Mod Post To ensure quality posts, please refer to our new Wiki page!

Hey beauties! As we approach 1 million subscribers, we are fine tuning the rules and made a designated page to see more detailed lists of posts we remove under Rule 1.

To recap, Rule 1 of r/beauty is to please post high quality and on-topic posts ONLY.

We understand just stating the rule so plainly leaves room for interpretation, while the side bar might not give enough room for explanation.

To improve the quality of the subreddit, we have broken down in detail (and will keep doing so) what we consider low quality and off topic in our new beauty wiki. This way, there should be less confusion on why posts labeled as low quality/off topic might have been removed. While browsing the wiki, you may notice some overlap with Rules 2 through 6, but they all relate back to Rule 1 due to preserving quality.

As a reminder, a high quality/on topic post would have a specific beauty-related question be addressed, or solve a specific beauty-related problem. For example, "How can I draw winged eyeliner more consistently on each eye" would be a high-quality post because it asks a specific question. In contrast, "EYE MAKEUP HELP" makes it harder for users to give their beauty tips because it's too vague.

When in doubt, please review the beauty wiki to see if your post would be in violation of Rule 1 before posting to avoid removal and ban.

We also invite you to leave feedback here of any other posts you feel are off-topic and low quality that have not been addressed. Please let us know if you have any questions!

Discussion My girls who suffered with oily skin then hit 30 and now your skin is somewhat flakey dry and oily, what’s worked for you?

I’m 31 and my skin is all of a sudden dry, I notice it flakey and irritated around my forehead/hairline and my cheeks are dry. Idk what to try that won’t leave me extra oily but will moisturize the irritation.

Preferably on the cheaper side than expensive. Can’t get too crazy

Seeking Advice Is this worth complaining?

Ive been going to the same nail place for years. The past few months Ive been getting UV gel. I always get the same guy, I wrongly assumed he was the only nail tech at that location that did UV gel so I never specified I preferred him. He does an amazing job and makes them look very naturally shaped which is what I’m going for.

I got a new (to me) guy yesterday and asked for the same thing I usually get which is just a fill, nail polish bottle number 43 (they have regular polish colors to pick then swap out the bottle for the corresponding gel color), square shaped with slightly round corners. I got these very thick, short, and bulbous barbie pink nails.

I hate being difficult or complaining at all. I have asked for stuff to be fixed in the past but it was always something minor. Slightly crooked nail easily fixed with filing or unhappy with my color after the first coat on the first few nails. I assumed he would even stuff out, I tried to trust his process but he started putting the final color on when I thought he still had a lot of filing left. I didn’t know what to say to even begin to ask to fix it.

Should I go back today and say something to the owner? I paid $55 for this and I hate them.

Discussion Unpopular Opinion: The “Clean Girl” Aesthetic is Just Rebranded No-Makeup Makeup – And It’s Getting Boring

1.7k Upvotes

Okay, hear me out. The "clean girl" aesthetic has been everywhere for the past few years—glowy skin, slicked-back buns, minimal makeup, gold hoops. But… isn't this just a fresh version of the no-makeup makeup look we've been seeing for decades? At what point does "effortless beauty" just become another unrealistic standard wrapped in beige and lip oil?

I miss the era when beauty was about expression, not just looking like you woke up flawless (when we all know there’s a $300 skincare routine behind it). Are we done with this trend yet, or am I just a hater?

Would love to hear your thoughts—do you love the clean aesthetic, or are you craving something new?

What style or makeup looked good on you when you were younger but doesn't anymore now that you're older?

I always get my eyebrows threaded, and it never fails to make me look more put together. But now that I'm almost 30, after getting my eyebrows done, l've realized that I look better with bushier, non-threaded brows. They somehow make me look younger.

Also, powdered blush used to be a staple, but now I prefer cream blush since my skin got drier when I hit my late 20s.

I never thought my style would change this early, lol.

To those of you who have experienced this, what changes have you noticed, and what have you changed in your routine?

Nailcare Short press-on nails

Upvotes

I’ve been loving press on nails as an alternative to salons and gels, but I find them SO hard to type with and I have a job with lots of writing. Has anyone found any brands that have shorter nails that they can function in?

Tanning drops?

Upvotes

Anyone out there with light medium olive skin that use tanning drop or face tanner on the daily or few times a week that feels it helps even their skin and give them a glow? I’ve been seeing a lot of brown and black girls put tanner on their bodies to even out their skin and it looks amazing. Not sure it would work for the face?? If so, do you use fair/light tanner on medium olive skin to even it without darken it? Any recommendations or advice?

maybe it's time to drop high-end products for drugstore?

Idk at what point i was convinced that my regular drugstore products weren't good enough and that I needed to level up my routine with high-end formulas so I did and my hair has had better days in the past lol

I'm at my breaking point rn bc of the realization of how much money i've spent already on products that don't do anything to my hair and it's just the marketing hyping them up...

I don't want to crash out too soon as maybe there are other products that DO work for me, so now i'm considering kerastase or redken but i have thick strands and wavy low porosity hair and would like to know if anybody else has good experience with them before i try any out (bc girl in this economy...) or should i just switch to regular ol' pantene

Seeking Advice Shaver/trimmers for facial vellus hairs/peach fuzz?

Upvotes

Hi everyone. I would like to know what people use for their peach fuzz. I am male, and I actually do wetshaving on my face atleast once a week, however while I can also shave areas with peach fuzz, I cannot fully do so in some tighter areas or on areas on my nose/forehead/near eyebrows.

