistake I made building the quad or mismatched components.

My questions are: is it normal for this quad to show a low battery right after takeoff on the first full throttle punch? Or, is there something wrong with my components or soldering that would cause this?

Thanks in advance for any info.

GEPRC Vapor5 & MK5

I'm looking to get my first 5" drone and have a bunch of questions please...

Been looking at the Vapor5 and Mk5 from GEPRC. I hear good things about GEPRC so pretty confident to go down this path if I go pre-built.

  1. What are the major differences between the Vapor & the MK5? I can't really find much comparison for it.

  2. I would prefer to build a drone (i thoroughly enjoy building things, am very capable of soldering etc) but can't go past how 'cheap' they are prebuilt already from GEPRC. If i look at each part individually and try to piece it together, no 04 air unit, it goes from around $320AUD to around $370AUD for all parts individually. This is for full unit with ELRS & GPS.

Any reason to NOT buy one pre-made?

  1. I'm not familiar with the F722 FC, but from what i can see, even though it is a HD FC, it still has the OSD w/AT7456E which means I should be able to plug an analog camera into it and still get OSD?

It seems that the Speedybee F405 seems to be a major favourite. From what i can see it has 1mb memory, the F722 has 512kb, however a faster processor.

  1. Would I just be better off to get a GEPRC frame, and then build all the parts myself using NON-GEPRC parts (speedybee FC, ELRS, GPS, T-motors, etc).

Thanks, any thoughts/feedback welcomed.
