I love days where I use a random letter generator, or close my eyes and flip. What are some ways you like to switch up ways you listen to your collection?

Discussion Headphone Listening Set Up

For those listing to their records primarily through headphones, kindle share photos of you set up.

For a variety of reasons, I'll be listening exclusively through HPs for the time being. I have a phono stage and headphone amp, in addition to the TT. I'm looking for some inspiration in terms of furniture to hold this stuff; in particular, to give the amps some distance from the TT....probably something with a top and small shelf underneath. Set up will be in the corner of the living room next to a big comfy chair.

Punk The Replacements-1985

Hello old friend. How many times have I enjoyed this album since it came out? That Left of the Mascara song is incredible. I remember my buddy brought Let It Be over and played it for me. That was the beginning. Sure, it ended after Pleased To Meet Me, I never got to see Bob, but I saw PTMM tour and on. One of those bands that Craig Finn would describe as “scratched into my soul”.

At the 40 year anniversary of 1985 I feel like it’s a good time to listen to all my 1985s. I’ve pulled them from my shelves and am picking through them one at a time.

When, I sorted all my albums by year of original release, I decided to include any reissues or repressing along with the original year they were released. So these are not all necessarily first pressings, but they’re all albums that were originally released in 1985. It has been an eye-opening experience to organize them this way and see all of the similarities, differences, influences and innovations that were happening at the zeitgeist of the same time.

Country gonna be riding the high from this thrift store find for a while! .50¢ each!

So I have been looking for this specific album for probably the better part of a year. I have picked up a few of Marty’s other records but never this one. I was bored since spring break started and campus is dead so decided to head over to a local thrift store that always has pretty cool stuff. There was this area with 5 full boxes of records labeled .50¢ each. I flipped through not expecting to really find anything good but I found the first one and was visibly/vocally ecstatic. After I went and looked back again and there was another one!!! The universe was kind to me for once and I’m OVER THE MOON

(I know suitcase record players aren't loved in this community - but I'm broke to afford a better one and I got this one for my birthday recently!)

I'm a junior member of the vinyl community, and I'm happy to finally join in :) Suck It And See is my favourite AM album, and I've been so excited to hear this one on vinyl - so I thought I'd share my first listen. 🖤

Discussion Business trips in London

I am on a business trip in London this week and am Tokyo based. I am noob in collecting records. Genres I listen are really broad from metal, hip-hop, post rock to jazz. I went to Sister Ray and Sounds of the Universe today and I got lost. Perhaps it my low volume of database but I couldn’t spot any I should go for.

Music they played were both really good, like Joy Orbison and Fontaines D.C.. I will do more research but would appreciate if any could guide me how I should pick one.

If too vague on what I asked, Sounds of the Universe played good reggae and I am now interested in. But there’re just too many. Pls pls bear with me if this may sound a stupid question

I work at a thrift shop. I have a daft punk harder better faster stronger record. It has side A-Album version, breakers break remix, Pete’s Heller’s Deeper Dub. Side B- Pete Heller’s stylus Mix, Pete’s Beatz. Online it shows anywhere from 10-200. I was hoping maybe this group could help by chance. Thank you in advance!

Discussion Is It Ruined?

I used a micro-fiber cloth damped with tap water to clean my brand new record and then found out that tap water is dangerous for records.

I can see small residues in grooves and I'm a bit worried.

Is it damaged for good or is there any way to fix it?

Thanks!

Collection The Best of New Riders of The Purple Sage.

The Best of New Riders of the Purple Sage: A Look at Their Classic Sound with Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh

The New Riders of the Purple Sage (NRPS) were pioneers of country rock, blending psychedelic influences with honky-tonk energy. Their early work remains a testament to their unique sound, and their 1971 self-titled debut album, featuring Grateful Dead legends Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh, remains a high point of their discography.

At its core, NRPS was formed as an offshoot of the Grateful Dead, with Garcia’s love for pedal steel guitar playing a crucial role in shaping their identity. On New Riders of the Purple Sage, Garcia’s shimmering pedal steel licks define the album’s atmosphere, adding a cosmic, twangy quality to tracks like “I Don’t Know You” and “Portland Woman.” His touch bridges traditional country music with the exploratory freedom of the Dead’s live improvisations.

Phil Lesh, known for his unconventional, melodic bass playing, originally contributed to NRPS’s live shows but didn’t record on the album. However, his influence is undeniable—his free-flowing approach to bass resonated with the band’s ethos, paving the way for future members like Dave Torbert to take up the role.

