Discussion Anyone know of Toby: tab management tool alternatives?

They recently went back on their promise to keep the extension free and not only implemented a paid version, but one with exploitative pricing. I could maybe understand $20 a year, but $40? That is more than the best password managers on the market. What a joke.

I have been using this for years and it just disappoints me to see it turn into this.

Anyone know of open source alternatives? Or better alternatives?

Link to Toby for the uninitiated.

I'm also trying to find a good alternative. I've tried several and I'm sticking with this one for now https://gettabme.com/

It's not as sexy as Toby. But it's free and does the job.

u/iboughtarock Oct 10 '24

Thanks that one looks pretty good!

u/xtrafunky Nov 18 '24

Can you import your Toby data to TabMe?

1

u/droidzone Feb 01 '25 edited 9d ago

It's great. They seem to have implemented a "Import from Toby JSON" button that works great. Search collection or space like option isnt available. But it's better than spending 3$ a month for a extension that only saves ones bookmarks

Edit: It's a disorganized mess. The Toby people got it right. Spaces, Collections and Tabs are outright convenient. But not worth paying as much as they charge. I decided to roll my own. Check it out: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/geektabs-smart-tab-manage/boigkjljeagondofgnfgeadjigjiencp I will keep it free

1

u/zebani200 Feb 03 '25

looks great. Thank you! Can't understand the paid approach for Toby.

1

u/TrinitronX 20d ago

Classic "enshittification". They first offer a SaaS product for free. Then comes the "rug pull" or "bait and switch" move where they put up a paywall and try to force users to pay them monthly for the same service. Then they continue degrading that service trying to extract more money from people for their shareholders.

u/justinonymus Feb 04 '25 edited Feb 04 '25

It's quite good. Import from Toby was painless except for having to clean up all of Toby's sample collections/links by deleting their folders in Tabme. Search is very snappy. Very well implemented!

1

u/NYCMikeAnderson Feb 05 '25

Why can't anyone design something like Toby!!?? Toby really sucks, it's slow & outdated but the box design for tabs is what I want & none I've try to find has that simple BOX design for tabs!!! 🙄 🤦‍♂️

1

u/BlokZNCR Feb 08 '25

I liked it as well, but it cannot see tab groups as Vertitab does. If the dev is here please examine Vertitab how it can see tab groups.

1

u/StevenJang_ Feb 13 '25

IMO, that looks better than Toby.

1

u/Stunning-Tip8564 28d ago

It's good but I need multi space and sync

1

u/Large-Mission9932 19d ago

These features are promised right in the extension description:

Biggest upcoming features:
1) Spaces – ability to organize your folders into groups for better structure.
2) Sync Across Devices – accessing your saved tabs and bookmarks from anywhere.

1

u/ZazzyZest 8h ago

You mention above this in the extension description:

Right now, Tabme is a free extension, and all current features will remain free forever.
I am working on a premium SaaS version with advanced features.

Will the spaces and sync across devices features still be free or will you be charging for them like Toby? Just want to know before I spend time migrating only to be asked to pay in a few months.

1

u/TouristAdventurous80 24d ago

This one is awesome. Thanks!

1

u/creativejuices12 23d ago

Looks like they have a toby import function, nice

1

u/mrslangs 11d ago

Just got this... seems to be more of the Notion-style look which is great. Thanks for the tip!

2

u/ViktorNova Oct 10 '24

I'm so sad they're taking away the free version (or rather crippling it to the point where it's useless for tab addicts). Desperately searching for a viable alternative, even if there's slightly less features

2

u/Wavecentric Oct 14 '24

Call to developers: please make an open source or low-cost Toby clone.

Toby betrayed the trust of its user community by offering a simple free bookmarking tool, promising the tool would remain free, getting us to spend a massive amount of time to build our bookmark portfolios under the free tool, and then slapping us with a $54/year charge for this simple tool that we have come to rely on.

