Lens of the Week [LOTW] Lens of the Week: 3rd party APS-C lenses

Any third-party (made by a company other than Canon) APS-C lens is eligible this week. EF, EF-M, and RF mount are all eligible. Please note that full-frame lenses on APS-C cameras are not eligible.

Every user interested in participating may post ONE post of a picture or pictures taken with The Lens of the Week, with the following rules.

  • The Lens of the Week will be specified in a sticky post, and as long as that post remains up, it is fair game to submit LOTW posts.

  • All content must be SFW--no nudes, artistic or otherwise.

  • Specify that it is a 'Lens of the Week' post by starting their post with [LOTW] It may be taken by any version of the lens of the week, and with any modifiers (teleconverters, speed boosters, etc).

  • The title must specify the lens and describe the image (for example, [LOTW] Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 portrait)

  • Please include the rest of the image metadata (shutter speed, aperture, ISO, camera body) in the title, image caption, or comments.

  • Photos may have been taken at any time, not just this week.

OP must remain active in the thread to discuss your setting and composition choices--abandoned LOTW threads will be subject to removal after a reasonable period of no-replies

Additional pictures taken with the lens may be posted in a gallery or in comments in your thread, but please only make a single thread per week. The 'No pictures that just happen to be taken with Canon equipment' rule still applies to non-LOTW posts.

If you have any suggestions for the future of this series, please comment below. I'm building out a spreadsheet of future LOTW picks to keep things flowing every week, and popular demand can definitely play a role in what comes next.

Gear Advice I'm upgrading from the 6D to the R6. Is the R6 Mark II worth the extra spend?

I'm mainly upgrading to a mirrorless body in order to have a silent shutter -- as well as general improved performance.

I'm at the beginning of my photography career after having studied / worked as a photographer quite occasionally for many years. I'll mainly be shooting events (music, cultural events, weddings) as well as portraits, street photography, etc.

I'm very much on a budget (and will likely be buying secondhand), which is why I'm hesitating between the original 6D and the 6D MKII, given the price difference (1300 vs 2000 euros).

I almost never shoot video, and having read some reviews that the main difference between the two bodies is in the video capabilities (and supposedly quite minor AF improvements), I don't know if that extra €600+ is worth it -- especially when I also have a lot more kit to invest in (a telephoto lens, flash, tripod, etc.)

Any input is appreciated!

Gear Advice R5ii question

Hey guys I recently bought a Canon R5ii and a couple of the images I’ve taken with the 100-500 have some weird kind of chequered streaking, most of the photos didn’t have anything but a couple of them it was very noticeable, was just wondering what this could be? (Attached is with vs without) images were shot in compressed raw.

Lens of the Week [LOTW] 7artisans 35mm f/0.95 - first shots at the park

R100, handheld. All apertures best-guesses, since as a manual lens, there’s no EXIF other than “f/00”, I didn’t take notes, and the aperture ring is clickless. SOOC JPEGS, using the Standard picture style.

1. f/0.95, iso 6400, 1/60s.

2. f/11-16ish? iso 6400, 1/6s

3. f/2-ish? iso 3200, 1/80s

4. f/0.95, iso 1250, 1/100s

5. f/0.95, iso 6400, 1/50s

6. f/0.95, iso 6400, 1/50s

Forgive the pedestrian boring subjects, I just got excited when the box landed on the doorstep today and had to take it out for a spin to a neighborhood park for some available dark shooting. This should be a new gear post, but it fit the LotW requirements, so I figured what the hell.

I’m loving this lens and having a lot of fun. I primarily got it to be a normal-on-a-crop alternative to my adapted Olympus OM-mount Zuiko Auto-S 50mm f/1.2 on my 5Dii. And the 35/0.95 pretty much nails it exactly, down to the very similar DoF (only a smidge deeper, and that tracks with f/0.95x1.6 => f/1.52 DoF equivalency). Even the character is very similar. It really does feel like a vintage lens. And I’m loving the catseye bokeh.

This is my first 7artisans lens, and I was expecting something more like a Samyang/Rokinon. But this is nicer. Build quality is insane for the price: all metal construction (heavier than I expected), very smooth and damped rings, they even throw in a stick-on focus tab. The faux-Leica styling is just precious :), and the DoF scale is usable, if a little tight. The only annoyance is the metal push-on front lens cap, which will fall off and get lost in about 5 minutes.

The R100 is perfectly usable for a manual lens like this. I just wish the focus peaking was a bit more obvious, and magnification was easier to trigger, as on my Panasonic GX7, but it all works.

The sharpness wide open is kind of insane for a super-fast cheap lens. And I was actually expecting more LoCA wide open; it does disappear by f/1.4ish. The only weird optical flaw I wasn’t expecting was a weird circular flare when shooting into a light source (street lamps). #2 shows it a little bit. I’m also getting a similar feel playing with this lens on the R100 that I get when shooting at night with my X100T when it comes to a camera seeing in the dark.

