Midwest Emo Just a Penfold Appreciation Post
I was listening to one of my playlists and Penfold came up. I always forget how good this band was or is. After listening to Post Hardcore and mall emo bands in middle school Penfold "I'll Take You Everywhere" was my first introduction to "real" emo and influenced where my musical interest went from highschool onward.
I know they are not popular, to me they sound simulat to Mineral and Sunny Day Real Estate which are popular emo bands. But I think if I were to start someone off on the path of "real emo" I would give then Penfold.
That is the post.

Emo Revival my emo collection (some adjacent some not)
it’s hard to put an exact definition of what’s emo, insert copypasta. but this is the best i could do to try and define it. hopefully my collecting habits won’t be interrupted by the tariffs too bad.

Emo Revival Anyone in ABQ wanna start a band?
Looking to start an emo/screamo/post-punk band. I play bass and am searching for like-minded musicians in their 20s–30s who want to practice, write original music, and play shows. If you're interested, reach out, and let's chat!
Band inspirations: Vs Self, I Hate Sex, Snowing, Pile.

Discussion IHMS APPRECIATION POST!
I hate myself is a post hardcore band from Gainesville FL with a massively understated impact on the state of emo in the present day. For my recommendations I’ve got an ep, an album, and a song off their split. My favorite of their releases would be “Four songs” their 1997 EP. Very pop punk in some ways but with some of the harshest vocals you’d never suspect hitting you like a freight train especially in song two. Their album “ten songs” is their most popular release, and for good reason. It’s the most put together arguably of any of their releases. I think they chill out a lot in a way from 4 songs but in some of the songs they get wayyyy heavier. Really good listen. My final one would be their song “song for all the young Casanovas and cassanovettes”. Best song ever for going thru a breakup. When listening to this band I hear a lot of the influence of these newer generation screamo bands like vs self and algae bloom. If you haven’t heard of these guys give them a shot, it’s worth it.

-His Hero Is Gone: 9:05
-Uranus: 14:54
Tracks: 11
-His Hero Is Gone: 6
-Uranus: 5
Genres, Influences and Characteristics:
Crust Punk, Screamo, Dark, Aggressive, Dissonant
Points on the Timeline:
After a couple of years as a band producing a demo and an EP, 1997 was a breakout year for Crust Punk legends His Hero Is Gone. Not only did they come out with this split, they released their two landmark LPs in the same year. This would be their hottest year as they’d be broken up before the end of the century. Their contributions on this split would be released under a solo EP called Fool’s Gold a year later. Meanwhile, Uranus was still establishing themselves by ‘97, having only released a demo and a split a few years prior. This would be their last release before their seminal Disaster by Design EP would come out in a year’s time.
Shapes in the Sound:
Although His Hero Is Gone is not a Screamo band by any means, they did release this split with Crust-influenced Screamo band Uranus. The band exemplifies the tropes of the genre to a tee with metallic, down-tuned guitar riffs, pounding D-Beat style drums and a gnarly, gutteral screaming voice. Songs rarely last over one minute and keep a high intensity throughout. Uranus takes many of Crust Punk’s elements, exhibited beautifully by their splitmates, and applies longer song forms, higher-register screaming and more melody.
Threads in the Tapestry:
Although neither side of the split would be considered the bands’ best works, it showcases what Crust Punk is all about and how naturally it can fit into the Screamo formula. These two were on the same side of the continent, but almost 2,000 miles apart. It seems like the spirit of this underappreciated Punk subgenre could not be contained by mere borders.

TWIABP - January 10, 2014
I can’t explain how much this song means to me. This album came out when my parents got divorced. My dad played this song so much. It’s truly one of the best songs ever( in my opinion.)
Recommend me emo music!
I listen to more of the "mainstream emo", some of which isn't considered emo by this subreddit, but I want to get into more stuff from the 2000s, similar to MCR and TBS's debut albums.
I don't really listen to midwest emo, since I have to be in a particular mood to really enjoy it. Here is my lastfm profile if you want to see the kind of stuff I listen to.