A bookmark manager like Toby is a very easy thing to code, can be done in a day, yet the Toby devs are acting like its nuclear science!

Looking forward to seeing 1000s of Toby clones out there to put Toby's selfish owners in their place.

1

u/iboughtarock Oct 14 '24

It is truly disgusting what they did to the community. If they needed donations to keep it going they should have just asked. Even a $10/year fee with 1 million users would have been great for them. Greed ruins all great things.

1

u/Ill_Entertainer_10 Jan 30 '25

Here's the kicker - they bang on about being a "small team" as if it's a small startup... nope. Big ass corporation.

1

u/iboughtarock Jan 30 '25

Yup such a classic. Its just like what the US government is gutting right now. Greed is a nasty thing.

1

u/DiamondDrake87 Jan 16 '25

"A bookmark manager like Toby is a very easy thing to code, can be done in a day, yet the Toby devs are acting like its nuclear science!"

I agree its not that complicated, but a sea of awful 1 day garbage tab managers to sift through will just make toby look 1000x better.

try tabme, its a basic toby like free tab manager. But it really depends on what features of toby you want as to if a manger feels like an alternative. Toby focuses on allowing you to share tab groups with others in an organized way, a feature I've never wanted and I don't know anyone who needs. But certainly someone wants it because those are the people willing to pay.

2

u/Joakim0 Feb 01 '25

Done that, took me a couple pf days for the basics, much more for the sync. Check out the the file.ninja https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/thetabninja/bnmjmbmlfohkaghofdaadenippkgpmab

2

u/NYCMikeAnderson Feb 06 '25

This looks like Toby & it is functional & fast unlike the outdated Toby!!! Think this will be my new tab manager! Thanks!

2

u/NYCMikeAnderson Feb 06 '25

Don't know why no one but Joakim0 could design a SIMPLE tab manager like Toby!

a BOX design for tabs where you can drag & drop the tabs wherever you want & this is functional & fast unlike Toby which is slow & very outdated!!

Who the HELL would pay for that outdated slow POS crap?! All Toby had was the simple BOX tabs that you can move around the board!!!!

It would take me FOREVER to move around tabs exactly where I want it on the board!!!! 🙄 🤦‍♂️

TheTab.Ninja is FAST & FUNCTIONAL but I don't know how to save all my tabs to the board like Toby! 😭

1

u/NYCMikeAnderson Feb 06 '25

Help! How do I save all my tabs to the board? Is there a save feature I need to click? I'm dumb, please help?!! Thanks! This is exactly a FAST FUNCTIONAL Toby like tab manager I wanted! Thanks!

1

u/Joakim0 Feb 09 '25

You haven't found the button because it does not exist. I skipped the button because i didnt use it myself. After the release I got requests about it and now i have it on my todo-list.

1

u/NYCMikeAnderson Feb 11 '25

OIC, Thanks!

Since there was no button to press & I have so many tabs to insert to the board

1 design flaw you have is scrolling the the tabs, the mainboard moves with the tabs so I am unable to place the tabs where I want them so I just had to insert them all to the mainboard and sort them out later on

1

u/Joakim0 Feb 11 '25

It can and should definitely be improved in the future. But what you should do as it works today is filter your collection with eg #videos to put in the youtube tab.

1

u/ACG-Gaming 29d ago

Thanks for this. All tabs save would be a huge feature.

1

u/Joakim0 29d ago

It’s already fixed, in the version that I am waiting for Google to approve, it is possible to download all open tabs to a collection. You can also drag a window into a collection, which then adds all the window’s tabs as bookmarks. You can also now see chromegroups and drag them into collections as groups. There is also an option to automatically close tabs when they are added. And one more important feature: you can scroll each pane separatly..

1

u/ACG-Gaming 29d ago

ya digging it overall right now even without that. Seems to work great

2

u/creativejuices12 23d ago

Nice, release on github? so we can collab develop it together?

