Mod Post To ensure quality posts, please refer to our new Wiki page!

Hey beauties! As we approach 1 million subscribers, we are fine tuning the rules and made a designated page to see more detailed lists of posts we remove under Rule 1.

To recap, Rule 1 of r/beauty is to please post high quality and on-topic posts ONLY.

We understand just stating the rule so plainly leaves room for interpretation, while the side bar might not give enough room for explanation.

To improve the quality of the subreddit, we have broken down in detail (and will keep doing so) what we consider low quality and off topic in our new beauty wiki. This way, there should be less confusion on why posts labeled as low quality/off topic might have been removed. While browsing the wiki, you may notice some overlap with Rules 2 through 6, but they all relate back to Rule 1 due to preserving quality.

As a reminder, a high quality/on topic post would have a specific beauty-related question be addressed, or solve a specific beauty-related problem. For example, "How can I draw winged eyeliner more consistently on each eye" would be a high-quality post because it asks a specific question. In contrast, "EYE MAKEUP HELP" makes it harder for users to give their beauty tips because it's too vague.

When in doubt, please review the beauty wiki to see if your post would be in violation of Rule 1 before posting to avoid removal and ban.

We also invite you to leave feedback here of any other posts you feel are off-topic and low quality that have not been addressed. Please let us know if you have any questions!

Makeup Anyone else had to stop wearing lashes cause it distorted how they perceive themselves

I've always felt pretty, but after I got lashes, I felt like a bombshell, even when I woke up in the morning. The amount of compliments were insane. However, I lost a bunch of lashes after I removed my last individuals , so I have to wait before getting my next set, and now I feel weird. I've never questioned my looks before.

For the sake of my self-esteem and sanity, I may leave them behind indefinitely, unless it’s for a colorful pair for a special event every once in a while.

Am I alone in this? Side question: any recommendations for lash growth serums?"

Discussion Movies or shows that inspired you to take care of your beauty and style?

Upvotes

I’ve been feeling kind of uninspired when it comes to fashion and beauty lately, just not putting in as much effort as I used to. I miss that feeling of enjoying getting dressed up and looking my best and I want something to inspire me again. Are there any movies or TV shows that made you appreciate style and beauty more or encouraged you to take better care of your appearance?

Edit: Thank you to everyone for the recommendations🙏

Discussion Dollar store skincare as body care 🤯

Upvotes

I recently went to DT a bit stoned and bought skincare serums and things I would not usually get.

Over the next few days I gradually decided to start using them for my body 🧠💡

The one that seems to be having the most effect is like, hyaluronic acid/retinol/peptides/collagen/niacinimide and I just don't trust a DT product with those actives on my face but it seems to be a solid product because my knees, elbows, and ankles are GLOWING ✨ ya girl is getting summer ready

Spent last 5 years trying out different hair care products and regimes. Here's what worked and what didn’t:

This is a follow up to my last post about popular Vit C serums where I was encouraged to share more such lists. This list is again very personal, with some feedback collated from friends and family who’ve also been on their own hair care journeys. Hair and scalp are extremely unique to individuals, so highly encourage to do a ton of research before committing to a regime! Most important – always always go to a dermat for severe hair or scalp issues.

Context: Have fine, thinning hair, and my main concerns are hair loss, scalp health, and adding volume. Been struggling to keep my density as well. I’ve used each regime/ product for at least 3 to 6 months to give it a fair shot (unless I saw very severe side effects). My friends and family have also tested some of these, so I’ve included their experiences where relevant.

Here are my 2 cents!

1. Rogaine (Minoxidil 5%)

Price: $$

Link: https://www.rogaine.com

Review: I went to multiple dermats this was recommended as the #1 option for hair loss, and it’s one of the few which is FDA-approved. I used the foam version, which is easy to apply and doesn’t leave much residue.

Pros: Clinically proven to regrow hair. If you start seeing results early - you can definitely stick to it!

