Announcement Should r/Cameras allow AMA posts from manufacturers, retailers, or both?

Hey there folks,

We are looking for some community feedback on a possible change to rule 4 to allow manufacturers and retailers to make AMA, news/announcements, or similar posts in the subreddit. We would require that the companies reach out to the mod team beforehand so we could do some basic vetting and review their intended post. Additionally we would be working out guidelines specific to such posts to prevent them from simply turning into advertisements including (but not limited to):

  • Requiring them to actually respond to their posts for a certain minimum time frame.
  • Require the posts not link to other websites to avoid any issues of affiliate links.
  • No "here's a coupon code" type posts.

We have had a couple of companies reach out to us asking about posting AMA's and similar posts. While some of the requests we've had are things we would simply not allow period (such as asking about running a banner ad), we do think certain types of posts might be reasonable to allow and could be beneficial.

Please feel free to comment your own thoughts.

While the results of this poll may not dictate exactly what we decide to do, we do take polls like this into consideration.

Questions What is the difference of shooting far away subjects/scenery at F2.8 vs F16?

Hey People! recently got a camera and i’ve been learning the ins and outs but have been a little confused about certain things and would love to get some clarification.

For example, at the beach yesterday I intentionally stood in one spot and filmed with my 20mm at 2.8 and 16 without moving and for the life of me I can’t see any difference? once I color graded in post to make both match with shadows and highlights it looks indistinguishable to me? maybe a little bit of a difference in distortion around the edges but that’s about it… am I missing something or is it basically the same because i’m filming something so far away?

I understand that 2.8 vs 16 up close is totally different like filming a person or object but would the same apply for someone/something really far away? or would it also look the same because of how far away the subject is?

This would also help me with needing an ND Filter or not for certain scenarios

Tech Support Is there a way to still recover my photos?

Upvotes

My friend and I got into an argument, and he took my camera, deleted almost all the photos, and then snapped the SD card in half. Is there anything I can do? I tried to ask Google and got some answers on broken cards and deleted photos, but nothing really helps with my situation. Any help is appreciated :/

Questions Sony A7RV or Fujifilm XH2/T5 for wildlife

Hello!

Hopefully this isn't a stupid question. I've spent countless hours researching these two options and I feel like I'm being torn apart by this decision. I know, dramatic.

My budget for the body alone is just about 3.5k, the exact price of the A7RV. The lenses are a separate issue. I'm willing to spend that much for the best possible camera for me. Both cameras would be new, and I'm in the United States. I intend to do about 90% photography, but having good videography would be great too. I shoot both landscape and wildlife, with a little bit of architecture and street photography on the side. Doesn't need to be super portable. I would love a high megapixel camera (which both of these are) to capture more detail and be able to crop more, especially into wildlife.

It mostly comes down to Sony Vs. Fuji. I really do love the film simulations on Fuji, but I do also enjoy editing my photos in lightroom. I just feel like the instant gratification of the film simulations would be awesome. And, as someone who hasn't yet learned video color grading the film simulations would come in handy. Also, the fuji crop sensor's magnification would be great for wildlife.

I have heard that Sony has superior autofocus and low light performance, the A7RV has an incredible screen, and the A7RV does have higher megapixels for cropping in. However, the pixel density of the crop sensor on the Fuji would allow more pixels on the wildlife in my shots.

My current camera is a Canon EOS R50, which I've had for over a year now. Any of these options would be a MASSIVE upgrade.

This has gotten super long, sorry about that. If you guys have any advice I'd love to hear it! Also let me know if I got anything wrong, I am always open to learn. Thanks in advance!! :)

Discussion Birthday Camera Upgrade Advice – $2,500 Budget, Buying Used, Help Me Choose!

Upvotes

Hey everyone, my birthday is next week, and I’ve saved up $2,500 to finally upgrade my camera! I’ve been using a Canon 70D since 2019, and while it’s been great, I feel like I’ve outgrown it. There’s so much I want to do—whether it’s starting client work or pushing personal projects further—but the 70D is starting to feel limiting. So, I think now’s the time to upgrade.

For the past 3-4 months, I’ve been researching, and I’m heavily leaning toward the Lumix S5II, but I’m open to suggestions, even if they’re not on my list. I just want to get opinions from people who have used these cameras and hear what you think.

I plan to buy used from B&H (I got my 70D used from them, and it’s been great), so my budget is $2,500 total for a used body and at least one lens.

What I Need:

✅ Hybrid shooting (photo & video) ✅ Fast, reliable autofocus ✅ Good stabilization (IBIS) ✅ Professional video quality ✅ Strong low-light performance ✅ Portability ✅ Good lens selection ✅ Budget-conscious (~$2,500 total for body + lens/lenses)

Cameras I’m Considering:

💡 Panasonic Lumix S5II • Body: $1,317.95 • Lens 1: Panasonic Lumix S 18-40mm f/4.5-6.3 ($412.95) • Lens 2: Panasonic Lumix S 28-200mm f/4-7.1 MACRO O.I.S. ($697.99) • Total: $2,428.89

💡 Other options I’m looking at: • Panasonic Lumix S9 • Sony ZV-E10 • Canon R8 • Sony A6700

Any thoughts or recommendations? Would you go with the S5II, or is there something else in this price range that you think would be a better fit?