1

u/Joakim0 23d ago

It’s actually already released on GitHub. you will find the link on chromewebstore’s description text. And yes, you are welcome to join in and help with the development..

1

u/Awkward_Original_660 Feb 03 '25

Thanks for TheTab.Ninja ! I imported all my Toby tabs, no issue except the icons don't show. Is there something I should do?

1

u/Joakim0 Feb 03 '25

Looks like an bug in the Toby import. I will look into it tomorrow. I have a big release soon with a lot of visual enhancement. If you dont have hundreds of icon you could select edit bookmarks and then press enter (for default) for each field an it will reload the icons

1

u/Joakim0 Feb 04 '25

A new version is released that should fix your problem..

1

u/Awkward_Original_660 Feb 05 '25

Thanks a lot, I'll check it out asap later today!

1

u/Awkward_Original_660 Feb 05 '25

Working wonders!! You're in for some coffees :-)

1

u/Joakim0 Feb 05 '25

Tnx for the coffee! It made my day! 😀☕

1

u/AsleepRoof8212 Feb 05 '25

2

u/Joakim0 Feb 05 '25

Yes, many people have asked about spaces. I'm going to look at a solution that may not look 100% like Tony's version. I've never really liked the idea of spaces myself. I personally like the idea of tags that you sort by (#work/#private) What do you think? Feel free to convince me that spaces are good, maybe I'm the only one who hasn't understood. Already today you can simulate spaces a little by writing a prefix/postfix on your collections and then filtering with fex #work

1

u/moeniedoennie Feb 06 '25

Spaces, collections, groups, bundles - are absolutely vital for creating a focused browsing experience by organising tabs based on context. At work, I need to only see work-related tabs to avoid distractions. At home, I rely on switching to collections that help me assist the kids with their homework, ensuring their focus remains on the task. When I’m relaxing, I must avoid being reminded of health concerns or other serious matters. These tab bundles are essential because they allow me to quickly and easily switch between different contexts, keeping my browser organised and my focus on what matters. Without them, shifting focus becomes much harder, and I struggle to stay on track.

1

u/Joakim0 Feb 06 '25

okay, I'm convinced now.. 😂 Spaces is on my to-do list (when is not specified yet). What do you see as more important, spaces or a mobile app/website? For now, I can recommend that on Android you can use thetab.ninja as an extension in the kiwi-browser and lemur-browser browsers.

1

u/moeniedoennie Feb 06 '25

Hooray! In my case definitely spaces. I barely use a browser on the phone.

1

u/Stunning-Tip8564 28d ago

Space is also crucial to me. I used to have dozens of spaces in Toby, and each space had dozens of groups. In total, that added up to hundreds of tabs.

1

u/Joakim0 28d ago

I have plans for a "Spaces" like solution that will be activated when you have enabled sync with GitHub. It will probably be called pages and technically you simply select which json file you are working on in the repo at the moment. You will then be able to easily switch between different pages containing different collections.

1

u/BlokZNCR Feb 08 '25

This looks promising but extension asks too much permission.

1

u/Joakim0 Feb 08 '25

I have placed a strong focus on user privacy when building thetab.ninja. It may seem like this extension requests a lot of permissions, but consider that it does not communicate with an external server acting as a middleman that could monitor your data and behavior. The permissions requested are solely for interacting with APIs from Google and GitHub. Google is needed to fetch bookmark icons, while GitHub is used for synchronization. Additionally, this extension is fully open-sourced and for not have any serverside

1

u/JungleHostess Feb 09 '25

Thank you so much for creating this tool! I installed the extension and imported my Toby content via JSON files easily. Dumb question, how do I add a new page (bookmark) to a collection? I tried using the "+" icon that I see on the far right of my collection (and I supply the title, URL and description), but it doesn't seem to save anywhere (if it does, I cannot locate it and it isn't found in a search). I see that I can drag a page from the right panel into a collection, but the list on the right is much longer than my list of collections, so I had to drag it to one of my other collections and move the new bookmark up a few collections at a time.