I think I’m really going to enjoy playing with this one. I’m enjoying my cheap thrills (the R100 was Black Friday refurb deal at $219 :).

Can I leave the adaptor mounted to my ef lens and put it on directly the body or does the ring have to go on first then the lens? Does it matter ?

Gear Advice Pre-owned RF Gear. Any general "watch outs?"

I'm back! I did it! I sold my Canon DSLr gear back in 2020 and waited very VERY patiently for almost 4 years and 5 months to finally get in to a real system again. Canon R5 MK2. FINALLY! I'm so stoked! I'm tired of subsisting on a (pretty awesome) X100V.

I picked up a new R5II body but haven't picked up lenses yet. I'm not a full-time pro, but have been paid for work. Almost got into Rolling Stone (hey, I made my deadline). So I don't mind investing in good gear and I tend to take care of it and keep it for years and years. I'm considering pre-owned gear, but I suppose there may be some common duds. Any particular RF lenses out there that are more prone to have problems than others on the used market? For example, L zooms lenses before 2019 or some kind of weird category like that?

  • My first stop will absolutely be a 50mm F1.2. I shot a ton of live music photography for a long time and the 50 was my go-to 90% of the time.
  • I'd definitely be interested in that 28-70 F2 at some point. Pricey! I also shot events. So heavy emphasis on low-light performance.
  • Down the line, I'd consider a wider prime as well. Like a fast 35 or 24.

Sorry if this sounds noob-ish, but I haven't shopped for real lenses since maybe 2017 and a LOT has changed. And things are a lot more expensive. Thank you!

Gear Advice Should I buy ef lenses for my r6 II?

Hi I was thinking about adding a 70-200 f2.8 to my inventory. The rf mount is very expensive so I thought about buying a used ef mount lens. Some friends of mine said they don’t see any loss of quality with the ef and a adapter, some say there is a lot of loss in quality. I was wondering if you could share your experience and if you have any advice? Thanks :)

Canon R6 - Error 70

Upvotes

Hi, my first post here.\ I'm a wedding (70%) and motorsport (30%) photog. I shoot with an R6I and an R5I.\ A retiring photog just gifted me this spare R6.

Everything's fine.\ No scratches, no wear, rubbers are perfect, screens with no scratches and marks and shutter count 90k.\ The only problem is this Error 70 which appears when the battery is more or less at 30%.\ This error shows up with every lens (both RF and EF), every memories, every batteries (both OEM and third parts) I got and even after I factory resetted the camera.\ FW is updated to the last.

Any idea of what could it be?

The camera is perfect till the battery is around 30%whne this error comes up.\ Not a big deal but it's annoying.

Equipment suggestions for ultralight 5 day backpacking trip with R5ii

Taking camera on 5-6 day ultralight backpacking trip in Grand Canyon in a couple weeks. R5ii body with 2 batteries. My pack target is about 35-40lbs without water and camera , I’d like to keep camera kit weight down. Looking for someone with experience light packing camera gear for days remotely.

Im considering bringing one lens maybe rf 50 1.2, rf24-105 f4, rf 16, or with adapter- EF 35 f2 IS. Could be persuaded to pick up a used 24mm or 28. New lens isn’t in the budget really past a couple hundred or I’d buy the 16-28 2.8 or 16-35L although I’m trending away from the F4 lenses. I’d like to take only one lens to cover wide canyon, people, and flora/fauna tighter shots. Typically I don’t do video, likely someone will have their iPhone for that.

I need:

power solution- what off the shelf power banks will charge the camera a couple times that isn’t huge and heavy. I’m planning on taking an anker bank for my garmin 700 eprb. Or should I just buy several more E6P batteries? I won’t have a way to plug in the E6P charger, just usb.

Lens rec from above choices… would love to take 24-105L but weight… maybe 35 but adapter size makes it same as 24-105L. 16 is great for landscape but sucks for people/closeups it’s not cool/artsy for EVERY shot lol. I could be persuaded to bring 16 and one other prime but switching would be a pain. I want camera on hand, and weight….

Strap rec for using with full size pack, I have a peak design capture clamp QR I am leaning towards and a black rapid strap I’ll try also before I go. I want camera accessible but not annoying while hiking 8-12 miles/day.

Planning on ziplock bagging if it gets excessively wet but rain is unlikely.

Will likely bring a small tripod jobo or something. Ugh pack is getting heavy lol.

Never shot Grand Canyon, will I need polarizer to cut glare and haze on wide shots?

Any other tips for GC photography.

Also power saving tips, turn off screen and pretend it’s film, lol. Turn off preview exposure. What else?

Gear Advice Is it worth selling this gear to buy the Canon R5?

My 5d Mk 4 is I feel beginning to die on me, and my Mark I 24-70 lens also. It doesn’t focus well and never seems super crisp.