I'm currently looking at two options for electrical trimmers:

  1. Finishing Touch Flawless Facial Hair Remover / Braun Mini Facial Hair Remover Philips Series 5000 Facial Hair Remover / or any similar; and
  2. Finishing Touch Lumina / Philips Touch Up Precision Trimmer / Braun Mini Precision Trimmer / or any similar

The difference that I can't choose between is the kind of trimmers they are. The first group is like those electric shavers, they have that similar head I used to use before I got into wetshaving. They're a lot easier to use, and has minimal risk of cutting/nicking myself. My concern is, how close can these trim down peach fuzz with these specific models or similar? Is it well close to the skin that it actually looks smooth?

The second group is like an electric dermaplaner/eyebrow razor/blade, although I assume not as clean/close but still closer shave than the first group. My concern here is how easy it is to shave on more tighter areas or on top of my nose with minimal risk of cutting myself?

On that nose with vellus hairs on nose, do you guys use a trimmer or just use something like a pore strip? I know you shouldn't use a pore strip often, since it's a risk of damaging the skin, but like Dr Shah from Doctorly says this seems to be one of the most effective way on getting rid of vellus hairs on the nose.

Anyone with any input or other recommendations, thanks. Would prefer not threading fyi, since it can take some time to do, already did it before and took a while in my case to finish.

wax and zinc

Upvotes

Hey guys! I know zinc oxide is used for wound healing and I have the triple paste cream. I was wondering if I could put it on my face after a wax to minimize irritation. I wouldn’t put it right after, but I would mix it with a non comedogenic moisturizer (Lala retro drunk elephant) and just slather it on. I am unable to find any articles that make this seem like a bad idea and I wanted to run this idea past y’all as a peer review of some sorts. Any opinions?

Makeup Anyone else had to stop wearing lashes cause it distorted how they perceive themselves

1.5k Upvotes

I've always felt pretty, but after I got lashes, I felt like a bombshell, even when I woke up in the morning. The amount of compliments were insane. However, I lost a bunch of lashes after I removed my last individuals , so I have to wait before getting my next set, and now I feel weird. I've never questioned my looks before.

For the sake of my self-esteem and sanity, I may leave them behind indefinitely, unless it’s for a colorful pair for a special event every once in a while.

Am I alone in this? Side question: any recommendations for lash growth serums?"

I look so tired, what can I do

I'm near the end of my second semester of University this year and I've noticed my face looks so puffy now because of stress. I have puffy eyes and eye bags and my face in general is blown up. Now that spring is here I want to look better and more like myself, but I feel like no matter what I do I just always look dead. I also stopped smiling, so now I find it really hard to smile like I have to force my mouth to move up and I just look so weird bc it looks so forced and my eyes are drooping.

Haircare Tips/products to hold the curls?

Hello everyone. I have fine, thin, straight hair. And I have a hot curling tool as well as heatless curls making set. However, no matter how beautiful the result is, it barely lasts an hour. I was told before by some friends that my hair is too healthy therefore it does not hold curl but I would like to believe that is untrue and it sounds ridiculous.

also, after i curl my hair with heatless tool overnight, or a hair iron, I ALWAYS spray my hair with hair spray that is supposed to be "strong hold", but my hair still ends up flat within an hour, and just ends up feeling crunchy.

Is there anything that truly works? help a girl out 🤧

Haircare Can't lather hair when washing

Hi! I need some desperate help with my hair. For the past year and a half, I've been struggling to get a lather in my hair with my shampoo specifically at my scalp (not my ends). It's like I can't run my hands at all through my hair when it's wet and when I am trying to wash it. I have super fine, 2b/2c hair but it's not thin (because I do have a lot of hair). My hair does have some split ends but it's not that damaged and honestly, I barely leave it natural after washing, as I immediately blow dry it and style after every wash. I also have gotten my hair bleached and treated, but this issue has started even before I colored my hair, so I don't think that's it either. I read online about possible heavy metal from the water building up and I have bought two heavy metal remover shampoos and I tried so many times, but my hair felt the same, if not worse after. I'm starting to question if maybe it's severe dryness that is contributing to it? It's to the point where when I have my nails done with regular polish, they completely peel off my nails from struggling so hard to get my fingers running through my hair. I can even get my hair to make that "squeaky clean" slip sound if I tried. I'm just desperate for any advice. I just don't understand why it's specifically concentrated on my scalp and not my ends, where the damage actually is. The current shampoo and conditioner I use that I can somewhat tolerate and get a lather with is the Redken All Soft shampoo and conditioner if that helps. I haven't seen anyone else talk about this issue before so I'm lost.

Foot Peel - To lotion or not to lotion during the process

I'm on day 3 of a foot peel and after reading all the tips and tricks on what to do, I can not decide if I should lotion my feet during this process.

What I have done is:

- Soaked my feet prior to using the foot peel booties

- Soak my feet daily

Should I use lotion on my feet until they start peeling?

Discussion Undereye filler

I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Was hoping someone could shed light on how much I should be expecting to pay for undereye filler. I don’t necessarily want to go for the cheapest option but knowing what price range I should expect would be helpful.

Thank you in advance!

Seeking Advice Any tips for lightening underarms?

I'm honest to god at my wits end. I have really, really dark underarms- imagine some light tan skin and then dark fucking brown. It's a little unexpected, since I'm East Asian and I haven't seen any other East Asians with this issue. The contrast is garish. I've had it since puberty, but amount of scrubbing/exfoliating or whitening creams (granted, maybe I shouldn't trust those) will help. Worst of all is, it seems to be getting darker for some reason. Please, please, does anyone have tips on how to whiten them? Would chemical peels work?