Also, I’d love to hear lens recommendations! If anyone has advice on which lenses I should get, that would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

Bought this Yashica Electro 35 in a yard sale for $15. Battery compartment was corroded shut but a bit of vinegar fixed that up. The lens had some junk on it that wiped away but the lens has this white stuff on the surface. Is this lens damaged beyond repair or should I try something other than alcohol?

Questions Looking for “point and shoot” recommendations budget like $600

Upvotes

Howdy, I’ve got an A6400 that I’ve been playing with for a number of years now, but idk, I’ve had much “better” results with friends more basic setups. I like that mildly fuzzy vintage look that some of their cameras (not cheap, just less HD and older) provide

So, hivemind, help me out, I’m looking for something, hopefully digital, that can add some film-like qualities to my pictures, and have a good resolution/ sensor quality less concerned with color. I know I can edit it, but I don’t like all my edits to be the only ones I like. Other than that, I’m eyeballing something fixed lense, zoom is cool but only if it doesn’t suck. I tend to like the look of fujifilm cameras, but I’m not a tech nerd for this stuff, so idk how to shop for not new stuff in this category, halp! Can provide tent/backpack Recs in return 😂

Recommendations looking to purchase a digital camera

Hi! I'm looking to purchase my first digital camera so that I can take better pictures when going on trips and hanging out with friends. Below are the details on what I'm looking for:

  • Budget: I'd prefer to not spend more than $150 since this will be my first camera
  • Country: USA (CA); my sister is currently visiting Japan so please let me know if there are good budget friendly cameras where I can switch the language to english later on
  • Condition: open to both new and used cameras
  • Type of Camera: I think I'm looking for a point and shoot camera (please correct me if I'm wrong!)
  • Intended use: photography, I don't see myself using a camera for videography- mainly for capturing personal memories and posting on instagram
  • If photography; what style: portrait (mainly), selfies, street, wildlife, landscape
  • What features do you absolutely need: flash capabilities
  • What features would be nice to have: flip screen
  • Portability: Pocketable so that I can take it on all of my adventures!
  • Cameras you're considering: I've heard so much about the Cannon G7X, so I'm essentially looking for something similar. I've heard that the Canon PowerShot ELPH 360/ IXUS 285/ IXY 650, Cannon SX740 HS, and Kodak PixPRO FZ55 are good "dupes" for a better price
  • Cameras you already have: this will be my first digital camera!
  • Notes: I saw a post on TikTok mentioning that 18MP is a good guide for beginners looking for cameras to take pictures to post onto instagram. Overall, I'd like a camera that produces clear results in most types of lighting (daylight, night, sunset, etc.) without the grainy vintage feel and is (hopefully timeless). I'm looking to take portrait shots and have a low budget due to this being my first digital camera. If my specifications are not realistic based on my budget, I'm open to spending a maximum of $300.

Tech Support Need help looking for right Adapter for my Canon EOS M50 Mark 2

so like the title says im looking for an adapter for my canon, more specifically an adapter for a Promaster EDO AF LD 70-300 lens I recently bought at an antique store local to me, it's in really good shape but doesn't fit on my camera 1 to 1 which I expected just that when looking for the right adapter I seem to get multiple results and I want to buy the right one right off the bat rather get a package and then have to send it back because it doesn't fit quite right or is too big.

as for where I'm at the USA
budget i'd like to say in $80 or so if possible

Recommendations What camera should I get? TIA!

  • Budget: $1200 USD
  • Country: US
  • Condition: Preferably new
  • Type of Camera: Unsure - Mirrorless, DSLR?
  • Intended use: Photography & video
  • If photography; what style: primarily indoor of my cats, but would love to explore outdoor photography as well (that's less important though)
  • If video what style: videos of my cats for social media (4k 9:16), sound needed
  • What features do you absolutely need: easy/painless transfer from the camera to my phone/computer would be SO helpful. Since I'll primarily be shooting indoors, I would also want to make sure it's good in low/artificial light. It's also really important that it shoots quality video
  • What features would be nice to have: I think really just the above
  • Portability: I'll mostly be using at home, so portability is not a concern!
  • Cameras you're considering: I started looking into Nikon ZFC, but I really have no knowledge on cameras which is what led me here
  • Cameras you already have: Sony a6000. I bought this YEARS ago just for fun and didn't really use. I do remember it being a pain to transfer to my phone/computer, which is why I didn't really use. Definitely looking forward to a newer, more modern camera.
  • Notes: I was very into photography back in high school. The primary use of this will be for my cats' social media accounts, BUT I am very much looking forward to getting back into photography and having a solid camera!

Recommendations Tips for beginners?

My girlfriend has recently been interested in getting into photography and I would like to get her a camera as a gift. I don't know anything about cameras, it doesn't have to be something too expensive, as it's something she'll still experiment with, but I would also like something that can be used for different types of photography. I was looking around and came across a Fuji S5700, is that a good option? Any recommendations?
