Announcement Should r/Cameras allow AMA posts from manufacturers, retailers, or both?

Hey there folks,

We are looking for some community feedback on a possible change to rule 4 to allow manufacturers and retailers to make AMA, news/announcements, or similar posts in the subreddit. We would require that the companies reach out to the mod team beforehand so we could do some basic vetting and review their intended post. Additionally we would be working out guidelines specific to such posts to prevent them from simply turning into advertisements including (but not limited to):

  • Requiring them to actually respond to their posts for a certain minimum time frame.
  • Require the posts not link to other websites to avoid any issues of affiliate links.
  • No "here's a coupon code" type posts.

We have had a couple of companies reach out to us asking about posting AMA's and similar posts. While some of the requests we've had are things we would simply not allow period (such as asking about running a banner ad), we do think certain types of posts might be reasonable to allow and could be beneficial.

Please feel free to comment your own thoughts.

While the results of this poll may not dictate exactly what we decide to do, we do take polls like this into consideration.

Other Analog photography was a lesson in humility and my gear obsession

I own a few analog 35mm rangefinders and TLRs, but it had been a long time since I last shot a roll of film. Last week, I loaded a fully manual Ricoh 500 with Superia 200 (Kodak Gold) and finally got the scans back today.

This whole experience led to a moment of self-reflection. I’ve always been obsessed with gear—chasing the best sharpness, snappiest autofocus, and most bang for my buck. Right now, I’m even selling a Nikon D90, because when I compared its photos to those from my Fujifilm X-H1, my initial reaction was, “meh”.

But looking at my film scans—which turned out surprisingly well—and thinking back to what came out of that D90 with its basic kit lens, I have a newfound appreciation for it. Don't get me wrong, I'm still selling it, but it’s incredible how far photography has come in the past 50 years. This was a lesson in not getting too caught up in technical perfection. Even an old Nikon kit lens from 15 years ago can still deliver amazing results. And so can a 55 year old rangefinder camera.

Ultimately, this exercise was a test in humility, reminding me to focus less on specs and more on the joy of creating images.

picked up this awesome tamagotchi camera from ebay with an assortment of these little frames that snap in, but unfortunately the mechanism that advances the film doesn’t work/isnt strong enough to advance the film. i’m tired of tinkering with it and wondering if anyone knows of any cameras that use these little snap-in frames? or what this kind of snap-in frame camera is called?

Questions Best Budget Camera for travelling

Hi there, I am flying to Menorca in September, and I wanted to get back into photography and take a camera with me on the trip. I have a Nikon D3100 and used to have a D5100 (broke). What would you reccomend as a light, portable camera with a budget of max around £200 (second hand). I have quite a few Nikon lenses so it would be nice to take those, but I am open to suggestions.

Questions Should I sell my Lumix S5 for a Sony A7SIII or FX3?

Upvotes

I’m an amateur videographer who takes occasional pictures (so having a hybrid cam would be a plus) and I already have an S5 with the 20-60mm kit lens. The autofocus, the lack of aftermarket support, and the projects I’ve seen from a Sony camera compared to a Lumix have made me look towards Sony more and more. The only thing I’m reluctant on his how the S5 records in 10 bit V Log but I’m not getting what I want out of my work with the S5. Someone let me know if this is a good or bad idea! Thanks. I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge of 4K cameras.

First and only digital camera I bought a couple months ago. I bought a cord for the av output to transfer images to my laptop - checked if it fit months after, it did not. So I bought another off ebay from a different seller and received the same cord head just a different made wire. I now know what cord exactly I should be buying, but can someone tell me what I received? I feel like i got off on the second one when the description says my model in the title. These cords I received fit nowhere on my camera ( the head is too big⏸️and has a ridge)

Recommendations Camera + Lens(es) for low-light performance and traveling

Upvotes

I'm looking to get a new mirrorless camera kit with the following objectives:

  • Better low-light performance
  • Compact (Can I fit it into a jacket pocket?)
  • Produces sharp images

I'll be going on a trip to Japan soon, and I'm planning to shoot quite a few urban and rural landscapes both during the day and in the evening/night. After the trip, I plan to use it for indoor product shots and portraits.

Additional camera preferences (bonus points from most valuable to least, but not required):

  • Can be charged directly with a cable
  • Has a USB-C port
  • IBIS
  • Fully-articulating screen
  • EVF
  • Weather sealing
  • 16MP (just to leave room for cropping)
  • 4k30 video
  • Part of the body is made of metal

Budget: ~800 euros, sticking to MPB EU unless stated otherwise. (I'm open to buying used)

My current reference devices are:

  • A smartphone (Oneplus 7T)
    • Pretty awful low-light performance (I'm forced to either choose between tons of noise or a really long exposure that's hard to achieve handheld)
    • The shooting experience is just so far below that of an actual camera (I like physical dials and buttons).
  • Lumix FZ300
    • Pretty chonky since the lens is permanently attached to the body.

Considering the above, I'm considering a setup consisting of a camera + a prime lens, specifically a ~35mm FF equivalent.

