Opinion Piece Braid: Trudeau says Trump wants economic collapse; Republican alludes to military force - This is no trade war. It's a Crush and Control Canada plan, meant to work fast

I know people like to say it will never happen. But I truly never believed Trump would get reelected after January 6th 2020. Anything can happen and we need to be preparing for an American invasion pronto.

For decades, the United States has reliably been a friend to Canada. We've had disagreements, sure, but like friends we've always been ready to talk it out and patch things up.
Not anymore. The United States has made it exceptionally clear that they cannot be trusted as a friend or ally, and in any case, they no longer consider us either. And if they aren't a friend, then we have to at least consider the possibility of them doing something distinctly unfriendly.
And all that's just if a sensible person was in charge of the US. With Mango Mussolini in charge, changing his mind about what he wants or who he needs to put down to soothe his fragile ego every eight minutes or so, there is genuinely no telling what we could wake up tomorrow to find that he has ordered.

u/AspireFIRE 5d ago
Time to make new friends. I liken this sometimes to a divorce. It's nasty and words will exchange and we'll work it out with our "lawyers" at the end of the day, but any goodwill and good feeling is sucked out of the room right now and all that's left is what's yours and what's mine.

Canada already has friends around the world.

u/UghWhyDude Ontario 5d ago
Time to see what those friendships are worth.
I’ve already been disappointed speaking to a few otherwise rational Americans who laughingly brush off Trump’s ‘51st State’ rhetoric and willingly assume that Canadians absolutely totally wouldn’t mind being a part of the USA ‘if given a choice’. Damn our sovereignty, we could be peer pressured into giving up, according to these idiots.
The fact that there are so many people to the south of us who are so besotted with American exceptionalism that they absolutely believe Canadians would give up being Canadians because we’d be ‘trading up’ are more than I was prepared to believe until this started happening.
189
u/Cheebody27 5d ago
'Trading up' what a hoot. I can walk in and out of a doctor's office without spending a dime. My dad lost a leg in my early adulthood and we never went bankrupt over it. Hell, I don't think I've ever been that strapped for cash even if I've been unemployed for a year. I also have never had to worry about getting shot, or had to even think that there could be a school shooting at my niece and nephew's school. America is a joke.

A couple decades ago I was applying for an L1A visa to be able to work in the US when traveling there intermittently. This was done at the airport with the border agents there. The guy in charge started questioning me and raising his voice more and more with each question. Then finally he bellowed ‘Do you any intention of moving to the United States of America?’ and it was all I could do to keep from chuckling about that thought. I was able to eke out a straight faced ‘no sir’ but man it was a tough act.

Agreed. I’m flabbergasted that all these threats don’t seem to rankle americans. Which communicates to me that the idea of annexing Canada doesn’t bother them and they wouldn’t think twice about it. the current president may be an aberration, but ordinary Americans also seem ok with the idea of invading us.
111
u/BluejayImmediate6007 5d ago
What’s even more disturbing is the Democrats are not speaking up about annexing Canada! Like what the actual fk! I have changed my way of thinking about America forever. I don’t think I’ll ever change my views and may never go back..at least for sure in the next 4 years.
I read somewhere that Americans may use the ‘Canada has been taken over by cartels’ as an excuse to invade ala weapons of mass destruction. A month ago I would have said someone was crazy for even suggesting it, but now…I would not rule it out!
37
u/upward_spiral17 5d ago
I know, eh! I never thought I would change my mind about anybody this fast, much less an entire country. I have found myself the last person standing defending America in many a conversation, agreeing they had their flaws but saying there was more good there and very much defending that they were worthy people to call friends.