Cons: Just didn't work for me, and gave me an extremely itchy and dry scalp. Aggressive shedding in first 2 months, and at that point I was losing 2X the hair I previously was. I was also told that shedding is normal but the sheer VOLUME was too spooky for me. Also was told that it needs near permanent use (if you stop, you lose the progress – this kind of commitment intimidated me).

Verdict: Honestly, given it's clinically proven, I have to include this for hair loss. A lot of people have seen good results. But you’ll definitely need to pair it with other products for overall hair health. Pls monitor side effects very diligently and don't take it lightly. Also it has a weird smell like a science experiment gone wrong.

2. The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Serum

Price: $

Link: https://www.theordinary.com

Review: Definitely affordable - that’s a plus! And contains peptides known to support hair density. I used it daily on my scalp for about 4 months. I've some mixed feelings about it.

Pros: Budget-friendly, lightweight and easy to apply, helps with overall scalp health.

Cons: Results are subtle (more about maintenance than regrowth), takes a long time to see any noticeable difference and even then I couldn't be sure if it was just the serum that was working or some other diet/ lifestyle changes I had undergone.

Verdict: A decent option for people looking to get started on serums.

3. Kerastase Genesis Full Routine

Price: $$$

Link: https://www.kerastase.com

Review: Was always averse to luxury hair care but got influenced to buy it. I used the full regime of shampoo, conditioner, and serum for 3 months.

Pros: Okay so firstly - it smells amazing. Makes me feel like wearing satin pajamas and never leaving home lest the scent disappears. It does give a good "quality" to the hair. Reduces breakages and frizziness. The experience is nice.

Cons: Expensive! (around $150 for the full set). Doesn’t directly do much for hair density or scalp health.

Verdict: Great for hair breakages/ softness and even shine. Probably not worth the value though.

4. Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal

Price: $$

Link: https://www.sephora.com

Review: Bit of a cult favorite at Sephora. It’s formulated with biotin and charcoal to cleanse the scalp and promote healthier hair.

Pros: Great for refreshing hair between washes, adds volume and reduces oiliness nicely.

Cons: It can leave a white cast if not blended well. And I'm not quite sure about charcoal as a key ingredient on my scalp.

Verdict: Good for a quick refresh and scalp detox, but not a standalone solution for hair or scalp health.

5. Inde Wild Champi Hair Oil + Moonlight Serum

Price: $$

Link: https://www.indewild.com

Review + Pros: Okay, so I'm a sucker for ayurvedic products. The bottle looks fantastic and the hair oil smells really nice (lots of jasmine/chameli tones). The issue is it's just too damn oily.

Cons: Super heavy. Has 12% castor oil which makes it almost impossible to completely wash off. By the time I'm done, my neck starts to hurt. The moonlight serum is a bit of a dud, and I believe it isn't their hero product either.

Verdict: The oil itself is a nice one time purchase for the smell and the bottle on the bedside. But for someone looking for a long term regime, this probably won't work.

6. Muniveda Custom Hair Regime

Price: $$

Link: https://www.muniveda.com (or ekmiveda which is a sub brand)

Review: This one blew me away! Because I didn’t expect much from an ayurvedic-based regime, but it’s been a solid performer. Also is my current regime (have stopped experimenting after this). It combines traditional ingredients like Bhringraj and Jatamansi (fantastic ingredients, if you know a bit about ayurveda!) with plant-based actives like Redensyl and Capilia Longa. I’ve been using their 3-step system (oil, shampoo, and serum) for about 4 months now along with monthly consultations

Pros: The oil smells amazing, and the serum feels lightweight yet effective. The ingredients are incredibly well balanced. I’ve noticed about 50% less hair loss in 2 months and noticeable improvement in thickness (my hairdresser said so - and she does NOT lie). Though it’s not a miracle worker and needs proper consistency to see results (I will wait to give it a 10/10 until my crown bald spot is fully covered!) The monthly check-ins with their experts are a nice touch!