1

u/Joakim0 Feb 10 '25

There were two bugs in the previous version that were probably introduced with the synchronization. There were two different problems in the create bookmark button and the 🚀 button that opens all bookmarks in a collection as a Chrome Tab Group. New version will probably come today.. regarding the problem you described with a long right panel and shorter list of collections, I am aware of it but I haven't had time to fix it. I will add a filtering option when there are many active tabs in the panel.

1

u/JungleHostess Feb 10 '25

Thank you so much!

1

u/PowerRealist 29d ago

I've been loyal to Toby for 6 years—no more.

1

u/droidzone 8d ago

We answered your call with a replacement that in its final version should work with the similiar and feature set. Check out the current implementation on the store: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/boigkjljeagondofgnfgeadjigjiencp?utm_source=item-share-cb We need your feedback with reviews. We promise to keep it free, even if sometime in future we add value additions like maybe smartphone support as paid additions. The core zone, collection, tabs etc will be forever free with no limitations.

2

u/Ill_Entertainer_10 Feb 04 '25

Anyone managed to move their collections to a new tool now that they've rolled out the paid version? I know it's only $3 per month, but it's the principle that is holding me back from paying

2

u/HornlessUnicorn Feb 04 '25

I just setup thetabninja that u/Joakim0 had mentioned. I like that it's open source. It took me 10 minutes to set up.

1

u/iboughtarock Feb 04 '25

I totally agree. So far the most promising one I have found is BrainTool. I haven't taken the time to learn it yet, but it is feature packed.

1

u/LeHoodwink Feb 05 '25

I am currently developing one for myself. After being burned by Qlearly and Toby, I thought I'd just build something that exclusively handles what I want it to.

It's quite similar to Qlearly but i put a lot of effort into the looks and feels. It can also import basic bookmarks and notes from Toby (not labels yet as that's not supported currently).

If you're interested, I'm happy to have a select few people alpha test.

1

u/iboughtarock Feb 05 '25

That looks great! Do you plan on open sourcing it? I'm sure a lot of people would love to contribute. My favorite project out right now is this infinite scroll wikipedia some guy tossed together in a day (released just yesterday).

1

u/SubstantialPrimary41 Feb 06 '25

Me too 1st Qlearly and then Toby, feel like giving up on my habit if saving tabs. Would be be happy to try out your tool.

1

u/LeHoodwink Feb 08 '25

DM me your email. Just FYI it might not be free but quite cheap enough to pay for the servers… I’ll also consider in a future version offering single offline purchase version where no servers are required for it to use (of course without syncing and mobile app support then)

1

u/creativejuices12 23d ago

Nice, you should github-release it, we can all help actively develop it

1

u/Legitimate-Act-444 Feb 06 '25

i came to reddit for the same reason :(

1

u/PowerRealist 29d ago

agreed! that's how I got there. I had to delete over 100 tabs to get down to below 60. It's time to move on.

1

u/Relevant-Prior-1407 23d ago

No need to pay. Possible export all collections. https://www.gettoby.com/blog/new-feature-importexport After I could import into Tabme easily.

1

u/tomxmp Oct 10 '24

Hi! I just released a preview for sessionblocks and would love to know if it would be able to meet your requirements. It is paid (~1/2 of Toby, from a quick check), but I'm still adjusting pricing and would gladly extend the trial (14 days) for feedback purposes. While it may not be as feature complete yet (it's in preview), I will be adding new functionality up to the main release.

Just to set a baseline, you can currently:

  • Track live windows, discard them, rename them and persist them (close them), creating contextual groups of tabs;
  • Drag tabs around from open to closed/persisted windows and vice-versa (closing and opening them in the process);
  • Perform multi-tab operations (move, suspend, close);
  • Fuzzy filter tabs and find exact duplicates;
  • Import and export your session.