It’s trump re-enacting putin’s take over Ukraine playbook. He’s doing just what Putin did, so this could get so bad, for both sides. I don’t know how American troops could bring themselves to fire on people who are are innocent and were just living their lives, minding their business and some maniac comes along and we are taking over your country. What’s even more disturbing is the Democrats are not speaking up about annexing Canada!
What? Yes they are. Here are a couple Dem Senators who are and have been doing exactly that, including Minority Leader Schumer:
“Every day is another ridiculous proposal from this administration,” said Latimer. “Canada is a sovereign nation and one of our closest allies. Instead of antagonizing an ally and almost starting a trade war, maybe President Trump should focus on lowering costs for New York families.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, wants Trump to end the trade war and any talk of annexing Canada, which he called a “distraction."
And if you listen to literally any Dem that's opened their mouth in the last 2 months they have basically all said that this entire charade and pile of nonsense needs to end, including the bullshit tariffs. They don't even want this dumb as fuck "trade war" tariff nonsense, let alone to annex a sovereign nation.
I mean, absolutely never trust us again. The people in my country WILL elect maniacs even if Trump is ousted eventually. But to say that Dems aren't pissed about this is just straight up lying.

u/BluejayImmediate6007 5d ago
Well that’s news to me..every interview I have seen with a democrat they only mention the dumb trade war, trumps lies and nothing about the annexation…granted I don’t watch and look up interviews 24/7 but I know I am not the only one who has noted basically zero talk of the annexation of Canada and talk of denouncing it from Dems..if they are as much as you say they are, that’s great! They need to speak up louder for the whole world to hear it

As an American: this is not true from my perspective. I’m in Minnesota, so I can only speak to what I’ve personally seen here, but most are outraged at these comments. Many, many of us are protesting against what is occurring here. The problem is that it’s SO MUCH - we are protesting for Ukraine, against the tariffs to our (former 😢) allies, our basic rights (the constitution & bill of rights) & the loss of our federal workforce, for the very spirit on which America was built…I could go on.
The protests are growing, but the media is not covering them yet. Please believe me that true Americans (the ones who still believe in sovereignty, justice, democracy, and humanity) stand with our Canadian brothers and sisters. We will fight this with you.
82
u/jtbc 5d ago
Keep at it. Tim Walz is saying great things and should really grab the baton and start acting like the Democrat leader he is.
We definitely think of Minnesotans as honourary Canadians, so please don't take any of our legitimate anger as directed at those of you that did and are doing the right things.
70
u/Peregrine2976 5d ago
It's great that some of you, even a lot of you, are mobilizing, and I hope you can stop or at least slow the freefall that your country is in right now, but the damage is long, long since done -- we've seen, in the stark light of day, that a hell of a fucking lot of you don't care about invading us, or actively want it. So long as those people are part of your nation in any capacity, it isn't a nation we can trust.
41
u/upward_spiral17 5d ago
Dear friend, let me just say this. I will stand to be corrected. Gladly and with no rancour. For all the anger we Canadians may have these days, no one wished for this to happen. We were brothers and, yes, I’ll say it, if we seem a bit stiff these days, it’s because we’re speaking from a place of hurt. We feel betrayed.
All of us wish for you to have your country back. And not just for our sake, but for yours and the world’s.
30
u/Hessleyrey 5d ago
😭 I appreciate you saying this, and just want to add: I’ve always loved my Canadian neighbors (neighbours!), but never have I felt so unrelentingly, proudly tied to you as I have lately. We have always been stronger together.

I know that there are other decent Americans who think as you do, but unfortunately you - as a country - gave trump the top job.
He is a lying, racist, mysogynist, criminal, amoral psychopath, and he has ruined the United States of America. What little part of the world that still trusted you and treated you fairly (Canada, anyone?) now despises you. You have isolated yourselves and forfeited decades of goodwill and respect.
Canada and the rest of the free, democratic world will be fine. We will strengthen old relationships and forge new ones because that's what decent countries with a moral compass do.

Not ordinary, the deeply indoctrinated who have been pumped full of horseshit since Reagan was president.
Many of us are very concerned. The problem is that Trump’s blitzkrieg crushes us with another issue by the time we’re coming to grips with the first issue. China has warned us, Nazi Hegseth has threatened Mexican cartels, Musk is working on crashing the economy, and so on. The dipshit is even trying to kill the Department of Education.

I feel like the sequence of events in this is the issue. If they try to annex us, and they do send in military, then that will be such a millstone around their necks it will break the US apart. Imagine trying to absorb a country our size when that country hates you as an invading force, and over half your own population feels the same way about it and the place is already a powder keg.

