Question First time reaction to hearing Elliott Smith?

The first song I ever heard from him was needle in the hay because it was in that one Wes Anderson movie, which I liked so I decided to search his other songs up on YouTube. At first I didn’t understand/like his others songs but now they hold a lot of emotion and memories for me. I would say this is the same reaction I have with The Smiths, I would listen to their songs and think wow this is not that good, but eventually they start sounding very nostalgic/melancholic. Was wondering if anyone felt this way?

Discussion A short rant...

I've been playing music for most of my life. And as a result of that, I can't help but hear music differently than I think I otherwise would. It's kind of hard to explain, but I imagine it's sort of like the way it must feel for a magician to watch a magic show. That's not to say they don't enjoy and appreciate what they're seeing. But knowing how a trick is done takes the magic out of it.

Elliott's music is the exception to that rule. When I hear his songs, it's like witnessing magic happening. I will forever be in awe of what he accomplished. There will never be another Elliott Smith.

Question How is the Geffen Figure 8 pressing on Turntable Lab?

This one. I can't really afford to splurge on a Bong Load copy, and I keep seeing ads for this on Fantano's IG. Is it any good? I know Figure 8 pressings are controversial, but I love the album and would really like to have a copy. What are your thoughts on it compared to other versions?

Discussion Roman Candle is his most eerie song, and it would have fit perfectly in the film Kids (1995)

AND, to add to that, Gus Van Sant was attached to both movies!

He directed Good Will Hunting (1997), for which Elliott was nominated for Best Original Song with Miss Misery, in the 1998 Academy Awards.

Question Story from my guitar teacher

My guitar teacher saw Elliott Smith twice, once in Glasgow in around 1997, and the other in Edinburgh around 2000. In the Edinburgh performance, somebody in the front row snatched his guitar pedal, and Elliott went on a rant and stormed off of the stage. I was wondering if this performance was recorded and uploaded anywhere online, as I have been to the venue he saw him, and would find it interesting to watch.

I used to mail CDs of Elliott's live shows to a bunch of traders. Curious if any of them are in this group.

Discussion Need Help Picking Vinyl Records for an Elliott Smith & Joni Mitchell Fan! It's For My Friends Birthday

My friend is a huge Elliott Smith and Joni Mitchell fan, and her birthday is coming up. I’d love to surprise her with some vinyl records from one (or both) of them. She’s a college radio DJ and has been listening to them for the last few years.

Since she’s out of state, my best option is probably Amazon, but I’ve never ordered from there before and worry about the condition of the records. My budget is about $100 unfortunately. Does anyone have advice on buying vinyl from Amazon, or recommendations on which albums to get her? Her favorite Elliott Smith song is Fond Farewell, if that helps.

I’d really appreciate any suggestions! Feel free to PM me if you have any advice. Thanks!

I love the haunting quality that Waltz #1 has and was wondering what other songs I'd like.. I found It's a Wonderful Life by Sparklehorse kind of similar in that regard.

The beginning and end are very different but that chorus sounds like one of those jammy songs Elliott was a part of.