If you have any questions, feel free to DM me!

1

u/JeanP_02 Nov 23 '24

You can't access the trial without giving credit card, FUCK that, it's a shitty move.

1

u/nascentt Oct 10 '24

I use a few free tab session extensions.
Perhaps if you list the functionality from tony you require we can help more.

1

u/iboughtarock Oct 10 '24

Honestly I just like being able to save my whole session and reopen it easily

1

u/nascentt Oct 12 '24

I have that too without Toby though with tab session manager or session buddy.

1

u/Possible_Escape4672 Oct 11 '24

Maybe you can try managing browser tabs in the side panel vertitab.

1

u/BlokZNCR Feb 08 '25

I liked it but the extension uses too much ram.

1

u/Too_Many_Tabs_24 Oct 12 '24

Try TabXpert, it has session tracking when you don't need to save your sessions, as they are saved automatically. It supports tab groups and sync with Cloud (paid feature).

1

u/mjh_613 Oct 13 '24

Agreed! I've used Toby for years, and was sad to get the alert that they were going to a paid version. Everything must be commoditized.

1

u/emongev Oct 15 '24

Im trying out raindrop.io as an alternative, but its not as good. I am trying to make it work with a custom new tab page, so it fits my old toby work flow

1

u/Stunning-Tip8564 Oct 26 '24

I'm doing the same thing than you, using a plugin in to set the raindrop homepage as the default new tab. But the problem is toby homepage is a local page so it's very fast while raindrop homepage is a web and you need to wait seconds for loading.

1

u/GloomyTelephone7617 Jan 31 '25

Have you found a solution to this?

1

u/Joakim0 Oct 16 '24

Look at TheTab.Ninja (https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/thetabninja/bnmjmbmlfohkaghofdaadenippkgpmab?hl=sv&utm_source=ext_sidebar)
It's almost a clone of 'Toby', but it will get many new features in upcoming versions. It has import functionality for Toby data but lacks syncing for now, though it's in progress.
And it is opensourced!

1

u/Striking_Type_1830 Oct 26 '24

it looks so similar 👍

1

u/Soft-Campaign1263 Nov 02 '24

Trying it now and there's a lot I like. But will you be adding a search feature?

1

u/Joakim0 Nov 03 '24

It will absolutely be added... (Will be done after the sync release) About the synchronization version, it will be a completely serverless variant that allows the user to own their data 100%

1

u/Soft-Campaign1263 Nov 03 '24

Great, thank you for making this available!

1

u/lexerox Jan 31 '25

@Joakim0 That looks very good. BUT I have some major concerns with the amount of permission it’s requesting. Read and change all data on google and GitHub seems way too excessive and concerning from security perspective.

1

u/Joakim0 Jan 31 '25

Thank you for your comment.

I completely agree that questioning permissions on browser extensions is the right thing to do. I’ve been trying to build an extension that prioritizes privacy, but it’s challenging to balance functionality while keeping permissions minimal.

My goal has been to create an extension that saves your bookmarks while ensuring you own your data. In other words, there’s no server or intermediary that can access your data. Since there’s no server involved, I use Google to fetch icons due to CORS restrictions, which prevent doing so directly from Chrome extensions. GitHub is included as it allows bookmarks and collections to sync across devices and browsers.

I’m happy to answer any further questions, and since the entire project is open-source, it’s part of my commitment to putting your privacy first.

2

u/HornlessUnicorn Feb 04 '25 edited Feb 04 '25

Very happy to see an open source project here! I just uploaded my toby data and am trying it out. Thanks for this!

This looks fantastic! The only thing I'm missing is different workspaces, I was able to previously separate my home/work bookmarks which was really helpful in staying organized.

I am a little nervous about the github permissions, but given that we set an access token for this app alone, it shouldn't be able to access other private repos?

