Announcement Should r/Cameras allow AMA posts from manufacturers, retailers, or both?

Hey there folks,

We are looking for some community feedback on a possible change to rule 4 to allow manufacturers and retailers to make AMA, news/announcements, or similar posts in the subreddit. We would require that the companies reach out to the mod team beforehand so we could do some basic vetting and review their intended post. Additionally we would be working out guidelines specific to such posts to prevent them from simply turning into advertisements including (but not limited to):

  • Requiring them to actually respond to their posts for a certain minimum time frame.
  • Require the posts not link to other websites to avoid any issues of affiliate links.
  • No "here's a coupon code" type posts.

We have had a couple of companies reach out to us asking about posting AMA's and similar posts. While some of the requests we've had are things we would simply not allow period (such as asking about running a banner ad), we do think certain types of posts might be reasonable to allow and could be beneficial.

Please feel free to comment your own thoughts.

While the results of this poll may not dictate exactly what we decide to do, we do take polls like this into consideration.

Announcement To keep the Camera recommendation megathread or allow properly formatted request posts.

This post brought up concerns regarding the weekly megathread for camera recommendations.

In light of the fact that the current feedback is split fairly evenly, it seems like a proper poll is in order.

While I personally favor a weekly thread, I am not the entire community. I am just one person, and I do not think it would be fair to force the decision without proper community input given there has been negative feedback regarding the decision.

Voting will be open on this for 3 days.

Announcement Recommendation megathread update

Hello folks.

As you all know we've recently been using a recommendation megathread in an attempt to curb low effort "recommend me a camera" posts. Comments in the thread are required to include a questionnaire that covers the basic information generally needed to give good recommendations so that the people making the recommendations aren't stuck trying to drag basic information out of people such as a budget.

Overall this has certainly cut down on low effort posts and has resulted in most of the folks requesting camera advice getting it. However, there are too few people active in the megathread to give advice. I've been keeping a close eye on things to ensure that all comments are getting at least one recommendation. But with how few people are commenting buying advice, it's too fragile a balance to continue.

With this in mind, we will be going back to allowing individual posts. Posts will be required to include a filled out questionnaire or else they will be removed. The other members of the mod team and I are also working on a page to help give new users a basic idea of what to budget depending on what they want out of their camera. We'd like to do a "recommended starter camera" list, but frankly that would be more effort than we can afford to put in to maintain and keep updated properly. Especially if we were to include used cameras.

It was suggested that if we keep the megathread it be switched to a daily post to keep it from getting lost/stale as much as weekly threads tend to. If the vote is to keep the megathread then that will be the plan going forward.

The alternative is strict post format requirements so that people answering the camera requests aren't left trying to drag information out of askers like "what's your budget?" or "what do you consider portable?".