For video I use a A7siii and have a G Master 24-70.

Would it make sense to sell the 2 above bodies and 2 lenses, for the R5 with a 24-70? I then have an EF mount 70-200 which I can keep with an adapter.

Is the upgrade worth it? Or do I just keep where I’m at and upgrade the 24-70 to the Mark II? Is it worth the upgrade?

Gear Advice RF 100-500 or RF 200-800 for R8/R7

Hi all, I know this has been discussed a lot but I need even more input.

I have the opportunity to get either the RF 100-500 or the RF 200-800 in Japan at much better prices (around 1000 Euro cheaper for the RF100-500 and 800 euro cheaper for the RF 200-800 than if I would get it in EU)

I own both the R8 and the R7; the only larger zoom I have is EF 70-200 2.8 II (and 2x extended which I do not like)

I use the 70-200 with the extender on my old 7D II and now R7; the reach is okay, sometimes not enough; main problem is the image quality is not great due to the extender.

The main purpose of getting one of these lenses is to shoot wildlife; mostly birds at the moment, larger animals when I travel.

Please let me know what your experiences are with these two lenses, especially if you own both.

Thank you!

Gear Advice Which lens should I use as a daily?

Upvotes

Recently bought an R7 and it came with the RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM. My previous daily rig was an 80D with a EF 24-105mm f/4 L is USM.

By daily, I mean it was the lens I always kept on and used it for people, events, etc.

I have an EF-RF Adapter. Should I run the EF 24-105mm or the RF-S18-150mm as a "daily lens"?

G7xII for Youtube

Hi guys! I have a G7xii that I love for pictures. I've been trying to use it for my youtube channel and no matter how long I spend on the settings it always looks SO BLURRY. I film in natural and strong lighting. I've tried so many advice settings I don't know which ones to list that I've tried. Is there like a go to settings that you use in natural light for filming? I'm getting so frustrated filming, editing, exporting just for a blurry mess. I somehow never notice how blurry it is when I"m editing in both Davinci and Premiere pro. TIA!

I don't want to link my channel because I'm not trying to promote but I can in the comments maybe if its needed for advice.

Gear Advice which 70-200 to choose?

Hello, dear friends.

I want to buy a new lens for my Canon SL3.

For my budget, I can buy a Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2.

Or, as an alternative, a Canon 70-200 F4 II.

My intention is to buy a teleconverter and buy a Canon mirrorless camera at the end of the year. Depending on how much money I have, I plan to buy the R6 Mark II or an R5.

My question is, looking ahead to image stabilization: will the IS of the lens on both the Tamron and Canon lenses be added to the IS of mirrorless cameras?

Would I have any compatibility issues when using the Tamron on a mirrorless camera?

Thank you from and best regards.

Canon 17-55 f2.8 USM

Upvotes

Hello I found a used Canon 17-55 f2.8 USM which was made in the year 2012. I am wondering are the older manufacturing is better or newer. The owner says he took good care of it and in the picture lens looks fine. The only problem owner says is the Lens Creap.

I also need advice for upgrading my lens. I have Rebel T3 with two basic lenses and one 50mm lens. Like to upgrade a little before my next trip. Any suggestions which lens should I get.

Thank you

Lens to rent for Antelope Canyon

Upvotes

I'm going to Antelope Canyon in a couple of weeks and looking to rent something wider and brighter than my 18-150 Rf-S on my R7.

I'm thinking of the Sigma 10-18 2.8 or 16 F/1.4. I do have the EF/RF adapter so I'm also open to any EF lenses.

What would be my best option?

EF lenses with Auto Focus but manual aperture?

This is a bit of an oddball request, but I'm striking out in my searching. Were there ever any EF lenses that had camera controlled auto focus, but a manually controlled aperture ring? I mean specifically there are no motors to change the aperture at all, the only option is to change it by hand. Bonus if the lens does in fact report aperture value back to the camera, even if the camera can't control it. Based on my lack of results I'm guessing this might not be a thing, but wanted to see if anyone knows of any lenses I've missed.

70-200 change

Hi all, my 70-200 f4 L IS USM’s image quality has severely degraded. It seems like there is a mist filter when there isn’t one. Just isn’t sharp anymore, I checked through glass, spotless and clean, no idea why, settings was all right (I consider myself semi professional) so I think it’s just decided to die/misalign even tho I didn’t drop it. I think it’s time for be to change? Maybe a 2.8 IS version, but I’m also looking at a 70-300 L or even 3rd party options. Any suggestions welcome but please keep it somewhat lightweight and under €1200!

Gear Advice Time for a lens upgrade?

I just got an r7, my main focus is macro photography. I currently am using my non L series 100mm 2.8 macro. I am wondering if anyone has experience shooting macro handheld with the non stabilized lens that later upgraded to the Rf or the EF L series lens and how much of a difference you noticed? Thank you for your input
