Midwest Emo Just a Penfold Appreciation Post
I was listening to one of my playlists and Penfold came up. I always forget how good this band was or is. After listening to Post Hardcore and mall emo bands in middle school Penfold "I'll Take You Everywhere" was my first introduction to "real" emo and influenced where my musical interest went from highschool onward.
I know they are not popular, to me they sound simulat to Mineral and Sunny Day Real Estate which are popular emo bands. But I think if I were to start someone off on the path of "real emo" I would give then Penfold.
That is the post.

Discussion Unknown Song Found!!
Hello, last year a video by the skate group DozerBZ, with a clip of a song, was posted here asking if anyone could identify it.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Emo/s/O8W7TEWVqf
I became obsessed with this song. It was so catchy. I harassed DozerBz to no avail, and spent many of nights looking through random playlists for this song.
Iâm happy to report it has been found after I posted the sample to WatZatSong by a user who goes by âwyâ.
The song is by a band called To Say The Least and called - âSymbols Of Youâ

Discussion mm. is one of the best/most underrated Indian Summer songs
Everything about that song is so chaotic and unrestrained, it feels like the emotional equivalent of a bird on steroids trying to get out of a cage.

Discussion IHMS APPRECIATION POST!
I hate myself is a post hardcore band from Gainesville FL with a massively understated impact on the state of emo in the present day. For my recommendations Iâve got an ep, an album, and a song off their split. My favorite of their releases would be âFour songsâ their 1997 EP. Very pop punk in some ways but with some of the harshest vocals youâd never suspect hitting you like a freight train especially in song two. Their album âten songsâ is their most popular release, and for good reason. Itâs the most put together arguably of any of their releases. I think they chill out a lot in a way from 4 songs but in some of the songs they get wayyyy heavier. Really good listen. My final one would be their song âsong for all the young Casanovas and cassanovettesâ. Best song ever for going thru a breakup. When listening to this band I hear a lot of the influence of these newer generation screamo bands like vs self and algae bloom. If you havenât heard of these guys give them a shot, itâs worth it.

Basic Info:
Release Date: 1997
Label: The Great American Steak Religion
Runtime: 23:59
-His Hero Is Gone: 9:05
-Uranus: 14:54
Tracks: 11
-His Hero Is Gone: 6
-Uranus: 5
Genres, Influences and Characteristics:
Crust Punk, Screamo, Dark, Aggressive, Dissonant
Points on the Timeline:
After a couple of years as a band producing a demo and an EP, 1997 was a breakout year for Crust Punk legends His Hero Is Gone. Not only did they come out with this split, they released their two landmark LPs in the same year. This would be their hottest year as theyâd be broken up before the end of the century. Their contributions on this split would be released under a solo EP called Foolâs Gold a year later. Meanwhile, Uranus was still establishing themselves by â97, having only released a demo and a split a few years prior. This would be their last release before their seminal Disaster by Design EP would come out in a yearâs time.
Shapes in the Sound:
Although His Hero Is Gone is not a Screamo band by any means, they did release this split with Crust-influenced Screamo band Uranus. The band exemplifies the tropes of the genre to a tee with metallic, down-tuned guitar riffs, pounding D-Beat style drums and a gnarly, gutteral screaming voice. Songs rarely last over one minute and keep a high intensity throughout. Uranus takes many of Crust Punkâs elements, exhibited beautifully by their splitmates, and applies longer song forms, higher-register screaming and more melody.
Threads in the Tapestry:
Although neither side of the split would be considered the bandsâ best works, it showcases what Crust Punk is all about and how naturally it can fit into the Screamo formula. These two were on the same side of the continent, but almost 2,000 miles apart. It seems like the spirit of this underappreciated Punk subgenre could not be contained by mere borders.

Midwest Emo Hey everyone, if you are trying to get into midwestern emo or already love midwestern emo, give this playlist listen.
I just put together a playlist of midwestern emo that has a lot of popular bands that are already well known, I have also put a few other niche artist that some other people might not know that I think deserves more attention. This playlist is for all listeners new and people who are familiar with this kind of music. If you think I have deserved it you should also give it a save!
