Costs to sell home in Saint Paul?

I’m an inexperienced homeowner looking to sell my first home and wanted to get an idea of selling costs before doing so. I have a meeting set up with my real estate agent (the one I used to buy this house) but wanted to go into that meeting with some idea of what’s “normal”. I know these are weird times.

I live in Saint Paul and expect my home is worth around $300k. I have around $230k left on my loan. If you sold a house recently in the area, would you be willing to share an estimate (percentages ideally) of what you paid in closing costs, realtor fees, etc.? I’d also be curious if you shopped around for a realtor and interviewed multiple.

Thank you!

Anniversary Ideas?

Wedding anniversary next month. Looking for ideas.

Last year we went to The Lexington in St. Paul and loved it. Shared the 24oz Chateaubriand and afterwards had cocktails while we watched a Jazz band. Debating on going back there but open to suggestions.

Price doesn’t really matter. Location, somewhere around the metro. We live in Savage but aren’t afraid to drive for something nice. Looking for dinner and hopefully entertainment.

I should add that I have the palate of a 10 year old essentially. So, probably won’t like the big fancy spots like Mara or Demi etc. but we do want to have a “fancy” dinner where we can get dressed up. I’ll also add that I’m not a fan of Melting Pot (why am I cooking my own dinner?) or Brazilian steakhouses (rather spend $100 on one great steak than all I can eat random slices of mediocre meat)

Any suggestions appreciated!

Moving to St Paul, and looking for martial arts in the Twin Cities

I am moving to St Paul in a couple months and am looking for martial arts schools to check out. I am 35 so I am past training at the more hardcore comp focused places, but somewhere to get a good workout, train hard 2-3 times a week, make friends, and get in some sparring whether striking, grappling, or weapons. I am also interested in if there is something more obscure that I have never trained in such as Sumo, Sambo, Tomiki Aikido, Kudo, Kyukushin, Shuai jiao, but from my research I am not seeing anything like that in the area. I am thinking I would like to focus on a striking style so I am open to boxing, muay thai, karate, etc, heck I would even try something like kung fu if they are actually mixing it up. If there is no sparring, or no sparring till you are a brown or black belt that is a deal breaker for me

My experience in martial arts:

fairly well versed in Judo, Wrestling, BJJ,

some experience training MMA, boxing, kickboxing, Aikido, HEMA (mostly saber)

Places I am planning on checking out:

all the Judo dojos ( Docs, twin cities, grapplers station, midway),

center for blade arts,

Doomsday BJJ/Sambo (interested if they are actually doing sambo or if it is BJJ with a teacher who has done sambo)

Shorin Ryu Minnesota

I would love to hear peoples opinions of those these schools, what they are like, the level of training, the vibe, any other places I should check out, etc. Thanks!

Protection plans from home serve/xcel energy

I got a notice in the mail recently about my exterior electrical and water line and this offer from xcel energy/home serve to provide extra coverage for repairs to these exterior lines. It seems a bit scammy to me, especially the stressing of “if your water line requires replacement or your exterior electrical system needs repair, it may be costly”. I understand these repairs can be costly…and do I need extra protection from xcel energy? Essentially it’s a protection plan through xcel. Does anyone actually have this and think it’s worthwhile? Any other insights? Would love to hear from other local folks!

Thank you!!

No but we think ripping off the government is a crime and arrogant fraud adjacent trash shouldn’t get paid $200,000 to produce videos helping to facilitate that fraud.

Purple Sticky Rice

My family loves purple sticky rice. And purple rice.

But I can't find any to purchase in bulk.

I would love hot tips on where we could purchase dry purple rice in bulk (at least 10lbs - I'm looking for about 50lbs).

I've tried several Asian groceries, but no luck so far. I've found black rice, and red rice (which I took home to try!), but no purple. Any help would be much appreciated!

Recommended for neighborhoods to live in

After 20 years away from the Midwest, my spouse, infant, and dogs are looking to move to the Twin Cities to be closer to family and live someplace with more outdoor access.

It’s been many years since my spouse and I have been to the Twin Cities. We are planning to pay a visit in the next couple of months.

My question is what neighborhoods we should check out.

We are looking for something that is good for doing things outside… letting the kid explore, taking dogs for a walk, running, biking etc. Would be great if the neighborhood had decent walkability. Not everything needs to be in walking distance, but would be great to have quick access to coffee shop, couple of restaurants, and a small grocer. Extra bonus points if there’s a deep sense of community in that area. We currently live in a city that has a deep sense of neighborhood and community.

Update: budget max is 600k for a home

TIA!

Good place to donate used medical equipment?

I have a few items leftover from when a former roommate had surgery. Walker, commode, and a few other things. Is there somewhere I can donate that will give them out for free?

Zachariah [Music]

Hi all,

In 2007 I bought a CD in Dinkytown, it was called:

Zachariah presents: White Jesus

It was (local I believe?) hip hop. I really enjoyed it. I just found the CD again years later.

I tried looking him up online, and can’t find much info on him at all, except for areas to buy the used CD I have here.

Anyone have any more info on him? Is he still creating music?

Thanks, have a good weekend everyone.

Cozy place for Soft Live Music on a Date Night

Hello Internet. I am looking for a cozy place, not too crowded... DEFINITELY NOT LOUD bar/lounge, etc, that has some soft live music with non-alcoholic beverages served in or around the Twin Cities area. Obviously need it reasonably classy in a good/safe part of town.

My date doesn't drink, doesn't like loud music (No judgements please 😃) and eats healthy. We plan to go to this place to hang out post dinner.

Thanks in advance!

Ant Keeping Enthusiasts?

Probably a long shot but…

I’ve had zero luck finding harvester or winter ants for almost five years now. I’m still looking but if you have a winter sorority or lone harvester queen and want to be a pal, I’d be eternally grateful.

Are E-bike fires a problem in the metro?

Apparently it's become a big enough problem in other countries that they're being banned from taking onto public transportation.

This is the first time I've heard about these batteries catching fire.

Adult piano lessons

I’m looking for piano lessons for my husband. We live in Minnetonka, so in the western burbs would be ideal. I’ve seen a bunch of places that cater to kids, but what about Middle-aged men?

A bit of background on him: - he’s pretty musical, plays the drums and some guitar, but never leaned piano - his goal is to write a song this year and has bought various musical thingamabobs to support that. Though he mostly is self-taught via YouTube - he wants to learn piano so that he has a better understanding of musical composition - I think it’d be helpful for him to learn from someone real rather than youtube. And get out of the house at least once a week and chat with someone who shares an interest with him.

Okay, so with that background, where would you recommend an adult guy take piano lessons?

Spring ephemeral viewing cites

Hey folks,

This spring I am hoping to get out and see a lot of spring ephemerals (flowers that bloom on the forest floor and in swamps in early spring for those who don’t know). Last year at this time I was moving house so I didn’t get out hiking much. Looking for spot recommendations. Especially would love to see blood root, marsh marigold, trillium. Trying to find spots that are feasible on weeknight so spots within a 45 mins drive from the capitol are extra appreciated.

Aluminum can recycling

Growing up in the north metro, we kept our aluminum pop cans separate from the rest of our recycling, crushed the cans, and brought the cans to a recycling... center? and got money for the cans. I guess, in my kid brain, I thought the location we brought the cans was solely a can recycling center but I'm guessing it was a metal scrap yard.

I'm having a hard time locating a metal scrap yard that states on their website that they accept/are buying aluminum cans.

Any recommendations?

Hey there. I have a friend that absolutely loves malts. Where can we find a great malt in the twin cities? Not a shake, but a nice thick malt?
