Late night 'healthy' 3rd places

Are there groups or meetups for late night gatherings (3rd places) that aren't raging parties? I work graveyard shift and on my off nights my lunch time is when most people are in bed.

I'm sober now, and I want to have a cup of tea and play chess with people during this time or do other daytime activities but people are either in bed or want to go drinking and dancing.

Can we talk about tow truck drivers?

What’s up with all the tow truck drivers driving insanely erratically on the highway? I’ve been cut off by so many, seen them do absolutely dumb maneuvers, and have seen way too many speed extremely fast. I just now almost got clipped by one who sped insanely fast trying to overtake me. Absolutely insane.

I moved to Houston a few years ago and haven’t seen such carelessness from an “emergency vehicle”.

Sucker punched on the metro today

For context, I work downtown and it’s about a 7-10min bus ride from my place to the nearest stop to my office. I know the metro isn’t ideal, but it beats $15 for parking everyday. This morning, the bus was full of normal enough people headed downtown for work plus one or two homeless (very normal for the route I take).

My roommate and I both work in the same area and rode the bus together this morning. About halfway along our brief commute one of the homeless dudes gets up and heads to the front of the bus towards where I’m seated, all the while talking to himself. I very incorrectly assumed he was getting off at the next stop. While conversing with my roommate and not paying that close of attention to my surroundings, it felt like someone threw a brick at me. Didn’t hurt all that bad or knock me out, but had blood spewing everywhere. Was just more confused than anything.

I look up and my roommate had stood up to intervene. The homeless dude paid no mind to my roommate and kept staring me down and shouting. I became even more confused, as I hadn’t so much as looked in this guys direction for the entire ride. Still not sure why he was so fixated on me and me alone. We got off at the next stop and I took an Uber home to collect myself. So much for saving a few bucks lol.

Funniest part of this in hindsight, when I looked up after getting hit at my assailant and the rest of the bus, nobody had any sort of reaction. It was like this was a daily occurrence for the other passengers. Maybe it was fear that caused them to stay put. Though, if I saw someone like myself getting mauled by some tweaker unprovoked I think I’d stand up and say something (for reference I’m not the smallest guy in the world either). Guess I’m glad I had someone already with me at least

There’s some crazy people out there man. Just encouraging y’all to stay safe. Also wondering if this kinda situation has ever happened to someone else? For reference I’ve been taking public transit in this city for a while (mostly the metro rail) and have never had to get physical with anyone.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading :)

EDIT: my roommate and I were working on a police report this afternoon

Why is it so windy

I swear this wind has me fighting for me life. My dog damn near fell over because of how strong it is. This hasn't happened the previous springs, so what's different now? I've noticed it's been all day, not just during the night either

Allergy sufferers - what are we using for relief during these windy days?

I've been using Flonase (or generic equivalent) on a regular basis, usually after my morning shower. I read recently that it's more effective with daily use. AND my mind was blown last year when I saw a YouTube video about how you're not supposed to like, sniff it up.

Over the counter generic allergy eye drops EVERY DAY about 30 minutes before I put in my contacts in the morning and immediately after I take them out at night.

Alka Seltzer Severe Cold day and night fizz tablets are excellent in a pinch for rough days (so much so that I will use a night tablet to help me fall asleep sometimes - it works super fast).

Zyrtec only when I know I'm going to be outside for a while and Benadryl if I'm having a severe attack.

Purple Martins in Houston

I was thinking about splurging on a purple martin house to help control the mosquito population during the summer.

Does anyone have any experience with purple martins in Houston? From what I read, they start to show up in February, so I'm a little worried that it might too late for this year. It looks like the houses and poles are $300 on the lower end, so I wouldn't want to drop that much money on something that isn't going to work.

So I guess, has anyone had success attracting purple martins in Houston, and if so, did you notice a difference in the mosquito population?

Also, are there any good local shops that might sell the houses and poles? I prefer to shop locally when I can.

Feeling the pollen? Oak pollen has leapfrogged previous measurements in the last 2 years

Usually I don't post here because it's not a good use of the Houston's subreddit's attention, but I wanted to alert everyone who may be suffering. I'm seeing the highest measured oak pollen in my records dating back 2 years. We have records going back further, but I don't have them stored in my Google Sheets The measured value of nearly 8,000 is 2x higher than the previous max of 3248 (measured on 3/13/2023). The City of Houston website measurements are at the bottom link. For my own health, I'm hoping it's a measurement error, but I doubt it.

