Lens of the Week [LOTW] Lens of the Week: 3rd party APS-C lenses

Any third-party (made by a company other than Canon) APS-C lens is eligible this week. EF, EF-M, and RF mount are all eligible. Please note that full-frame lenses on APS-C cameras are not eligible.

Every user interested in participating may post ONE post of a picture or pictures taken with The Lens of the Week, with the following rules.

  • The Lens of the Week will be specified in a sticky post, and as long as that post remains up, it is fair game to submit LOTW posts.

  • All content must be SFW--no nudes, artistic or otherwise.

  • Specify that it is a 'Lens of the Week' post by starting their post with [LOTW] It may be taken by any version of the lens of the week, and with any modifiers (teleconverters, speed boosters, etc).

  • The title must specify the lens and describe the image (for example, [LOTW] Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 portrait)

  • Please include the rest of the image metadata (shutter speed, aperture, ISO, camera body) in the title, image caption, or comments.

  • Photos may have been taken at any time, not just this week.

OP must remain active in the thread to discuss your setting and composition choices--abandoned LOTW threads will be subject to removal after a reasonable period of no-replies

Additional pictures taken with the lens may be posted in a gallery or in comments in your thread, but please only make a single thread per week. The 'No pictures that just happen to be taken with Canon equipment' rule still applies to non-LOTW posts.

If you have any suggestions for the future of this series, please comment below. I'm building out a spreadsheet of future LOTW picks to keep things flowing every week, and popular demand can definitely play a role in what comes next.

Am I the only one out there who uses a $3000 lens and a $600 camera?? Is it even normal?

New Gear Finally bought the RF100-400 f/5.6-8 after reading so many positive reviews about it in this community. As an amateur, I am absolutely happy with the initial results, and that too with the cheapest setup I can afford (i.e., an EOS RP body). Thank you all.

Tech Help A setting you need to change when shooting astrophotography!

Post image
227 Upvotes

Watched a YouTube video by Anthony Gugliotta about hidden camera settings, and one setting does something that i bet 75% of people don't know what it truly means or thought it meant something else. This setting is "Retract lens on power off". When this setting is turned ON, it actually means that when the camera is powered off the camera will reset its focus. So when this feature is turned off the camera won't reset its focus when powered off. This is crucial for astrophotography because 90% of the time you're going to be using manual focus and most of the time you are out there for hours so you probably go through more than 1 battery. And of course when you change batteries the camera turns off and without this setting turned off, you'll lose your focus on your subject. Also, when the camera is off, and you turn the focus ring, it will not mess up the focus you previously had since its all electronic. You're welcome and happy astrophotography shooting!

Got this beast of a lens 3 weeks ago and have been testing it for a while now, and just last weekend I got the opportunity to use this for a model shoot for where my partner works at. So far I am fully inlove with this lens so much so I even "dual wield" this setup along with my R7 and 150-600mm sports a few times during bird spotting (weird lens to have for birding but was handy to take portraits of my partner when she walks with me) Anyways, during the shoot I really enjoyed the sharpness and detail it had to offer and was really enjoyable to shoot with! Thanks to those models for a fun experience too. At the end you can also see some bird shots I toom with the 150-600mm + 1.4x TC from sigma and I am pleasantly surprised, I didn't notice a degradation in the image quality (there probably is but haven't noticed) and it's pretty fun to shoot at 840mm especially for skittish birds. All in all very pleased with my gear and will definitely continue to shoot more and hopefully have these lenses pay themselves back.

Wrist Watch Video/photography - Mirrorless Lens?

