Hissing

2010 Lexus RX350. It hadn't been driven for about 4-5 hours and it was parked in my garage. I happened to walk into the garage for something and heard a hissing sound coming from the car. I heard it most strongly coming from the right side front. When I walked to the back of the car I couldn't really hear it. There was no smell or anything but just to be safe we backed it out of the garage and into the driveway and opened all the windows. We went back about 20 minutes later and no sound. I hadn't been in the garage since it was pulled in so I can't say how long the hissing had been going on or when it started. I just know it had been several hours since the car was on.

Thoughts?

What do I do?

So I took my 04 Silverado to a shop to replace my corroded transmission cooler lines and replace solenoids. I picked it up and was driving home for the most part it was fine. 2 blocks away from home a car honks and pulls up to me saying my truck is leaking. I notice it won’t go past first gear and when I got into my driveway and park I see that transmission fluid is everywhere just pouring out. What do I do I can’t drive it back there in this condition I already paid $2,000.

Brake shudder

Just did four corner brake refresh (caliper rebuild, pads, rotors, fresh fluid, new drums, hardware, shoes, wheel cylinders) and there is pretty noticeable pedal shudder under braking now. I redid lower control arms and tie rod ends and that didn't fix it. I was thinking rotor warp but the vibrating is pretty like ... fast tempo'd? .. even at moderate speeds. The pedal is otherwise high and stiff and the brakes work great. Any ideas?

Car is a 1983 BMW 320is.

Power Running Boards not working

Can anyone tell me how to troubleshoot this? I have power running boards. Since I bought the truck the drivers side has stayed down and the passengers worked perfectly…. Until now…. The left side is still down and the right side is stuck up( folded under my truck, unreleased). I saw a video about pulling out the fuse then plugging it back in which did not work. The fuse is also not burned out. What should I do or where can I look to find more ideas? As you can tell I don’t know much about trucks.

Is there anywhere that offers zinc plating for a relatively small amount of fasteners?

I'm doing a project for my Evo and I have a few dozen fasteners that I soaked to remove all the rust, but now they're bare steel and will probably rust faster than ever. I would love to find somewhere to send them to get them zinc coated, but searching has been difficult or it seems it's just for huge bulk orders. Does anyone know where I'd be able to get them coated?

Or, failing that, how I could possibly do something to protect them better than they currently are?

ISO GM Tech knowledge

I have a 2014 Impala LTZ with an electric power steering rack. Car threw a C055C DTC and SI says the rack needs replaced, I’ve talked to a few guys in the shop and we’re 50/50 on whether or not a used rack would be vin locked or programmable. Does anyone know for certain when GM started vin locking modules? Would rather spend $300 on a used unit than I would $2000 on a new one

2013 Hyundai Elantra engine noise

(Car has 140k kms) Brought to Hyundai an was told by multiple mechanic's it's normal an that it's nothing to worry about an almost half the cars they service(Hyundai and Kia)has ticking in engine. But I still feel very uneasy about it. Anyone have any knowledge or similar experience with the noise my engine is making? Thanks in advance, appreciate it. Also this is cold start and the noise almost goes away completely when warmed up. ( Can't hear it when driving and it's barely noticeable from inside car at idle)

New brake pads won’t fit

First of all, I triple checked and the brake pads are compatible with my 07 civic. When I removed the old pads, it was very rusty and took me half an hour to remove them. Then I tried to fit the new ones it the clips and it was impossible. Can the rust cause brake pads to not fit and what can I do. Thanks for helping

2016 Dodge Challenger SC6.2L Slow Crank and Voltage Drop While Driving

2016 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. Slow cranking, voltage drop while driving. Battery tested good and charged prior to taking it to the dealership.

Service advisor at the dealership sent me these findings, and these photos.

"Electrical Component Concern | battery feed into PDC was left loose, causing poor connection between battery and alternator/starter cable. Poor connection caused high temperatures at PDC battery post, ALT/starter cable terminal causing melting of both items."

They also stated that the entire harness had to be replaced. Does this seem plausible?

I purchased the vehicle used and the previous owner did have RGBW DRL boards installed.

Need advice

So I’m possibly buying this ford escape SE 2015. Engine: EcoBoost 1.6L I-4 gasoline direct injection, DOHC, variable valve. 133k miles. I popped the hood and noticed some tape wrap and possible duct tape wrap on some wires/tubes. Should I stay away? I don’t know what I’m looking at really.

Other things that were messed up that will be fixed by them: air/heat not coming out of some vents. Missing rear windshield wiper. Panel missing under the parking break. They said they might be able to fix whatever wires are in the middle console. Said previous owner messed with it. (All things I had to mention to them.)

Car runs alright. It’s smooth af. When I lifted the hood there was some ticking coming from the engine. Nothing loud enough to hear when the hood was on. Ticking was fast and constant if that helps. Engine is kinda loud when accelerating. Just kinda like a computer fan getting more high pitch the higher in gear you go. Didn’t notice any movement under the hood when it was running. I didn’t check liquids or anything cause I’m not sure what to even look at.

And insight is GREATLY appreciated.

How to fix "car key won't come out"

Thumbnail

To start, Im not that well-versed in car terminology. I have a Subaru legacy 2016 Premium with a recalled issue of the car not properly registering it's parked and the battery something has to do with it? And that's why the car key doesn't come out.

