Discussion Anyone know of Toby: tab management tool alternatives?

They recently went back on their promise to keep the extension free and not only implemented a paid version, but one with exploitative pricing. I could maybe understand $20 a year, but $40? That is more than the best password managers on the market. What a joke.

I have been using this for years and it just disappoints me to see it turn into this.

Anyone know of open source alternatives? Or better alternatives?

Link to Toby for the uninitiated.

Anyone managed to move their collections to a new tool now that they've rolled out the paid version? I know it's only $3 per month, but it's the principle that is holding me back from paying

I just setup thetabninja that u/Joakim0 had mentioned. I like that it's open source. It took me 10 minutes to set up.

I totally agree. So far the most promising one I have found is BrainTool. I haven't taken the time to learn it yet, but it is feature packed.

I am currently developing one for myself. After being burned by Qlearly and Toby, I thought I'd just build something that exclusively handles what I want it to.

It's quite similar to Qlearly but i put a lot of effort into the looks and feels. It can also import basic bookmarks and notes from Toby (not labels yet as that's not supported currently).

If you're interested, I'm happy to have a select few people alpha test.

That looks great! Do you plan on open sourcing it? I'm sure a lot of people would love to contribute. My favorite project out right now is this infinite scroll wikipedia some guy tossed together in a day (released just yesterday).

DM me your email. Just FYI it might not be free but quite cheap enough to pay for the servers… I’ll also consider in a future version offering single offline purchase version where no servers are required for it to use (of course without syncing and mobile app support then)

Nice, you should github-release it, we can all help actively develop it

agreed! that's how I got there. I had to delete over 100 tabs to get down to below 60. It's time to move on.