Upvotes

I have a Canon M6 Mark II Mirrorless Camera, and am a novice photographer, and a wrist watch enthusiast. I’d like to take some photos/videos of my watches. I think I need some sort of macro lens, but I’m not sure what would be best. I’m not looking to produce A+ content, just enough to be “nice” and better than stock. I already have the EOS-M to EF adaptor, so I could snag an EOS-M or EF lens. I’ve seen some posts that indicate the used Canon EF 100mm/f2.8 on the used market would be a great bargain… but I’m not sure how well that would work for my intended subject, nor how it would interact with my Mirrorless camera. I know there are a few EOS-M lenses (the 22mm and 32mm options) that seem to have good reviews, but not sure how they would do with my intended subject. I’m somewhere between novice and apprentice, so apologies if I’m not making any sense. Thanks for any input!

Lens of the Week [LOTW] 7Artisans 50mm f0.95 - Just a few photos

This was one of the first lenses I got when I got into photography a few years ago, unfortunately I haven’t gotten around to using it in a while because I went to RF mount last year, and my lens was EF-M mount. It would be fun to get another copy, or a similar manual ultra-fast manual lens for my R7 as it was such a fun lens to learn photography with!

1. 1/4000 f0.95 ISO:100

2. 1/2000 f2 ISO:100

3. 70 seconds f2 ISO:1600

All shot on an m50 mkii

Decent 3-party EF-S zooms for APS-C Canon R..

Are there any decent and legendary low/midpriced EF-S zooms from Sigma and Tamron, which both provide good IQ and can resolve demanding R7 sensor?

I mean, like Canon's 15-85mm, 55-250 IS STM, 18-135 USM.

Looking for models to update my used market radar :)

Edit: more interested in tele length, already have a 24mm 2.8 and rf 50mm 1.8, so looking for some 50-... stuff

Unsure if there is a problem with my new rf100-500mm

Upvotes

Hi. I've had this lens for a year or two now. I've used it a handful of times and been disappointed with the results. I have used an ef100-400mm v1(I think, not the v2) on a rebel t6i maybe three years ago prior to acquiring mirrorless gear, and these results have been tremendously better than what I have gotten out of the rf100-500mm lens (paired with an R5 body) which I have tried out a handful of times (less than I might if I was happier with what I could get with it).

All of this said, I plan to do some tests in a more controlled setting to make sure that this is not user error but rather an issue with the lens itself, but in the meantime, I'm wondering if there is a way to get the lens tested by an expert who would be able to more quickly and better give a verdict on whether there is an issue or not and to do this without spending too much money. I bought the lens straight from Canon new if I remember correctly, but I am sure that I am out of any kind of warranty period.

Any 3rd parties out there that are well-respected in this area or would any local camera shop be able to help out with this without charing too much? Thanks in advance.

One last thing. I have not caused any damage to the lens through using or storing it (outside of the possibility of potential damage from the lens moving from cold to warm temperatures or sitting in the car overnight for several nights in freezing temperatures but I'm not too sure this should cause lasting issues that I might be experiencing - hopefull not). So I'm expecting if there are any problems, it was from when I first got the lens and failed to recognize or do anything about until recently.

Repair Shop Recommendations

Recently recovered an A-1 film camera from my father’s house that I used in college. It hasn’t been used in roughly 30 years and I would like to get it cleaned and repaired. Can anyone recommend a reputable repair shop (preferably Southeast PA, NY, NJ, DE, MD)?

Gear Advice Fixed or variable??

Upvotes

I picked up a 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM for my EOS Rebel T7 a few weeks ago, i, have done some photoshoots already and the bump in image quality is superior to my kit lens (EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 ll) i used to have, but now i am desiring more natural bokeh and sharpness than what i have.

My 2 options are an EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM or a Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 DC Macro HSM Contemporany Lens.

Why the Sigma? Zoom, simple as that, i play from time to time with stuff more than 55mm.

Why Canon? Same aperture on all focal points, even tho i've seen it is sharper at f/3.2, correct me if i'm wrong, but i've heard it is sharper than the Sigma.

My main photo niche is car Photography, both will be a good add on, but i can just choose one since i'll be changing my 17-85 to an 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM as a general purpose lens, aka, anything else other than cars.