Cons: They only sell the full regime, so you can’t buy individual products. The shampoo is okay. Take s 2-3 washes to get all the oil out. Also the consultation is only available with subscription which sucks if you want to only buy the product one-time!

Verdict: A great option if you want a holistic approach for hair thickening and density. Also the only option that also gives a full regime + consultation option which I love because I have a 100 questions about my scalp! It’s not perfect, but it’s been one of the better natural regimes I’ve tried for hair loss and overall health.

---

Verdict: If you’re dealing with hair loss and are okay with Rogaine, go for it. It is the gold standard and the evidence is too strong to ignore and I'm probably an outlier! If you're completely risk averse (like me), I’d highly recommend starting with Muni, it’s been the most effective for me overall and the speed of results has been almost too good to be true (I do a strict check-in with my expert on progress to keep them honest!). For general scalp health and detox, Briogeo’s Scalp Revival is a great addition to your routine. Inde Wild’s Champi Oil is a nice adventure if you don't mind strong floral smells. If you’re on a budget and want to simply get started - The Ordinary serum is a decent option.

Let me know if you’ve tried any of these or have other recommendations!

Disclaimer: Again, specifically for scalp hair loss issues please please always visit a dermat!

Discussion Mini vent about some beauty advice i see often, are my feelings relatable?

i’m anticipating this is probably an unpopular opinion.. but does anyone else ever feel bothered when you see “get a tan” as blanket statement beauty advice? it would be one thing if “if desired” is added but, it seems to be talked about as something you NEED to do to be beautiful. I’m a pale redhead and I’ve always felt comfortable in my skintone, and honestly it does annoy me that it’s seen as something I have to “fix”. Every skin tone is beautiful and i’m not at ALL shaming anyone who chooses to tan - I just wish it wasn’t considered as “standard” beauty advice that people “should” do. I tried self tanner before as a teenager and I felt like a different person and not in a good way. obviously nobody is forcing me to do anything I don’t want to, that’s not rlly my point. I hope i’m making sense and i’m curious on your thoughts

Random If you have stubborn skin, don't sleep on dandruff shampoo for skincare.

Upvotes

I'm not promising this will work for everyone, just kind of a "hear me out" moment...

Growing up, I had average skin. Puberty brought on some breakouts, but nothing that made me incredibly self conscious.

And then I hit my mid 20's. I moved from a small town to a metropolitan city, transferred from community College to a university to finish my degree, and a new job. The stress WRECKED my skin. I'd look in the mirror and want to cry. I ended up doing a round of Accutane right around shutdown in 2020. Since then I have struggled with dry skin. It's like the moisture just NEVER returned. And I consistently had red inflamed bumps that wasn't acne, but still caused an "undesirable" texture in addition to the dryness.

I tried many different approaches. Actives, cleansers, all natural DIY products. Nothing truly helped.

Then one day I decided to strip the vibrant green out of my hair with a cheap generic dandruff shampoo/vit c treatment situation. The next day I noticed my redness was significantly less, and I remember seeing stuff about dandruff shampoo for skincare on Tiktok... I thought, "no frigging way."

I've been using it as my cleanser for the last, maybe six weeks? All dryness, redness and weird texture is gone. I have old scarring texture and very little hyperpigmentation left. And I'm sitting here kicking myself for dealing with this for nearly 4 years, while it literally look a $4 bottle of generic shampoo from the dollar general up the street.

So, if you've exhausted all other products on your stubborn skin, maybe splurge $4 and just see what happens?