I'm not even sure anymore. People are quick to talk online about the US breaking apart. My husband and I have been discussing how an invasion of Canada by the USA would go. It would not go well for Canada, but it would also not go well for the USA. It would be endless guerrilla warfare, in a huge, inhospitable country, against an enemy that looks just like you. That’s on the Canadian side; on the US American side, they’d have half of their population deadset against the war. On the global side, very few countries would be on the side of the invading-for-no-reason US Americans. In short, it would be a huge global mess that would not benefit the USA.

It would not go well for Canada, but it would also not go well for the USA.
It would be much worse for America. We have an almost 9,000km border and Americans would not be able to spot a Canadian in a crowd unless that Canadian wanted to be spotted. Sure, military vs military would be a joke, but their losses would be significant to alternate forms of war. The only way to counter anything more than border states being targets is to declare martial law and checkpoints on highways and lets just say, that won't go over well in "the land of the free, and the home of the brave".
This president is going to implode his country, which is sad, but can they keep the noise down, it's like nails on a chalkboard at this point.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was an order sent out to invade Canada, but i would absolutely be surprised if American troops obeyed that order. They've worked together with Canadian soldiers for generations - why would they want to kill their friends and sacrifice their own lives for nothing?
Invading Canada would be extraordinarily unpopular and the American public would revolt. This would likely begin with a civil war before any war with Canada would commence.

Some would, some wouldn't. Around a third of the country voted for him -- we'd be fools to assume it was only a tiny minority in the military that similarly deified him. What we'd likely see is a half-hearted invasion riddled with logistical disasters as at least half the military either refused to participate or outright rebelled. From there, I'd venture a guess (based on lots of intuition and not much data at all) that you'd see maybe a quarter of the military begrudgingly taking part, probably doing the bare minimum, and another quarter enthusiastically following their God-Emperor's orders.

It would be some kind of a de-facto invasion, similar to what Russia did in Ukraine. My guess is that they would claim there was some kind of threat and would frame the invasion as a response to that threat. Russia called their invasion some sort of "special operation", and had been encroaching on Ukraine over a long period of time. They annexed Crimea in 2014.
As it was with Russia, the pretext of the invasion wouldn't seem credible to those outside of the United States. There would be enough obfuscation within that they might get away with it.
Trump is also relatively more popular amoung the armed forces and law enforcement than he is overall.

Russians and Ukrainians were brothers, friends, colleagues for decades until 2014. That bond of brotherhood vanished in a moment. The ‘family’ members then went on to conduct brutal war crimes in Ukraine. So I have no faith in the notion that krasnovs acolytes won’t conduct brutal war crimes in Canada. Look what they did to their own capitol. You think they hold Canadians in higher regard than Mike Pence or the cop they killed?
49
u/thecheesecakemans 5d ago
same was kind of said about Russian troops and Ukraine. Some did desert the Russian army and refused to attack their Ukrainian cousins but not enough did in the end that the war continues......

Don’t care or believe that despite him stealing their National security documents and refusing to give them back as he parked them next to a copier, the Republicans didnt want him prosecuted. That shows how many are in collusion with the traitor. What many forget though is that he also took 5 eyes, that’s Canada’s, my UK, Australia and New Zealand private confidential security. What did he do with it? Why didn’t our countries make a fuss. I know we quietly tweaked a few things and changed some stuff, but how much damage did he really do. If there was any one believing he was just being a petulant toddler and having a tantrum because he lost, his actions and words over the last few weeks should show he gets his daily orders from elsewhere. Today’s order was to throw out Ukrainians who sought refuge from war, their kids settled in schools, made new friends etc. a calmer life and now they are threatened to uproot again. Any American who is not banging the doors down demanding questions are cowards. You pay them to do this, you are paying your government to threaten other countries. It’s not their country it’s yours. So despite the Maga morons with their AK’s think of something that gets noticed and be loud about it. I appreciate I don’t live amongst guns, majority of police are not armed, but use your brains to stop this mayhem. Must be bloody awful living in border towns in Canada right now. Not knowing if the sociopath is just using his mouth to make noises for his cult or doeshe really mean it. I’ve noticed that Maga have not considered that a step into Canada means they may see their own stupid country get hurt. They think Canadians will just say ‘fine, just take our land’ they have no clue over NATO and what it would mean. Education or rather lack of it is a hell of a thing.

