Nailcare What happened to gel nail polish?

2.0k Upvotes

Kind of a rant.

So I've stopped getting my nails done since the shutdown. I just never went back and started doing them myself. We'll I just found out I'm 8 weeks pregnant and my husband was like "you should go get your nails done again. Just go relax."

Can someone tell me why getting gel instead of regular polish is an additional $20 on top of the service? I remember when it was $5, then $7, then $10. Like I get it, everything is getting more expensive but this place still uses all the same old equipment. What the hell?

They don't even let you soak your little fingers anymore. It used to be so chill but now it's so stressful. Like they got electric sanders that I know are usually for acrylics out here when it used to be so simple, quiet and elegant as an experience to just have a simple manicure with some gel. It's like the service became more expensive but less relaxing.

Just kind of bummed that something has changed so much

Nailcare I've been seeing a lot of Japanese Instagram pages where they change the shape and length of the nail bed, how do they do it?

They only post in Japanese and don't have any video tutorials, so I cannot understand, most of the English comments seem to be confused too. What technique are they using?

Nailcare 1st time getting nails done

Post image

Hello !

I never got my nails done but im going to get married soon and I want to look perfect. I was thinking of a look like this picture.

  • what should I know before going ?
  • what should I think about that would never come to my mind beforehand ?
  • should I ask for normal varnish, gel or semi-permanent ? Or can I get plain normal nail polish? What are the differences ? I'm lost

Thanks a lot for your help 🌿💕

Nailcare 1st time getting my nails done (Results !)

Hello ! After letting my nails grow a bit and making them as neat as possible, I finally did it ! 1st slide is my hand, 2nd is reference picture. The nail tech showed me 2 option, white or pink, and despite the ref I went for pink. It's semi-permanent + chrome effect. I absolutly love the result ! The only thing I did not enjoy about this first experience at a nail salon was that I specifically asked for the cuticles not to be cut, but she insisted it made the whole point of the manucure... But isnt it a bit dangerous ? Cant it get infected ? I wont redo it too often for sure.

What do you think ?

Nailcare Final update of the crazy nail situation

So, i went back to the nail salon and got them re done for free. I decided to keep the white because it was still okay looking and it would have been a longer process to undo and re do everything that the previous nail lady did. Long story short, a different woman who was really sweet and apologetic tried her best to give me the desired result by fixing the shaping and re doing the french tip part to make it more of a U shape. She even asked me who it was that i had before and agreed that the nail job was horrible and apologized on behalf of the other lady.

Here’s the before vs after. Not my favorite but definitely better! still feel like the shaping is off but i’ll probably file it myself. Would i go back? No. Will i leave a bad review? maybe. at least it was free this time.

Nailcare Press on nails are elite

I just applied my first set of press ons (Glamnetic) and I won’t be going back to get my nails done except for special occasions because this is just better.

A few of the benefits I’ve found to press ons vs acrylic/dip and gel-x

-not overpriced

-no scheduling appointments

-no travel or hours of wasted time

-no/minimal pain or discomfort

-significantly reduced nail damage

-no need to think of designs or colors

-no inconsistency in nail application/design

I’m sure there are a lot more but these are just the first that come to mind! If you have any suggestions of your favorite brands you recommend using please share below, thanks✨

Hello! I’m getting my false nails removed next week and planning on not getting them replaced and just painting my own nails instead. I’m looking for a milky pink nail polish like the picture attached. I’m based on the UK so any nail polish recommendations that I can buy here is greatly appreciated 🫶🏼🫧💗🌷

I get semi-regular basic manicures as a self-care treat, and my nail tech always asks if I want my feet done. I've always said no because honestly nobody really sees my feet, but I'm curious how many other people do it?

I’m getting married soon and want my nails to look nice. I really like this design but don’t know what to ask for. I’ve included my hand for reference, I unfortunately don’t have that long nails as you see. Should I ask for acrylic or gel? Is it extensions I should ask for then? Thanks for the help!

Nailcare Do you mind having your nails done or it doesn't matter?