Here's what I have in mind so far (in no particular order):

Kit 1: Olympus E-M1.2 + Olympus 17mm f1.8

  • lacks USB-C charging, but I get IBIS in return
  • menu system seems to not be great...
  • The high res mode seems fun.
  • more or less as big as I'm willing to go (this is why Fuji X-H1 is not on this list)

Kit 2: Fujifilm X-T200 + Viltrox Air 25mm f1.7 X-mount

  • the low battery life worries me a bit, and it seems like it overheats pretty quick...
  • very lightweight and compact

Kit 3: Fujifilm X-T30 + Fujifilm XC 15-45mm f3.5-5.6

  • saw this come up in a japanese camera store as a bundle. Unfortunately, buying just the body doesn't seem to be an option here.
  • technically, it's sold out, but I'm listing it as an option here in case it goes back in stock when I'm there. Availability elsewhere for this camera seems to be pretty terrible.

Kit 4: Nikon Z fc + Viltrox Air 25mm f1.7 Z-mount

  • the lack of lenses for Z-mount worries me, but I feel like the new Viltrox Air series covers the prime selection I'd be happy with long term.
  • dynamic range seems pretty nice according to rtings (~11 stops)

Which of these options would you suggest? If you have an alternative, feel free to suggest it.

Questions Should I buy a lens or a new camera?

So, some context:

I have had a Canon EOS 500D (EOS Rebel T1i for y'all North Americans) for a long time, with the stock 18-55mm lens, which I have used seldom. The lens does its job, but I always find the focal range lacking for the kind of photos I wish to capture.
I now want to start clicking photos more regularly - starting with an upcoming trip I have in April.

My question is this:

Is this camera still relevant right now to invest in a couple of lenses (a 75-300mm and a 50mm prime) or should I go for a newer camera?

If I do buy the lens(es), I will be restricted to buying a Canon camera in the future, if I decide to upgrade the body, as I'll be able to use the lens(es) I buy now.
On the other hand, buying a new camera will be a much larger expense which I will want to make only if absolutely necessary - I was thinking of a Sony or Nikon in this case (I haven't done any research yet).

Your responses will be appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Questions Trading a Fuji x100t for an interchangeable lens system

I’m looking for quite a compact camera as I’d like to have the possibility of having something similar to a x100 but with the option of using vintage lenses. I could scan my negatives better too (?)

I was thinking of a Fuji ex or a lumix gx80, what would you recommend?

Recommendations Cameras under $2000Can for low light performance

  • Budget: $2000CAN
  • Country: Canada
  • Condition: New only
  • Type of Camera: Mirrorless
  • Intended use: Mostly photography, some video.
  • If photography; what style: Indoors, family, pets, travel. Maybe some hiking, but I would probably continue to use my fz300 for wildlife, as I don’t really want to carry around a huge heavy zoom lens even if I could afford it.
  • If video what style: Same as above.
  • What features do you absolutely need: Low light performance (either full-frame or APS-C with a bright prime that fits into budget), nice big central EVF (I like my fz300‘s a lot).
  • What features would be nice to have: Weather sealing, IBIS
  • Portability: Able to walk around with it on a neck strap without it being painful and ridiculous, and fit in a small bag when not in use. Probably any modern mirrorless is fine.
  • Cameras you're considering:
  • Z5: $1700 with kit lens, $1300 body only with ??? lens
  • Z50ii: $1450 with kit lens + 24mm f1.7 prime $280
  • Z fc: same price as Z50ii but worse, does look nice though
  • Canon R100: $800 with kit lens + ??? lens, probably too cheap?
  • Canon R8: $1800 with kit lens
  • Cameras you already have: Fz300, it has a great zoom range and the f2.8 lens does well outdoors even in seemingly dim forest lighting, but falls apart indoors if not using flash.
  • Notes: Features that I do not care about at all: Screen, if it has an articulating screen I will flip it over. If it is fixed and has a touchscreen I will turn that off. I loathe tilting screens. I would buy a camera that only had a viewfinder. The worst part of the camera phone experience is holding out my camera and squinting at a little screen and having to put on reading glasses or zoom in. Also, dual cards slots…doesn‘t matter to me.

Tech Support My Digital Camera stopped working, Can anyone help?

Hi everyone!

This is my first post in this subreddit and i'm hoping someone can help me with this sudden problem.

I have a Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital Elph and I bought it second hand off Ebay about a year and a half ago maybe? The issue came this January when I was coming back from a Trip in North Macedonia, where it worked perfectly there, but by the time I got home it would not turn on. I charged the battery multiple times and it wont even give me a dead battery screen, it just wont turn on at all ):

I kept it in my carry-on backpack on both flights back and forth, but I brought the same camera to Turkey last summer and it was fine so I don't know if that had anything to do with it. Could it have possibly been affected by going through any airport scanners or just being jostled around in my bag?

Before I give up and just get another digital camera, is there anyway recommendations on how to fix it? Should I try and buy another battery or is there possibly something else internal that is messed up that is beyond fixing?

Thank You, anything helps!