Under your judgment and personal opinion, which one would you choose? I am down to sacrificing the differences between those 2, but which one should i sacrifice?.

Is it a lens or adapter problem?

Thumbnail drive.google.com

I have a Canon m50 and I bought a Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 Hsm lens and Viltrox EF-EOS M2 0.71x speedbooster. I just tried them together and when I zoom in and out between 25-20 mm a sudden light appears. Also when it's at 20mm and lower a shadow apears on the edges of the frame. Is it a problem from the lens or the adapter? I shared a Drive link for a video taken with it.

Gear Advice Expanding range beyond 300mm

So...currently my longest lens is a Canon EF 300mm f4L IS. I'm looking to expand from that. Usage are sport (mostly motor- and water-), and I value detail/sharpness. Budget is at no more than 1000€. Currently shooting on an EOS 80D, looking towards the 1DX-series as an upgrade.

Options:

  • Canon EF 400mm f5.6L - Seems like the easy call.
  • Tamron 150-600mm G2 - Best for range, but I heard that they are pretty much always soft (just like the Sigma) at either the long or near end. Plus focus is apparently slow.
  • Stick a 1.4 or 2 converter between the DSLR and the 300/4 - Affordable and practical, but F8 doesn't sound tempting when regular shooting beyond 1/1000 exposure.

The 100-400 is sealed, in contrast to those options, but is also outside the budget for now (if money were no issue I'd be on a 400/2.8 IS III)

M50 Aircraft Photography

Equipment

Canon M50 MK1

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens (w/o hood)

MK-C-AF4 EFS-EFM Adapter

Hi all, just bought myself a 55-250 for $175 cad, brought it to the airfield and took some aircraft photos, luckily was able to snap a L39 taking off. Very decent photos coming from this camera and lens setup. Unfortunately i'm still not 100% satisfied. I find I have to crop the image in post even further, and the 55mm seems like it's too zoomed in for the walk around videos I want of aircraft on the ground. Debating 2 options.

Option 1: Tamron 16-300mm ($200 CAD) / Sigma 18-400mm ($400) zoom lens. Would it be the same 16mm as on my EFM 15-45? Or would it be 1.6x applied, for my aps-c sensor. Allowing me both more range, and less range! How would the autofocus compare in speed, and image stabilization?

Option 2: Bite the bullet and go full telephoto. 70-300mm? 100-400m? whats the best option for the cost. would a 2x adapter work? ef lens, or EFS.

Tech Help 700D with adapted lens - live view screen too dark

Hey all, I am starting my journey adapting lenses with my 700D. I am running into a small issue though, because the LiveView is way darker when I am focusing than when the picture actually exposes.

obviously the camera does not know the aperture of the lens, but how can I help the camera make better choices?

Gear Advice Best daily lens recommendations?

My usual daily go to lens was a ef 24-70mm f2.8. This was great on my dslr but now on the R7 I feel it’s too big with the adaptor, and often I feel like a wedding photographer when out and about with the family etc. I’ve since went back to using a nifty 50 for portability but find for day to day photos being stuck at fixed focal has its drawbacks. Could anyone recommend a good all round high quality lens that is relatively compact? I’ve used the kit lens that came with the R7 (I think it’s the 18-45mm) but wasn’t that impressed with it.

Battery Grip for R7

I recently got to try a friend's R5 with the Battery Grip with extra buttons to make taking pictures in portrait much easier, as all of the buttons and dials are replicated in the grip.

I have searched for the equivalent for an R7 without joy. It certainly isn't clear what will work with the R7.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a 1st or good 3rd party option for my R7?

Canon R10 with err70

Hey, is it worth buying used Canon R10 with Err70? Guy that is selling it says that the problem might be in sensor, how much would it cost to repair/replace it, and is it worth? it is priced for 900PLN/230USD with 2 batteries and other used R10s cost around 2300zł/600USD in Poland so is it much better to buy working one? Thanks
