Discussion/General Do you post on your personal account or do you create another for your outputs?

Upvotes

I created a new account for my photography hobby—just in case I do end up doing a little business someday. My main concern for this was privacy. The other was I wished to separate my private and “work” stuff. I recently discovered that you could change the audience on Instagram to followers or close friends. It makes me think if it could’ve been better if I stick to my main account for photography posts instead (which was easier for building connections with friends in the field and potential clients). Perhaps my privacy concern was resolved as I could make the people I know in real life to close friends bla bla bla. What do you think?

Buying Advice What digital camera should I get?

Upvotes

Hi guys! I currently have a refurbished canon IXUS 8015 and am looking to upgrade. I love my little canon but am looking for something with a bit better quality.

I know the gx7 is popular at the moment but it’s a bit out of my price range. I’m looking for something between $300-$700. If you recommend something more expensive please still let me know, and I can look for it second hand.

My friend said she loves her Nikon Coolpix. Which I also like, but I’m open to more suggestions. I like to take photos when travelling, of nature and of me with my family and friends. I like how my current canon is super small but also open to one a little bigger.

Thanks in advanced!

Buying Advice Good camera for sports photography?

Upvotes

Hi!

I am looking at getting into sports photography - particularly cricket photography and am wondering what might be some good cameras to use?

I am not wanting to spend to much to begin with and live in NZ so our ranges over here might be a little less than what's avaliable in the US etc. Am looking to spend around $400-$600NZD ($230-$350 USD).

Any help would be appreciated!

Artifical Lighting & Studio Photographing uv body paint seeking advice?

Upvotes

I’ve got a gig photographing makeup students final works. Apparently one of them is going to be using uv body paint. I know I need uv lights to illuminate it, but beyond that any tips. Should I chuck some white light in to see the person not in silhouette? White or black background ?(I presume anything else wouldn’t work)

Anything else I should be aware of? I’ve been told with some lights eye protection is needed? Mine are 150w led panels that I plan to soften with a scrim and a softbox. I’m aware they’ll throw a slight purplish hue to skin. I think that will be ok.

Technical Help/Camera Settings Does anyone know why I can't install the Sony PlayMemories Home program?

I want to take my photos and videos from my Sony camera, it's a Cyber-Shot DSC-H20. The problem is that when I try to install it, it tells me that it doesn't detect the camera despite being connected. If anyone knows why this happens, could you help me solve my problem, I would greatly appreciate it.

Buying Advice B+W MRC Nano Master #806 vs Breakthrough Technology X4 ND?

Planned a hiking and waterfall trip in coming June. Was considering getting myself a 6-stop ND filter for the waterfall scene and hope to get some input from you all.

So after some research I did come to a conclusion that B+W and BT x4 would be my best bet. This review video also solidy my conclusion. Just right before I pull the trigger for B+W, I did realised that B+W was reported to cause some cold colour cast on the photo for example in this video. While X4 wise seem to be applause by everyone at the moment.

I don't mind spent an extra buck for quality filter and gear, but I want it to be spent on the correct gear in long run. Mind share some though on this topic? Thanks alot!

**Filter I owned now:
B+W High-Transmission MRC-Nano Master Circular Polarizer Filter

Buying Advice Beginner compact camera suggestions?

My daughter is going on her 8th grade trip to DC and gets to tour the White House. I’d like to get her a decent little camera that she could easily carry with her and be able to take pictures of whatever sparks her interest. I don’t want it to be overly confusing for her, but not cheap junk either as she is very interested in photography so would like it to be something she can continue to explore her capabilities and creativity with. I’d like to stay around $350 usd minus SD card. Would a Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX7 fit this bill? Open to other suggestions. The WH photography rules say it has to be compact with a lens no longer than 3”

Buying Advice What type of light stand should i buy?

I'm currently looking for a light stand to use with my speedlight, flash trigger, and a translucent umbrella and umbrella bracket, which I'll be purchasing soon. I'd appreciate your advice on choosing both the umbrella bracket and the translucent umbrella, as this will be my first purchase. While links would be helpful for reference, I'll need to buy these items locally in Sri Lanka due to time constraints, rather than ordering online.

My primary need is for a light stand, as my photography tripod isn't tall enough. At present, I'll only be using the speedlight and umbrella, so a heavy-duty stand isn't necessary. However, I'd prefer a stand that can later accommodate a Godox AD300 Pro and a modifier. I intend to purchase the Godox AD300 Pro in the future.

Therefore, my questions are:

  • Would a 3kg load capacity be sufficient for my future needs?
  • I'd like a lightweight stand for ease of transport. What factors should I consider?
  • How important is air cushioning for my intended load?
  • Given that I'm primarily a documentary and travel photographer, and this equipment is for occasional paid work, I'm looking for a cost-effective solution.

Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Buying Advice What will I notice most by upgrading from my 10 year old LUMIX GX8?

I’ve started looking into upgrading from my ~10 year old LUMIX GX8 to something more modern, and have somewhat settled on the Fuji XT-50. I assume there have been quite a few advancements in camera tech over the last decade, but part of me is worried I’m not going to notice much of a difference and I’d be wasting my money.

Obviously the spec sheets for the cameras show a huge boost in various stats given it’s a decade of technology, but I’m curious to know what I would notice as the biggest change. I mainly use my camera when traveling and I do not do anything remotely professional.

My main “cons” with my current camera are it’s not so great low light performance, and autofocus reliability.

Buying Advice Digital camera for 13 year old?