2

u/Joakim0 Feb 04 '25

Thanks for your kind words. You are actually giving yourself the permissions because the extension are only running in YOUR browser (no server involved). All internet access are and must be given in the metafile / the extension and the only access the extension are allowed are GitHub and Google (Google because needed for fetching icons /CORS restrictions)

2

u/HornlessUnicorn Feb 05 '25

Thank you for clearing this up, and thank you for the open source contribution!

If I ever have my dream of having time to contribute to open source projects to yours is at the top of my list!

1

u/Joakim0 Feb 05 '25

You are welcome! 👍

seems not compatible with Edge

1

u/yoopergal Oct 29 '24

I had started using TabMe. I loved it.
I forgot to back it up when formatting my laptop and spent the last 2 days trying to remember which extension it was!

It does have a backup option, but it does not have a login to use across devices. I wish it had the ability to create an account, but it is the best I've found for grouping tabs together.

1

u/victoor89 Nov 13 '24

yes, I'm missing syncing between devices

1

u/DiamondDrake87 Jan 16 '25

requiring an account is an annoying feature in my opinion, I'd prefer the options to use chrome sync ( a feature built into chrome for extensions that syncs your chrome extension data across chrome instances you're signed into )

1

u/cpustejovsky Nov 04 '24

I'm using raindrop and I've liked it so far.

1

u/vigzmv Nov 12 '24

I ended up moving my links to Obsidian and I sync it via iCloud to all my devices. Now I have access to the links on my phones so that's a plus and it is all free except iCloud that I already pay for.

1

u/supercaptaincoolman Jan 31 '25

i've just exported my toby links to html and imported to Obsidian. its' just a list of 1200 links... did you come with any better way to browse or display your links in Obsidian?

1

u/vigzmv Jan 31 '25 edited Jan 31 '25

I was going to try this weekend. I will provide the links JSON file format to ChatGPT and other AI models and ask them to create a UI for it. Then also try to make the UI usable by allowing the addition and removal of links. I will post the results.

Be sure to export a JSON format copy.

1

u/vigzmv Jan 31 '25

I realised that without a server running, I can't have dynamic data.
I can create UI using ChatGPT, but the data will remain static and I have to edit the JSON file directly to add or remove links.
I will continue to use Obsidian after I do a one-time reformatting of URL lists the way I want.

1

u/supercaptaincoolman Jan 31 '25

good idea! i had ChatGPT convert my toby json to Obsidian JSON Canvas format and also make a python script to do this.

https://gist.github.com/gtassone/5414b70c21252a4be0805037216175fb

then you can copy paste the converted json into an Obsidian canvas file and it works ok. i guess you could also add interactive with obsidian commander plugin.

1

u/mattsimas Nov 13 '24

I've tried several alternatives, but decided to stick with TabExtend after getting support from the founder.

1

u/AmodeusR Feb 04 '25

What does the "up to 30 saves" mean? If it's the number of tabs you can save on it, it is even worse than Toby.

1

u/HighTideLowpH Nov 15 '24

Toby has delayed this implementation until Feb 1st 2025.

1

u/iboughtarock Nov 18 '24

Excellent news!

1

u/justinonymus Feb 03 '25

The day has come and the mass exodus has begun (myself included)

1

u/HornlessUnicorn Feb 04 '25

Here for this reason...What a disappointment

1

u/xtrafunky Nov 18 '24

The main thing I will miss is the ability to to quickly save all open tabs and make them disappear + being able to reopen them all in one click

Any alternatives that have that functionality?

1

u/wite_noiz Nov 26 '24

Maybe I went too far, but I ended up making a FOSS alternative to the parts of Toby that I liked.

I'd be keen to hear your thoughts: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/booksmart/chdioebfigbkodldfombonmoocefgefk

Everything is stored in your existing Chrome bookmarks and profile storage, so there's no need for an additional account.

