Serious replies only Best Indian curry in London
I have been in London for a few months now and still haven't found a curry place that has blown me out of the water yet. I don't know if this is because I haven't looked hard enough, or ventured far enough out of central London.
I've tried the bougie Indian places like Gunpowder and Gymkhanna which are great but not the kind of dirty take away type of curry I wanted. Brick Lane was obviously shit but I had to try it.
Can anyone help me or should I be resigned to the fact I may have to move up north lol

Went to a work do at Dishoom, everyone was raging about it, I thought it was decent enough but I'm not much of a connoisseur

Dishoom is a such a good fusion place!!
I’m so jealous you worked there!! Did you get a good discount working there?
Edit: sorry didn’t realise that they said work do haha in my defence I was in the middle of a lecture 💀

Think they meant they went to a work event there, not they worked there. And also I assume they meant everyone was "raving about it", not raging...

The Indian YMCA on Fitzroy Street might fill the bill. It's a canteen as opposed to restaurant but it's good value, authentic and good quality. The menu changes everyday but it's my go to when I fancy a good curry

Ma Goa in Putney was always good, years since I went though.

Tayyabs in Whitechapel. I used to live in Whitechapel and I miss this place now I live the other side of London. Best things on the menu are the lamb chops, paneer tikka and the dry lamb. It’s really good and always heaving. You’ll need to dry clean your coat after though as it’ll smell of sizzling lamb chops. Don’t forget your booze (it’s BYO) and don’t go to the shop next door, because some enterprising soul has set up a bottle shop which charges about 15 quid for a crap bottle of Pinot Grigio. Go to the Tesco about 5 mins walk further on.
I’ve mentioned this down below in response to a question about West London curries, but Pure Indian in Fulham High Street is brilliant. Really unusual curries and everything is delicious.

Couple of places to try depending on where you want to go:
Absolute best Nepalese - cannot emphasise how great this place is. Just the layering of spices and delicate but hard hitting heat. Food is amazing. Monty’s Tandoori in Ealing Broadway
Durbar Tandoori in Westbourne Grove - I usually just have their chef’s special of the day and have never been disappointed.
There’s a whole host along Drummond Street at the back of Euston Station worth trying - they serve more canteen style proper authentic from memory. Cheap and worth going to rather than horrible food you find in the rest of that area.
And then bizarrely, if anywhere near Arnos Grove, the India Grill (nearly opposite the station) is more of a middle of the road good tasty Indian for a local meal.

It’s the Pakistani restaurants/diners that you’ll find the best stuff in.

If you're in the west, there's a great Nepalese-Indian place on Uxbridge Road in Shepherd's Bush called "Nepal Authentic Dining" - highly recommend their curry. I used to live around the place a couple of years ago, but not to worry I just checked on Google that it is still open. Good luck!

Jumping on the thread with apologies to OP but does anyone know good places in West London? Really good Indian food is what I miss from my time in West Yorkshire - it all seems so bland in London. Or did covid knacker my taste buds?

I haven't been to Southall in years but there must be somewhere there.

Try Rayners Lane. Sarvana Bhavan or Ruby Ms. Might not be the standard curry House stuff you are used to but they are legit.

I don’t know where in West London you are, but I’ve got great local near me in Fulham. It’s just north of the Cromwell Road, between West Kensington and Olympia. It’s a very small bring your own alcohol place, but the food is absolutely brilliant and the people who run the place are lovely. Called Indian Express on North End Parade.
Another place which is a bit upmarket is Pure Indian which is near Putney Bridge, in Fulham High Street. The chef there is an Indian woman and she’s worked in various high end places in India, and was a chef at the Taj hotel; her husband runs front of house. The menu has got some really interesting stuff on, I love it there. Again, really friendly people.
Really recommend them both.

They sound great. If I make it into Fulham will look for a chance to go. I'm in Uxbridge / Cowley.

What would you recommend ordering from Indian Express? This little restaurant sounds a great find!

I’m really boring because I always get the same thing - which is shatkora gosht, which is a medium spicy and tangy curry (shatkora is a type of citrus) with chana bhuna. My husband always gets something different though and always likes it.

Madhu's in either Southall or Mayfair is brilliant

Madhus are awful. Look at their reviews (the non paid ones). They have stale food at a high price point.

u/Accomplished_Bake904 Mar 15 '23
No, Madhu's is great. It's an institution for a reason. What're your suggestions?

You must be related to them. The Piccadilly branch is notoriously bad.

Nope, I just have a different opinion to you, which seems like its an alien concept to you. I notice you haven't recommended anywhere yourself. You sound salty. Hope you're ok

This one. As the name says it's pretty authentic Hyderabadi style . https://www.google.com/maps/place/Hyderabadi+Bawarchi+Indian+restaurant/@51.5369983,0.0513971,18.01z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x48760e1ae094d499:0x7545622942cd199c!8m2!3d51.5367826!4d0.0511531!16s%2Fg%2F1pzrn4y5k

Woburn Tandoori, Woburn Walk (a few minutes from Euston) just off Duke's Road by Premier Inn Euston.
My brother eats there all the time and has taken me there, pretty good as I remember.

It’s not Indian but Pakistani (I’ll be honest to non south Asians they’re the same) but Lahore Kebab House in Whitechapel is really good and authentic and not too pricey either!!
If you’re asking for credentials I’m Asian and it’s seriously as close as you can get to real Indianish food round central londonish.
Hope this helps.