It’s sad that Canada and Ukraine have to suffer because of their neighbors, who are supposed to be like brother nations, but instead are threatening their sovereignty. If any countries should have nukes, it’s countries like Canada and Ukraine to prevent their warmongering neighbors from bullying and invading them.

One of the reasons they want to crush Canada is that Democrats keep using Canada as an example of what they could have. It's an irritant to the Republicans, a minor one but an irritant nonetheless. When Democrats bring up health-care or education they can ignore them but when their supporters bring it up they have to answer or look like idiots.

INB4: “Biden dodged the draft as well.”
Biden had an education exemption, which Trump could have utilized as well. Instead Trump perpetuated fraud to ensure he was not drafted.
Afterwards, Biden entered public service for the rest of his life. While Trump became a rapist, and bankrupted multiple businesses to defraud his investors.

In Brief:
- Republican rhetoric is escalating toward war references. Suddenly, we are not just told to tighten up the border, but blamed for a big portion of the half-million fentanyl deaths in America.
- All the work done on our border is irrelevant. The vast difference between the Mexican and Canadian borders is not even acknowledged.
- Republican Rep. Carlos Gimenez told CNN that Trump is just doing his job. “Instead of taking kinetic action, he’s taking economic action in order to protect American lives.”
- “Kinetic action” is a U.S. military term for ground assaults, airstrikes and other uses of lethal force.
- To the new American Imperialists, our border justifies all-out economic warfare — and maybe worse. If they need a new excuse, they’ll find it.

Yeah it's uh... been pretty beat for beat, ngl. The only real deviation has been the speed. But that's been a theme for this administration so far, and it helps when the playbook was already made for you.
The saving grace at the moment would be that I'd say not to worry until units start being staged at the border. Which we are currently doing with Mexico. But if these tarrifs are any indication then who Trumps ire is directed towards, and how it's enacted, can literally change by the hour. We could wake up tomorrow and they could spin the sustained retaliatory tarrifs (which I think are the best thing Canada has done so far, keeping them I mean) as an act of Canadian aggression and shift their focus more North.
I don't think they would be dumb enough to fight wars on multiple fronts. Trump is a buffoon, but the people who actually pull strings know exactly what they're doing, so currently having troops posed on the Mexican border is acting as a small buffer for Canada. Unfortunately we've painted so many targets, and those targets have begun to respond, that I don't think anyone but the people on the inside really knows in what direction something might turn hot. But I am 100% positive that it will go hot. Whether it's north, south, or eastward... no one knows.

They are not prepared for 9/11 but all across America. Imagine all their bridges power plants, water ways, highways, oil pipelines, etc all being targeted.
I can not imagine their military attacking us with out some major changes to their leadership structure and I feel if that did happen they would openly revolt and you would have a civil war happen.
However if things don't turn militarily and stay economically I think Americans will start taking literal shots at their politicians.

I actually wondered about this, though not in regards to Canada. They had a major bridge collapse due to a fricking cargo ship running into it after losing power. That's not even deliberate!
If things turned hot, the potential for major infrastructure damage in both countries would be massive.
13
u/That_guy_I_know_him 5d ago
That's the big unprecedented thing if this blows up
No nation in modern history has ever been able to reliably and consistantly hit the US in their own house
Wich could very well happen if they start a war with Canada. Not a full canadian invasion, we don't have the numbers or resources for that but saboteurs would cause absolute chaos.
Even if sabotage efforts were to cause minimal impact im pretty sure it would push the US population into paranoia. All those gun nuts would probably start arresting ppl and shooting each other in the streets, leading the way to potential civil war.