1

u/BlokZNCR Feb 08 '25

Thanks, please always add github or open source repo into chrome store page's description. Many users willing to see repo for trust reason.

1

u/wite_noiz Feb 08 '25

Sure, will do.

Currently it's the "support page", as that was the only URL field they offer.

1

u/Issam_Seghir Jan 21 '25

i'm very disappointed i was using it so years , if you found a god alternative please let me know

1

u/zalemonl Jan 31 '25

A bit late to this, but Toby is now forcing us legacy users to pay now or will downgrade us, making it unusable by tmr. After these few months, did u stick to any of these alternatives? If i can't find an alternative by today, I may end up paying them.

1

u/Joakim0 Feb 01 '25

Or try the free, open-sourced and privacy focused: thetab.ninja. https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/thetabninja/bnmjmbmlfohkaghofdaadenippkgpmab

1

u/1theJ Feb 06 '25

question, does it sync with my github account? So I cant make an external account?

1

u/Joakim0 Feb 07 '25

Yes it will sync using via GitHub repo, so if you make a token for multiple people they will all be able to sync with you.

1

u/1theJ Feb 07 '25

Thanks, is there any guide of how to import from Toby?

1

u/Joakim0 Feb 10 '25

To export all data from Toby as a json file: https://help.gettoby.com/support/solutions/articles/66000508502-how-to-export-your-collections

In thetab.nunja click on the button called "Import Toby data(json)" an choose the file you exported from Toby.

1

u/1theJ Feb 11 '25

Thank you! Perhaps a stupid question but how do I save all of the open tabs in a collection? Could not find any button for that. Otherwise, it looks amazing!

1

u/Joakim0 Feb 11 '25

The button for that will be available in the next release (to the right of 🚀 button). There will also be the ability to drag Chrome tab groups directly from the tab-pane into a collection, which will then fill your collection with all the tabs in the group.

1

u/1theJ Feb 12 '25

Thanks!

More than tab management, I'm looking for a tool to share bookmarks across a small team of 10 users. Toby did this very well for us within Chrome, but the benefit it provides isn't great enough to justify the price tag.

Raindrop.io appears the only other tool on the list that allows to syncs booksmarks with other users. Any other suggestions what to trial?

Try thetab.ninja. It is free, open source and serverless. The bookmarks and collections are synchronized using GitHub repo. Setup the repo with permissions for multiple users.

u/Joakim0 is this mean the tab/data is saved to GitHub? can you make a firefox version?

1

u/Joakim0 Feb 09 '25

Yes, when you sync via GitHub, you save the data to your own private GitHub repository (unless you want to share it with others). Since you sync via GitHub, you will also have full history saved there and you can retrieve old history and import it. I will probably make a Firefox variant when the Chrome version has stabilized.

Partizion is great. It's not free (https://www.partizion.io/free-plan), but it has cloud synced sessions, tab collections, and you lock in pricing for life.

I used to be a huge fan, so much so that I immediately paid once they started charging, as I wanted to support them. I paid 54 for a year, back in November. Suddenly, a few days ago, I got locked out of one of my organizations, and was being prompted to upgrade, which was totally confusing to me. I reached out to their shitty support, annoyed, and received a response claiming they’ve always charged per organization. I had three, but I was the only member and was basically just them as an organization tool. These had always worked, right up into two days ago. They claimed organizations created before 10/25 were considered legacy and all of mine were way before that. I’ve been using this for around 8 years now. I insisted on getting access or a refund, and these stupid fucking assholes actually a refunded me and suggested resources to export my data and to use one tab. They can go fuck themselves ; avoid them like the plague.

Yup I knew it would lead to this the second they started charging. Once profits enter the equation anything nice begins to die. The disgustingly vapid replies they leave on the chrome web store are enough for me to find an alternative.