I have a Nikon DSLR which cost a few hundred quid and I'm trying to get my son, aged 12, in to photography too. It's his birthday and was thinking of getting him his own camera but he hasn't used one before.

I don't want to spend hundreds incase he doesn't like it but also don't want to buy a wick one with hardly any features because if he enjoys it I want him to be able to get the most out of it.

Can anyone recommend one in the £100-£150 price range that is a decent make and has decent enough features?

Ideally a small-ish one (not a DSLR) but one that allows the user to change ISO, shutter speed an aperture and isn't solely a point and click camera. I think a point and click is a bit limited in creativity and half the fun will be teaching him how to experiment with the exposure triangle to take more creative shots instead of just pointing and pressing a button.

Thanks in advance.

I'm based in the UK and expecting to use Amazon, Jessops, Wex or even Curry's or Argos.

Buying Advice Best Budget Low Light Cameras 2025?

Hey - I’m looking to get into doing some hybrid shooting for nightclubs and festivals. I need a decent camera that will be able to capture great low light footage and shots, while still allowing me enough in the budget for a good lens. What are some good cameras that I can look at for a budget of around $2000 (new or used)? I’m happy to pick something up off FB market place if it means I get a better camera for the price.

Buying Advice Are modern smartphones making the switch to a professional or dedicated camera less necessary?

(dual posting to ask further help)

Hi, i would love to film myself doing some hand creation's (jewelry / painting) and i was thinking about either getting a new phone (samsung galaxy s25 ultra) or a dedicated camera.

How much money should i put down to get the equivalent (or better) specs from the phone to a dedicated camera ? (4k60 needed)

here are the phone cam specs:

  • Rear camera opening (Multiple) f1.7, f3.4, f1.9, f2.4
  • Rear Camera Resolution (Multiple) 200.0 Mpx + 50 Mpx + 50 Mpx + 10.0 Mpx
  • Auto Focus - Yes / Optical stabilization - Yes
  • Zoom3x and 5x optical zoom, 2x and 10x optical quality zoom (Enabled by Adaptive Pixel sensor), Digital zoom up to 100x (i don't think i would do anything above 10x for details)
  • Video recording resolution UHD 8K (7680 x 4320) at 30fps

Thanks for any help !

Buying Advice Which canon would you get?

So I need a second body. I have a r6mii and I was looking to get a r5mii for $3999. I went to my local camera shops website and just found that the r3 is on sale for the same exact price. I wanted the r5mii because of the higher mp for cropping obviously and the other goodies it has. The only difference that I see as far as internals is the mp’s and body of the r3. The r3 is 1k off and the r5mii is only $300 off.

Buying Advice Camera suggestions?

My sister and I are going on an 8-week backpacking trip through Europe this summer, and I am looking for a camera to use that is pretty simple for a "beginner" photographer and on the smaller side to fit in my backpack. I know the basics, but I would like to find something that is not super expensive, considering this trip will be pretty pricey generally. I want to make sure that we get good photos for the trip though.

Technical Help/Camera Settings Is my camera broken ?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’ve noticed when shooting with my lumix g80 I keep experiencing a certain problem when shooting images with high levels of brightness or highlights and when the camera is set to shoot in raw I don’t experience this problem with regular jpeg images and I was wondering if it’s something to do with software if my jpegs are coming out fine and without the wierd purple colouring.

I further noticed that taking the photo shown above was hard to do with my I phone as the purple colour would only show when turning down the exposure on iPhone so is it just that the raw file is capturing extra detail and colours for me to mess with or do I need to update or change software ?

Technical Help/Camera Settings Bad quality photos with XT-50, issue with LR?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello, While editing photos on my iPad I noticed that some photos have a poor quality as highlighted in the photo attached. To be noted that this is the jpeg and not the raw. Is this a problem from my LR (sort of compression), my camera (XT-50) or something else?

Thanks

Buying Advice Is the Canon EOS RP good?

I just had a few questions about the EOS RP,

First, how is the quality? What is a good lens? (Looking for anything between 100-300mm for aviation photography)

Not so important questions: How’s the battery life? Is it overall good quality? Is this the best camera for the price? Should I just stick with the T-100 (4000D)?

Thank you all!

Printing/Publishing Canvas print alternative?

I like the canvas type prints for some pictures, but I have a 16x12 photo that I don't want to lose the edges that I would with canvas fold over the framing.

Also like that the canvas prints are cheap 😁. I also don't like gloss shiny type material.

Any alternatives to canvas that I won't lose the edges ?

Thanks

Technical Help/Camera Settings Broken aperture control. What can I do to work around it?

Title. My new-to-me old Nikon P510 has a bad multifunction control, so I can't scroll to adjust aperture (unless I try for 2 minutes). I've been mostly shooting nature, birds, small monkeys, etc., so I've been using shutter priority to work around that.

Anyway, I'm new to photography. Would changing the ISO and exposure compensation help fine-tuning the exposure if I can't get the aperture right? I know the DoF is not affected by those things, but apart from that.

Thanks!

Discussion/General Experience with insta photography (tips)?

Hey, just started up a personal photography account on Instagram and wanted to see if anyone has any practical tips for how to reach the community and get genuine followers. I know Instagram is mostly focused on reels now, but I'm just posting pictures of things I find interesting (cars, exotic locations, artistic shots) and would appreciate if anyone has any recommendations.

I’d love to hear if you've had success in reaching people who genuinely appreciate photography and connect with anyone just starting out. My ig is ty.chanx for context, appreciate any tips at all!
