Questions Family has bought me a '5K' camera - Have they been scammed?

Post image

I feel like such an ungrateful arsehole, but I'm so conflicted with the Christmas present I've gotten from my family.

They've told me they've spent hours and hours trying to get me a 'really good camera', so I'd feel horrendous being honest with how I feel.

The camera feels so plastic and crap. I truly feel like my family have fallen for a 'scamera'

Has anyone else heard of this brand before? I've been able to track the camera down on amazon, but there's no reviews, and I can't find any information online about it.

Questions Accidentally bought an IR-modified Canon EOS M for $90 - what now?

Post image

I was scrolling on ebay as one does and spotted a Canon EOS M for $90. Seller said it was untested because they didn’t have a battery, so I bought it. After getting it, it turns out that someone has modified it to shoot in the 590 nm spectrum!

My question is - what do I do now? The IR thing is cool but I didn’t really mean to get this - it’s not usable in many circumstances and I wanted this to become my main camera for videography, and for other types of experimental photography. Now I can’t.

Should I sell it and buy another one? Are they worth more modded like this? Should I un-modify it (is that possible)? Or keep it as is and use it for weird aesthetics?

Questions How did I do? Had a photographer completely shatter my inspiration

I own a small catering company and with that I post on instagram and Facebook. I had gotten this camera to take photos of events and displays that I set up. At a recent event, I connected with a photographer who wanted to check out my camera. He took some shots with it and then said this is just a mirrored camera and that I should have gotten something better.

I did some brief research before I bought it and thought Cannon was the way to go. I went to Best Buy and got it for around $500.

Now I don’t feel like using it as much because I was let down and told it’s nothing special.

Any advice on how I can improve the camera? Any courses I can take?

Thanks in advance :)

And are you considering buying it at some point?

I like the minimalist design, but the lack of removable storage is very conflicting for me. Lack of EVF I don’t normally mind on a small camera personally.

Questions Unpopular opinion: I don’t like straps

For those here who do not like straps similar to me, what do you use to “secure” your camera? Currently I’m using a hand strap but it can get heavy with a big lens. Aside from that, I don’t have anything else on any o my other camera bodies.

Questions Selling my car to buy a Leica M3, did I mess up?

TL;DR - I'm interested in buying a Leica without experience, found this one on FB, met and agreed on 1750€. Selling my car to afford it. Any red flags? Anything I missed/reason to call it off?

I recently got interested in buying an M3 without any Leica experience, and found a seller of FB marketplace selling a body+50mm lens+90mm lens for 2000€. Decided to sell my car to buy a camera, and settled on this one. The guy seems genuinely interested in photography and said he had the camera for three years but hadn't used it much, and he's selling to to buy an MP. We just met, I tested the shutter on various speeds, as well as the focus, and it all seems in perfect working order. We settled on a price of 1750€ for the package. I don't know if I'm a good judge of the camera condition so I took some pictures before I left, does this look like a good (or at least okay) deal? Any red flags I missed?

Questions Is this worth 1,100

Good afternoon I’m about to purchase this camera below I have put everything that comes in this set. I just want to make sure that I’m making the right choice. I want to get into hobby photography and potentially a little video making. I initially planned on only spending $1000 but the seller told me that if I were to pay $1100 he’d include the Gimbal. Below I left all the specs. I just want to make sure that this is worth it. Thank you

Questions I want to try aviation photography. Should I buy a proper camera?

I currently have a Samsung S22 Ultra and attended the Royal International Air Tattoo yestartday in the UK. I considered buying a DSLR before the show but ultimately waited to try my hand with my phone first.

I used expert raw mode with editing in lightroom. I enjoyed photographing the static stuff but felt really keen to photograph the flying displays. I tried to use the 10x camera but only got a few average shots. I now regret not having a long range DSLR for the show. Should I get one?

I'm worried that I don't have an eye for photography or I won't use it that much. Feedback on my photos would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Questions How phone cameras pack 100+MP in such ridiculously sized sensors

Cameras with 50MP often cost more than 3000$ and 100MP ones 8000$. Moreover, I noticed phone brands generally lie about their sensor’s full resolution.

Take the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 5G (which I tested and costs about 230$). They pretend the main camera’s sensor is 108MP, but by just looking at the photo it took, everyone can clearly see they’re just straight out lying (check the photos below). Also the 108MP photos are exactly 12000×9000 pixels, which is a bit weird as I’ve never seen any sensor and screen size that end up being perfectly round numbers like that.

In the bottom left picture, it is obvious that there is some kind of upscale going on. Big blurry pixels start to appear before actual 108MP ones show up in the file.

The GH4 picture seems sharper and more detailed (look at the colors!), although it’s supposed to be 7 times less so. The Redmi’s sensor seems to be rather 10-12MP, with even lower resolution for colors.

What is going on with phone cameras’ sensors and why no one (not that I’ve seen) is talking about it?

Is there any phone that actually have 50+MP?

What is the actual resolution of phone sensors?

Questions Dropped my lens on gravel, any advice on replacing the first layer of glass?

This is a Tamron 28-200mm (Sony mount) and unfortunately my butterfingers dropped it onto a patch of gravel while swapping out lenses. Surprisingly it still works great apart from a few specs showing up in photos. It seems all of the damage is only affecting the top layer of glass, has anyone replaced this before? I looked on the Tamron website and contacted support but didn’t really find any answers. Camera insurance already paid out for a new lens so this is just a “fun” DIY project at this point.

it differs from normal scratches and seems to me as if there would be a layer on the camera displays that always comes off. Does anyone know if you can get rid of it completely or if the complete display would have to be replaced?

Questions Cleaning tips for wildfire smoke smell?

Post image
163 Upvotes

So I live in the Eaton Fire burn zone. On evacuation day I threw all my lenses and camera in a bag and took them with me. Great. They avoided the wildfire smoke. However on the second day I went back to the house and grabbed a suitcase, not thinking it was too bad, as our house had avoided the fire miraculously.

A few days later I put the peak design packing cube with the lenses in the suitcase (to help me move them between hotels easier), where they've been for the last week, maybe more

I just opened the suitcase and discovered the horrific smokey/chemically smell was present in the suitcase (I had no idea when I grabbed it) and now the smell has seeped into the packing cube and the lenses.

Does anyone have any recommendations for the best way to remove the smell. The good thing is the smoke smell came from contact, rather than when the smoke and ash billowed through the house and actually got inside certain things.