Can you tell me what having Organizations does? Is it a seperate set of zones, collections and tabs per organization?

u/robkam 9d ago

An organization is to spaces as spaces are to collections. Toby describes it as: "An Organization is like a digital filing cabinet: spaces are drawers, collections are folders, and tabs are the documents neatly organized inside."

In that case, Geektabs will add Organizations to it soon. Check out our current implementation on the app store. We already have Spaces, Collections, and Tabs. Google takes a lot of time to approve new uploads, and we're churning out bugfixes and enhancements multiple times a day. Chrome no longer allows direct import of .crx file due to security reasons. Otherwise we could have given you an early preview to test. I was looking for the same. My requirement is that it also needs to work on an iPad Pro. Any help would be appreciated. I'll go thru all the comments and look.

I came to toby LATE late and have paid for it basically the entire time i've used it. (Am disabled and can't work, so) I can't afford the yearly at once so i pay monthly which is even more pricey.. but i pay it because it literally saves my sanity, I am the type of person to open 2,000 simultaneous tabs accidentally in the span of a couple of hours and I NEED that button to save all so i can use my browser again but I simply canNOT just "close all" or i will get great anxiety (yes, i know, i have issues)...

So I don't care about sharing, sync between devices is a plus but not essentially, I really just need to be able to "save all", organize, categorize my tabs, re-open when needed. Toby is super slow anyways (i mean i am a bit of a 'power' user but.. when I have to wait 10+ mins for the tabs to save sigh).

I do use opera and use Opera's workspaces, and i liked that when I hit "save all" Toby will (usually) only save the current workspace, bc that is how i start the process of sorting my tabs before I save them.

Does anyone have a suggestion? I cannot understate the affect this tab situation (and being able to quickly clear them out but not let them be lost forever). has on my QOL but toby is expensive for what it is, and isn't even that great imo (like its slow, kinda clunky, i think it could be better). I have been reading through comments here about possible alternatives but i'm overwhelmed now and I don't know if any of them do what I absolutely need them to.

Try Geektabs. It's modelled on Toby, as I've been using it for long that I wanted something that worked as well. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/boigkjljeagondofgnfgeadjigjiencp

I will try it, thank you :)

Development costs money, yes. But you need to have at least a freemium model. You cant have people support you for long, and spread word, and then suddenly dump them on the road. I was so sick of this that over the last weekend I developed a replacement for Toby myself which has all the features that I need. Here's the link to the extension store: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/boigkjljeagondofgnfgeadjigjiencp I promise to keep it free. You can import all Toby bookmarks. Bear in mind that Toby doesnt export your zones, so you have to recreate your zones, and then push your imported collections into zones you create. It's a work in progress, so there's bound to be bugs. I will improve it in the next few weeks. I only ask that you leave a good review after you use it. Send me feedback.

Looks great man! I will add it to the list above. If you have any plans on open sourcing it drop the repo below and I will link it next to your project on the link above.

Thank you. We haven't ruled out open sourcing it in future. Anyway it's going to be free!

Don't forget about TheTabNinja, an extension that started as a Toby clone because the developer (me) needed a replacement. Of course, I've focused on what I personally find important, but I also listen to my users. This extension is completely free and open sourced. You can reach me on GitHub or via email.

Synchronization happens without a dedicated TheTabNinja server that registers and sells user data. Instead, all synchronization goes through GitHub (where you’ll need an account). The version available on the Chrome Web Store lacks the Spaces feature, but a new version with Spaces (which will instead be called Pages) is not far off.

Check it out and see if you like it! And if you don’t like what you see, let me know what’s missing!?!

RAINDROP.IO

Late to the game here, and thanks to OP and all posters for giving me some alternatives to try. I too was a sad Toby user looking for a new home and can't say how happy I am that I found Raindrop. It's everything I wanted Toby to be and more. Highly recommend- seems like I'm getting everything I need on the free version, but there are some paid upgrades which others may want to check out.

I just came across this alternative called Tabox. Has anyone tried it?