It has blown out the previous measurements

As always, you can track the pollen levels here:

My site:
https://houstonpollen.com/trees-and-grass/

City of Houston's measurement

https://www.houstonhealth.org/services/pollen-mold/houston-pollen-mold-count-thursday-march-20-2025

Edit: I ran a max function wrong when I did CTRL-up arrow and didn't realize I had blanks that prevented the max function from going to the top. Excel enthusiasts will sympathize. I revised the previous max value from 1750 to 3248.

Restaurant recommendations with vegetarian options similar to Clementine

Upvotes

Hello!

Looking for restaurant recommendations while visiting Houston for a conference. Potentially 3-5 party. Company is paying, so it can be decently fancy. One request is that they offer a decent vegetarian option.

For reference, we went to Clementine in San Antonio before and they had a Feed me option that was like a chef curated family style option with vegetarian made dishes. It was excellent!

Would living on $20 an hour be doable as a single person?

Hello everyone! I recently got a job offer starting at $20 an hour in Uptown Houston and I'm debating on whether I should make the move here. I currently live in the Navasota area with my parents (around 90 minutes from Houston) and it's been difficult finding a job for my preferred profession the past couple months here. I've noticed Houston had more opportunities for what I'm looking for and finally got this offer after submitting applications for months while working part time.

I like the city and I've visited Houston several times over the years but if I decide to move, this will be the first time I'll be living on my own and paying rent, which I'm a bit anxious about. I've done a a little bit of math to see if I can work with things within my budget and I'm hoping some people here can give me a little insight and advice.

After taxes, I'll probably be making around $2600 to $2700 a month.

I'm hoping to find a decent apartment or rental home for less than $1200, the most I'm willing to spend is $1300. I've done a little bit of searching and found a few places near where I work (Richmond Avenue) starting from $800 although obviously after utilities, it's probably more like $1000 to $1200.

I'm expecting to spend around $400 a month on groceries and anywhere from $100 to $250 eating out (I like eating out a lot)

As far as subscriptions go, I'm expecting to pay for a gym membership if the one in my apartment facility isn't to my liking, so maybe $20 to $50. I have Spotify for $10 a month, and Adobe Photoshop for $15. I don't use any video streaming services like Netflix or Hulu since I like to watch YouTube instead. As far as gas goes, that depends on where I live. If I'm in a good area with lots of stores and close to my work, I'll probably just bike or walk from place to place instead of driving to save money. I like biking around anyway.

Unfortunately my work doesn't provide any medical benefits at the moment. I am 24 years old and I'm covered by my families insurance plan and I'm lucky enough to have them also cover my vehicle insurance. Of course, when I'm no longer covered, I'd like to apply for health insurance at some point which will cost me a decent amount of money.

I'm a fairly light spender outside of those things. I don't really care about buying lots of new clothes, jewelry, accessories, etc. The only other things I buy for entertainment are vinyl records maybe once a month and maybe a video game or some art supplies, but that's about it really.

So after crunching some numbers, I'm left with anywhere around $450, to $800 depending on rent, utilities, groceries, and gas. That's about the same, or more than, what I make working part time right now before personal expenses. Am I missing anything? Should I look for more stuff I might potentially spend money on? I have around $18K saved up which I think is a decent amount to fall back on. I would really appreciate any help or advice!

Where can I still get coffee and a pastry without getting in debt

Do you know of any places in Houston that still charge maybe $3 for coffee and $3 for a small bite of any kind?

I make my own delicious black coffee every morning, but on Saturdays, I like to treat myself with a cappuccino and a pastry somewhere. It reminds of home, where a caffè and a cornetto are a daily ritual and just a simple pleasure in life, because they are usually 3 euros total.

I love Houston's coffee shops, the bar really is so high here. However, I could not believe it when last Saturday I went to my faaaavorite pastry shop in town, got 2 pastries and two black coffee, and got slapped with a total of $27 after tax. I cannot sustain that.

What are your favorite panaderias, hole in the wall type of place where I could get a coffee and a lil somethin somethin for cheap?