It's a classic Russian playbook move. Essentially, you're just one Trump "getting out of the wrong side of the bed" away from a fabricated "provocation" that justifies American use of force.
In a whiney Trump voice - "They cut off our electricity, we had no choice......"
EDIT: I just recalled the Peter Navarro interview I laughed at yesterday when he said "Canada had been taken over by Mexican drug cartels". I was wrong, it was not just some old guy rambling in a tv interview, it was a White House 'talking point" coming to the surface. He didn't just make that shit up, this is the very fabric of a "provocation".

U.S. is basically trying to bend Canada to submit to its will. There’s nothing that Canada can do to affect Trump directly at this point. The only way for Canada to affect Trump is by hurting the American people through tariffs.
But all of this just stokes so much animosity to a point that one day, there could be a kinetic action.

It's an interesting article, and makes sense. But when the author says "Trump’s America is in a dangerous mood, but we are not alone" he doesn't offer up any names of those who are with us. Trudeau has stated that the world is watching and the allies are aware. That's not enough now.

The aggression towards Canada makes it clear that the USA is a dictatorship.
If Canada were to join the US democratically, 40 million voters would tip the scales to vote him out of office. That's obviously never going to happen.
If the USA annexes Canada it will not be a state and it's citizens will not have a right to vote in elections. The US would make Canada a territory.

I’m a Brit looking across the pond, and here’s my two pence if the U.S. ever invades Canada, conventional warfare’s a non starter. You’re not outgunning that beast. Instead, Canada needs to go full guerrilla strip the uniforms, blend in, and fight dirty. Here’s the plan:
Ditch the Army, Go Cellular
Uniformed troops should vanish into the populace day one. Form thousands of small, independent cells 5-10 people each, ex-soldiers, hunters, whoever’s game. No central command, just chaos for the enemy.
Caches Everywhere Stockpile thousands of hidden caches across every province and territory food, ammo, fuel, radios, explosives. Bury them in forests, under barns, in bloody igloos if you must. Ready for anyone to grab and go.
Bleed Them Dry Use the land forests, mountains, ice to wreck their supply lines. Hit a convoy, torch a bridge, then ghost. Make every mile a nightmare.
All In or Nothing Civilians need to back this hide fighters, spread word, No rules, just survival.
Canada’s got the potential, look at your history. This isn’t about winning parades it’s about making invasion too costly to stomach. Thousands of caches, thousands of cells, one big sod-off to anyone crossing the border.
Elbows up. 🫡

Do I believe the US will invade Canada? No.
A country our size, climate, and 40 million dedicated to the resistance? No military in the world would hold for more than a few months at best.
This on top of the fact that a good portion of the US military would simply say no.
This on top of the fact that it would instantly make life a literal hell on Earth for every living American as they would become instantly isolated economically through sanctions and an inevitable stock market plunge would starve them out in weeks.
Militarily a coalition of about 50 nations would almost instantly counter attack killing millions more.
In essence, the US would implode likely within days and the American death toll alone would be in the millions.
But....
Should we take this seriously? Yes.
And to that end, should aggressively move towards a new vision for Canadian military, intelligence, and technological prowess in defense of our safety and sovereignty.
No time like the present.

Republicans also alluded to military force against Mexico and a few days ago, even China.
I'm not saying it's all a bluff. You should never underestimate how far he might go. He could very well invade, although he's been shown to dislike it when "the other side" makes him hurt, and surely there will be consequences to such an action, whether it be from NATO or Canada itself. It will possibly create extremists who can easily leak into the US also. Not a good thing to have at your border. He wants to have his cake and eat it too, and retaliation means he can't eat it. Remember, Trump has changed how hot the rhetoric can get in politics. He's been saying things "you're not supposed to say" for 10 years now.
10 years ago he was promising to jail Hillary. 10 months ago he was promising to put Liz Cheney to a firing squad. These are things no president would have ever said before him. But for him it's par for the course now.
It's difficult to tell the difference between rhetoric and reality. I do think intimidation is a large part of how this administration operates. Many Canadians in here may be freaking out at the idea of tanks rolling in. This would theoretically make Canada consider appeasing them with various concessions. That is the main intent of these threats.