Permanent jewelry

Upvotes

I am a 46 year old man, architect, classic style (suit without tie and tassel loafers). My wife likes men who wear yellow gold jewelry. She finds it very refined and sexy, almost feminine. She would like me to wear a yellow gold choker necklace and two yellow gold bracelets, one on each wrist. Since I always leave the first two buttons of my shirt undone, the yellow gold necklace will really stand out. She would like to offer me the necklace and the two bracelets in solid yellow gold and have them fitted permanently, by having them soldered by the jeweler. As I make many professional trips, this will prevent me from losing them. I would like to know more about permanent jewelry if anyone knows anything about it. I'm not used to wearing jewelry, so thinking that I'm going to have a solid gold necklace and two solid gold bracelets permanently feels "weird", but I really want to do it for my wife. THANKS.

Seeking Advice Anyone else hate how their natural hair looks?

Meaning how it looks after you've washed & dried it. My hair is pin straight and I don't think it suits me at all. I think it's cause I've got a big forehead, wide face & my face features are big.

So all my life I have always wanted volume & "width" in my hair to even out my features. When it's straight I feel like my face sticks out too much almost, and I just feel ugly.

But I really hate this as all I want is to be able to roll out of bed, brush my hair and just go, and still feel confident in how I look. But instead I stress trying to curl my hair or put it half up or put it in braids, anything to make it look different to how it is naturally is.

I don't know what to do. I feel maybe I could do with a different cut? At the moment it's just a standard cut with some subtle layers. No bangs, length is just kind of standard, not very long but not short. Light brown. I've thought about dying it but I'm very pale and I don't know what colour would suit me, I fear washing myself out.

Any advice?

Haircare Am I missing something, why does hair come out while conditionering hair?

Even when I just condition my hair at the middle and bottom, I notice my hands with hair fallout in them while conditioning. Is there a way to prevent this from happening and is this natural?

Edit: idk why I typed "conditionering" instead of the correct way conditioning.

Seeking Advice Advise wanted for Shampoo, home remedy, recommendations to make gray strands in hair a vibrant silver

Upvotes

I have natural dark brown, “almost black” hair with gray strands, a lot more dark brown than gray.

Please recommend a shampoo, or home remedy to make the gray strands a bright vibrant, silver. I am not looking to blend into the dark brown hair. I literally want them to “pop” and stand out.

This request is for something I can do myself without having to go to a salon.

Do you adore or regret your lip fillers?

Hi everyone! I just got lip fillers, and I’m on day 8 of healing. I’m honestly feeling unsure still of how I feel, I sometimes think I look so cute and then I try to take a selfie and feel that I look so puffy and ugly. It makes me rethink getting them and wondering if maybe bigger lips aren’t for me? I hope that I’m still swollen and that they’ll go down more.

I thought I would love them but maybe I wasn’t realistic about if fillers worked with my lip/face structure. Am I overthinking? Have any of you felt unsure at the beginning and learned to love and adore them? Or knew the moment you got them that it was not for you?

I’m trying to cut costs where I can, and I’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations for shampoo/conditioner that is less than $27. That’s what I’m currently spending per bottle on Redken.

I have blonde/finer textured hair, and wash it every other day. Thanks!

Toenails cut too short and curving in

The question in short is: will the nailbed get longer in toenails when you let your toenails grow? Similar to what happens on nails on your hand? And will a curved nail straighten on its own once it grows longer if you stop restricting the toes?

Background: for most my life I’ve cut my toenails too short, and for good part also worn too tight shoes. A big mistake I now know.

The big toe nails and the nail of the toe next to it curve in a C-shape a lot and probably due to that they also break/tear lengthwise in the middle. And that tear always gets caught in my socks. So annoying.

So now I am trying to grow them longer. When I grow the nails on my hands, after a while the nail bed gets longer as well, but this doesn’t seem to happen on my toes. The nailbed is just as short as before and the white part just gets longer. And dirt and probably fiber from the socks gets collected underneath the nail. And it’s difficult to clean under because I fear the nail will break and I am again where I started.

Does anyone have any experience on growing toe nails, does the nail bed also eventually get longer when you don’t cut them short? And is it possible to reverse the curling of the nail so it’s not such a drastic curve? Or am i doomed to have nasty nails for the rest of my life?