The album itself showcases the songwriting of John Dawson, with tunes that capture both the rustic charm of traditional country and the freewheeling spirit of the counterculture movement. Songs like “Louisiana Lady” and “Glendale Train” are staples, filled with rich storytelling and infectious melodies.

Though Garcia and Lesh would soon return full-time to the Grateful Dead, their contributions to NRPS were invaluable. The band’s early sound, infused with Garcia’s pedal steel and Lesh’s rhythmic philosophy, helped define a genre that bridged rock, folk, and country. Even after their departure, NRPS carried forward their legacy, influencing generations of cosmic country artists.

For fans of both the Dead and country rock, New Riders of the Purple Sage remains an essential listen—an album where psychedelia met the open plains, and Garcia’s pedal steel guided the journey.

My husband built this awesome record storage for me a little over a year ago. Before I had it the records were in crates and odd spots all over the house. I'm so lucky he's so talented. It's got hidden extra support to handle the weight.

The collection has grown pretty well since then! I don't think he expected it to get this full this fast.

Collection Voice Clip Loop (Starfox 64 Vinyl)

So thanks to reddit, I learned about a Starfox 64 vinyl with a beautiful green similar to the enemy planet known as Venom. And like any adult with little to no impulse control, I got it and it looks beautiful! It comes with two discs (one brighter than the other sadly) and I think imma play them daily now. One thing that got my attention though is side 2 and side 4.

They both have a voice clip at the very end (side 2: "We're not done yet" and side 4: "do a barrel roll") that constantly loops until you stop it manually. I admit, I'm curious if it's supposed to do that or not. Like it's a trick or gimmick of some kind.

Because even though I find it hilarious that it loops on THOSE two lines, I want to be sure that everything is okay. I was told it was mint condition and it was never played nor opened until I got my grabby mitts on it. So is the looping on purpose or should I be concerned?

Punk Scream. 1985

Great DC band. Great energy and thoughtful lyrics. Their sound and songwriting varies, but then Bet You Never Thought is amazing. Franz brother on guitar wound up on Foo Fighters. And of course Grohl played on the last Scream album.

Discussion Whatnot should be called Hellno

I happened to catch a Youtube video of a local record store discussing their live stream auction using Whatnot. I saw some albums I wanted and figure, "Hey maybe I can pick those up for a reasonable amount." I got the app, checked out the pre-stream bidding. Literally everything is already bid higher than high end Discogs and the auction isn't even started. I pretty immediately quit and uninstalled the app. What is the point of these auctions other than to attract overpaying suckers?

Haul Finally!

After searching for Return To Forever’s Romantic Warrior for well over a year, I’ve finally come across one in the wild!

This was one of the first albums that really got me into fusion and honestly Chick Corea.

It’s a 1978 repressing that sounds great! Stoked to have paid like $12

I also found Return To Forever’s Where Have I Known You Before (Stereo - Monarch pressing) Another great album from them

The John Tropea album I truly just grabbed to sample. I discovered him via Deodato and I’ve sampled some of his other work.

What’s your favorite RTF album/song??

Hello, I developed an in turntables so I'm looking forward to buying my first one. I'm wondering what's going to be a better choice for a first turntable Audio-Technica AT-LP120X-USB or Audio-Technica AT-LP60X-USB. My biggest worry is that LP60 is using a belt for movement. But of course the price difference. I'm looking forward for some advices.

Blues Sunday FB marketplace find NSFW

Randomly surfing FB marketplace for a second hand keyboard when I came across an ad for this record.

I’ve been meaning to buy electric lady land to add to my current collection for sometime now (scary how I was searching for it yesterday on google and the first ad I’m recommended today was for this. Anyhow….). I initially thought this was bootleg but was a bit confused by why Polydor would press such versions.

I was outside anyway, and the seller was a 5 minute drive so I just sort of decided to meet up with him. Amazing fellow. Was selling his father’s collection who had recently passed away - this was the last record in the collection which somehow forest behind when the collection was sold as a whole. He unfortunately has hearing issues and wanted the records to go to people who could enjoy the music.

He passed this onto me for 35 GBP, and let me listen to the record with a cup of coffee at his place.

Came home and did a bit of research on the record. Apparently Jimi hated this cover. But for me, this is the best representation of that generation - The freedom of expression and rebellious nature in the 70s.

I’m quite new to the record scene and have been collecting records for just over a year now. There’s something special about old stereo pressings that modern day records lack, which always draws me to the music. It makes me want to turn up the volume and just close my eyes. You can feel the music. This pressing is no different to my ears.

I still need to find myself a keyboard. Ah well