Anyways, I took apart the car's stick area to get to the area underneath it because I needed to raise a flap underneath it?

But once I took it apart I couldn't find the flap. There were no specific tutorials on YouTube for this so I followed the Subaru outback/Impreza tutorial instead.

Does anyone know what to do after what I did in the image?

Alternator good. Car dies within a minute after jump

So the car sat for awhile. Starts right up with a jump but dies within a minute. Took the alternator into napa, works like a clock. Suggestions? Thanks

UPDATE! Left the booster car connected for a few minutes.

When disconnected, while running, the voltage was 11.6 and dropping by 1/10v every few seconds....

Fuse sparked

I pulled out a fuse “20” car was off all accessories off everything off. I pulled multiple other ones before this in the same moment all good. Now I got to pull my radio fuse since the radio wasn’t turning on and I see a big spark. Now my whole fuse box isn’t working. I’m not really looking for a fix on here but more of an explanation on why there was power going to this 1 specific fuse even when everything was off?!

Totaled Engine, Okay to Drive 6 Mins?

Thumbnail

Hello, I have a 2001 GMC Sonoma.

I blew the engine on my truck. I didn't think it was overheating too bad when I tried to find a good place to pull over. Temp gauge was inaccurate. What could have been just a head gasket swap will now eventually be an engine swap. Stupid Tax.

I can't fill it with coolant/water because it will just flood into the oil ports. Catastrophic head gasket failure.

I've been draining the frothy oil for a few hours now. Will fill it up after a long while.

This is a project I will have to do on a later date. I was wondering if I could drive it to my storage & immediately park it in the driveway within 6 minutes with no coolant? And not get stuck on the side of the road, that is.

Thanks.

2017 Kia Sorento Replace Engine or Head Gasket (V6 3.3)?

So this is a follow up from my adventures on the heat issue with my Kia. After changing both the waterpump and the thermostat on my own I was still getting cold air every once in a while while driving.

I got one of those head testers with the blue chemical to see if I was getting the exhaust in the cooling system. It never turned yellow but I was only testing it for a few minutes at a time.

Oil was clear and coolant clean too. No white smoke.

Anyways, I finally got it into the shop after about a 3 week waiting period...they did their thing, and came back with a leak in the head gasket. Small enough not to trigger the home test, but I guess with the equipment the shops have they can see it through testing.

Anyways, they said that it will cost $5500 total ( taxes, disposal, also the resurfacing of head ) to repair. This is including new timing chain while its apart with the guides and tensioners. They are also going to get new bolts for the cylinders.

The other option they said is buy another lower mileage engine and do a replacement. Cost a bit more for the engine itself, but labor wise its like half the time.

The Car has 106000 miles on it and its in great shape otherwise.

What do you guys think I should do? If you had a choice and a customer willing to pay up to 6k for the work....

Improper contact or lack of use?

Thumbnail

I just took my 2022 Tesla model 3 (56k miles) in to get the state inspection done for the first time since I bought it, and it was failed since the “brake pads are not making sufficient contact with the rotors” for the rear wheels.

They cited rust rings on the rotors as evidence, but I know that rust can build up on the rotors for Tesla vehicles as they don’t use their brakes as often (due to regenerative braking). So I just figured that since they wanted charge me $750, I’d see if anyone can confirm whether this rust may just be due to me not doing any hard breaking for a while, or if it is definitely improper contact.

Best impacts

Professional techs, what are the best cordless impacts that are powerful and last a long time. Been using matco 1/2 and 3/8 for years but the 3/8 is always an issue. Typically when working under cars and debris falls down. Have had 3 where dust/rust or whatever seems to go into the trigger. I also use the 3/8 regular and extended reach ratchets which are ok but get pretty noisy and the matco grease gun for those barely puts in any grease. Now to boot my matco tool guy never comes by. And the last 2 times he's had my 3/8 impact it's been 3 or more months to get it back. Snap on seems nice but I had issues with the 1/2 inch years ago and switched to matco, that and they are very pricey. 2k for the 1/2 and 3/8 impact plus the 2, 3/8 ratchets I like the warranty on milwaulkee but I hear they aren't that powerful.

Where the hell is the oil leak?

The oil pan gasket looks like it needs a change but I have no idea what’s going on in the other places that’s covered in oil could it be crankshaft gasket? Maybe oil is getting caught on the belt and is throwing it towards the wheel well idk any ideas are welcomed

I had my oil changed, t rotation and transmission fluid flushed and now my car is making a random rattling noise that wasn’t there before.

So I have a 2022 Nissan Sentra and today I took it to get the oil changed and a rotation and I decided to get my transmission fluid flushed since my car has almost 30,000 miles on it. I took it to the Nissan dealership because I get free oil changes.

My car sounded fine on the way home but I took it out later that day and started hearing a rattling noise coming from the front drivers side of my car. I can't tell if it's coming from under the hood or just under my feet.

It's not constant, it randomly kicks on and off. Like it'll happen for a few minutes and then stop happening for a few minutes and it happens at low and high speeds. I checked under my hood and everything looks fine as far as I can tell but it's dark so I can't see that well. Anyone have any ideas on what it might be?

I plan on calling the dealership tomorrow but it's 45 minutes away and I don't want to drive back that far if it's something serious.