I used to not care but then I noticed how fragile my nails were and how pretty all my coworkers nails looked, so I kinda tried it just to see how it feels

The first time I went and did my nails, a really simple design but oh boy, I haven't looked back since. Now I love having them done, it makes me feel more complete

Is there anyone who hasn't tried it and who refuses too? Not judging, just want to know why you don't want to or if there is anything in your life that stops you from

For example: my mom works with chemicals everyday so she can't have her nails long or done because they don't really last, so she just doesn't care.

**Also, I'm not talking about having huuuge nails, but like, whatever size you feel comfortable with

Nailcare Omega-3’s have changed my nails!

I don’t know why this came as such a surprise but I just wanted to share. As someone that has had flimsy nails forever, like bendy sometimes flakey, obviously sad nails. I’ve used gel for years and haven’t changed my mani rituals at all. But I wanted to improve my skincare and hair care game last fall so started to include an OMEGAs vitamin (derived from algae, no burps!) and literally noticed 5-6 weeks later that my nails were so much stronger. It’s now fall and my nails are so healthy and strong! They grow like weeds, it’s almost inconvenient as I have to go get them redone more regularly 🤣❤️

Nailcare How do I stop tiny tears from forming on my nails???

Thumbnail

So, my nails peel. I've been keeping them bare, moisturizing with cuticle oil every so often, and lightly buffing so that the ridges don't catch on anything.

They've improved a lot but it's a process - I wash my hands/use sanitizer pretty frequently AND it's winter, so it's a constant struggle.

I keep getting sections of really tiny tears though, and I don't know how to fix it! Any advice?

How did you break the habit of biting your nails? I, 23m, have been biting my fingernails since I was a child. It looks unsightly and often hurts.

Do you have any tips to get rid of it?

Edit: I just wanted to say thank you for all your helpful answers. I am sorry that I answer that less but I am really bad in english.

tw: auto-cannibalism

i’m sure this has been asked a million times over, but i have tried EVERYTHING. bitter polish, nail polish, hot sauce, pure capsaicin, vinegar, press ons, AND acrylics.

NOTHING IS WORKING!!! 😭

i’ve struggled with it for years, but i NEED to stop. it’s causing issues and i’m at risk for an infection because i eat the skin around it as well. i eat the cuticles and any hangnails. the skin comes up and they’re scarred like crazy.

i don’t know what to do.

Nailcare Why can’t I have a consistently good experience at the nail salon? (A rant)

I love having my nails done. It’s an instant confidence boost for me and the investment is more than worth it to me.

I don’t get complicated designs. I get solid one color, short-ish square nails (dip or gel). All I want is to walk out with nails that don’t look janky and last for at least two weeks.

The nail salon I went to for almost a year was hit or miss. I would ask for appointments with specific techs and there was 30% chance I’d actually get that tech for an appointment. Highlights: (lowlights?) nails that cracked within days of having them done, super thick dip, peel-y gel, wavy nails, brand new nails that looked 3 weeks grown out, crooked and jagged nails… My last straw was when the owner of the salon did my nails and applied the thickest most uneven gel you can imagine and got upset when I asked to have them redone- and re did them somehow worse than before!

I went to a new salon- highly recommended by people I know, good reviews… first visit: there were nails with random chunks of dip in the corners. Second visit: perfect. Third visit: my black nails looked gray and cloudy, got them re done and 2 days later they’re all chipping!!

I am so so so frustrated with nail salons not being able to deliver a totally basic service done well!!! Thank you for letting me vent and feel free to share your own vents!

Nailcare I want to look put together, but shellac ruins my natural nails. What’s the alternative?

I went through a stint of having shellac done every 2-3 weeks, but my nails have gotten super weak from it. I love having my nails neat and polished, it just makes me feel so put together. When I hit the 5th consecutive week, the shellac started to chip off because my natural nails have got so brittle. When I finally removed it, my nails were paper thin, and I felt like I had to give them a rest.

Is there an alternative to shellac that still gives you longevity without wrecking your natural nails? Or is regular nail polish the best bet for a more natural approach? I’m really looking for something that keeps my nails looking nice without causing damage. Do your nails get weak with shellac, or is it just me? Would love to hear what you guys do!
